Bonus Round 1: Memory

Bonus Round 1: Memory

Let's start our summer by looking at the past—things that happened in canon, or maybe in an AU, or maybe just as wishful thinking...

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on June 9 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post! You prompt should consist of one scenario beginning with the phrase "Remember when", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from our list of nominated fandoms.
    • Your prompts can take the form of recalling canon facts/events ("Remember when Nozomi and Eli got parfaits after school?"), non-canon events ("Remember when Megumi and Jin met at the Tadokoro Family Reunion?"), or somewhere in-between ("Remember when Bokuto and Kenma first met?"). Headcanons and AUs are welcome!
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Rei & Nagisa). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Rei/Nagisa). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Post fills by leaving a responding comment to a prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

Suki, suki, daisuki...

With Great Power

"You'll get it soon, Kaidoh, I'm sure." Inui shifted the phone to his other hand and scrawled a note about Kaidoh in his notebook.

"It's okay, senpai," Kaidoh said.

"I didn't get my own power until I was older than you are." Inui drew a heart after Kaidoh's name. "I'm a late bloomer, I guess." Another heart, then a little happy cat face. "But now that I can read my opponents' minds, I can get into position to return any shot. I call it the Inner Eye of Infinite Calculation. We can think up some names for your power when we're out running."

"I'm sorry, senpai," Kaidoh said. "I can't make it today."

+

Inui sat down on the bench and stretched his legs. Five minutes and Kaidoh would be there for their usual Wednesday post-practice date of push-ups, ice creams, and kissing. Push-ups with their feet on the bench for extra effort. Ice creams from the cart run by the old woman who always looked at Kaidoh in a way Inui didn't like. And kissing behind a tree.

Push-ups and ice creams Inui could do on his own but for the kissing he needed Kaidoh. He pulled out his phone to check the time again and it rang in his hand.

"Kaidoh? I'm at the bench." Inui looked across the park. There were a couple of girls sitting beside their usual kissing tree, but it would take at least twenty minutes to get through the push-ups and then another fifteen for the ice creams, so they might be gone in time. "I think I should check your condition more thoroughly today. Momoshiro's got his power now and I really thought you would be first."

"That idiot." Kaidoh hissed a little down the phone. Or Inui thought he did; sometimes when the reception wasn't very good, Inui mistook static on the line for hissing. "Senpai, I--"

"Don't worry," Inui said. "I'm sure your power will be more elegant than smashing big holes in the court for your opponent to fall into."

"Of course. But senpai--" There was a wailing sound in the background of the call.

"Is that a siren, Kaidoh? Are you okay?"

"Shit -- I mean, I'm fine. There's a ... cat stuck in a tree. I have to miss the park, sorry."

The line went dead. Inui looked at it for a minute, then put it away. He drew a sad cat face in the margin of his notebook. Then he started his push-ups.

But he didn't have any ice cream, even though there was pistachio today.

+

"I'm calling it the Super Great Extra Large Beautiful Dunk Smash!" Momoshiro swung his racquet and nearly hit Arai in the face. "Want me to show you?"

"We only have three courts," Oishi said. "And if you put holes in them, we'll have to use our budget money to fix them and then we can't have a party after we win Nationals."

"Let's go to the soccer field, Momo," Kikumaru said. "That's like a grass court. You can play Kaidoh and I'll watch."

"That's a good idea," Inui said. He looked around for Kaidoh. Maybe playing Momoshiro would help Kaidoh's powers manifest. And then maybe after practice, they could have a laps, juice boxes, and kissing-behind-the-clubhouse date, since they'd missed the park yesterday.

"Kaidoh's gone," Oishi said. "He got a text message and ran off."

The notebook slid from Inui's fingers and fell to the ground. Was Kaidoh avoiding him? Was he seeing someone else?

"Inui." Oishi picked up the notebook. "Why do you have so many drawings of cats?"

+

Inui set his phone on the table and stared at it, waiting for it to chime. Kaidoh hadn't skipped out of practice today, but he'd left right after, before Inui had had a chance to talk to him. So that probably meant that he was going to stand Inui up for the third time, and on Friday night, too.

On Friday nights Inui's parents always went out to their ballroom dancing club, so Inui had to stay home to watch the apartment. And Kaidoh would come over for a date of homework, snacks, and Kissing Plus.

Inui looked forward to Kissing Plus all week. He could usually coax Kaidoh to stretch out with him on the couch and then get his hands here and there while they kissed. One week, he'd even managed to get Kaidoh's shirt off over his head, but then Kaidoh had been so pissed about the love bite Inui left just under his clavicle, he'd made Inui stick to push-ups only for a whole week.

But this week, Kaidoh was probably with someone else, like that guy from the baseball club that kept trying to talk Kaidoh into forming a battery with him, which was something Inui could totally do, he'd always been a decent pitcher, so why did Kaidoh want to go off with some other guy and make plans with him to go to the same high school and do Kissing Plus with him under the Aim for Koushien! poster in his bedroom?

Inui grabbed his laptop and hacked into the school student information database for the baseball player's home address. Time to stand up and be a man. Time to march right over there and send Inui's new micro mini spy drone copter right into that bedroom and get the proof for himself. And then maybe give that pitcher a surprise in his post-game ice cream.

The doorbell rang. "Hi, senpai." Kaidoh toed off his shoes.

"Kaidoh!" Inui grabbed Kaidoh in a bear hug, he was so glad he hadn't lost Kaidoh yet.

"Senpai?" Kaidoh said into Inui's shoulder. He did hug Inui back and Inui downgraded the baseball threat to monitor-only status.

"I got those seaweed chips you like." Inui set them out and opened his books. He just pretended to do his homework, though, and watched Kaidoh's hair fall over his eyes while he read his history chapter and Kaidoh's forehead wrinkle while he practised his kanji. Inui was starting to associate his school work with Kissing Plus to a degree that sometimes caused him problems in class, but right now he didn't care.

Kaidoh closed his math notebook. There was a bit of a flush along the tops of his cheeks and Inui's chest tightened so much he could hardly speak. "Couch?" he managed to say and when Kaidoh nodded and dropped his eyes, Inui stumbled over his own book bag in his eagerness to topple Kaidoh down beneath him and get as much here and there as he could.

Then the fire alarm went off.

"Shit!" Inui ran to the kitchen, but for once, it wasn't his fault.

"Senpai!" Kaidoh called. Inui rushed to the front room. Kaidoh had his hand on the door. "It's hot." A wisp of smoke curled up under the door.

"We can't go out that way." Inui tried to remember what to do. Wet towels over their faces? He crammed his phone into his pocket. "The balcony. There's a rope ladder for emergencies."

A tinkling sound, just barely audible under the screaming alarm, made Inui turn around. And stop. And stare, his mouth dropping open.

Kaidoh was sparkling. His hair had lengthened somehow, curling around his face. There was a glittery purple crown on his head. He was wearing shiny high-heeled boots and a short white dress. A tennis dress, but still a dress. And he was definitely sparkling.

Maybe hallucinations were a symptom of smoke inhalation.

"We have to get out of here, senpai," Kaidoh said and his voice, even though it was still sweetly gruff, had a new musical quality to it, like he might burst into song at any moment.

"Kaidoh." Inui managed to close his mouth, but he was still staring.

"Come on." Kaidoh grabbed Inui's arm and pulled him over to the balcony. When he slid the door open, more smoke drifted in.

"The ladder--" Inui pointed to the rope coiled against the railing. But in once graceful movement, Kaidoh swept Inui into his arms and launched up into the sky.

Flying. Kaidoh was flying and carrying Inui and Inui could see the flames now, licking out of the apartment next door, and Kaidoh's arms were tight around Inui and the night air was cold and Kaidoh was wearing a dress and fucking flying.

Before Inui could do more than gasp in some fresher air, Kaidoh set him down across the street. A fire truck screamed up and fire-fighters poured out.

"Kaidoh." Inui clutched Kaidoh's arm. The sparkles were making it hard to see, but it looked like the ladder on the truck was malfunctioning.

"Senpai." Kaidoh looked deeply into Inui's eyes and Inui looked deeply back into Kaidoh's eyes, after sneaking a glance at how Kaidoh's dress had ridden up around his thighs. Then Kaidoh flew off again, back towards the burning building.

Inui clenched his hands, digging his nails into his palms, and held his breath as Kaidoh disappeared back into the smoke, the trail of sparkles fading out of sight.

The fire-fighters trained a stream of water onto the building. A crowd gathered, shouting and pointing. Inui's lungs burned, but he wouldn't let himself breathe, not until---

Kaidoh burst through the flames, carrying the neighbour's corgi, Charlie, which he was definitely not allowed to have in his apartment and which often kept Inui from concentrating on studying with its barking. But Kaidoh looked so lovely and heroic and non-burnt that Inui would have given Charlie a whole bag of doggie treats right then.

Inui ran over and bear-hugged Kaidoh again, squashing Charlie and making him bark. After Inui let them go, Kaidoh handed Charlie off to the neighbour. Then they stood side by side, watching as the fire was knocked down.

"Kaidoh, I never knew you could fly." Inui thought about all the adjustments he would need to make to his data, assuming his notebooks weren't ruined with smoke and water damage.

"It's my power," Kaidoh said. "I got it last week."

"But why weren't you using it at practice? You wouldn't have got trapped in Momoshiro's hole like Kawamura did. Are you saving it for Nationals?"

"Senpai." Kaidoh turned to Inui, sparkles dancing around his head, his hair waving softly, even though there was hardly a breeze. "If you have special powers, don't you think you should use them to help people?"

"Oh." Inui frowned. That had honestly never occurred to him. He helped people, of course, like carrying packages for old people and not reporting his neighbour's illegal pet. But this-- "That's what you were doing all week? Saving people?"

A blush crept up Kaidoh's face and he nodded. "Maybe you and I could...together."

"Oh," Inui said again. Kaidoh was right, of course. And maybe Inui's power could be useful. He concentrated on opening up the Inner Eye of Infinite Calculation and scanning through the crowd. Most people were worrying about the fire. One woman was worrying about her promotion at work. His neighbour was worrying about the landlord. And--

"There!" Inui ran to a police officer and got her attention. "That fire-fighter there, the grinning one, he's an arsonist. He set the fire!"

The fire-fighter tried to run but was quickly caught. The fire was put out. The crowd broke up and people started leaving.

"They say we can't get back into our apartment until tomorrow." Inui pulled out his phone and texted his parents. "Have you thought about what your power name should be? What about TeniHime? Maybe you could add a racquet to the ensemble."

"You could stay at my place," Kaidoh said. "There's a bus in twenty minutes." He looked down at the ground and kicked a stone with his boot.

Inui looked at Kaidoh's shiny boots and bare thighs. At his clinging dress, still pure white even after all the fire and smoke. At his flowing hair and glittering crown. And then he looked into Kaidoh's mind.

Kaidoh was thinking about Kissing Plus Plus. Which Inui knew about from the encrypted files on his computer and which he had no idea Kaidoh was even aware of. Inui's chest got tight again. He put his hand on Kaidoh's shoulder.

"Why take the bus," he said, "when we could fly?"

Oikawa felt like crying. He seriously did.

He was getting kind of broke. He hadn't slept properly in weeks. He had a mountain high pile of work to do, an even taller pile of textbooks to read, and his room was a mess. It probably didn't help that there was about fifty flowers in his room. (Okay, only thirty bouquets and five potted plants but it FELT like fifty.)

Between buying a ridiculous amount of plant life, taking care of said plant life and trying to get anyone he remotely knows to buy flowers from 'Spiky and Fresh Flower Shop', there really wasn't much time to do anything else. He'd also been keeping himself awake late at night thinking of the very handsome yet very adorable shopkeeper of said flower shop and his wonderful, wonderful arms and heavenly voice. Just thinking about it made him sigh.

He probably has to put the blame on Refreshing-kun for taking him there in the first place to help choose flowers for his anniversary. Obviously as much of a lady-killer as he is (and man-eater), he definitely knows more than a thing or two about romance and the importance of flowers. Of course Suga-kun would have come to him for advice. It definitely has nothing to do with the fact that he owes Mr. Refreshing a total of 3000 yen from poker nights at the dorm. Nope, nothing at all.

He was definitely not grumbling to himself as he followed Suga-kun to the flower store about stupid refreshing crows and their stupidly amazing pokerfaces. And he absolutely did not almost drop his wallet and keys along with his jaw when he saw the godlike magnificence that was Iwaizumi Hajime (according to his nametag). And he absolutely positively most definitely did not slide up to the counter and said the first pick up line that came to his mind.

“Hey beautiful, do you come here often?”

Iwa-chan had only stared at him with a mix of pure unadulterated fury and confusion which still made him look adorable somehow.

“I work here, dumbass.”

And then Suga-kun whacked him in the back and demanded he pay up and reminded him he still owed Asahi 4000 yen as well.

From that day on, Oikawa had been coming to that flower shop by himself at least every three days to chat it up with Iwa-chan. He made up tons of excuses to buy a new plant or two every time and continuously exclaimed it was because Iwa-chan was the absolute best at his job and there was no one else he can trust for flower choice. It was just a bonus to see his favourite florist blush as prettily as his petunias.

He also convinced everyone he knew that this flower shop had the best florist and the best flowers and that every occassion can use a flower or two. He had dragged Watari there to get flowers for Watari’s little brother’s graduation, he had Kyoutani come in to buy the venus flytraps his boyfriend wanted, and he even managed to convince Asahi to spend 1000 yen worth of flowers to greet his tiny boyfriend back from his volleyball training camp. Oikawa still owed him another 2000 yen.

Hence, not only was he broke but now none of his friends will answer his calls because ‘yes, we know where that flower shop is already.’

He was sick of this. He was Oikawa Tooru, the best setter in all of Miyagi and the most loved of all the girls in Tokyo University! He shouldn’t be here moping about the beauty that is Iwa-chan’s biceps and tan skin, he should be out there dating the beauty that is Iwa-chan himself! This was it. He will go and march straight into that cute little flower shop and ask out the man of his dreams! With that in mind he stomped his way to his dorm room door and ripped it open only to see someone ready to knock on his door.

Oikawa watched in horror as there, at his door, was none other than Iwa-chan eyeing Oikawa and his hell of a room.

“Wow. You really are a dumbass.”

“W-w-what?”

Iwa-chan just clicked his tongue

“How much money did you spend on flowers from my shop? Seriously.” Even though his face screamed annoyance, a faint blush was rising on his cheeks. “I should have known I’d have to do all the work.” He sighed.

“Iwa-chan?” Oikawa could only stare in confusion.

“Dumbass-kawa, w-will you go out with me?” From behind his back, he brought out a single blue rose.

Said rose fell to the ground as Oikawa tackled him to the floor.

These were quite possibly the worst directions he had ever seen in his entire life. He stood at a crossroads staring down at the paper in his hands. Why couldn’t they have given him real directions like turn right here, walk this many blocks, or give street names? Why was everything about landmarks that he didn’t have an inkling about?

Hm… Right. Suga turned right and began walking down the street, but stopped. Looking down at the paper and then at his surroundings, he turned around. This doesn’t seem right. Maybe I should have gone left instead. He reached the crossroads again and this time went in the direction he thought he should have.

Definitely should have gone left. He said after he looked around, but as he glanced back down at the directions he’d been given, he stopped. He should have found the small store by now. With a sigh, he walked all the way back to the intersection. Crossing his arms, he glared in all four directions. “Should I go straight?” He took a step forward and stopped.

The paper in his hands was useless, but he kept looking at it. If only he’d been given clear and reasonable directions from the Nekoma captain. “Maybe I should just start over?” He turned in the direction he had originally come from.

“Need some help?” A voice asked behind him. Looking over his shoulder, Suga’s eyes fell on another high school student. He felt himself staring, but really… it was hard not to with the confidence the other was exuding. The fact that he was very attractive didn’t help Suga much, especially with his brown hair and his eyes hidden behind a pair of glasses. “You look a little lost.” The brunet said to him. Suga looked at his clothes and internally cringed. Well, at least he was pretty.

Glancing down at the piece of paper in his hands, he figured he might as well ask for help. “Yeah, actually,” Suga walked over to the stranger. “I’m trying to find my way to Nekoma.”

“Nekoma High?” The stranger asked, blinking in surprise.

Suga nodded. “I have these directions,” he handed the piece of paper over, “but it doesn’t make any sense to me.”

He noticed the other’s shoulders shaking as he tried to hold back laughter. “Man, the person that wrote this must really hate you,” he grinned, and Suga felt his breath catch in his throat. This guy really was very attractive. “I’m from here and I’m even having a hard time understanding this.”

Suga sighed in defeat. “So you can’t help me get there?”

“Well…” He trailed off. “You’re basically going in the completely wrong direction.” Suga groaned. It was no wonder the directions had become so difficult to figure out. “I would write down how to get there, but I don’t know the specifics.”

Reaching for the paper, Suga kindly asked for it back. “That’s okay. Thank you for at least telling me that much.” The stranger didn’t return the directions. “I’m sure I can figure out my way,” he tried to convince the other that he was fine even though he was sure he was just going to get lost again. “I can always call someone to help me.”

He felt a little unnerved when the person was watching him with serious eyes. “If the person couldn’t even write down the directions correctly, you really think they’re going to be able to explain them?”

Suga thought of Kuroo trying to explain to him how to return to Nekoma. “No, but-”

“I know the way back, so I’ll take you there.” The stranger grinned and Suga felt his heartbeat speed up at the thought of just walking somewhere with this person.

“No,” he tried to grab the paper forcefully, but the other was too quick and held it out of reach. “I can’t ask something like that from someone I don’t even know.” He said seriously, hoping his glare would dissuade the person.

The grin turned into a smirk. His glare obviously had the opposite effect. “Well, if that’s the only problem…” Suga looked at him confused. “Miyuki Kazuya,” he held out his hand for Suga to take. “I’m from Seido High School. You can call me Miyuki.”

Staring at the hand in front of him, Suga tried to decide if it was a good idea to follow Miyuki. He knew this person was probably his only chance at getting back to his teammates, but Miyuki seemed a bit… mischievous? Mysterious? Was that the word he was looking for? Could he really be choosy at this point though? He was completely lost.

Taking the hand, he gave it a small shake. “Sugawara Koushi from Karasuno High. Suga is fine.” He gave a small smile.

“Nice to meet you, Suga-san.” Miyuki dropped his hand and gave a small smile as he began to walk in the direction that Nekoma apparently was.

Suga followed his steps. “Likewise, Miyuki-san,” he said but noticed the slight flinch from Miyuki’s otherwise calm exterior.

“Just Miyuki is fine,” his voice was tense.

“Okay then Miyuki… kun?” Suga asked carefully.

A slight smirk found it’s way across the Miyuki’s face. “Better.” There was a short span of silence. “So where’s Karasuno from?” He asked curiously when they made a right, walking by a few houses on the way. “I don’t believe I’ve heard of it before.”

“Ah…” Suga sighed slightly. “That’s probably because we’re from Miyagi.” It didn’t help that they weren’t a big school or well known for anything, so it didn’t surprise him that Miyuki had never heard of it. He did, however, remember hearing about Seido at least a few times when he was younger.

“Miyagi?” Miyuki looked at him in slight surprise as they made a left. “What are you doing at Nekoma? That’s not a short drive.”

Suga smiled slightly. “They’re hosting a volleyball training camp, and they invited us.” Another right.

“Heh…” Miyuki rose a perfect eyebrow at him. “So you play volleyball?”

He nodded a bit in response. “Yup.” Silence fell over them as they walked, and Suga let his eyes wander around. They made a few more turns. Two rights? Or was there a left in there as well? How long had they been walking now?

Glancing back at Miyuki, Suga noticed he kept his eyes trained in front of him. Suga decided to use this time to look over his guide. Miyuki was taller, and definitely more muscular than he was. He was wearing a shortsleeved shirt which allowed Suga to really see how defined his body was. Even his calf muscles were extraordinary.

“You play sports?” Suga asked curiously. There was no way someone built like this didn’t partake in some sort of sport or activity. He even wondered if there was an ounce of fat on Miyuki’s body.

“Hm?” Miyuki blinked and looked over at him. “Oh, yeah. Baseball.”

Baseball… Suga frowned. He didn’t know much about the sport aside from the basics. “What position?” He asked curiously wondering if he would know. He only remembered a few of the names.

Miyuki grinned a little. “Catcher.” Suga smiled a little in return. He actually knew that position. “What about you, Suga-san?” Miyuki glanced at him with a raised eyebrow.

“Uh… Setter,” Suga felt a little embarrassed for some reason and looked away quickly.

Miyuki hummed a little in thought. “So… similar to a catcher then.” Suga looked back to Miyuki confused. “Both positions basically set up the plays for their team.” He nodded in understanding.

“Have you ever played volleyball?” Suga asked but frowned when Miyuki laughed. “What?”

Miyuki waved a hand, dismissing the idea. “I know of it, but playing... no way.” Suga smiled a little. “What about you? Have you ever played baseball?” This time Suga laughed at the question. “Hm… let me guess... Couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn?”

Suga laughed even harder. “Nope!” He grinned at Miyuki. “Well, I mean I wasn’t great at hitting, but I couldn’t catch… at all.” He emphasized his point, making the other laugh a little. It was interesting to hear, a bit comical actually. “I always came home with bruises because the ball never ended up in my glove as a kid. The day I came home with a black eye was the last day I played baseball.”

“Wow,” Miyuki snorted. “That is pretty bad.”

Suga chuckled. “Don’t remind me. At least I’m better at volleyball than I am baseball.”

“I would hope so seeing that you’re here is Tokyo,” Miyuki smiled at him. They made another right, and Miyuki stopped walking. “Here we are.”

Suga looked up and noticed that they’d already found their way to the school. “Wow, that was fast!” He exclaimed.

“Well…” Miyuki chuckled a bit probably because of how happy he was to be back. “It helps when you actually know where you’re going.”

Smiling, Suga turned back to his guide. “Thanks, Miyuki-kun.” He blinked when Miyuki held out the piece of paper that had Kuroo’s directions on it. He took it, surprised that the other was finally relinquishing his hold on it. “Now you give it back?” He asked, a mixture of teasing and confusion.

A smirk danced across Miyuki’s pretty face. “Just in case you need directions again.” Suga laughed a little and shook his head at how ridiculous he sounded. “Well, I better head back to Seido.”

Suga stared in shock. “I am so sorry!” He bowed to Miyuki. “I hope I didn’t cause you to miss anything important.”

“Oh, I was in no rush to get back there, don’t worry.” Suga straightened and sighed in relief. “It was nice talking with you, Suga-san.” Miyuki smiled at him and Suga returned it.

“Yeah,” he gave a small nod in response.

Miyuki gave a small wave as he turned to leave. “Good luck with the training camp.” He smiled as he walked away.

Suga smiled brightly. “Thanks, Miyuki-kun!” He called after the other and then turned to walk toward Nekoma’s gym.

He looked at the paper in his hands. These directions were absolutely worthless. How would they ever help him get anywhere? Walking past a trashcan, he went to throw away the piece of paper, but stopped when he noticed writing that didn’t belong to Kuroo. Flipping it opened, he laughed. Miyuki had written his number on the inside.

He pocketed the piece of paper. “Just in case I need directions again,” he nodded with a grin.

brief mention of knee injury, ankle injury. brief implications of underage sex.
653 words.

The first time that they hold hands, both of them are too young to really remember it. Their mothers bring them close, swathed in warm quilts and blankets, and they blindly reach out for someone and end up finding each other. Cautiously, slowly, perhaps even optimistically, they wrap their hands around each other’s and curl towards their newly found anchor, breaths synchronizing as they both fall back to sleep.

The first time that they hold hands when they can remember it, Iwaizumi’s rolling his eyes as Oikawa’s crying. Again. So it’s only natural to drag Oikawa back home to get patched up by his mother, this time by the hand. Neither of them thinks of it as holding hands; there’s no butterflies, no romantic petals falling to the ground as Iwaizumi stomps and Oikawa sniffles and stumbles. There’s only a sense of trust, of stability, and Oikawa’s sniffles die to mere hiccups by the time that his mom disinfects the scrape. He’s still clutching Iwaizumi’s hand, squeezing harshly when the cut stings from the antiseptic, and finally relaxing after his mom presses his lips against the bandage covering his knee.

(He makes Iwaizumi kiss it better too. Iwaizumi shrugs his shoulders and kisses his knee as well, as if it’s no big deal. Oikawa’s left pouting long after Iwaizumi leaves.)

The first time that they hold hands and it means something more, it starts out as something less. Oikawa’s back from the hospital, his ankle twisted and his lips a thin line, his doctor’s words echoing in his head. He’s trying too hard, he knows, but what else can someone like him do in the face of overwhelming talent? His mom takes his bag and he shrugs off his jacket at the front of his house, hanging it up and heading up to his room with a promise to come down for breakfast.

Iwaizumi’s in his room, a frown deeply etched into his face. It stays that way all throughout dinner, except when Iwaizumi thanks his mom for the meal, and continues long after Oikawa’s set out the spare futon and joined Iwaizumi down on the floor to sleep.

“Your face is going to stay that way if you keep going like this,” Oikawa says in a laughing manner, hobbling over to pull at Iwaizumi’s cheeks.

Irritably, Iwaizumi bats his hands away.

“I could say the same thing about your ankle,” he says with anger laced through his voice. Oikawa instantly sobers up.

They’re sleeping next to each other; the lights are turned off and all that filters through the room is natural lighting from outside. Oikawa opens his mouth to say something but closes it. Repeats this a few times. Feels all the words leave his mind. His voice disappears. He wants to apologize but knows that it’ll be empty.

Blindly, he reaches out for Iwaizumi’s futon, snaking his hand underneath the blanket. His fingers brush the fabric of Iwaizumi’s sleeve and they trail down, fingertips light against the skin of his forearm, touching the ridge of his wrist, brushing over his knuckles, and finally coming to rest against his fingertips.

It’s so slight yet so intimate, so unlike the touches that he and his previous string of significant others have done underneath the sheets. Carefully, Oikawa shifts over and presses more forcefully, his fingertips against Iwaizumi’s limp fingers, relishing in the small contact that provides him insurmountable comfort. The fingers are rough but warm, just like Iwaizumi himself, and Oikawa suspects that Iwaizumi’s palms are calloused with years of volleyball practice, years of spiking the tosses that Oikawa sends him.

Very slowly and without looking, Iwaizumi turns his hand around so Oikawa’s fingers rest against his palm. And, very slowly, Iwaizumi curls his hand against his fingers, keeping them there, rubbing his thumb feather light against Oikawa’s pinky.

“Goodnight, Iwa-chan,” Oikawa whispers.

“Goodnight, Oikawa,” Iwaizumi whispers back. He doesn’t let go.

reposting because I forgot the rating

News had quickly spread that soloist Kousaka Honoka was to marry her former bandmate, famous politician and activist Ayase Eli. All they’d told the media was that they were having their wedding in a remote location, and that Nico’s idol-spotting tabloid would have exclusive rights to access and photographs; mostly because they didn’t trust the rest of the media to blow it out of proportion. Besides, Nico would know to keep it quiet, or at least, as quiet as she could hope to manage. Eli had long since given up on “quiet” from her high school friends.

Not that she minded the excitement, or the buzz. She wouldn’t have married Honoka of all people if she did. They’d been a couple since Eli’s tearful confession to her junior on the Empire State Building during their trip, and their partnership had been full of hijinks and mayhem ever since. Of course, they’d had their fair share of fights and squabbles and tiny spats, which was to be expected from two girls who were once archenemies. The good times more than made up for it though: good-morning texts and stolen kisses in the back of dressing rooms, and coffee dates when Eli went to Tokyo University which led to late-night city adventures.

Eli had never thought she’d find herself in the middle of a half-drunk makeout session in a back alley at three a.m. with Honoka pressed against her, her girlfriend’s breath tasting like plum wine, her lips like honey and sugar. It was that night as they stumbled home with Honoka’s arm wrapped around her waist, when Eli realized that she’d want to marry her some day. She, being practical, had wanted to wait until she was thirty to pop the question. Honoka had other ideas, and had surprised Eli with bouquets of flowers at her office house after she’d signed with Pony Canyon. Eli couldn’t say no.

Honoka had a habit of knowing what Eli really wanted, delivering on those promises one smile at a time.

Wedding planning had mostly been Eli working on the practical things like location and entertainment, with Honoka working on their increasingly long invite list. (“Yes, Honoka, of course we’re inviting Chika and the other Aqours girls. No, you are not tracking down that mysterious woman you met once in New York so you can invite her as your muse and inspiration.”) They’d planned for a private ceremony on an island off the coast, and guests would get there by boat. Wealth and celebrity, both from their Muse days and their current careers, had served them well.

Eli peered at herself in the mirror as Nozomi fixed her hair, pinning her blonde locks into a high ponytail reminiscent of her high school days. In her white dress with gold trimmings, she almost looked like a princess out of a fairy tale. Growing up, nobody had told her that princesses didn’t always marry princes. Eli was more than happy with a dashing lady knight. She dabbed some lip gloss on her lips; they were ready to go. She took a deep breath, calming the butterflies in her stomach. Nozomi handed her a bouquet of blue flowers as they stepped out the door.

“From all of us,” she said, ready to follow Eli down the aisle.

They’d decided that Honoka would wait at the altar while Eli would walk down the aisle. It seemed symbolic, Eli couldn’t help but think as she stepped into the garden. Honoka had always been a woman of action, the one leading the way with big dreams. Meanwhile Eli calculated and planned, keeping one step behind Honoka as she brought those ideas into fruition. Honoka turned around to face Eli, eyes and mouth widending into big “O”s as she caught a glimpse of her soon-to-be wife. Eli, too, froze in her tracks.

Eli always thought Honoka was beautiful, but today, she looked absolutely stunning. She looked so good in her dress that matched Eli’s, with its draped ruffles and fluffy train, along with an orange bouquet that matched her Muse image color and bright hair. Eli felt a nudge on her side.

Nico, of course. “Jeez, I know she’s pretty, but you kind of have to get married here,” she muttered underneath her breath. She too was in a fluffy white dress that made her look positively angelic… Until she opened her mouth. “Just get married already and then you can stare at each other for the rest of your lives!”

Eli giggled. Nico was right. She proceeded to walk down the aisle, reaching the front and clasping Honoka’s hands in hers. The priestess behind them, Christina, began to speak, and Eli felt so warm inside that her heart was about to burst. It felt long, far too long until she got to part her lips to say the magic words.

“I do.”

There’s magic in the air at Otonakizaka Academy. She senses it around her in the flowers that bloom, in the water they drink; Honoka can feel the essence of a spell creeping around her each time she steps into a brick building. There’s magic all around them, mystery everywhere, a well of unknown possibilities that she hasn’t had the chance to tap into yet. They can’t just let the school shut down!

Honoka frowns at the thought, rubbing her temples. There has to be something she can do to save the school. Of course she’d already tried marching up to the Director and just telling her about the magic—the Director didn’t seem to believe her though, and Umi had pulled her back and told her that their childhood games weren’t going to work when it came to serious issues. Honoka had waved her hands in the air and explained that this was real sorcery; this wasn’t a game, but Umi didn’t seem to believe her. Even when Honoka amplified Kotori’s magic in front of her, using it to make sakura petals grow.

She sits up straight in her seat. Wait, that’s an idea!

That’s what I’ll do—I’ll find someone whose magic can make dreams come true!

Honoka leaps out of her chair as soon as class is out for the day. She bounces from classroom to classroom, peering around in search of someone who has the right kind of aura, the sort of thing she can amplify to her benefit. And then, when she passes by the music room, she sees her. The red-haired girl is singing and playing the piano, and Honoka can hear the magic in the notes of her song. It’s the kind of thing that she just senses, just knows. The red-haired girl has a way of charming people into giving her what she wants, even if she probably doesn’t know it yet.

Honoka claps her hands as soon as the girl’s song is over, practically pressing her face to the window before barging in.

“Help us compose more music! We need you to keep the school alive!”

The girl stares at Honoka like she just grew another head. Honoka beams brightly, placing a hand on the girl’s shoulder, channeling her energy into the girl as she continues to speak. Now all she has to do is to get the redhead to agree to join her idol group; there’s no way they won’t succeed if she has her on her side. Magic is easy enough, once you find the right sort of host. Getting Maki to desire this will be the hard part.

There’s magic in the air at Otonokizaka Academy. Together, she and her new friend will keep it alive.

he knows mei won’t be able to see it from where he’s sitting, but kazuya smiles anyway. maybe he does it precisely because mei won’t see. mei hums, a dubious sound that doesn’t actually convince kazuya he’s being doubted. mei must realise it, too, because he joins kazuya where he’s sitting on the steps, the very same ones they’d spoken at earlier this afternoon, when mei called kazuya over with carlos and shirakawa and the others, extending an offer to inashiro, to team up together.

“you’re avoiding the question,” mei says, exhaling. arms stretched out behind him, kazuya doesn’t think mei’s complaining, exactly, but he indulges him all the same.

“oh? i wasn’t aware i heard a question to avoid.”

“see,” mei whines, turning to pout at kazuya like he’s proven mei’s point exactly. perhaps he has.

distantly, kazuya wonders about the way things tend to unfold in the end, whether you avoid them or not. he wonders which option he’s committing to here, accepting mei’s invitation.

“i already said yes, mei,” kazuya says. then, teasing: “unless you want me to take it back…”

kazuya can’t see it, but he knows mei is rolling his eyes. “god, i forgot how annoying this side of you is.”

“why, thank you!”

“kazuya,” mei says. kazuya thinks he’s going to say something else and waits for it, but nothing follows. at least, nothing mei’s said out loud. so kazuya says something for him:

“mei. i’m not going to change my mind.”

he doesn’t follow up the statement with about anything, but it’s implied.

“i figured as much,” mei replies. “it’s just, i don’t know, i thought maybe you’d end up chasing after him anyway.”

mei doesn’t follow up his statement with a name, either, but kazuya gets the implication. so that’s what they’re talking about, then. and kazuya laughs, even though he doesn’t find anything particularly funny. mei doesn’t laugh with him, but he doesn’t interrupt kazuya, lets him work through it at his own pace. he’s like that. it’s one of the things kazuya appreciates most about him.

it’s also probably one of the reasons he’d said yes, in the end.

“well,” kazuya draws out the word, transitions from his laughter to his speech with deliberate carelessness. “i did consider it. chasing.”

“okay,” mei says, and kazuya believes him. he continues.

“i considered it, but. well. i don’t know, really. maybe i just hate to lose.”

mei snorts. “that’s a given.”

“i mean, you know what they say — it takes one to know one.” kazuya glances at mei, significantly. then he grins.

“so, what. you’d rather team up with me than lose to him? is that it?”

it’s — not exactly it, and the look on mei’s face right know tells kazuya he’s guessed as much, but it’s close enough. kazuya’s not surprised this is the conclusion mei’s ended up drawing. he pauses, considering just how honest he wants to be with what he says next, before deciding it’s best to answer honesty with honesty. anyway, it’s not like mei’s going to hold this against him.

“nah, it’s more like. if i had to lose, in an official match, then i’d rather…” kazuya lets the thought trail off, then says: “not that i’m planning to lose, though.”

mei doesn’t look at him when he drawls, “obviously. going in with resolve that weak’s unacceptable.” but because he’s mei, he doesn’t let it end there: “i’d never accept anything less than complete victory.”

come to think of it, kazuya’s always liked this part about mei, too.

“then, i guess we’ve got ourselves a team,” kazuya says softly.

mei turns to face him properly again. “like i said: i’d never accept anything less.”

kazuya hums, not quite agreeing, but not rejecting the claim, either. mei doesn’t chase him up on it, and for a while the two of them sit along the steps, unspeaking, but it’s comfortable. kazuya doesn’t mind it. wouldn’t mind doing this more often, with mei.

“i’ll be seeing you at the entrance ceremony, then. kazuya.” mei phrases it as a goodbye but he still hasn’t moved. kazuya turns, his turn now to look at mei.

“yeah. yeah, sure.” he’s still looking at mei, though, sure there’s something he’s missing… and then he finds it. tucked against mei’s side: on top of mei’s bag is a baseball glove, baseball tucked inside. kazuya doesn’t remember mei having either when they saw each other before. an unexpected curl of fondness stirs in kazuya’s chest. he’ll never admit it, but mei’s a lot more honest than people probably give him credit for.

with what he wants, and everything else.

so kazuya stands, considers dusting off any dirt from his jeans before deciding against it. it’d be too dark to see if there was, anyway. mei still hasn’t moved, so kazuya nudges his shoulder with his knee.

“hey. got another glove hiding in your bag?”

“why would i be hiding anything,” mei huffs, more out of instinct than anything else.

kazuya laughs. “well? do you.”

“maybe,” mei allows, glancing from kazuya to his bag then back. picking up his glove, mei stands up, shoulders his bag.

“it’s too dark here,” mei explains, then nods down the steps where the park levels out, lamps providing decent enough lighting even from where kazuya’s standing. “you can see better from down there.”

he’s already walking down the steps two at a time before he’s even finished saying it, taking kazuya’s unspoken offer at face value. and because mei’s also actually a brat, he doesn’t thank kazuya for it either, but that’s alright. kazuya wasn’t looking for gratitude when he made the offer, or even when he accepted mei’s. for any of it, really.

“after you, then,” miyuki calls after mei, already starting down the steps to follow.
