Bonus Round 1: Memory

Bonus Round 1: Memory

Let's start our summer by looking at the past—things that happened in canon, or maybe in an AU, or maybe just as wishful thinking...

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on June 9 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post! You prompt should consist of one scenario beginning with the phrase "Remember when", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from our list of nominated fandoms.
    • Your prompts can take the form of recalling canon facts/events ("Remember when Nozomi and Eli got parfaits after school?"), non-canon events ("Remember when Megumi and Jin met at the Tadokoro Family Reunion?"), or somewhere in-between ("Remember when Bokuto and Kenma first met?"). Headcanons and AUs are welcome!
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Rei & Nagisa). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Rei/Nagisa). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Post fills by leaving a responding comment to a prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

    For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
    Fills 4-10: 10 points each
    Fills 11-20: 5 points each
    Fills 21+: 2 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

    Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only.

Have a question? Check The FAQ first. If you still need help, feel free to contact the mods. Happy fanworking!

no tags, 574 words excuse me as I strike while the iron is hot to write the fucking cheesiest ushioi so far in my whole life

The first time Wakatoshi asks Oikawa to go out with him he doesn’t actually envision the boy would agree to it at once.

But he has a niggling suspicion that Oikawa thrives on tripping him up whenever he least expects it, like a kitten jumping onto its owner’s back when they aren’t looking, so he tries to take it all in stride.

(Deep down inside he’s simply thankful he wasn’t born with easy blushes.)

Oikawa shifts impatiently in front of him, so he tries to gather his thoughts again. “Thank you for your consent, Oikawa. It means a lot to me.”

The nose scrunch Oikawa pulls off at that is quite a feat, and his tone is longsuffering when he speaks. “Your way with words is drier than a cicada’s husk in summer, Ushiwaka-chan. As usual.”

Oikawa probably meant to be insulting, but Wakatoshi finds a strange kind of liking towards his analogy. It’s quite poetic, even, if one properly thinks about it.

(Oikawa’s wrinkled nose, however cute it may be, is not a contributing factor. Truly.)

“What? Cat got your tongue now? Or rather, in your case, did a cow chew it off?”

A hand waves wildly into his field of vision, and Wakatoshi snaps out of his staring contest with Oikawa’s nose. “Why a cow?”

The boy lets out an almighty snort at that, reaching out to lightly whack Wakatoshi’s arm. The brief touch leaves a lingering warmth on his skin and his heart stutters for just that one beat. “It’s one of the kanji in your name, you big oaf. Don’t you even remember the readings for your own name?”

“I do.”

Oikawa leans forward to squint up at Wakatoshi so they end up nearly nose-to-nose. Wakatoshi may have flipped through some of the shoujo manga that Tendou laments to him about but he never intended to relive a scene straight out of one. The way they’re facing each other now, along with how close his mouth is to Oikawa’s— it isn’t very likely but Wakatoshi will not be surprised if rose blossoms and rainbow streaks start randomly falling from the sky. Stranger things have happened, anyway.

(Like how alive Oikawa’s scorching jump serves makes him feel on the court.)

Wakatoshi clears his throat. “Is there something wrong?”

A wicked grin pulls at Oikawa’s lips. “Yes, everything’s wrong about your face, Ushiwaka-chan. Your eyebrows are caterpillars, your jaw’s as broad as Iwa-chan’s spike, and your resting bitch face is no better than a pug’s. What do you have to say about that, huh~?”

“Nothing. You’ve consented to dating me, and that’s what matters the most.”

The disgust on Oikawa’s face is as real as it gets and the worst thing about it is Wakatoshi’s enamoured by the grimace and the glare.

And if Lady Luck hadn’t already graced him with more than enough, Oikawa starts cracking into little snuffles of laughter, and Wakatoshi is as good as gone.

“Seriously, Ushiwaka-chan. You’re terrible. People usually use the word “consent” for far more serious stuff yet here you are throwing it about like you’re in court.” The boy that Wakatoshi likes shuffles closer to loop an arm around one of his own.

He doesn’t really have anything else to lose, does he?

“But I am in court. Courting you, that is.”

Oikawa promptly lets go of him.

”Why the fuck are you like this.”

(Wakatoshi finds Oikawa’s stink eye beautiful all the same.)

Warnings: none

Word count: 1006

It was far from the truth to say that Ushijima Wakatoshi was dense. He wasn't dense, or obtuse, or pig-headed. The young man was just.... focused! No matter what he did, Ushijima was always focused on the task at hand, whether that be eating lunch or winning a volleyball match. It didn't matter the task; ever action got the same brand of undivided attention.

That could very well be the reason why Ushijima's behaviors could be seen as dense at times. He is so focused that all other activities and situations around him seem to magically disappear from view.

....That being said, it wouldn't do Ushijima any harm in learning to focus a little more evenly on the situations around him.

"Ushijima-san," Shirabu began, lips pulled downward into a frown, eyes no where close to meeting Ushijima's-- rather, they were aimed across the net, towards a face that seemed just as irritated as his did. "May I talk with you for a moment?" There was no reason at all for Ushijima to not consider going over to his teammate, of course, so he did so without question.

"Is there an issue, Shirabu? Your tosses are as close as possible to perfect today and we are ahead by a set-- I cannot see where a problem could have arisen." Ah, even though it wasn't the original goal, Ushijima's indirect praise felt alarmingly good, only adding fuel to Shirabu's next course of action.

Taking a step closer, and finally moving his gaze from across the net in order to meet Ushijima's eyes, Shirabu hummed a moment in his throat before shaking his head. "There isn't any problem, persay, Ushijima-san," he started, speaking slowly. Shirabu could already tell he was confusing Ushijima; the taller boy tilted his head to the side and opened his mouth in order to voice his concern, but Shirabu cut him off. "But, I do have something to ask you about."

_______

"What a brat," Oikawa's grin was shaky, fists clenching and unclenching-- it was actually quite an amazing sight for all of Seijou to behold, seeing Oikawa so...... riled up.

It was very common knowledge to everyone and their dog that Oikawa and Ushijima's relationship towards each other was nothing short of a big, complicated pile of who-knows-what. Everyone was quite sure even Oikawa himself couldn't understand it-- god knows Ushijima has no clue at all. However, that didn't mean it wasn't interesting as hell to see it play out, especially at times like this, during practice matches.

Of course, Seijou and Shiratorizawa were still enemies. Nemesis. Fated rivials. Whatever term you'd like to use, but that doesn't mean that there aren't some things that even the harshest of rivials could bond over-- in this case, that "thing" is whatever competition Shirabu and Oikawa currently seem to be having.

"You're ridiculous," Iwaizumi is having none of this shit, though, and the young man rolls his eyes before crossing his arms over his chest. "He's obviously trying to get you irritated-- well, more irritated."

"And it's my fault that it worked?! I'm the one that's the victim here, Iwa-chan!" Amazingly, Oikawa doesn't take his eyes off his staring match with Shirabu. "I'm being victimized by Ushiwaka-chan and his misbehaving hamster!" It was alarmingly obvious that Oikawa said that loud enough for the entire gym to hear on purpose, because Kawanishi mysteriously had to turn away for a moment or two and Tendou straight-up burst into laughter.

("He called you a hamster, I told you, Kenjirou-- remember when I showed you that picture of the hamster and the banana, see--")

Iwaizumi, being the smart man he was, chose not to engage in further banter with Oikawa concerning this topic. He knew there was nothing for him to gain from it. Don't participate in your friend's unnecessary quarrels. Be like Iwaizumi.

Don't be like Hanamaki, who whole-heartedly intended to make the situation worse for absolutely no reason at all except for pure entertainment. "Oikawa, don't worry too much. It isn't like they can have sex right in front of you on the court." He paused, genuinely considering the prospect for a moment. "I mean, at least not right now, since it's noon. Maybe later tonight, if you're in to that."

The bait worked. "Why would I be into that! I'm not into that! I don't care what Ushiwaka-chan does! or what Rabu-chan does! Or what they do together!" As Oikawa proceeded to go on, Iwaizumi rolled his eyes, leveling a glare in Hanamaki's direction for a moment before returning to his position on the court. There was no hope with this. None at all. "Feh, this is all probably for show!" This time, Oikawa didn't meant to speak as loudly as he had, but it nonetheless once again heard by everyone in the gym.

Shirabu's eyebrows rose dangerously, and he spoke something quiet to Ushijima-- something that seemed to confuse him even more, but it was of no matter to Shirabu. He returned his gaze to Oikawa's as he reached up to lightly take Ushijima's collar in his fingers.

The room was completely silent as Shirabu tugged his captain downwards with the express purpose of kissing him, right there, in the middle of the court. Both teams were in complete silence, it seemed like the entire world had stopped for a couple moments.

This silence continued, for maybe another minute, until Shirabu finally released Ushijima. Tilting his head to the side once again as Shirabu licked his lips, Ushijima spoke much louder than he really had to. "As much as I enjoy that, I do not think the middle of the court is a proper place for such an activity."

...Iwaizumi had to hold Oikawa back in order to keep him from stomping over to the other side of the court.

("Come ON, IWA-CHAN! RABU-CHAN JUST GAVE HIMSELF AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE, RIGHT? IT'S ONLY FAIR THAT I GET TO MAKE IT EVEN, RIIIIIGHT~?")

profanity

838 words

The first knock at his door was so quiet, Arakita wasn't sure it was real. He looked up from his books to listen for someone yelling that he had a phone call, or he'd left his laundry in the campus laundromat, or maybe that someone was setting something awesome on fire on the quad and he had to come see, but no one said anything. Finding his question again, he went back to scratching answers down on his paper. Class was in an hour, and there was one thing just as true at college as it was in high school: yankee assholes like him had to have their shit together, because profs would never cut a jerk with an attitude any fuckin' slack.

Half a sentence into his answer, he heard the knock again, loud enough that he knew it was real. This time, a voice did follow it up, trembling and young, not one of the people Arakita would've expected to knock on his door. "Umm... hello? The residential assistant said you were in, although I suppose I could be wrong and I'm just talking to the air. Hahaha... And he said not to knock if there was a sock on the knob for some reason, but there isn't so... Anyway if this is a bad time, I can come back!"

Arakita threw open the door, ready to snarl at whoever was there about being a fucking nuisance while he was trying to get his homework done. The effect was kind of ruined by how he had to stop and look down a foot because the person knocking wasn't as tall as your average college student. That was when he saw big, round, shining glasses in front of big, round, also shining eyes. Eyes that didn't seem to stop shining, ever, even though the kid was clearly trembling in fear. He'd jumped back a foot from the door, and was guarding his face with a crumpled yellow flyer like a dork, which was fair because of course he was a dork. You could be a decent biker and still be a dork. Primary example: Toudou-san. But this terrified munchkin wasn't Toudou-san.

"Onoda-chan? What the fuck are you doing here? You know Kinjou-san is in the west hall, right?"

The kid shot to attention, with his hands at his sides. "Yes, sir! I mean, yes! That is, I know! But I'm here to talk to you, Arakita-san! I-if that's okay, I mean?"

This fucking kid. He always said exactly what he was thinking, and somehow Arakita just couldn't hate him. "Fine. You're here, so talk. I ain't got all day."

"Of course! So you see, our team fundraiser this year is putting on a play full of fairy tales--"

"Why should I give a shit about Sohoku's fundraisers? Haah?! I may have graduated, but I still went to Hakogaku!"

The munchkin bowed at the waist, holding out the yellow flyer with illustrations of that Imaizumi brat in a bunny costume racing some kid with a towel around his neck, dressed like a tortoise. And Onoda-chan was a pig, along with a kid with curly hair and one with straight hair down to his shoulders. There was an empty space nearby where even Arakita knew somebody ought to have been huffing and puffing to blow a house down, and/or making a meal out of the red-headed sprinter carring a basket of bread.

"Please, Arakita-san! You're the only person I can imagine playing the wolf! But I know you went to Hakogaku, so I stopped by there and Meisou first to let you know I was serious!"

The next thing the kid produced from his bag was a crisp envelope that said, "To Arakita," on the outside. The paper inside had two different styles of handwriting on top it said, "Sempai, shouldn't it be fine, abs? Sincerely, Izumida." The bottom note wasn't signed, but it didn't have to be. Fuku-chan knew he'd recognize how, "Be strong," looked in his handwriting.

"You seriously don't know how to go halfway, do you, Onoda-chan?"

"No, sir!" the kid chirped, looking bright as a goddamned neon light.

"That's not something you smile about, kid!"

~//~

His whole team -- current students and graduates -- was out in the audience, the little blue-haired wonderboy had brought popcorn, and Arakita was covered head to toe in shaggy gray fur. What the hell had his life become?

"Arakita-san!" yelled Onoda-chan. He was holding out a phone strap with a wolf on it, and little felt piggy ears were sticking up off the headband in his hair. "Please take this as a token of my appreciation. I can't thank you enough for agreeing to help us out!"

"You can shut up about it, is what you can do! Or I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll blow your house down for real. Ain't nobody gonna stop me!"

"Yes, sir, Arakita-san!"

He took the phone strap, though. Didn't want anybody thinking he was doing them any favors.

Nori was never one for homemade lunches. Maybe when he was younger, but living in the dorms was just too difficult. He’d much rather take a calming walk to buy something during the break because it at least let him get away from the classroom.

Saying goodbye to Shirasu, Nori took his leave from the room and began walking the halls like he did every day. “Nori!” Turning in the direction of his name, he saw Miyuki waving him down while avoiding groups of loiterers in the hall.

Eyeng the catcher, Nori wasn’t sure what to think. “Miyuki?” He asked confused as the other just smiled at him, not saying a word.

Miyuki continued to look at him. They stood there a bit awkwardly. Well… at least Nori felt awkward under the catcher’s gaze, and he really just wanted to go get some food. The sound of his stomach growling broke them out of the moment. Miyuki’s face frowned in confusion, but then he seemed to remember something. “Oh!” The catcher lifted a box that Nori hadn’t noticed the other was carrying. “This is for you.”

Taking the box, Nori opened it to find a homemade lunch, and he was impressed with how well it was made and also how balanced a meal it was. With a laugh, he closed it back it. “You made this?” He looked at Miyuki, amusement shining in his eyes. “For me?” The catcher nodded and grinned. Feeling the heat rising to his cheeks, Nori turned his eyes on the box. “Uh… thanks…” He mumbled, unsure of what else to say. “But, Miyuki, I don’t need this. I usually just buy lunch.”

Shrugging and stuffing his hands in his pockets, the catcher just continued to smile. “I know, I know. I heard that, but I figured you could probably use something more nutritious than whatever you’re buying.”

Flushing in embarrassment, the pitcher pouted. “It’s not that bad.”

“Nori,” he looked up at Miyuki. “Your favorite food is fried chicken. Please eat this instead of whatever else you’re buying.”

“Fine,” he grumbled, but he still felt embarrassed. Why did he have to eat a homemade meal? He wasn’t a kid, and he could take care of himself. “I’ll eat it,” he caved and watched as Miyuki’s grin widened. Nori wondered if there was ever a time outside of baseball that the other looked so happy. “Is this like a thing you’re doing for all the pitchers then?” He watched the other’s smile falter just a bit before it returned brighter than before, but the laugh the catcher let out was far from joyous.

“Yup!” Nori couldn’t help but think the smile looked forced now. “Can’t be too careful with you guys.” Miyuki avoided his eyes. “I just want to take care of you.”

He couldn’t explain why, but Nori felt like those last words were directed only at him and not the pitchers as a whole. He could feel the heat radiating in his cheeks and it felt as though his heart was going to burst out of his chest. How was he supposed to react to that? Tearing his eyes away from the catcher, he looked back down at the bento in his hands. “T-thanks…” he stuttered as he shifted from one foot to the other. “I should go back to my classroom, and… uh… eat then.” He offered Miyuki a small smile. “Really, Miyuki, thank you.”

The bright - honest - smile was back on the catcher’s lips. “Any time.” They began walking their separate ways but Nori stopped at the sound of his name. Miyuki’s gaze was a bit more serious as he said, “Let me know how it is, so I can change it for next time.”

“Next time?” Nori mumbled aloud, but Miyuki was gone before he had a proper chance to ask. Walking back to his classroom, Nori couldn’t take his eyes off the lunch in his hands. The whole exchange had been strange, but then again… maybe it had only been awkward on his side of the conversation. He was so lost in thought he didn’t notice Shirasu’s confused look as he sat down.

“What do you have there?” The outfielder asked curiously, looking down at the pitcher’s desk. Nori understood the confusion on the other’s face since this was not the usual food he brought back for lunch. “A… bento?” Nori nodded as he opened the lid again and picked up the chopsticks stuck in the side. “From who?”

Glancing up at his friend briefly, he looked back down at the food with a blush that was threatening to form. “Miyuki gave it to me…” He mumbled a little embarrassed. He still didn’t understand the reasoning behind that feeling.

“Interesting…” Shirasu looked as though he was trying to work out something. “Looks good.”

Nodding, the pitcher took a small bite to taste the flavor, and his eyes lit up in surprise. “It’s really good!” He exclaimed as he began to focus more on the food in front of him causing Shirasu to laugh a bit. Nori didn’t want to admit it, but this was definitely better than anything he’s ever bought for lunch. A part of him was even delighted that there was the opportunity for more of this in the future.

Days turned into weeks and Nori was still getting bentos from Miyuki every day. Unlike the first couple of days where he accepted the food a bit reluctantly, he now met Miyuki half way between their classrooms and happily took the food. No matter what Nori said, however, the catcher wouldn’t take anything back as gratitude. It made him feel a little odd. He didn’t understand why Miyuki was being so generous because he had soon found out that none of the other pitchers were being treated the same way like the catcher had said before.

Smiling to himself, Nori happily ate the bento in front of him. He was still confused, but he tried to let himself enjoy the food while he could. Unfortunately, Shirasu had other plans. “Nori?” He hummed in response. “Don’t you find this whole thing a little… weird?”

“Weird how?” Nori asked, mouth full as he kept stuffing his mouth with the fried chicken Miyuki was kind enough to add this time. When Shirasu didn’t respond, Nori glanced up to see the other frowning. “What is it?”

With a shake of his head, Shirasu sighed. “Well it’s just Miyuki’s been bringing you bentos everyday, and you find it normal?” Nori just shrugged. “You think maybe there’s another reason behind the whole thing?”

Swallowing the food, Nori frowned in thought as he tried to think of some other reason. “Not that I can think of.” He glanced down at his food. “Why? What are you thinking?”

Shirasu looked down at the food on his desk, and Nori followed his gaze. The bento contained all of his favorite foods which meant Miyuki was taking extra care into making them. The catcher was even starting to do extra things like making the onigiri look like baseballs. “Well,” Shirasu began as he tried to figure how he wanted to say it. “I think that maybe… Miyuki might like you.”

Nori choked on his food at the words. “What?” He managed to get out. “You think he… for… me?” He was having a hard time forming his sentences. Shirasu was looking at him with amusement, but he didn’t deny the claim. “No way. You’re wrong. That’s just…”

“Right?” Shirasu pressed. “Think about it, Nori. Is it really that hard to believe?”

Nori opened his mouth to reject, but he ended up frowning in thought. He remembered their first conversation, and all the ones after that. It suddenly clicked and the pitcher groaned, putting his head down on his desk. “Oh my god…” Nori could feel his face burning. “Shirasu… what do I do?” But he didn’t get an answer, just laughter.

You never ask about, because you feel like, when he’s ready, he’ll tell you.

You remember the first day you met, how he was dressed in dirty tennis uniform and his eyes looked a little swollen from crying. But the contrasting smile on his face, the actual excitement in his voice when he asked you about basketball, the way he dropped his tennis bag and practically flew onto the street court like the world was finally off his shoulders...You’ll never forget that.

He asks you, one day, if you’ve played tennis and you have to shake your head no. It’s always been basketball for you. But as you teach him how to play, you notice how nimble he is, the silly way he tries to add an odd jump or some kind of acrobatics with that silly grin or sweet laugh of his. You don’t have the heart to tell him that that’s not allowed in basketball, so instead you find a way to compliment his speed and reflexes instead.

The grin you receive stays burned in your mind for a week.

-

Koganei, Shinji your mind supplies, ends up being a ray of light in your life that you never know you needed. You think that all the people in your family are enough, but Shinji fits in like a missing corner puzzle piece. He’s always there with a smile, bursting with energy to brighten any mood, and when he drags you to join the Seirin basketball team, you can’t help but follow with a smile.

“I’m good enough to play now, eh, Mitobe?” It’s been about two months since you met in the park, on the public courts, but it’s not like Shinji is bad at basketball. He’s a fast learner.

“That’s what I thought~,” Shinji continues, gently elbowing your side before you can even reply. This is a thing with him now, being able to guess your answers and not force you to talk and it’s sort of relieving.

He introduces you both to the other members of the team, tripping over basketball terms but doesn’t let that bother him. The others laugh and suddenly, you find yourself on a team that you feel incredibly comfortable with already.

-

“I...Hey, Mitobe.”

You look over the table, over the spread out books and papers to see Shinji staring out the window. He looks strangely melancholy and you immediately decide it’s not a good look on him.

“You wanna go play tennis? I have an extra racket and there’s some courts down the street, I can teach you…” His words don’t have the same energy they usually do and you make a soft noise of agreement.

You’ve seen the extra rackets in his room, the worn out tennis shoes under his bed, the medal folded carefully and hidden in the top drawer of Shinji’s desk. Besides, he sort of owes you in a way for teaching him basketball.

There’s a smirk on your face and then a hand is in your face, finger flicking your forehead.

“You offered to teach ME basketball!!! I owe you nothing, Mitobe!!”

You laugh and he laughs and by the time you finish laughing and wrestling, it’s too dark for tennis anyway.

Shinji waves you off home with a smile and you’re glad that his eyes are here in the present once again.

-

The day you actually have no practice, Shinji corners you with an old racket carefully wrapped with new grip tape and it fits perfectly in your hand.

“There’s no escaping now, Mitobe.” Shinji’s lips curl in the cutest way, and oh, that’s a new thing that’s been developing.

If you thought he was fast on the wooden floors in the gym, Shinji soars on the tennis court. You’re immediately reminded of the early days, months ago, when you were teaching him basketball. The acrobatics suddenly make sense and you’re truly amazed at how talented Shinji is with tennis.

There’s a question on your lips, words tangled with your tongue, but seeing the smile as he pulls off another impressive backhand, you swallow them down with your pride as he continues to kick your ass, six games to none.

-

When you walk home, you pass a storage container and you swear that Shinji hesitates, but then it’s like he vanishes in thin air and is skipping ahead in front of you, yelling for you to catch up.

-

You continue playing tennis with each other when you have time, in the off season of basketball, and you improve enough to at least take one game from Shinji. The courts remains weird to you, you feel too big when Shinji is small, darting around the singles boundaries like nothing. He still wins every time, and his victorious twirls of his racket at the end of every game only aggravate you a little bit.

It still bothers you, a bit (a lot), the joy that Shinji exudes on the tennis court, because the moment he steps off, his light seems a little dimmer, his smile less wide. You never noticed before because you had never seen him on the tennis court. But know that you have, you can’t unsee it.

-

He treats you to a parfait one day and spends a long time trying to order his own. When your orders are taken, he leans on his hand, jiggling his leg a bit as he stares around the room. It’s nothing unusual, not with the adrenaline still running through you both from tennis. It was a long game and the last you’ll be able to play for a while because of basketball starting again, which you find is a little sad.

Tennis isn’t too bad, it turns out.

“You know…” Shinji starts, still looking around the shop, eyes gaining that faraway look that you had only seen one time before.

“I used to play doubles. In middle school.” He sighs, moving his right hand so he can stare at it, curling his fingers into a fist. “I was pretty good. My partner was better than me, but together we-”

He’s cut off by the parfaits arriving and food distracts you both. It’s not until later that you realize that Shinji never finished his story. You stare at your phone for a good hour, trying to craft a text to tell him to continue, that you’re curious, that you hate seeing that faraway look in his eyes, that you’ll play tennis with him anytime as long as he plays basketball with you.

You want to ask him why.

Your phone drops on your chest as your fall asleep before hitting send.

-

“Tennis? Isn’t that Koga’s thing?” Izuki asks you, eyebrow raised. You shrug, because it’s true, but you need more people for this.

“No.” Riko states, not even bothering to look up from her practice outline.

“Uh, um.” Hyuuga stares at you a little flustered. “Did you know I played tennis when I was younger? What is this…”

“Of course!” Kiyoshi replies with an easy smile. You knew he would agree but his next words (“Can I play with my badminton racket?”) make you wonder if you should have tried to convince Izuki a little more.

-

“Hey, Mitobe! You busy Saturday? After practice, I mean.”

It hurts to deny Shinji, especially the pout he gives you, but you’ve been planning this for so long, you’re not giving in now.

You just hope Kiyoshi remembers to call Shinji in time.

-

The court is thankfully empty when you arrive, and you set to stretching immediately since you forget to stretch your legs after basketball practice.

Hyuuga arrives next, dressed smartly in tennis gear, racket and grip tape worn like he still plays every now and then. He sits next to you, like he’s expecting you to say something, but you just blink and go back to stretching.

Hiyoshi and Shinji arrive together, but you hear Shinji before you see him.

“-SO EXCITED that you want to play tennis! I’ve taught Mitobe as much as I can, but I really want to play doubles again, you know? I was a doubles player in middle school, so with you, we just need ONE more person…” Shinji enters the court and finally sees you and Hyuuga, and the shock on his faces worries you a bit.

But when everything sinks in, especially Hyuuga’s neon green tennis shorts, Shinji smiles, wide and bright, just like the first time you met him, and you know that you made the right decision.

-

It takes one game to realize why Shinji played doubles. It’s not that he wasn’t good at singles, he still beats you every time after all, but as he pairs up first with Kiyoshi (“It’s only fair, Hyuuga!! He doesn’t know how to play!” “That’s beside the point, Koga!”), you can see the imprinted, practiced comfort in his stance.

A few times, when you were playing singles with him, you’ve caught Shinji glancing backwards, like he was looking for something, for someone, but after a quick shake of his head, he was back looking at you and slamming a serve into your court.

Here, now, he’s smiling back at Kiyoshi, giggling as he lobs the ball past Hyuuga and smashes it between both your rackets after you return it. You and Hyuuga win the set, but only because Kiyoshi can’t serve and faulted all his service games.

You shuffle pairs, laughing a bit to yourself as Hyuuga tries to to show Kiyoshi how to serve and ends up just yelling at him when Kiyoshi serves into his face.

Shinji’s off the to side, fixing his shoes. You pick at your grip tape, not wanting to rush him, and when you look at him again, he’s leaning on his hand, staring at you with, what you think (what you hope) is a fond look. It squeezes your heart a bit and when Shinji jumps up and grabs your hand, you hope he can’t feel your heartbeat.

“Partner.” He says. “My Partner.”

This something definite about his words and you swear it’s the sun and the heat and the exercise making your face red. Shinji laughs, bright and loud again, your favorite, before shoving you to the back to the court.

“I used to specialize in netplay and I trust you enough to cover me.” He pauses again. “Partner.”

You’re more than flustered but take the back, definitely not at all distracted by Shinji leaning over, hands gripped around his racket, in the middle of the court.

“Serve, Mitobe!!” Hyuuga calls.

Shinji looks back at you, and there’s a moment of eye contact where you think, that maybe- just maybe--

You serve the ball and get your first service ace.

-

By the end, you think that you’ll never hear the end of Hyuuga’s complaints, saying that you and Koga obviously practiced doubles together and that this was a setup against their captain and that they’ll be running laps forever at practice on Monday.

Kiyoshi tries to comfort him by suggesting a badminton rematch but that makes Hyuuga even angrier.

This time, when Shinji steps off the court, his smile stays just as wide as it was on the court.
-

As the sunsets, you walk home side by side with Shinji, shoulders occasionally brushing.

The word “partner” still echoes in your mind and it would be so easy to reach out, to grab his hand, to say what you think that word means. But, as usual, Shinji beats you to it, grabbing your hand and lacing your fingers together.

“We won nationals. In my 3rd year.” Shinji isn’t looking at him, staring at the road in front of them instead. “It was the best moment of my life, we were the top of Japan, the best middle school doubles pair. But, ah-”

You gently squeeze his hand and get a smile and squeeze in return.

“He wanted to go to a different high school. I asked him if he would still play tennis, if there was a chance that we might meet again after high school and…” He drifts off and you let him. There’s no rush. You don’t need to know now, you don’t need to know ever, but you’re more than happy to listen.

“I lost my partner and my dream in the same day...but it was also day I met you, Mitobe Rinnosuke. You and basketball.” Shinji laughs and looks up at you. “I never thought I would find a new dream or even a new partner, but here I am and here you are. You really saved me that day, you know?”

You want to say that he saved you, that he brought smiles and friends and light into your life, but you decide that you want to beat him to something for once.

As you gently kiss him, you can feel the cute curl of his lips and it tastes a little saltier than you expected, but that’s fine. It’s perfect.

He squeezes your hand again as you part and pulls you down the street, almost flying like he was on the tennis court.

Offhand, you wonder when his wings will spread in basketball, but there’s no rush. You both have an infinite amount of time left.

Together.

As soon as they got the text in their group chat, Umi and Kotori knew something was wrong.

First of all, it didn't have nearly enough exclamation points; in fact, it didn't have any at all. Just one, single word, with none of the usual flourishes and ramblings that came along with a message from Honoka. All they got was a single, solitary, "okay."

Instantly, Kotori got a message from Umi, just as she was hitting send as well.
11:29 Umi Sonoda: Is Honoka alright?
11:29 (•͈⌔•͈⑅): Do you think Honoka is okay?

She couldn't help herself, she giggled as she took a screenshot of the too cute exchange.
11:29 (•͈⌔•͈⑅): I don't think so... She never sends one word replies.
11:30 (•͈⌔•͈⑅): Even when she's busy, it's never one word...
11:30 Umi Sonoda: I agree. What should we do?

What should they do indeed? Kotori tapped her finger to her lip, humming softly to herself.
11:31 (•͈⌔•͈⑅): If we ask her directly, she's going to say everything's alright and we worry too much.
11:31 (•͈⌔•͈⑅): But at the same time, I can't ignore this if Honoka really isn't feeling well!
11:32 Umi Sonoda: I can't ignore this either.
11:32 Umi Sonoda: Maybe we should invite her out somewhere tomorrow?
11:33 (•͈⌔•͈⑅): Umi, are you asking Honoka and I out on a date?

The brunette snickered to herself as she watched the ellipses next to Umi's name appear, disappear, then reappear again. Umi really was adorable. Ever since the three of them had agreed to give this a shot, Umi had been too shy to suggest anything... Kotori's brows raised, as her lips curled in a small smile at the words that appeared on her screen.
11:34 Umi Sonoda: Yes.
11:34 (•͈⌔•͈⑅): I was wondering when you were going to ask. I'd love to go!
11:34 (•͈⌔•͈⑅): Oh, but this should be all about Honoka.
11:35 Umi Sonoda: Yes, absolutely. Do you have anywhere in mind?
11:35 (•͈⌔•͈⑅): Actually, I have just the place!

-

Honoka sighed quietly to herself as she waited for her girlfriends to arrive. To be totally and perfectly honest, she really hadn't felt like going out today. She couldn't remember the last time she had felt so down in the dumps for no apparent reason, but she knew if she told Kotori and Umi about it, they'd worry about her. And she absolutely, positively, couldn't have that! So when they asked her out today, she couldn't say no...

They were supposed to have been here ten minutes ago though, which is was downright strange. Especially since Honoka herself had arrived 15 minutes late, which was pretty typical of her, but Umi was always on time. They said they would be here soon though; maybe they were caught up in something? Before she could even think to take her phone out of her purse, however, two different hands laced their fingers through her own. The one on the right was calloused from archery practice; the one on the left was soft and warm. Honoka couldn't help herself, she beamed as she turned to smile at her two best friends in the whole wide world.

"I was wondering where you two were!" She laughed, swinging their hands between them. "What took you so long?"

"Sorry for making you wait Honoka," Kotori smiled as she squeezed Honoka's hand in her own. "Umi and I just got a little sidetracked with something. Isn't that right, Umi?"

They both turned to the other girl, who smiled back at the two of them. "Yes, we're sorry about that. Let's get going, shall we?"

Honoka grinned and nodded, and without thinking began to lead the way...! Only to find that neither Kotori nor Umi were following her. She tilted her head to one side as she turned back to look at them, a confused frown crinkling her brow. Her girlfriends exchanged sneaky smiles, before turning to face Honoka.

"Honoka, how about you let us lead the way this time, okay?" Kotori asked sweetly, her voice dripping with honey. Honoka tilted her head to the other side; now she was REALLY confused. Weren't they just going window shopping? What was going on?

Umi took a step forward, placing a hand on Honoka's shoulder. "Just close your eyes and trust us, okay?"

She pursed her lips and glanced between the two of them. "O... kay. This better not be a joke!" She declared loudly, before closing her eyes.

"And no peeking!" Kotori chimed in with a giggle. A tiny swell of affection filled Honoka's chest as the two girls began to walk, carefully leading her forward.

It seemed to take forever to get wherever they were going. Occasionally, Umi and Kotori forgot to warn her about a step, or that there was a crack in the sidewalk, but every time Honoka tripped, they held her steady and kept her from falling down. So despite the clumsy instructions and the missteps and the "I think it's to the right, actually''s and the "Honoka look out!"'s, Honoka found that she didn't mind this at all.

It was nice just being with the two of them, and it was all Honoka needed to cheer her up.

Finally, they came to a stop. "Okay Honoka, you can open your eyes now!"

And what she found in front of her made her heart stop, then race forward.

"I-Is this... what I think it is?!" She asked breathlessly, turning first to Kotori, then Umi.

"Yes, and we have reservations for two hours." Umi smiled, Kotori giggled, and Honoka flung herself at her girlfriends, pulling the two of them into a tight hug.

"You two are the best!" She shouted, nuzzling her face against Kotori's shoulder and Umi's neck. They hugged her back, Kotori rubbing Honoka's back while Umi ran her fingers through her bright orange hair.

"We knew you were feeling down, so we decided to take you out to cheer you up." Kotori beamed. "We also told them how much you love fresh bread, and they have all kinds for us to try inside. So... ready to go?"

When Honoka finally pulled away from them, she had tears in her eyes, but the happiest smile on her face. "Yes, of course!" She exclaimed, and with that, the three of them stepped into the dog cafe together, and were greeted by a symphony of excited barking and wagging tails and big brown eyes.

It was the best day of Honoka's life.
