Bonus Round 1: Memory

Bonus Round 1: Memory

Let's start our summer by looking at the past—things that happened in canon, or maybe in an AU, or maybe just as wishful thinking...

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on June 9 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post! You prompt should consist of one scenario beginning with the phrase "Remember when", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from our list of nominated fandoms.
    • Your prompts can take the form of recalling canon facts/events ("Remember when Nozomi and Eli got parfaits after school?"), non-canon events ("Remember when Megumi and Jin met at the Tadokoro Family Reunion?"), or somewhere in-between ("Remember when Bokuto and Kenma first met?"). Headcanons and AUs are welcome!
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Rei & Nagisa). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Rei/Nagisa). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Post fills by leaving a responding comment to a prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

Posts not using this format will be understood to be unofficial discussion posts, regardless of what they contain. They, like all comments in this community, are subject to the code of conduct.

    SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

    For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
    Fills 4-10: 10 points each
    Fills 11-20: 5 points each
    Fills 21+: 2 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

    Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only.

There was something shining in the water.

She never really came down to the riverbank all that often, except when the pipes leading up to her place got stuffed with something or the other and she had to empty it out. One of the downsides to living in a literal mountain, but she enjoyed the peace and quiet which afforded her time and concentration to her studies.

What she didn’t expect this time however, was a crow pecking at the shallows of the water where pipe met the river, squawking terribly and stubbornly refusing to move even after she attempted to shoo it away. It did leave eventually though, as a stick was just as strong as any spell was when it came to birds, and found there was a body in the water. Well, no, just a head. Had it come from somewhere upstream?

Emptying out onto the shore was an effort, as its hair had been sucked up and clogged part of the piping. However, for the most part, the head was in pretty good condition. What remained of the head’s neck ended with jagged incisions that looked like a bad hack job, and the part of the spine that connected up with the skull looked like it had been dug out with a knife. The trachea and oesophagus were more or less still intact, but upon closer inspection, wasn’t there something lodged in there?

But whatever, she’d repair the pipe first and worry about evaluating the head later. Easier said than done as she spent the rest of the morning pulling clumps of rock and blue hair out of the pipe’s filters.

-

While hauling bodies was never her favourite part of her specialisation, she was always keen on a mystery. And luckily, this head was turning out to be a very good one. The object she’d seen lodged in the trachea was a thread, hanging just before the cut in the neck. So, presumably, whoever this was had tried to swallow something before it died. The string wasn’t that far down it’s throat though, meaning whatever the object was, was probably still in its mouth.

She felt a little bad about dislocating the head’s jaw to get it open, but it was better than breaking it. However, it turned out the object was nothing more than a key, odd in its shape and make, but otherwise wholly uninteresting.

Pity. Still, at least she had a head to mess around with. She had to practise her re-animation anyway.
Which turned out to be a big mistake.

-
It’s not like she wanted to be stuck carrying this head around. But the fact of the matter was that she never expected her dabbles to actually work. Let alone on some head she’d found floating down stream.

It’s not like she drew the runes perfectly like she always did, the inscriptions were sloppy, and the tribute nowhere near enough to raise the dead let alone animate it. But it did and now she had, quite literally, a talking head.

It had blinked into awareness rather than animation, and despite lacking a body, seemed… to be taking the whole ‘being just a head’ thing rather well. It had smiled, and asked her who she was.
Regrettably, her shock overwhelmed her curiosity and she fled the room.
-

After a long moment of standing outside her front door and pacing, she eventually returned to the table where the head had managed to wiggle itself across the floor to disturb the runes. Despite the break in the circle, it continued to wiggle around.

Once she had calmed down enough to clean up and (carefully) place the head on her study table, and decided to question it. The head, she found, used to study destructive elemental magic when it was alive, and mused fondly on methods and spell constructions that she wasn’t technically supposed to be privy to (mixing magic was generally frowned upon). It claimed not to have remembered the events leading to its death though, but recalled the way it had died. A clean slice across the neck and that was that. But she was a little sceptical though, remembering the condition of the head when she’d found it.

Still, it was probably tactless to ask about that.

Of course, it in turned asked her questions too, more curious about where it was rather than who she was (Not that she was mad about that, but really, if she were brought back to life, she’d probably want to know about the person who revived her.) But its eyes lit up as soon as it heard where she lived, a hollowed out networks of reinforced (and redecorated) caves in the side of a mountain.

It soon cottoned onto the fact she wanted to know more about it, where it had come from, what its name was (if it were a legally registered caster, she’d probably be able to find out a lot more from national records), and what the key was for. And it refused to give up anything else unless she showed him the top of the mountain.

An odd request, but for the pursuit of knowledge, she supposed it was a small price to pay. So, she hiked up to the top of her mountain home and stuck it up there for a while; returning to her place to clean up her spell circle. However, that was another of her bad decisions that day. By the time she’d come back, the crows had taken one of its eyes, and tipped it over to peck at the remains of its neck.
It was then she noticed there was something unsettling about the head. It didn’t seem angry or sad or, well, anything really considering it was getting eaten by a marked crow.

(Wait. Marked? Was that the same crow from before…?)

The crow bristled then, turning around once to fix startlingly blue eyes on her before taking off, vanishing into the late afternoon sky. The head simply sighed, and remained silent for the rest of the evening.

Another mystery, it seemed. And she mused over it, turning the facts around in her head even as she carried the head back down the mountain, treated the hanging flesh and replaced the missing eye with one from her stores (It wasn’t the best fit, not the radiant blue of the previous, but well enough to at least function.)

Between the key, this head’s knowledge of spellcasting and the marked crow, she wondered if the head met its end because of a grudge or assassination.

It would be very interesting to find out though.

And she did love a good mystery.
