Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Bonus Round 4: Quotes

A shipping olympics favorite, this round uses quotes of all sorts to fuel your creative endeavors.

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on July 21 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.

    • The quote can come from anywhere. Famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, your neighbor, etc.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Makoto & Rin). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Makoto/Rin). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!

Not like Bokuto, in any universe, was a keen and subtle observer of human relationships, but he knew enough to know that the way he liked Kuroo was a different thing. It wasn't like how he liked Konoha or Sarukui or Yukie or even later like he liked Akaashi (and Akaashi could see practically into Bokuto's soul, so). From that very first sleep away training camp where the two of them had made themselves sick competing over who could drink the most milk, Bokuto felt different when Kuroo was around, immediately close, distance irrelevant.

Bokuto thought about it sometimes, about telling Kuroo Hey man, I think I might like you and nah bro, like LIKE you like you and then just waiting to see what happened. They wrestled and slapped at each other enough for Bokuto to know what Kuroo's hands felt like, would feel like in his. Was that the thing he wanted, he used to ask himself, but the question answered itself eventually when Bokuto found himself instigating roughhousing on the thinnest pretexts possible. Over time I think I might turned into I definitely do.

He'd just never gotten around to actually doing something about it. He didn't think Kuroo would freak out, and he wasn't afraid of them not being friends. Bokuto was just happy, happy to see Kuroo whenever they could, during practice matches or on weekends they were both free. It was easy to get drawn into Kuroo's pace as soon as Bokuto saw him, and Bokuto always was one to get lost in the moment without too much thought. On the way home, in the quiet of the train, Bokuto would think, Damn, I really meant to tell him this time and I'll try again next time.

That was fine too, though. Bokuto was happy this way, not in a rush to get to some other stage when just seeing Kuroo made him this happy already.

During third year, Bokuto didn't realize anything was different at first, occupied with the fun of playing and all his favorite people gathered together, plus a bunch of new weirdos who were clearly going to be his favorites too. It wasn't until the second night that Bokuto started to notice the way Kuroo's attention strayed consistently back to Tsukishima. His gaze, his conversations, they all looped back to that kid as if he were a comet sucked into a long but predictable orbit around a new sun.

Or a moon, more like, Bokuto supposed. Also it was really not hard to see Tsukishima looking back, just because he wanted to look so unconcerned and secretive but was so terrible at it. He seemed pretty confused about it too, poor kid.

"Hey, Bo," Kuroo said when they were taking the watermelon break, competing lazily over who could spit seeds the farthest, knees flopped companionably against each other. "Do you think…"

"Hm?" Bokuto asked when Kuroo trailed off.

"Never mind." Kuroo's next shot was preoccupied and substandard. Both of them made a face.

Fuck it,, Bokuto thought. "You should go for it." Kuroo blinked at him, and Bokuto nodded towards where Tsukishima was dumping his watermelon rind in the trash can, making faces at his hands. "He likes you too. Well, he keeps looking at you. He might be trying to kill you with his mind, I guess."

"He does not," Kuroo hissed, ducking his head. He glanced at Bokuto out of the corner of his eye. "Is he looking now?"

"Uh-huh," Bokuto lied. They needed all the help they could get. "That kid has no idea what he's doing, though. Are you sure you're up for that kind of charity case?"

"And how do you have any idea what he's doing?" Kuroo asked, eyebrow raised.

"Because I'm an amazing training camp love cupid, of course!" Bokuto announced, instead of admitting that it was because as it turned out he was kind of a charity case himself.

Kuroo burst out laughing. "You're a moron, is what you are!"

"NON-BELIEVER!" Bokuto hollered back, and then he shoved Kuroo off the step they were sitting on.

They could still shove and shout at each other, Bokuto consoled himself. Nothing would change at all. He'd just keep hitting the ball that was in front of him as hard as he could and everything would work out okay.

"Is that really okay?" Akaashi asked on the last day of camp, standing next to Bokuto, both of them watching Kuroo coax some intensely grumpy contact information out of Tsukishima. "If Tsukishima weren't such a tree, Kuroo-san would look like we need the neighborhood watch."

Bokuto swallowed at least three comments about climbing. He opened his mouth to shout something stupid, but then he looked and saw that Akaashi's eyes were sympathetic. He knew, of course Akaashi knew, because he was an amazing genius.

"AKAAASHI," Bokuto hollered melodramatically, throwing his arms around Akaashi's shoulders. "My best friend is abandoning me! You'll still love me, right?!"

"Seriously, Bokuto-san," Akaashi muttered, but he patted Bokuto's shoulder too and told him it would be all right.

It was all right already, Bokuto thought. It would just take some getting used to.

the warmest crackle
(23 lines)

Do you know of
the point
between being and wanting,
to desire
so, so much that you don’t remember how
to put out the flames
anymore?

And it’s fine to burn, it’s fine
to whittle down, only a husk,
because it’s from your discarded skin
you’ll emerge
tempered and voracious,
victorious in
rebirth.

(He watches
your first sparks, your dying embers,
he watches
you, like you’re
his sunrise and moon-fall,
and within his circle of arms,
you linger
in the warmest crackle of all:
his love.)

hunger games/catching fire au otherwise, no tags! (it's a really tame hunger games au lol)
516 words

lmao hannah your prompts always inspire me to go for hunger games aus?? thank u for unintentionally letting me live my dreams

In the past, had this happened earlier, had it happened pre-Eijun, well, Chris might not have cared how it ended. Survival would have been something he wanted, but not of the utmost importance because back then he had nothing to hope for, nothing to live for. Nothing to make the hell that he'd been living in since winning the Games years ago anything but that.

But now, now it's different. Eijun stepped into his life in not the most ideal or typical way--as a tribute volunteering for a friend chosen, a naive and idealistic tribute Chris would mentor through the Hunger Games that year. He'd had no expectations for Eijun to win--he never had expectations for any of them to win--and the last thing Chris had expected was for Eijun to be the one to make it through, for Eijun to be the one who kicked down the walls around his heart.

They've grown close, slowly, over time since then--starting when they first met, his first glance at Eijun when he stepped onto that stage, and continuing until after his victory. And Eijun has awakened a feeling that Chris once thought was long gone: hope. He'd brought much needed light back into Chris' life, into his eyes.

And all along, it's been Eijun standing in front of him, as patient as he can get, like he's calling out here i am! here i am, chris-senpai.

there you are, Chris thinks later, when he's realized that Sawamura Eijun is an irreplaceable and valuable part of his life now, when the lines between friendship and companionship have blurred into more than that, bled into love.

Now, that they've both been reaped as victors for this new twisted version of the Games, he's got something to fight for. Something to protect.

"Let's go," Eijun will say, marching off in the direction they need to after Chris tells him a plan. They'll come up with something, then execute it perfectly because of this trust they have in each other.

They know that together, they can do anything. Even though each passing moment in these Games, each morning they wake up and start again has even more odds stacked against them.

Chris will catch Eijun's hand in his own, squeeze it tightly right before they move to take on the Career alliance, head to head, toe to toe. you'd better come back. please make it back, the gesture saying all it needs to without Chris having to say those words aloud.

Eijun smiles at him, just as bright as always even in this situation. It's the same smile Chris fell in love with, that he'll never stop loving. He squeezes Chris' hand, his answer. you know i will. you too, okay?

The odds might be stacked against them, the chances of getting to the end slim, and being allowed to win together? Even slimmer. But somehow they'll get out of this. Somehow they'll manage.

As long as they have each other to trust and love and stand by each other's sides? That's the greatest weapon they can have in all this.

“My readings confirm that he is not an illusion of some kind,” Inui said, reading out the ship’s analysis.

“That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you for the past hour!” Oishi threw up his arms in exasperation.

Or at least, one of the Oishis did. The other one just frowned. “Then what is he?”

Oishi — the frowning Oishi, who considered himself to be the main Oishi, since there had never been anyone to challenge him to that title until a handful of hours ago — had a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach. Since becoming the second officer of one of the finest starships in the fleet, Oishi had seen a lot of strange things on the bleeding edges of space.

Having a double of himself show up out of nowhere was a new one.

“He also doesn’t appear to be a clone,” Inui continued.

“Could this be a trick? Some sort of spy?” Tezuka asked. He was standing just a few inches from the original Oishi, his brow furrowed.

“Please, you have to believe me,” the second Oishi said. “I’m just as confused as all of you. One minute, I was on my ship, and the next minute I’m here, along with the other me.” He looked to Captain Tezuka. “Please, Kunimitsu, you have to believe me.”

Oishi’s eyes widened at his double using the captain’s given name so easily. When he looked to Tezuka, he seemed to be slightly surprised as well.

“I believe I have a working theory,” Inui said. “The artifact we picked up on planet X38-09 had unusual quantum readings. And this Oishi has similarly offset readings.”

“Inui, no offence, but could you stop talking about me like I’m a lab specimen?” the Oishi double asked.

“Of course, Commander,” Inui said. “I assume you are also a commander, yes?”

The double nodded.

“I don’t understand,” original Oishi said. “What are you saying, Inui?”

“What I mean to say is that both of you are in fact Oishi,” Inui said. “However, this version of Oishi has a quantum signature which suggests that he’s from an alternate universe.”

Both Oishis paled a bit. “What?”

Inui ignored the duo’s simultaneous reaction. “I’m sure you’re familiar with the concept. At some point, our universes diverged, making an alternate universe which runs parallel to our own.”

“So, at some point, we each made a decision that split our paths?” the original Oishi asked.

“Possibly,” Inui said. “Or not. There’s no reason that the difference would need to necessarily be centered around you. No offence to your importance in the universe, sirs.”

“I wasn’t thinking of taking any offence until you brought it up,” the second Oishi said, crossing his arms in front of him.

“In any case, we have one Commander Oishi too many,” Tezuka said. “Inui, you keep looking to see if there’s a way to isolate how to return our extra Oishi to his universe. Oishi, you check the artifact to see if you can find any indication on how this happened.”

“Aye, sir,” both Oishi’s responded. They looked at each other after speaking.

Tezuka shook his head. “Both of you might as well look into it. Two Oishis may be better than one.”

“You would think so,” the second Oishi said under his breath with a slight smirk.

Tezuka raised an eyebrow at that, but said nothing. He shared a quick look with his Oishi before turning and leaving.

Kikumaru frowned. “Sorry, Oishi. I can’t make heads or tails of the engraving on the artifact.” He entered a few more things into his tablet, careful not to let the retractable claw on his finger touch the surface. “I’ll take the scan of it down to the archives, see if I can’t find something similar from a nearby planet or something.”

Seeming done with business, Kikumaru grinned, leaning close to Oishi and letting his feline tail wrap around Oishi’s back. “So, anyway, after you’re done here, are we still on for the gym later? You were going to keep teaching me that human game with the balls that are fun to chase.”

Oishi coughed, squirming a little. “I think you meant to say that to the other Oishi.”

Kikumaru huffed loudly, crossing his arms. “This is unfair! It’s impossible to tell the two of you apart! I need to put a number on each of your cheeks so I can tell the difference!”

Oishi — the one that hadn’t been being caressed by Kikumaru’s tail — smiled at him. “Don’t worry, Eiji. I’m sure we’ll have this all settled soon so it won’t be a problem.”

Kikumaru pouted, looking between the two of them. “Well…” He looked at the alternate universe Oishi. “If you don’t have this all straightened out by then, I guess it might be fun if you came to the gym too.” He turned and flicked his tail in alternate Oishi’s face before leaving.

Oishi smiled while alternate Oishi frowned. “He’s right though,” Oishi said. “We might need to think of a way for people to tell us apart eventually.”

Alternate Oishi continued frowning. “I’m definitely not planning to stick around long enough for that. No offence to you or Lieutenant Kikumaru.”

Oishi frowned at that, but turned his attention to the instruments they were using to scan the artifact for anything useful.

“I don’t remember him being so forward when he was on my ship,” alternate Oishi muttered.

Oishi raised an eyebrow. “Eiji isn’t on your ship anymore, in your universe?”

Alternate Oishi shook his head. “No, he took a promotion almost a year ago.”

“Well, I guess we found the difference between our universes,” Oishi said with a laugh. “Don’t tell Eiji though, he might get jealous of his alternate self! But I bet you miss him though. I would.”

“Maybe it’s for the best…” Alternate Oishi shrugged. “Is your Kunimitsu alright with how he flirts with you like that?”

Oishi stared at him. “What do you mean? The captain is fine with us dating, if that’s what you’re asking. I cleared it with him, first thing.”

Alternate Oishi’s eyes widened. “Dating? Kikumaru?”

Oishi paused dead in his tracks. “Wait, you’re not?”

“Of course not!” alternate Oishi said.

Oishi’s brow furrowed as he considered. “Wait. The way you talk about Tezuka… In your universe…?”

“We’re married,” alternate Oishi said.

“Married?!”

Alternate Oishi nodded.

Oishi backed away from the console, feeling too distracted to be sure that he could work the analysis controls correctly.

“You mean you never considered it?” alternate Oishi asked.

“It’s not that,” Oishi said. “I just… I didn’t think he felt the same… and then… Eiji came along…”

Alternate Oishi crossed his arms. “I guess I can see how that happened. When Lieutenant Kikumaru first came aboard, I can’t deny there was a bit of an attraction, but… I couldn’t pursue it. Whenever I considered it, I thought of Kunimitsu.”

“Were you two already together at that point?” Oishi asked.

“No,” alternate Oishi said. “But… Well, you know how he is. There’s always another thing with Kunimitsu. Another mission to take, another mountain to conquer. He’s always putting his wants and needs last. But I just… I had faith that eventually… he’d be there.”

Oishi sat down on one of the lab stools, an odd feeling that he couldn’t quite put a name to bubbling away in his stomach. All too clearly, he could remember the early days of meeting Eiji, of feeling swept away with passion, but also… torn. He remembered the look on Tezuka’s face when he told him that he intended to date Eiji; an expression that he’d never quite completely decoded, and in the back of his mind, was too afraid to.

He could all too easily see how his path could have diverged right there with that look.

“Married?” Oishi pressed again. “How did that happen? Eiji’s only been on board for a couple of years, at least in my universe. If you and Tezuka weren’t together then…”

Alternate Oishi shrugged. “It happened on his birthday. Kikumaru was throwing an unrelated party, I forget for what, but you know how hard it is to get Kunimitsu to go to the crew social events unless you make it feel like an obligation. But instead, I skipped out on the party, and brought some wine to his quarters, and well…” He blushed, and Oishi’s eyes widened. “It was… Well, you know how he is. He doesn’t do anything spur of the moment. I felt like it must have been something he had been mulling over for a long time, and the timing was just. Right.” Alternate Oishi laughed. “He proposed to me less than half a year later. Said he’d kept me waiting too long as it was. And the rest is history… At least, for me.”

Oishi stared off at the wall.

“I’m sorry if that’s hard for you to hear,” alternate Oishi said. “I hope I haven’t stirred up any regrets.”

“No,” Oishi said, a bit too quickly. “No, I’m happy with Eiji.” He paused, looking at his feet. “And… I’m glad you’re happy with Tezuka too.” When he looked up at alternate Oishi he was smiling, but Oishi knew the smile all too well. It was the same smile that Oishi would flash at a homesick ensign on his first deep space assignment. It was comforting…

Pitying…

Oishi swallowed that thought. “Anyway, we should get you back to your… Kunimitsu… right?” He stood back up, looking back to the analysis instruments in the lab.

Alternate Oishi nodded. “I’m looking forward to it.”

Someone asked me
If I believed in soulmates
And I thought of you.

You, in the early morning
Fit against me like a puzzle
Curled and curved to my own curves and shape-

You, in the afternoon
Stealing kisses around corners of the court
Leaning down to meet me without thought-

You, in the evening
Smiling brighter than the full moon
Looking at me like I’m the north star-

Someone asked me
If I believed in soulmates
And I thought of you.
You, all the time
Following and floating along with me,
Changing as I change so that we’ll always fit together
No matter what.

So I told them “No, I don’t.”
Because being a soulmate doesn’t require work
And you put in the effort everyday.
They say that love isn’t easy.
But for me, you make it that way.

LOL aw that's cute! Haru would be intensely into this, absolutely, he would just report it in a very flat way the next morning.

major character death, supernatural, reviving the dead
563 words

Barren land stretches out ahead of him. A chill wind howls in the distance, circling dust against Akaashi’s ankles, loud enough to drown out almost all his thoughts. Only one rings loud enough to rise about the noise. Get him back, get him back, bring him back.

He raises his chin, gaze steeled; a pair of golden eyes peer back at him in return. Akaashi swallows the lump in his throat, and tries to sound resolute as he addresses the hooded figure.

“Twenty years of my life.”

Akaashi wishes he could see the person’s expression. That was the first thing he was taught about negotiations; you read the other person’s mood and tie your actions to it, baiting and teasing them until they give you the reaction you want. His interactions with Bokuto had been a constant state of push-pull, tease-tug, subtle hints that could almost be manipulations if you squinted, a lot of Akaashi no and Akaashi why and Akaashi you’re everything to me.

In return, he’d never quite known how to articulate how much Bokuto had meant to him, how to truly encapsulate the gravity of Bokuto’s cheerful, bouncy presence in words. He couldn’t describe quite how Bokuto lingered beside him during practice and after class, sprawled out on his bedroom floor on hot summer afternoons and demanded affection, or how he tasted when they locked lips and Akaashi could feel him smiling into the kiss. How Bokuto had been neon and starbursts, was passion where Akaashi had been taught not to show it all his life; he was down pillows, clear skies and storms, a warm hug.

Some thought that Bokuto couldn’t function without Akaashi. They joked that Akaashi was his handler, his trainer. Two days after his boyfriend’s death, Akaashi can confirm that it is the other way round. He takes a deep breath as the eyes behind the hood narrow. That’s never a good sign.

Akaashi’s hands curl into fists, fingernails digging into his flesh. “Thirty years.”

The figure with the hood smiles, baring their teeth. “This Bokuto Koutarou must mean a lot to you.”

Akaashi nods back in response. The figure chuckles again, reaching into their pocket and pulling two hourglasses out gingerly. The sand in the yellow one has completely drained, fallen to the bottom in a useless heap. The top half of the dark blue one is almost full.

Death snaps their fingers, and Akaashi is enveloped in warm light.

“I’ll return him to you,” they murmur, and Akaashi cannot tell if their smile is sinister or genuine. The light surrounding Akaashi glows yellow for a moment, enveloping him with something that he can’t quite place. It’s like being surrounded with a familiar laugh, or a pat on the back—a firm grip that feels just right, and then it lets go. Akaashi finds himself stumbling backwards, head spinning and body light. Somehow, he manages to speak.

“What… What did you do?” he asks, voice barely a whisper. Death glides towards him, and places a cold, bony hand on his shoulder.

“I’ve tied his life energy with yours. You both have about thirty years.” They lean in, covering Akaashi’s eyes with both their hands. “You’ll find yourself back two days ago. Nobody will remember Bokuto’s passing.”

Akaashi’s vision begins to blur. Death’s voice is the last thing he hears before he passes out.

“Except you.”

blood, angst
word count: 479

They build themselves up like a castle made of glass and when it shatters, they find themselves all over the place, too broken to even know where to start putting themselves back together.

They're fragile; they always have been, but without realising before. There's no way to deny it now when they're both left as shattered fragments of who they were, who they thought they could be.

Ryouta cuts his fingers on the pieces of Daiki and himself, until he's worried that there's more blood than glass, creating a lake for all of the pieces to float in, as if he can use it to glue them both back together.

It's going to take more than blood to repair the damage that has been done, though. It's going to take more than tears. Even if those are the only two things that Ryouta feels that he has a steady supply of right now, he knows that it won't be enough.

There's no use in mending something that will break again, no point in building themselves up to the sky, stretching themselves as far as they can go, when it only means that they have further to fall, so that the impact hurts all that much more.

Ryouta knows that mourning what he's lost isn't going to bring it back. It isn't going to change anything, and it isn't going to put the broken pieces back together. It's going to take nothing short of a miracle to do that, but the word has been thrown around at them so often that it's lost all meaning, just like everything else that they used to care about.

There are too many pieces and most of them are too small to be noticed at all, so microscopic that Ryouta worries that they've found a way to break his skin and enter his bloodstream without him noticing, attaching themselves back to him but in the wrong order, like a puzzle put together to show a picture different to the one intended, and he doesn't even know if it's one he'll recognise.

He doesn't even know if the pieces belong to him or to Daiki and he doesn't know if it matters. He wants to believe that it doesn't, but he fears that Daiki will disagree. Daiki has become disconnected from himself as well as everyone else around him. Ryouta doubts that he would share any part of himself freely with anyone; he might even dig his fingers into Ryouta and demand every little piece of him returned. Ryouta can't tell them apart, but that doesn't mean Daiki can't either.

It doesn't make a difference, when Ryouta knows that Daiki won't help. He can wait here, in pieces, for as long as it takes, and Daiki might never come, might just remain in pieces himself and never try to change that.

Still, Ryouta waits anyway.
