Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Bonus Round 4: Quotes

A shipping olympics favorite, this round uses quotes of all sorts to fuel your creative endeavors.

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on July 21 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." - M. Gandhi
    • The quote can come from anywhere. Famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, your neighbor, etc.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Makoto & Rin). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Makoto/Rin). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

bestiality (?), supernatural elements, also Kinjou refers to monster!Makishima as "it"
737 words

They said there was a monster who lived in the abandoned building tucked away on the back corner of campus. They said it was a horrible cross between a human and a spider, and that it ate students foolish enough to venture inside.

The official word said that the building was in an unsafe state of disrepair, and the only reason it hadn't been demolished was that it was tied up in the middle of an old property dispute. The structure and surrounding grounds were littered with warning signs, and the university disclaimed all responsibility for accidents that occurred when students chose to venture inside despite the warnings.

Ever the practical person, Kinjou favored the latter explanation. During all four years of his undergraduate degree, he had managed to avoid most of the rumors and late-night search parties that set out to find the monster. He had assumed it would only get better once he entered the doctoral program and was among an even more mature cohort.

He hadn't counted on the actions of the first-year students in the course he was TAing.

He had been running one of his weekly review sessions, but unlike most weeks, only one student had attended. He made a comment to that effect as they were finishing, and the student admitted that all of his friends had gone to the old, deserted building, but he had stayed behind because he was scared of the dark.

Kinjou barely waited to hear the end of the explanation before he ran out the door and across campus. In retrospect, he probably would have realized that was not the wisest course of action, but all he was thinking at the time was that he knew how dangerous old buildings could be, and he needed to find his students before something terrible befell them.

As he approached the building, he saw weak, bobbing lights in an upstairs window, as if a group were wandering around with flashlights. The door to the building was already ajar, and he slipped inside, calling out as he entered.

He received no reply, but he knew where the group was, and he made his way immediately up the stairs, testing the floor with each step and avoiding the rotten floorboards and fallen ceiling beams.

He finally caught up with the group at the far end of the second floor. He was about to yell out to them when they turned a corner, and the entire group screamed and ran back out of the house, most of them dropping their flashlights in fear.

Kinjou froze. In front of him, illuminated by the flashlights that shone from where they had fallen on the floor, was a massive, spiderlike creature. It was as large as he was, and even in the dim light, it's body and legs shimmered with a strange iridescence that put Kinjou in mind of an oil slick. Despite the spiderlike legs, its body and head seemed decidedly human. It took Kinjou a minute to realize that what he had at first thought was a large web behind the creature was actually it's hair fanning out in all directions.

Kinjou knew he should be terrified, but all he could think was that the creature was beautiful. He tried speaking, but the creature didn't seem to understand. He met its eyes and tried to convey all of his thoughts and feelings as he stepped forward.

The creature froze, but as he opened his arms and stepped forward again, it mirrored the gesture, and its hair stretched out towards him. They met in the middle of the room, the long strands of the monster's hair wrapping around his wrists and twining up his arms as they pulled him closer to the spider. He stroked the hairs as they coiled around him, and they reacted by squeezing him gently as if in a hug.

Far too soon, he was on the far side of the room face-to-face with the spider and securely cocooned in its seemingly endless hair. It lowered its head, and he felt the sharp bite of its needlelike teeth sinking into his shoulder just over his collarbone. He would have flinched away, but the creature's hair hugged him close, and he relaxed into the soft warmth that was spreading from his shoulder.

The spider raised its head and met his eyes again, and all Kinjou could think was "I love you."

supernatural/mythical elements?
word count: 796

The eternal seamstress sits in her position atop the universe, hands moving in an endless pattern, weaving the fabric of existence together and letting it join the rest of the matter that floats around her, unaware of her existence. Everything is made to destroy itself, to fray, to come apart at the seams, to find its way back to her so that it can be made into something new. It's the balance of everything that exists. Nothing is permanent, save for her and her rough, work-worn hands.

She creates and recreates in the blink of an eye, but the blink of an eye to someone eternal feels different to those who barely have two handfuls of decades to call their own, even if their lives span the moment it takes for the seamstress to end one stitch and begin another, but sometimes, the fabric of the universe gets caught. There are snags, or knots, and two things that were meant to be separate become tied together.

The seamstress doesn't stop to untie these, but leaves them be. There's no harm, she thinks, already having forgotten about it as she moves onto her next stitch. So two lives are bound together. So they will remain that way, in every incarnation they take. It means nothing to her.

Kuroo and Bokuto know that there's something special about them from the moment that they meet. It's not in the way they speak to each other, or the way it feels when they play their first practice match together.

It's something that they feel settling in their bones from the very first moment they lay eyes on each other. A sense of completeness, a sense that this is exactly where they belong, standing in front of each other as they are.

"Kuroo," Yaku mutters, elbowing him sharply in the side, making him jump a little with surprise.

Their captain is saying something. He's reminding Kuroo that he's a first year and that he should know his place, that he should be showing the proper respect, especially when meeting a team like Fukurodani.

Kuroo bows in apology, but his eyes catch on the boy on the other side of the net as he straightens up, golden eyes and spiked hair. He tilts his head to the side, like he's equally enthralled, and Kuroo doesn't know if that makes this any less weird, or if it just makes things even worse.

They don't get the chance to speak until after their first game. Kuroo wants to walk over to the Fukurodani side but while he's still deliberating over whether he should, he feels a tap on his shoulder.

"You're Kuroo, right?"

Kuroo straightens up, turning around. "You're Bokuto."

What he wants to say is, you're finally here, but he doesn't even know what he means by that. Instead, he just smiles, holding his hand out to shake. Bokuto has a firm grip, and they both start when their palms meet, like something electric has run through them both.

Kuroo coughs awkwardly, not knowing how to mention it. "Uh. You're a wing spiker, huh? You're pretty good. You're not going to make it past my blocks in the next game, though."

"Yeah?" Bokuto grins. "We'll see about that."

They don't talk about it until a year later.

They've spent that entire time gravitating towards each other, whether they mean to or not. They go out with each other whenever they can spare the time, they text, or call each other, because nothing makes Kuroo feel as right as he does when he's interacting with Bokuto in some way.

He doesn't know if the crush he has on Bokuto is because of whatever this strange feeling is, but he does know that it's reciprocated. He doesn't know what to do about it.

Not until Bokuto leans closer to him one afternoon, when they're sitting in his room and playing a video game that Kuroo has borrowed from Kenma. He pauses when their noses brush against each other, then pulls back a little, hesitating.

"Bokuto," Kuroo says, his voice a little strained.

"It just feels right, you know?" Bokuto asks. "You feel right."

"Yeah." Kuroo closes the gap between them, but to rest their foreheads together. "I know what you mean."

"I like you," Bokuto tells him, picking his words carefully. "I think I love you? I don't really know how else to put this feeling, but you feel it too, right?"

"Yeah," Kuroo sighs, and this time he does kiss Bokuto, just briefly, before he pulls back. "Whatever it is, it means you're special. In a way that no one else is."

Bokuto grins. "We're special."

With a matching grin, Kuroo nods. Whatever this is, if it's with Bokuto, then Kuroo is happy enough.

crime/thief au, guns, blood, major and minor injuries
word count: 508

they make it across cities, across continents, each one a new oyster plucked from the ground for another pearl to add to their collection. nothing can stop them, after all, no matter how hard their enemies may try the two of them are an unstoppable force built on fighting and crash courses of lips and hands and hearts.

there are days, when they lay intertwined together in hotel cotton that he feels they could move across worlds if only their legs could move fast enough.

now imaizumi just hopes they can move fast enough to get out of this damn parking lot.

the loot is long gone instead of at it's proper drop point, and imaizumi doesn't give a shit. not when shoukichi is wheezing at his side and he can't tell where he's been grazed or actually shot between the red of his hair and the black of his suit. his own shoulder is screaming around the bullet lodged in it. the air is thick with the iron of blood, overtaking the gunpowder and bullets, ruining his ability to take in the situation as objectively as possible. there's no escaping on their bikes, likely eviscerated behind a barricade of cop cars, and he doesn't know if shoukichi is in any condition to hot wire the car they're hiding behind for them to run. and would it matter? would it outrun them all? do they have enough bullets in four guns to take them out of their way? could they make it home, one more time, so imaizumi could give shoukichi all the promises he's kept hidden behind his teeth?

"you're shaking, hot shot."

"shut up." he squeezes him tighter to his side, as if that'll help stop anything, "you can give me shit when you stop bleeding."

his laughter is raspy, quiet, not the boisterous and wild thing it should be. it feels like another bullet in his side.

"so, what's your plan?" he asks it as casually as he asks about breakfast, loading his gun with blood-slick hands.

"i..." imaizumi curls closer to him, lips pressed in a thin line. the police behind them say something, but it doesn't register to either of them, too lost in looking at each other, trying to say a hundred, a thousand things.

( i'm sorry

it shouldn't have been this way

you deserve more, more, the world, the sun, everything between,

i trust you.)

"okay." shoukichi replies, looking at him with that same sureness that never, ever seems to waver. "my plan then." imaizumi nods.

( "we'll always have this one plan in the back pocket, just in case!"

"that's the most dangerous, stupid plan i've ever heard. it could kill us."

"you don't know that. besides, if we're already in a pickle, you think it matters?" )

they press forward, lips meeting each other half way and far past the red tang of blood for a promise.

"for luck babe."

imaizumi loads his gun with a harsh clack.

"who needs luck when i have you?"

deity au?
word count: 804

The God of the Forest is a powerful one, his magic enough to look after every plant, every creature that lives in his care. There are tales about him that are passed between generations, changing a little as stories do when spoken instead of written, but there are certain things that remain the same.

The God of the Forest is incredibly beautiful; a rose that is worth daring the thorn, the morning dew that sits on leaves like gems that glint in the light of the rising sun. It is said that looking upon him is enough to heal any ailment, to prolong lives, and that is why all of those nearest to him have lived for so long.

The God of the Forest is deceptively strong; he may seem at first a gentle breeze, but even those have the ability to turn into storms, to wreak havoc, to leave everything in its path broken. He is the same. He is both the gentle tousle of a traveller's hair, and the devastation of a gale force wind.

The God of the Forest is fickle; this one changes, depending on who tells the tale. Some say that he changes his mind the same way the leaves change colour with the passing seasons. Others believe that there's something more to it, something that only he understands. It's easy to tell whether or not he likes someone. It's not quite as easy to tell why, or to predict whether it will ever change.

The God of the Forest, for all of his power, for his reach from one side of the forest to the other, stops for but one person.

His husband, born from stone, is rumoured to be as old as the God of the Forest himself, from an age that precedes the measurement of time at all. The tales are unclear whether he is a deity himself, a human, or something in between. What is clear is that the God of the Forest loves him, with his entire heart. Some believe that the entire forest grows purely for his husband, that it withers when they are parted, that the plants all bloom with extra vigour when they are reunited.

Those who live in the villages around the forest have learned to pray that the God of the Forest and his husband spend the coming year together, so that everything will grow as it always does. Young lovers whisper their vows into the leaves of the trees that grow by the edge of the forest, hoping their love will be blessed, that it will be as eternal.

"…Or so I hear," Tooru finishes, shrugging out of his human disguise and smiling at Hajime. "Isn't it lovely?"

Hajime snorts, unimpressed, lounging around their chambers as if he is not in the most sacred grounds of the entire forest. "I wanted to hear more about this great husband of yours."

"Oh, I have plenty of tales," Tooru grins, walking over to join Hajime on their bed. He places his hand on Hajime's chest, making vines and flowers grow from the point where his fingers touch stone-skin. "I can tell you all about how vital he is to the forest itself, the way he anchors all of it and protects it. I can tell you about how he protects the God of the Forest."

"The only person I ever have to protect you from," Hajime murmurs against Tooru's lips, "is yourself."

"And what a good job you do of it," Tooru smiles, kissing him. "I could go on."

"I know," Hajime grumbles, but he looks pleased. He pulls Tooru closer, his rough skin now covered in a light layer of moss from their proximity. "I have my own tales to tell of the God of the Forest too, you know."

"Unflattering ones, I bet," Tooru sighs.

"I could talk about how hard he works himself," Hajime says softly, kissing Tooru's shoulder. "The way he inspires everyone around him to work harder. The way he trusts in the forest to grow even without his aid. The way he loves his forest, and the myriad of ways that shows."

"Hajime," Tooru whispers. "Stop. You're embarrassing me."

"I thought you liked hearing stories about yourself," Hajime teases, kissing his lips. "I've never heard a single one about you being shy."

"You know better," Tooru mumbles, looking away. "Just like I know you can be bashful. These are the kinds of things that don't make their way into legend."

"You're right," Hajime agrees, smiling. He strokes Tooru's cheek. "They remain ours, and ours alone. We need those, too."

There are several things about Hajime that Tooru wants to keep to himself, but he doesn't voice the thought.

Judging by the way Hajime smiles and draws him into another kiss, he must already know.

20 lines of poetry (blank verse because i love iambic pentameter more than i love myself)

beneath the summer night dyed red with sun
along the western edge of evening's cape
as you stood in a meadow doing swings
I think that's when I fell in love with you

I think, a summer day at 3 pm
when sand and sweat were sticking to your face
you roared with a conviction scarce backed up
and at that time you first drew in my eye"

when morning chilled too much to wait outside
your presence near is all that i require
like fingers slipped inside a coffee mug
some things are meant to enter your routine

anticipation thawed between my lungs
a thing for which i did not have a name
all i could fathom was how natural
to feel you by my side, that was enough

cicadas greet us from their earthly shell
i kiss you like an hour hand drawn home

word count: 422

Autumn arrives with a chill in the air and a promise of more to come. It is a season full of change, and Tooru ushers it in as the King of Autumn always does, his eyes the colour of the trees as the leaves begin to fall, his hair bouncing lightly as he treads over the ground, calls for the harvest in the call of the birds, makes the necessary preparations before the arrival of winter.

Hajime watches from a distance. They are half a year apart; Tooru is the autumn, ever changing, and Hajime is the spring, gentle and nurturing. For three months of the year, Tooru is at work in one half of the world while Hajime works the other half. They get their reprieve, before they're set to work again, switching halves, like they're passing the entire world between their hands, fingers brushing around the edges of it. Hajime sows seeds that bear fruit when Tooru comes by with autumn; Tooru leaves whispered messages in the unchanging evergreens for Hajime to hear when they greet him in the spring. The world keeps turning, time continues to flow, and this is a dance that they have always known the steps to; a dance that will continue between others, if not them.

The summers and winters bring their reprieve, though; pockets of time during the year where they can find each other once again, twining around each other so tightly that they don't come unwound until it's time for them to part again.

"I miss you," Tooru will sometimes whisper across the world, and the autumn will end up feeling a little colder, a little bleaker. "I want to be with you again. I want to hold you in my arms."

He sees people wrap themselves tightly around each other to stay warm and he brings storms that night, unsure whether he's pleased or jealous of the way people seem to cuddle closer.

"I miss you too," Hajime will reply, and sometimes he will grow distracted by his thoughts of Tooru, the spring sun glowing a little too warmly, making people wonder if the summer has come early this year.

If only it were possible, but they both have their roles to play in the world and they know it. Their time apart is nothing, compared to their time together. The days will turn into weeks and the months will pass like nothing at all. The wheel will turn, and they will be together again.

Until then, they yearn, and wait.

Akashi/Nijimura, G, no tags, 439 words

Akashi dreams frequently about his last year at Teiko.

In the dreams, he's incapable of telling Nijimura to stay. History repeats itself, and the team devolves into something Akashi couldn't understand at the time. What's different is that Nijimura returns mid-season and is disappointed by their wayward spiral. This does not happen in real life, yet Akashi inevitably feels he's failed every time Nijimura gives him a tight smile.

In the intermittent space between sleep and lucidity, Nijimura will ask, "Did you have a bad dream?"

"No," Akashi will say as the memories fade from him, his mouth feeling like dry cotton.

Real life is a strange deviation from what he remembers. Nijimura stays in bed and sleeps through Akashi's alarm, emerging from his slumber only after their coffee maker has filled the second cup. "I like the columbia blend we had last week," Nijimura mumbles into the back of Akashi's head while Akashi scans through the news on his phone.

"That was a gift from a business partner," Akashi replies. He turns a bit when Nijimura noses at his cheek. "If you still have the packaging, I can place an order when I'm in the office."

Nijimura grins, eyes still puffy from sleepy. "Any chance you can-"

"I'll have an order shipped to your office too," Akashi reassures him. "Please go take your shower."

Akashi's can't technically hear the shower turning on from the kitchen, where he peruses through their fridge for breakfast options. Still, he relishes the ten minute of silence while jotting down items for their housekeeper to pick up. By the time Nijimura pads out of the bathroom on barefoot, Akashi's driver has already called him from the parking garage.

"Have a good day," Nijimura says while stealing the remaining toast in Akashi's hands.

"You too," Akashi says as he heads towards the door. He's pulled back by Nijimura at the last minute, Nijimura's face serious as he fixes Akashi's tie.

Nijimura smells like Akashi's shampoo. "I'm starting to think you do this thing wrong every morning just to test my patience."

"Shuuzou?"

"Yeah?" Nijimura grunts while executing the perfect windsor knot.

"Do you think frequently about Teiko?"

Nijimura's gaze shifts from the tie to Akashi's face. "Not really. Do you?"

"It's an inevitability," Akashi says quietly. He's not expecting Nijimura to pull him into a hug.

"Maybe," Nijimura replies. "But you don't need to think about shit that happened before. Think about now. Think about us."

That's logical enough.

It's not until he lets go of Akashi that Nijimura sighs. "I think you did the best you could."

Akashi thinks so too.
