Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Bonus Round 4: Quotes

A shipping olympics favorite, this round uses quotes of all sorts to fuel your creative endeavors.

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on July 21 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.

    • The quote can come from anywhere. Famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, your neighbor, etc.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Makoto & Rin). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Makoto/Rin). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

he is a storm

there is a raging torrent in his eyes
so fierce, so intense, that the
water chills you until it burns
a physical brand against your skin

you smoulder under his gaze
caught, helpless, small
he is a giant in your
eyes, sky-high and ascending

the fire licks his flesh,
bleached white bone turning
into black ash, that you
press against his lips

you watch him
inhale, exhale, inhale,
exhale, fall and then
rise

the storm rages on

Tooru comes home a little past midnight, smelling of expensive perfume, his hair tousled, and his jacket hanging off one shoulder. Hajime looks up from where he's sitting at the dining table, working on an article to be submitted to a sports medicine journal, and Tooru slumps dramatically against the door as he shuts it.

"You look like you had fun," he observes, and that makes a small smile tug at the corner of Tooru's lips.

"That's the idea." Rubbing a hand over his face, he sighs softly. "How is your article going?"

"Getting there," Hajime replies, pushing his chair back from the table a little as Tooru walks over to him. He grunts softly as Tooru sits on his lap, arms wrapping around Hajime's shoulders. "You're heavy, asshole."

"I'm tired," Tooru complains. "That was exhausting."

"You didn't like her?" Hajime asks, as Tooru tilts his head up, pressing their lips together. He wonders if that's someone else he can taste in Tooru's mouth, or if his imagination is just filling in the blanks for him.

"She was fine," Tooru replies, his breath warm against Hajime's wet lips. He kisses his way along Hajime's jaw, to his ear. "I just wanted to come home, though. Curl up on the couch while you worked on your article. Ask you to read it out to me. That sort of thing."

"We do that every other night," Hajime points out.

"I still would have preferred it," Tooru pouts.

"Why don't you go change into your pyjamas?" Hajime suggests, kissing Tooru again. "I'll finish up what I'm working on. We can cuddle on the couch for a while."

Humming agreeably, Tooru gets up again, walking towards their bedroom. Hajime watches him go, aware that there's a fond smile on his lips, but he doesn't even try to hide it. Besides, it's not like Tooru will see.

There are certain perils to dating a nationally renowned volleyball star. It varies, depending on who is asked. The gossip magazines and online forums have this to say about Oikawa Tooru's dating life: he makes a terrible boyfriend. He's too focused, too flighty, and he can't hold down a relationship for more than two weeks, at best.

He's been dating Hajime for close to ten years, now.

They keep it a secret, though. Nobody knows, outside of their immediate family and tightly knit circle of friends. Tooru's team doesn't know. Hajime's colleagues don't know.

Nor do the girls who go out to dinner with Tooru and call it a romance.

Hajime doesn't envy them. He doesn't have anything to be jealous of, anyway. The version of Tooru that he shows to the cameras is different to the one behind closed doors. Hajime is secure in the knowledge that no matter what happens, he's the one Tooru comes home to. He's the one Tooru talks to about his dates; the good at the bad, the interesting stories he's picked up and the awkward moments that Hajime can only laugh at.

He shuts his laptop and sits on the couch, just as Tooru comes out of their room, having taken a quick shower. He smells like himself now, of their usual brand of soap and the fabric softener that he likes to use on his clothes. He cuddles against Hajime, head resting on his shoulder.

"She was nice," he says at length, his fingers twined with Hajime's. "But I could tell from the beginning that she wasn't expecting it to last. I think my reputation has turned into a self-fulfilling prophecy. She told me that I give good hugs, though."

"Do you?" Hajime raises an eyebrow. "Is she sure?"

"Hmph. See if I ever hug you again."

"You're hugging me right now," Hajime points out, chuckling softly as he presses a kiss to the side of Tooru's neck.

"I'm going to stop," Tooru says, pulling his hands away.

"No you're not." Hajime pins Tooru to the couch, nuzzling against him.

With a quiet laugh, Tooru runs his fingers through Hajime's hair. "You're not usually this clingy when I come home from dates."

"I'm not being clingy," Hajime mumbles, burying his face against Tooru's neck.

Kissing his forehead, Tooru hums. "Of course not. You know what she asked for, though? At the end of the night? A selfie. I think she tweeted it, but I'm too lazy to check. I bet I look horrible."

"Absolutely terrible," Hajime agrees. "You're a beast. Who would want to date you?"

Tooru sighs. "You shouldn't talk to yourself so loudly, you know."

Hajime headbutts him gently, as Tooru pulls his phone out of his pocket.

"We should take a selfie too."

Hajime is used to this. He looks up as Tooru holds his phone ready. There's a three second timer, and Hajime uses that time to turn his head, pressing a kiss to the corner of Tooru's mouth.

Laughing, Tooru drops his phone. It falls onto the couch and then slides onto the floor, but he doesn't seem to mind, distracted by the way Hajime turns over and pins Tooru to the couch, kissing him harder.

"Hajime," he gasps. Tooru slides a knee between Hajime's thighs and their breath stutters into the space between their lips, before they close it.

It's not that Hajime is possessive. Some nights, it doesn't even bother him when Tooru crawls into bed in the early hours of the morning after partying all night with someone else. Tonight, though, he found himself wanting Tooru home, so that they could a least enjoy each other's company. Knowing that Tooru was wanting the same while he was out somehow makes it even worse.

"Come on," Hajime says, getting up. "Let's go to bed."

"How forward, Hajime."

"I meant to sleep, because it's late. Besides, we've been dating for nearly ten years," Hajime grumbles, even as he holds his hand out to help Tooru up. "We sleep in the same bed. I don't think I'm being that forward."

Tooru smiles, picking up his phone before taking Hajime's hand. "If you say so."

They turn the lights off, before curling up in bed together. Tooru scrolls through twitter, finally finding the selfie and then complaining about it. He's about to go through the replies to the tweet when Hajime pulls the phone out of his hands.

"You know that's not a good idea."

With a sigh, Tooru takes his phone back. He starts composing a new tweet, and attaches the selfie they took together. Hajime watches silently, his head resting on Tooru's pillow.

I love him so much, Tooru types out.

"Tooru," Hajime says gently. "I love you too, but don't."

"I won't," Tooru sighs, deleting the tweet, the same way he's deleted countless similar tweets before.

The volleyball world isn't ready for it. They're not ready for it. As frustrating as it is, they both know that.

"I do love you, though," Tooru murmurs, as he puts his phone to the side. "If I could, I'd…"

"Yeah," Hajime replies, pulling Tooru closer, resting their foreheads against each other. "I know, Tooru. I know."

542 words, memory loss, implied reincarnation, drowning imagery, implied character deaths serena stop writing vague things at 5am

There’s a boy at the corner of Hajime’s eyes and he holds half of Hajime’s heart, its beating, dripping palpitations never quite matching his own tired half. He is on the sands, like the waves, his presence is ever there but still receding.

“How did you get that?” rolls off Hajime’s lips, and the boy’s smile cracks mirroring the sea glass of broken bottles scattered across the shore, all of them abandoned, their intended messages sifting on trench floors.

(Signed, sealed, forever undelivered. )

“It’s not ‘you’, it’s Tooru,” brown eyes laugh but their owner’s hands wring, “and it’s rude to not remember who you gave part of your heart to.” A quiet inquiring trill. “Right, Iwa-chan?”

“The matter of fact is I don’t remember such a pact.” Hajime’s voice wavers. “Don’t avoid the subject.”

“It’s not my fault if the owner in question chose to forget, it’s not my due to return what you’ve neglected to collect.” Tooru giggles, cupped palms bringing the half of Hajime’s heart he has up for a kiss. It leaves Tooru’s lips stained red.

(It leaves Hajime wanting to wipe the smear off with either a fist or his own dry, dry mouth.)

But when he moves forward with the intention to do so, Hajime’s foot comes upon a bottle he never noticed was just before him, barely stopping himself from creating a nearly inevitable crunch, just that little bit shy of shattering something he never meant to upset. He glances towards Tooru and sees the deep inhale he takes, almost as if Tooru’s filling his lungs with hope and exhaling his past regrets.

Then, Tooru wanders closer.

Hajime’s languishing half-heart jerks, anticipating impact.

“See?” Tooru breathes, his face centimetres away from Hajime’s face. His hands comes up to brace themselves and their content against Hajime’s heaving chest. A warmth seeps through his flesh. He feels his heart mending itself (again). “Even when your mind doesn’t, your body still remembers.”

“Were we-- are we together? Are you,” Hajime swallows thickly, “important to me?”

Cold fingers slither up to frame the sides of Hajime’s temples, gently stroking his cheeks. Tooru’s eyes shine as the other boy tracks his. “As much as how important you are to me too, Hajime.”

A wave crests where they stand, wetting the tips of their toes, and just like that, Hajime finds foamy water rising to their necks, making their heads go under. Green glass shards sink past them, cutting skin in their wake, and blood blooms into the ocean like a crimson anemone unfurling to catch prey.

Hajime clutches onto Tooru before either of them is pushed apart by underwater currents and it is in synchrony when they hit the murky bottom that’s littered with barnacle-decorated parchments.

(This is where all the lost words slip out from broken message bottles and end up forgotten in.)

It doesn’t really matter how many times we forget or remember each other, Hajime blearily thinks before water engulfs his trachea and his vision, we’ll find a way to be together again, anyway— in another life.

Vaguely, he feels his and Tooru’s body hardening and branching, interwining into a something he’ll never really know.

come to life, automatic joy
915 words, AO3

in no sense of the word is oikawa tooru perfect, but that’s fine. wakatoshi doesn’t mind — he has never asked for oikawa to be anything more than exactly as he is. in any case, wakatoshi isn’t perfect either. oikawa’s certainly told him often enough, if never in those exact words. but that doesn’t alter the fact that wakatoshi is strong, and so is oikawa. oikawa’s mentioned that often enough, too.

“you certainly don’t pull your punches, do you, ushiwaka-chan,” oikawa says. his voice draws out the words, backhanded approval making light of the situation in a way the rest of his body doesn’t. head high and stance almost rooted to the concrete of the alley in the dark, every aspect of him challenging and unyielding with every moment he doesn’t try to run.

wakatoshi rolls his shoulders back in response, rubbing at his smarting shoulderblade, the tender ache left behind by a touch lacking any tenderness at all.

“neither do you,” wakatoshi says, and even in the dark oikawa’s grin lights up and cuts through the rest of his face. there’s no strain at all when he moves, not that wakatoshi expected to find any — that he can see, anyway. so they continue to circle each other, clockwork motions built out of tension built out of habit and, beneath everything else, expectation. when oikawa laughs the sound of that cuts too, but not in a bad way, low and clear and proud. when wakatoshi speeds up half a step oikawa follows suit, almost as if nothing changed to begin with.

he wonders whether oikawa’s mind might be shifted half so easily, though he doubts it. oikawa all but confirms the thought with what he says next:

“against you? i can hardly afford to.”

“likewise,” wakatoshi admits quietly, “but not for lack of trying.”

“well, what can i say — i can be rather stubborn. though i suppose you’d know all about that, too, wouldn’t you.”

it’s not a question, but when oikawa moves wakatoshi answers, lunging forward as oikawa darts to the side, sidestepping wakatoshi’s attempts to grab him by stepping in close and away, close and away. there’s a glint of silver as oikawa weaves in and out of wakatoshi’s reach, flowing swift and smooth with each movement, afterimages of oikawa’s steps taken and avoided.

finally wakatoshi reaches out, arm making contact not with oikawa but the wall just behind him. it makes oikawa himself stop anyway, gauging wakatoshi’s next move. but there is none. wakatoshi watching oikawa too, taking in the way his right leg rests slightly behind the rest of him, silver peeking out between oikawa’s jeans and shoes dull from oikawa’s shadow. and then it’s gone, oikawa’s foot crossing behind his other leg, jeans hiding the cool shine from sight.

“it’s rude to stare,” oikawa murmurs.

“yes,” wakatoshi says, “but i believe it’s also rude to keep other people waiting.”

“oh?” oikawa still hasn’t moved, but something in him changes, not so much tense as it is waiting. “i don’t remember giving you something to wait for, though?”

“i disagree.”

wakatoshi’s ready when oikawa tries to get away, lets oikawa duck in close and catching him as he tries to move out away again. beneath oikawa’s jacket his shoulders dip up and fall in, steady but softer than wakatoshi was expecting, his own hold pressing too deeply. he doesn’t loosen it, though.

oikawa clears his throat and wakatoshi jerks his head back up to oikawa’s face, only just realising he had been staring again.

“find something surprising?” oikawa’s voice tells wakatoshi he knows exactly what wakatoshi’s just realised. since wakatoshi doesn’t say anything, oikawa does. “disappointed?” he adds. his hands reach up for wakatoshi’s wrists but his eyes never leave wakatoshi’s face and the expectation is still so obvious on oikawa’s own, only now wakatoshi pauses to consider what oikawa has been expecting.

wakatoshi knows what he still wants, though — that hasn’t changed.

“not really,” wakatoshi says. they’re standing close enough that when oikawa’s brows arch wakatoshi sees, feels his own lips tug up at the sight.

“it doesn’t change anything.” he pauses. “not the fact we’d work well together, at least. you’re strong, oikawa.”

laughing, oikawa replies: “so are you, ushiwaka-chan. you don’t need someone like me to partner up with.”

oikawa leans back, not to draw away but so he can shift how he stands, both feet firm on the ground, silver and shadow and oikawa, oikawa. wakatoshi loosens his grip on oikawa’s shoulders — not holding on, just touching.

“i don’t need a partner,” wakatoshi agrees, and oikawa quiets, but not before huffing at him once, amused and i told you so rolling off the sound in equal measures.

“but,” wakatoshi continues, “it doesn’t mean i can’t ask for one.”

“and that would be me,” oikawa finishes.

“have you seen me ask anyone else?”

oikawa considers this, hums. “what makes you think i’ve been watching?”

wakatoshi lets both hands let go of oikawa entirely to rest by his sides instead. and it’s still dark but just beyond him the rest of the street thrums with life, leads on into a city that never sleeps, never misses a beat. no, wakatoshi doesn’t doubt oikawa at all.

“i’ve never found anything to convince me otherwise,” he says.

this time when oikawa smiles it’s just as bright, but not nearly as cutting, lighting up the rest of his face into something electric and fierce, one with the city yet still impossibly his own.
