Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Bonus Round 4: Quotes

A shipping olympics favorite, this round uses quotes of all sorts to fuel your creative endeavors.

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on July 21 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." - M. Gandhi
    • The quote can come from anywhere. Famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, your neighbor, etc.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Makoto & Rin). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Makoto/Rin). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

Kuroo never could find a good way to describe it. No matter where he was living or what he was doing, the feeling was always the same -- the sense of safety and peacefulness that came when he was almost back to wherever Kenma was.

He hadn't thought about it much as a child; it had simply been the excitement of knowing that he was almost at his best friend's house, and not having any other best friends for comparison, he had never had reason to think of it as anything special. It was just the happy feeling that he always got at the end of the street that told him he'd get to play with Kenma soon.

Even as they grew older, the feeling didn't really change. Some of the childish excitement faded, but it was replaced by a strong sense of belonging. It didn't matter what had happened that day, or what he needed to do that night, Kenma was always there, and Kenma always welcomed him, even if it was just to sit on the couch and study while Kenma played a game in the background.

He had worried when he left for college. It was the longest the two of them had ever been apart, and he was afraid of what it would feel like when he returned. When he stepped out of the subway and turned down Kenma's street though, he was hit by the same sense of returning and belonging, more poignant now for its absence, and he realized he needn't have worried.

The apartment they rented together as soon as they both finished college was the first time the homelike feelings he associated with Kenma were located in his physical home. Every day when he came home from work, he would step off of the bus and know that he was almost home. And that knowing would start to wash away whatever stresses and worries he had carried home that day until he walked into the apartment and Kenma looked up from his computer screen to greet him, and Kenma's quiet smile would wipe away any last persistent doubts.

The longer he was away, the stronger the feeling became. When he was forced to travel for business, the feeling of almost-home would start as soon as he landed back at the airport, and grow stronger until he finally set foot back inside the door.

It wasn't so much a question of their physical home though as of the person waiting for him inside it. When he would return from a trip while Kenma was away at a conference of his own, the apartment would feel dead and empty, and he would sleep restlessly for the days. When the time finally came for Kenma to return, he swore he could feel the almost-home feeling coming down the street toward him, a warm glow that grew stronger and stronger until finally bursting into its full strength when Kenma, exhausted from traveling and spending days around people with no breaks, opened the door. Those days, they usually fell asleep wrapped around one another on the couch not long afterwards, and woke up stiff the next morning, but refreshed after sleeping soundly for the first time in days.

It wasn't the place that mattered to Kuroo, but the person who was waiting for him there. No matter where they were, be it in their apartment, or in a hotel room halfway around the world the chance time they had conferences in the same place at the same time, it was always the last stretch of the journey to wherever Kenma was that gave him the feeling of almost-home.

And on the first day after they both retired, he realized that the feeling of almost-home no longer had to be a constant in his life unless he wanted it. They didn't have to, but with no more obligations placed on them by their respective jobs, there was nothing stopping them from spending as much time together as they wanted.

They celebrated their first day of retirement by going to the grocery store together, for no reason other than that they could, and then Kuroo made pancakes while Kenma played a game, and they spent the entire day sitting next to each other on the couch, reveling in the feeling of home that, for possibly the first time in their lives, was able to take up far more of their day than the amount of time they spent apart.

Iwaizumi is certain that he's dying.

There's no other explanation for it. The way his throat closes up, the way his heart pounds in his chest like it's trying to hammer its way out of him, the way he feels like he's burning up from the tips of his toes to the roots of his hair.

The worst part is, it's come out of nowhere. He can't think of a single reason to suddenly feel this way.

(He's lying. He can think of several; ten in Oikawa's fingers, as they brush against his arm in a gesture that has been familiar and unremarkable for so long but suddenly makes his heart take up residence in his throat; two in Oikawa's eyes and the way they crinkle as he smiles; one in that very smile itself, or maybe one for every time Oikawa's smiled, and Iwaizumi has never realised just how often Oikawa smiles at him until his breath started stuttering every time.)

He can't do this. He doesn't know how he's going to survive. He should just give up now and admit that his best friend is going to be the death of him. It's okay. He's learning to make his peace with it.

He can't think of a better way to go than to burn up under Oikawa's gaze, to disintegrate little by little at every casual touch. It's been happening more frequently these days and Iwaizumi is absolutely sure that one of these days, he's just going to forget how to breathe entirely. He's going to burst, because there's no way to hold all of these feelings inside himself.

Oikawa has always been bad with personal space but he's been forgetting it more often these days, taking a step closer to Iwaizumi and then another and another, until Iwaizumi's back is against the wall and Oikawa's expression is inscrutable, watching him for a moment before backing off. Iwaizumi is left with his heart racing, his palms sweating. He's never thought of himself as overly dramatic when he has Oikawa right there as a comparison but he's going to die.

(Except death doesn't happen like this: it doesn't happen with the press of Oikawa's palm against his as they walk home under a star filled sky, the shy sideway glances as their fingers curl against each other, the mumbled invitation to do homework in Iwaizumi's room. They kneel around the low table in Iwaizumi's room with the door shut, their breath trembling as much as their hands as they press their lips to each other for the first time, and this isn't death at all. It's so much more than that. It's just the beginning.)

“Tanba, we’re having a get-together this weekend, very casual, the team from our year,” Ryousuke says on the other end of the phone.

Tanba fiddles with the pen in his hand. He’d been expecting a call from his landlord, and had been ready with paper pad and pen. Vaguely, he worries about what would happen if the landlord calls while he’s already on the phone. A voicemail? Tanba hates checking his voicemail, but not as much as he hates talking to near-strangers on the phone.

“From our year?” he asks.

“Yeah, just us.” There’s a noticeable pause. “You’re too much of a hermit,” Ryousuke says, “when was the last time you spent time with friends?”

“I saw you just two weeks ago. And Jun and Tetsu… a few months ago.”

“See?” Ryousuke says, and there is something unfortunately delighted in his voice. “Who’s going to keep you from moping your life away? I’ll see you Saturday, seven in the evening, the usual place.”

Tanba’s landlord calls barely five minutes after they hang up.

--

The usual place is a small family-owned restaurant near the Seidou baseball field that they all used to frequent when they were on the team. Even now, Tanba goes once in a while with old teammates, and he suspects the others do so too, since the waitstaff always remember who they are, many years later. The same old CRT televisions are still perched up in the ceiling corners.

They’ve got a large table to themselves, and Tanba sits between Ryousuke and Jun, across from Masuko. Everyone orders what they usually order, and the familiar atmosphere is comfortable, enough so that Tanba doesn’t startle when Tetsu taps on his shoulder, leaning back and around from Jun’s other side..

“What have you been up to?” he asks. “We haven’t talked in a while.”

“Oh, not much,” Tanba says. He describes the latest developments at his desk job, which are not very interesting, the troubles with his apartment, which are frustrating, and the cute things his cat has done recently, which are far more charming. He’s reaching for his phone to show some pictures, and as he does so he turns so that he’s looking directly at the small fuzzy screen of the television set opposite him.

“What’s wrong?” Masuko asks. He looks up, following Tanba’s gaze, then has to twist in his seat to see the screen properly.

“Nothing,” Tanba says.

“Who’s that?” Ryousuke asks.

“I don’t know,” Tanba says. “Do you?” he asks back, curious.

“I’ll go ask them to raise the volume,” Jun says, getting up from his seat.

The place isn’t crowded, so once the volume’s raised, their group all fall silent to watch. The sports channel is playing a documentary on a baseball player from nearly sixty years ago, named Takigawa Chris Yuu.

The photos they show are black and white, and made even grainier by the quality of the screen, but even so Tanba can tell he has a nice smile and kind eyes. And he’d been a catcher-- the kind of player Tanba would have been closest to.

Why there’s a documentary about such a small-time player comes clear soon enough; he’s passed away recently of old age, peacefully enough, and in his death he’s come back to media attention, one of the earlier Japanese-American players in an American league and all the troubles that came with that.

The rest of the table stops paying attention soon enough, splitting back up into their conversations, but Tanba keeps watching. There’s a photo of Chris on the home plate, a look of determination in the lines of his body, in the cast of his hat’s shadow. Tanba’s heart speeds up, almost like he’s at the game himself, in the dusty heat obvious from the photo, hoping for a home run. There’s a cresting of emotion within him, without the the resolution of a swing, and Tanba feels a prickle of tears at the confusion. When he looks down, he sees his hands are clenched into fists, and with effort he spreads his fingers back out, presses them against this knees.

The documentary ends, and volume’s brought back down, the channel switched. Tanba shakes his head.

“Excuse me,” he says to the table, “just need some fresh air.”

Ryousuke gives him a glance out of the corner of his eyes, and moves his seat so Tanba can get past.

Once outside, Tanba takes a deep breath of cool autumn air and calms himself down.

What luck, he thinks.
