Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Bonus Round 4: Quotes

A shipping olympics favorite, this round uses quotes of all sorts to fuel your creative endeavors.

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on July 21 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

I have no idea what I just wrote. Whoops.

Takumi found himself a lost cause before he even knew what was happening to him. This wasn’t what he expected or what he thought he would ever want. One moment he found himself wanting to defeat Yukihira Soma in the classroom and bring the newbie down a few pegs; however Soma’s cooking skills took him by complete surprise. He hadn’t expected anything from this transfer student, but all it took was one class; one chance to witness Soma’s ability and charisma with his cooking at Takumi found himself falling apart.

At first Takumi assumed that he was just in shock over his cooking skills, but deep down he knew it wasn’t just the food that drew him to Soma. He had a charm that was integrated into his very being and everyone found themselves drawn to him either for his cooking, personality or both. Yukihira Soma had completely entrenched himself in Takumi’s mind and thoughts. Takumi considered himself to be a very calm and collected individual, but Soma was somehow able to reduce him to a blushing mess, with just a greeting and a smile. His heat rate would speed up and he would try his best not to stutter so the other students would remain unaware of the effect that Soma had on him.

“This isn’t normal. Hide these feelings. Hide them. No one can know. No one. Especially not him.”

Takumi repeated these words to himself almost as if the repetition would make his feelings any less true and make life easier. He tried to mask his embarrassment and cover up his feelings by shouting at Soma, but multiple people could see through him and knew that Takumi did not feel anger or dislike towards the other chef.

Soma happened to be one of those people and he simply smiled and laughed whenever Takumi made his flustered shouts. Takumi knew that his hidden crush hadn’t been exposed and that Soma just assumed that they both saw each other as friendly rivals. That in itself was enough to cause him even more pain.

“That’s all I am to him. Nothing more.”

Takumi wanted to learn more about his life. He wanted to have a relationship that extended beyond just talking in class. Even if his feelings were never reciprocated (and Takumi was positive that they never would be although he kept a sliver of hope in his heart) he still wanted to be able to get closer with Soma as actual friends.

One day after class, Takumi decided to make his first move. He walked up to Soma and tapped him on the shoulder right before he was able to exit the classroom with Megumi. Takumi took a deep breath and then spoke.

“Yukihira, I was planning to use the afternoon to go shopping as preparation for the Autumn Elections and was wondering if you wanted to go with me. It would be great to

Takumi looked up to find Soma scratching the back of his head. “Oh man. I’m sorry Takumi!” He felt his stomach drop after hearing that first sentence. “Tadokoro and I already did our shopping yesterday and were planning to do some recipe testing this evening in the Polar Star dorm. If you asked yesterday, you could have come with the two of us. Sorry about that.”

“Don’t worry about it Yukihira. All this means is that you now won’t have the pleasure to see the ingredients I plan to use,” Takumi said while trying his best to hide his disappointment with a forced smile. “Well I’m off to go shopping now.” Takumi knew that his last statement was a lie. He certainly wasn’t in the right state of mind to prepare a recipe for one of the most important dishes in his high school career, but Soma didn’t know that. He just had to get out of school as soon as possible before

He walked past the two other students and began to make his way to his room, but heard a soft whisper in his ear.

“You’ll be fine. The pain will hopefully dull over time.”

He quickly turned around just in time to see Megumi’s face as she gave him a sad smile before making her way down the opposite side of the hall towards Soma.

What.

Takumi assumed his brother was the only one who could figure out his true feelings for Soma. The two of them had a connection that extended through all aspects of their lives so that was no surprise. But Tadokoro Megumi was another story entirely. The two of them rarely spoke and only when Soma was leading a group conversation. So how was she able to see straight through Takumi’s hidden feelings?

Takumi spent the next couple of days trying to talk with Megumi. This turned out to be much more difficult that he expected. He assumed that because she was relatively soft spoken it would be easy to strike up a conversation and get her to a secluded area so they could talk in private. In reality, she was almost always surrounded by members of her dorm which usually included Soma.

By the end of the second day, Takumi was ready to give up and not talk to anyone about his emotions. Holding them in was not the best course of action, but he honestly couldn’t think of anything else. But then while walking through the hall towards one of the side exists he heard a faint mumbling sound from one of the empty classrooms. He peeked in out of curiosity and found Megumi on the floor, knees pulled to her chest, eyes red, and tears streaming down her face.

“Tadokoro?” he asked a bit in shock at the situation.

She looked up and upon seeing his face looking down at her immediately began to wipe her eyes as if doing so would somehow erase the fact that she had been crying just a moment earlier.

“T-Takumi!” Megumi exclaimed while trying to make herself look presentable. “This is so embarrassing. I can’t believe you found me looking like a mess. Please don’t tell anyone I was crying. I can’t have the rest of them asking me questions. Especially not Soma. You out of all people should know that. Right?”

“But Yukihira is one of your closest friends here. Why wouldn’t you want his help with thi-” Takumi stopped speaking mid-sentence as all of his thoughts from the past couple of days came together to form a single truth.

Tadokoro Megumi understood his feelings because she carried them as well.

“I take it you understand now?” she asked smilingly softly. “Everyone around Soma is easily drawn into him because of his charm. I was drawn in by his kindness and his faith in my cooking. Because of that I’ve always loved having opportunities to cook alongside him in my dorm. I wanted to be able to grow alongside him, but then I started thinking about how many people are going to be drawn to him and I was upset. At first I didn’t know why. I thought it was because I’d lose my friend and cooking partner, but now I know it’s more than that. Same with you right?” Megumi asked looking over at Takumi who was stunned at her confession.

“Takumi. Don’t feel ashamed for having these emotions. It’s ok. I understand and I’m here for you. Could you do me one favor” she asked scooting a little bit away from the door. “Please sit with me for a moment. If we cry together maybe it won’t hurt as much.” She said the last part with a little bit of a laugh, but Takumi could tell the intensity of the sadness that laid behind those words.

Takumi sat down next to Megumi on the floor and closed his eyes. Thinking about what she had just told him, he slowly opened the locks he had placed on his heart and allowed his feelings to slowly course throughout his body. It hurt, but Megumi served as a calming presence for him as he allowed a few tears to come out of his eyes. The first tears he had ever cried over Yukihira Soma.

Aya’s coming back from work one day when she sees a girl-- no, a woman, an adult just like herself, she really has to start getting used to that-- slip into an alleyway. Something makes Aya linger nearby instead of continuing on her way, and in a few moments she’s rewarded, for some definition of a reward.

The woman comes out of the alleyway, helping along a limping man. Aya averts her gaze from the obvious wound on his leg, and instead catches the woman’s gaze.

“Don’t be so obvious, Imaizumi-kun,” she says, while giving Aya a sharp, bright smile, “you’re making strangers look.”

The man ignores her teasing, manages to grit out, “I’d said let’s go the other way, didn’t I? It’s too public here.”

“You’re the boss,” she says, but she’s still watching Aya, and gives her a sardonic salute before turning back into the alleyway.

Aya comes back home to a darkened apartment that feels too small and messy. She spends an hour listlessly cleaning her room before remembering dinner, which is a sad instant affair. At night, she goes to bed with a strange hope within her, of seeing the stranger again, and it eases her way to sleep.

--

The next day Aya very nearly considers waiting by the alleyway for more mysterious and beautiful women to appear. Instead she continues on her way home, feeling embarrassed.

--

Aya’s taking her afternoon break at a nearby coffeeshop, sorting through her list of things to do for work, when there’s a sharp tap on her table. She looks up and sees the woman from the alleyway. She’d given up hope before she even really had it, and now here she is like a dream, right in front of her, and what is she going to do?

“Is this seat taken?”

Aya looks around at the empty tables around her. “Of course not,” she says, moving her papers around and trying not to appear too flustered. “Please, go ahead.”

“We haven’t introduced ourselves,” the woman says, placing her coffee on the table and slipping into her seat. Despite what she’d said she stays silent, waiting for Aya to make the first offering.

“Tachibana Aya,” Aya says, amazed that she remembers her own name. “It’s nice to meet you.”

“Kanzaki Miki, and likewise, Tachibana-san.” Miki smiles. “You’re hard to catch, you know that?”

Aya blinks in surprise. “What do you mean?”

“Well, we had quite the encounter last week, didn’t we?”

Aya ducks her head down. “I suppose,” she says. How embarrassing would it be to say, ‘I didn’t realize you felt the same way!’? Probably very.

“Yes,” Miki says, and Aya nearly startles at the reply before she remembers her inside thoughts tend to stay inside. “You saw my friend in quite a predicament!”

Aya gives her a blank look.

“My friend,” Miki says. “Imaizumi-kun, he had been… shot,” she adds delicately.

“Oh! Yes, he had been,” Aya says, though in truth, she’s only seen bullet wounds on TV, so she hadn’t actually been sure of that. “He’s doing alright?”

Miki waves her hand. “No problem there. I’m a little more worried about you.”

“Oh?”

Miki breaks into a warm, genuine smile. “Well, rather, I had been worried about you. Talking, you know? But a week’s past and not a peep out of you! That’s what made it harder to find you, I guess, but now that I have, I don’t think you’ll be any trouble, will you?”

“Oh no,” Aya says, shaking her head, only dimly aware of what kind of trouble she may have been. Is this gang stuff? It feels like gang stuff.

Miki puts her elbow on the table, leans her cheek against her hand. “Would you mind terribly if I call you Aya-chan? I think it suits you.”

Aya can feel the incredible heat coming off her face. “Excuse-me!” she says, trying to save some dignity. Then she realizes she has nothing else to say about it. “Sure,” she mumbles. “Miki,” she tacks on, a little victory.

Miki laughs in delight. “Aya-chan,” she whispers, leaning across the table, a wicked glint in her eye. “I think I can teach you a lot of things you’d be interested in. Run away with me, okay?”

The day his country surrendered, Sousuke's squad kept fighting. They weren't overenthusiastic patriots, weren't caught up in an unstoppable fervor of battle: their communications officer had been shot in the head, right through the ear, and somehow no one had taken over for him. So they kept fighting, not for honor or valor or victory; they kept fighting because... they just kept fighting, no because, no rhyme or reason.

Sometimes, Sousuke thinks, staring out the window at an ocean he's become all too familiar with but can't think of as home; sometimes Sousuke thinks that's why they were fighting all along.

In any case that's why they fought that day. Whether the other side knew his country has surrendered, Sousuke neither knows nor cares to find out. That knowledge won't change anything, won't bring back his arm.

He touches his shoulder without looking at it, gaze fixed on the all too familiar ocean. It doesn't hurt. He was unconscious for the pain, knocked out by the projectile that took off his arm, kept under by drugs administered on the spot when he was found alive. The other side's doctors, when he was brought here still out, gave him an implant that blocks the pain. So he's been told. In any case, he doesn't feel any physical pain from his shoulder or his phantom limb.

He never got to say goodbye to it, his arm.

He stops touching his shoulder, looks at the ocean, doesn't wish to cross it. Doesn't wish to go home. He's told them that enough times that they've stopped offering, stopped asking. He doesn't have a home anymore and they must know that because none of the doctors and officials who have visited him here have asked him why.

The priest did, once. Only once. Sousuke didn't answer him either, not with words anyhow, but the priest must have read something in his expression or body language because he had closed his eyes and bowed his head and never brought it up again.

He's not actually a priest—the religion here uses different titles and honorifics, but the not-priest said Sousuke could call him that if it was easier for him. Sousuke doesn't call him that because it's easier but he doesn't tell the priest he does it for a strange kind of amusement that even he himself is not sure he finds funny.

The priest is the only one who still visits him regularly. Even his doctors are different, now that they've moved him here from the main hospital. There are other veterans here, from both sides; it seems Sousuke is not the only one who doesn't care to go back to the country that sent him here.

The priest still comes to see him here and the last time he did Sousuke asked him why. He thought "why" and "because" had stopped meaning anything, but he'd heard himself asking, caught himself looking into the priest's eyes for the answer.

The priest had looked back at him with those clear green eyes of his, dazzling as the waters of the lake Sousuke grew up next to, just as calm. The priest had looked at him with that clear, dazzling, calm gaze of his and had asked if there was an answer that would satisfy Sousuke.

"I don't know," Sousuke had heard himself say.

The priest had nodded, then bowed his head. Sousuke thought maybe he was praying but then the priest said, "My order believes in the comfort of all living souls. If my visits do not bring you comfort, or if—if you do not wish for comfort, I shall discontinue."

The hesitation stayed with Sousuke long after the priest left that day, with the promise of another visit another day. He didn't know what to make of that hesitation but he found himself dwelling in it, living in the breath between words, the space between breaths...

Sousuke takes a breath and turns from the window as the priest, after knocking, enters the room.

"I've been thinking about what you said," Sousuke says before the priest can say anything. He gazes into the green so like the only place he's ever truly thought of as home, gazes into the green gazing back at him, holds himself steady. "About your purpose."

He feels his own hesitation, draws breath around it. "And my wishes."

They looks at one another.

"I wish for your visits," Sousuke says, "but I don't wish for comfort."

When the priest fails to break the gaze, Sousuke does it, getting out of bed and going to the window. He looks out, not at the ocean, not at anything; he closes his eyes. He doesn't think about his words, he lets them out like breath: "I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want sin."

And then he is breathing only breath.

He breathes for some moments at the window.

He hears movement. The door shutting.

He turns around—

The priest is standing naked in the middle of the room. "I want that, too." He smiles, as calm and dazzling as his gaze. "I want all of that, Sousuke."

When their lips meet, in the breath between words, the space between breaths, something stirs inside Sousuke, as if luminous green has got inside him, taken root, and begun to grow new life.

welcome to new york --> bad blood

--

“I came to take this back, Oikawa-san.”

Kageyama’s voice is stubborn; the set of her mouth, absolute. A heavy metal briefcase is clutched in her hands, and every tremor that would normally stutter Kageyama’s voice is instead in the slight shaking of her wrists, the nervous sweep of her glossy pin-straight ponytail, the way she can’t quite look Oikawa in the eye. There’s wrinkles pulling up Kageyama’s tight black skirt, there’s runs in her thin black stockings, and she’s wearing a trenchcoat against the rain falling heavy against the skyscraper glass; but it does nothing to cover her heartbeat so loud in the dim flickering of fluorescent lights, and Oikawa is known to never miss a thing.

“I can read you like a magazine, Tobio-chan,” Oikawa says, and the slide of her small smile is as sharp as the flex of her hands, fingers poised ready at her side. Her face is half shadows and all Kageyama can see is the bright red of her perfect lipstick mouth; Kageyama has never seen it smeared, even in the training ring, in the dirt of the field, against the white cotton cast of old hotel sheets and sweat and spit sticking to the line of Kageyama’s thighs. “It's been a while since I’ve heard from you, and now here you are… my adorable Tobio-chan, back from the dead to cause me more trouble.”

“You left me there,” Kageyama scowls and her eyes flick down; Oikawa does not miss that either.

Only because I always knew you were going to catch up, Oikawa thinks, but instead: “The mistake you always make is that you only watch my hands.”

And Oikawa arcs them high, and she almost laughs at the gullible way Kageyama automatically tracks them; it leaves her unbalanced, weight at the back of her feet for one clumsy moment, and it’s familiar, it’s so familiar, and Kageyama knows it all too well, the blue of her eyes wide as Oikawa presses in against Kageyama’s long unsteady legs, kicks the full of her weight into the soft muscle of Kageyama’s thighs.

(Oikawa has always been tall; with stiletto heels, she absolutely towers, and her heels are always, always metal sharp.)

(Kageyama’s skin is a map of light-coloured scars, a stitch for every lesson she ever had to learn.)

“All you had to do was stay,” Oikawa says, almost too softly. Some might think she was smiling, if they knew nothing at all.

The rain drums against the window behind Kageyama like a too fast heartbeat, like bullets striking in the distance, like the crack of glass; and when the glass shatters under Kageyama’s weight, it too, sounds like the rain hitting the concrete several stories below.

Oikawa forgets how fast Kageyama is on her feet, sometimes.

She feels the cold of the metal suitcase against her side, she feels the terror grip of Kageyama’s arms pulling her along by the hips, and Oikawa is not sure if it’s adrenaline or heartache or the delirious feeling of being too alive in this moment, that knocks the breath from her mouth, and then she feels the flying glass against her face, too. Headlights pass the window pane from too close, and Oikawa lets herself close her eyes as she feels the rush of cold air, the rain like knives against her skin, the way Kageyama trembles as Oikawa wraps her arms around her, mid-flight.

They don’t hit concrete; they hit a canopy of steel and glass instead, and Oikawa almost sighs in exasperation as she feels Kageyama reach for her hand as they lie there, waiting for the bleeding to stop.
