Bonus Round 5: Myth & Lore

Summer's a time for swapping stories around the campfire. With that in mind, this round draws inspiration from the stories humanity have told each other over the centuries.

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on August 4 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

RULES

This round does not have prompts. Instead, we ask you to draw inspiration from the wide pool of mythology, fantasy, folklore, and fable. An urban fantasy or supernatural AU? A re-imagining of your favorite folk tale? Characters swapping ghost stories or playing D&D? As long as your fill in some way incorporates the fantastical and/or supernatural, it's welcome here.
Your fill still has to be about a ship from one of our nominated fandoms. What ships you create work for is up to you, though.
To submit your fill, simply leave it as a comment as a reply to this post.

Hitoka is pretty sure she doesn't deserve this. Probably.

The underworld is about as dark and creepy as she had expected it to be, frankly. It’s full of branching tunnels that make her nervous just to look at, not to mention the wailing souls of the damned that populate the lower levels, sending wailing echoes throughout the caves that make her skin crawl. The path she had been pointed down is well-lit, at least, with flickering lanterns at regular intervals casting a bright, if ghostly, light throughout the corridor.

Kei has been bored for a very long time. He isn’t the most inspiring of gods, he supposes—strategy and defense aren't terribly interesting concepts to most people in a land where peace has reigned for nearly three centuries, especially when there are patron deities of more concrete things like the sun and the hunt to worship. It only makes sense that his cult has dwindled severely in membership, that most of his temples have become dusty and overgrown and his offering dishes have been left empty for decades. Kei is, of course, nothing if not logical, so he accepts this turn of events with as much grace as he can summon, negligible as that amount may be.

It means, though, that he notices immediately when someone leaves an offering for him. It’s at one of his eastern temples—it’s tucked away in a forest at the outskirts of a major city, and it’s one of the larger ones, so it hasn't completely crumbled or been overtaken by nature the way most of them have. He doesn't have many followers left in this area, just a handful of old men and women perfunctorily carrying on the tradition left to them by their own elders, but it seems that some curious individual must have found him again somehow.

"You must be careful when you go out into the Mawr dear," her mother always said, plucking out eschew twigs and leaves that stuck in her hair. "The forest spirits are waiting out there with their song, ready in the dead of night to draw you in and eat your little heart. The ones of maidens are their favorites, I'm sure they'll gladly take you in, gobble you up, and make you one of their own."

"Pssssh, I'm not afraid of no spirits or their silly songs." Bokuto would always reply, shaking her head.

Her mother would sigh, that tired look heavy in her eyes. "No, I suppose you aren't."

Bokuto doesn't understand that look, or her mother's worry.

Besides, she thinks, maybe it would be better if she got lost in the Mawr, never to return or be seen again, and become one of the forest spirits. No one speaks to her or her mother, avoiding them as if they were cursed, and Bokuto can't help but wonder if it's her fault. Mother never done anything wrong after all. She was always the mischievous one the others would yell at, the one they would scorn and shake their heads at.

She starts sneaking out to the Mawr more often at night than going during the day. She starts listening for their song, trying to remember the lyrics from the elders.

"Good night, good night, uh, sweet dreams descend on, no, shucks, that's not right..." Bokuto sighs. So much for luring them out with their own tune.

The sun had long since set, the fireflies disappearing to the trees as she keeps walking through the wood. There had to be something out here, something to find before she turned tail back home. Her mother might be worried, but it's okay. Her mother wouldn't miss her too badly.

Good night, Good night, Time sends it's warning call, sweet dreams descend on all...

Bokuto whirls at the mesmerizing voice in the song. It starts as just one, but it sounds like hundreds, echoing through the tree branchs to her ears. In a way, it's oddly soothing. Four repeated lines in such a beautiful, light tune, far better than anything she had heard from any elder. She keeps walking, deeper and deeper, until there's nothing but one soft like and a pair of eyes looking back at her.

"Time, Time sends it's warning call."

"Who... who are you?"

The mysterious woman blinks. "Were you not the one looking for us?"

Bokuto knows what this means. What will happen to her.

And Bokuto nods anyway.

She blows out the candle.

( Everything changes in the darkness. )

I love the whole premise/world you built here, but I think my favorite exchange is probably Tezuka's completely nonchalant/deadpan reveal of his own magical powers.

Such a lovely fic for my favorite OT3. Thanks for writing! Am I the only person who immediately thought of Kuroko when they described the ghost?
