Bonus Round 2: Tic-Tac-Toe

Tic-Tac-Toe

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Get three in a row! That's the goal of this bonus round. Inspired by a fanwork event type called kink bingo, this round encourages you to create and fill out themed prompt cards.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. There's a lot of text here, but if you read carefully and follow the instructions step by step, you will be okay.

RULES
Please refer to the first comment thread of this post for an example of how this round works.

PROMPTING

  1. Select a ship to create your prompt card about. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Haruki & Kazuma). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Haruki/Kazuma). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!

  2. Visit this card generator.
    • Here is a visual guide to using it.
    • The large text box is where you can list prompts if you have your own ideas. Please list at least 9 prompts; you can list more if you want. (The generator says you need at least 24, but it's lying.) Single words or short phrases are better than sentences.
    • Otherwise, you can use the dropdown menu found right below it. Note: some of these prompts lists are NSFW. (NSFW prompts are a-ok as long as you tag for it.) If you don't like some of the options that appear in a prompt list, you can delete them.
    • Text prompts only, please. Also, each card square must be unique—don't list the same prompt 9 times.
    • In "Configuration Options," make sure you select 3x3 and (Normal prompt). This is the most important step!
    • Leave the tic-tac-toe card with its default colors, so everyone can read it clearly.
    • Click the "Create a bingo card" button.
    • Scroll down to see the card that was created for you. If you don't like the prompts it picked, you can reroll by clicking "Create a bingo card" again.
    • When you're satisfied, scroll further down the page until you see a textarea box full of HTML.
  3. Copy and paste the HTML from the box and into the body of your prompt comment, then post!

FILLING

Fill prompts by selecting an individual square to create fanwork for, then leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work. (Optional:) If you can fill three squares from a prompt in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line, you get a tic-tac-toe (and an additional point bonus)! You can also just fill prompts as you please and get standard points.
  • Prompt squares are labeled as follows:
    A1 B1 C1
    A2 B2 C2
    A3 B3 C3
  • If you're trying for tic-tac-toe, you cannot combine squares into one fill. If your fill can satisfy multiple squares, pick the most relevant square: e.g., one square is sailing and another is pirates and you make a fill about pirates sailing, it's mostly pirates so put down the pirates square.
  • Each fill must stand alone as an individual piece, but all your fills can slot into a larger universe if you'd like.
  • You cannot fill a prompt square more than once, but you can fill every square on a tic tac toe card if you want to.
  • You cannot work with your teammates to get a tic-tac-toe. Only individually achieved tic-tac-toes get the bonus.
  • Multiple people can fill the same prompt square. You cannot "block" others from getting tic-tac-toe.
  • Remember to also follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

For prompts: 5 points for each tic-tac-toe card (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each
Tic-tac-toe Bonus: 2 points each for the first 12 achieved by your team

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

ahhh i got a lil carried away and did...a stardust au...i hope...you've seen/read it before, otherwise im sorry orz

***

“You can’t hear or feel me, right?” Tatsuya says, waving a hand in front of the man. He considers plucking out one of his too-thick eyebrows for a moment, but refrains—there’s a limit to the risks he wants to take today, after all. “Hello?”

No response. He watches Hanamiya leave for the front of the caravan, completely undisturbed by the presence of another unwanted person in the room. Oh.

An inquisitive chirp next to him alerts Tatsuya to the fact that he is, in fact, still a tangible being. He smiles briefly at the multicolored finch upon its perch near the entrance, one of its feet chained to the wood. It hops close and tilts its head, as if inspecting him, then returns to its sleep with its head under a wing.

If Hanamiya’s blindness to him had been the work of some curse, at least it was working in his favor for now. Tatsuya turns back to the cage and its occupant, who is staring up at him with mournful eyes.

He pats the cage. “You’ve gotten yourself into quite a predicament, haven’t you?”

The duck quacks at him once, then falls silent.

-

Even if Hanamiya keeps his word, they’re still weeks away from the fairgrounds. As lonely as it is down here without anyone to talk to, there’s some solace in Tatsuya feeling his body mending with the passing days. The caravan is not a pleasant place to stay, for humans or fae or stars, but he will have to make do with the rattling vials of poison inside the cupboards and the strange smells emanating from the locked trunk under the bed.

(There are times Tatsuya wonders what would happen were he to open it, perhaps find a way to free Shuu of the curse sooner, but there is no telling if his invisibility extends so far to something such as this.)

He can’t tell if Shuu could actually understand his words, or if the sounds he makes are attempts at coherent responses (it’s sort of cute, Tatsuya admits, the way he seems to quack indignantly whenever he is lifted none too gently out of the cage at night.) Perhaps it does not matter—perhaps he won’t even remember any of this, once they get to the fair.

While the night reigns he would climb up to the top of the caravan with Shuu, who even with wings still seems wary of heights, and they would look up together at the night sky dotted with lights.

(It is not the same, sitting atop a dusty caravan looking up at the stars when he belongs among them, but if Tatsuya closes his eyes he can picture himself there again, looking down at the world, dazzling and whole.)

And then Shuu would rest his head on Tatsuya’s chest and he would be brought back, to the soft white feathers in his arms and low snores coming from inside the caravan. He wants to be touching hair and skin, not feathers or bills—he thinks about Shuu’s dark hair and sharp gaze, the way his face had flushed in embarrassment as he’d touched Tatsuya’s legs while making the splinter, the way he smiles with that odd upturn of the lip when he thinks Tatsuya isn’t looking…

He also thinks about what Shuu wants him for, what he tries to say but cannot bear to, unlike Tatsuya who buries it deep inside because he does not want to see the truth. About his father beyond the Wall, the illness, the cure found in a star’s blood.

The duck is quiet when Tatsuya returns him to the cage come morning, its only quarrel with Tatsuya being a nip on the fingers when he slides a stalk of celery inside. On the perch, the finch pecks in his general direction as he passes; Tatsuya pats it, fascinated by the iridescence of its feathers in the morning sunlight. There’s something to be said about the senses of animals in Faerie, but if Shuu knows anything about what Tatsuya had been thinking, he isn’t giving anything up.

And so maybe, for just a little while longer, Tatsuya can play pretend.

Square: your very first kiss
Word Count: 485

***

The first time they kiss, it's in a basketball court.

Kagami thinks that it's only right for it to be here. He's nervous about this entire thing, but perhaps the familiarity of the asphalt beneath their feet will be enough to ground him, perhaps it'll feel natural to do this here with Kuroko, his constant partner on every court, in every game.

He thinks that it'll be enough, but standing here on the street ball court on their way home from Maji Burger, he feels his courage fleeing. His hands are trembling, he realises, and Kuroko can probably tell that he's nervous about this. That is, if Kuroko isn't wondering why they're both just standing there, facing each other, without saying a word.

Luckily for him, Kuroko knows him better than that. He clears his throat quietly, then looks up to meet Kagami's eyes. "You've never done this before."

Kagami swallows hard, taking half a step back. "…You have?"

It makes sense, he thinks, with sinking dread. Kuroko was close to his old teammates. He's probably kissed Aomine. Or Kise. Or maybe all of them, and he's going to be comparing Kagami to every single one of them now and when it comes to basketball, Kagami is pretty comfortable to challenge them. He doesn't know the first thing about kissing.

"Kagami-kun," Kuroko interrupts gently. He reaches out, fingers skimming across the back of Kagami's hand. They're shaking as well, Kagami realises with surprise. "This is my first kiss too."

Suddenly, it feels like Kagami can breathe again. He inhales, exhales, and takes that half step forward again, then another, until they're too close for him to back out now.

"Can I?" he asks anyway, because just like everything else that they do together, this is something they need to be on the same page about. They need to understand each other, trust each other, be able to know what the other is going to do.

Kuroko smiles at him, and nods in reply.

When Kagami leans in, the first thing he can taste is the vanilla milkshake on Kuroko's lips. It's sweet, inviting, and he presses another kiss to them, chasing the taste of it. Now that he's started, he doesn't want to stop, and it feels strange that he was so nervous about his first kiss, when he gives his second, third, fourth, and the rest of the kisses so easily, without hesitation. Kuroko takes them all gladly, returning them in kind, until they're holding onto each other, their kisses growing deeper, lingering now, until they finally pull apart.

"That's… not how I imagined it going," Kagami says, with a quiet laugh. "Sorry. I got carried away."

"It's exactly how I expected it to go," Kuroko replies, and there's a warm kind of fondness in his eyes as he finds Kagami's hand with his, linking their fingers together. "I don't mind at all."

Square: your favourite worn sweater
Word Count: 470

***

The sweater Kuroko is given to keep him warm is grey and soft, the way that material is when it's old and loved. Kuroko looks down at it, the sleeves hanging down past where his hands end, the hem of it going down to just over his knees. It feels like a warm hug, he thinks to himself. It feels like Kagami.

He wonders if Kagami thinks that he doesn't remember all the times he's come over, to find Kagami wearing this exact same sweater. Even without all the care put into maintaining something so old and comfortable, Kuroko knows that it's Kagami's favourite. He thinks about that, as he pulls the sleeves back enough that he can use his hands. He holds onto a handful of the material, and considers the fact that Kagami wanting him to wear his favourite sweater must mean something important.

There are no answers to be found in Kagami's bedroom, when he's out in the kitchen, working on a quick dinner for them both. Kuroko walks out of the room, going back to join Kagami. He notices that Nigou has also been given a soft blanket to lie on, folded up and placed against the wall while Kuroko was changing. It makes him smile, imagining the way Kagami must have so very carefully called the dog over to lie on top of it without getting too close.

"You seem happy," Kagami says, without even looking up at him. He finishes stirring the pasta he's making and then puts the spoon aside. He looks up at Kuroko, and suddenly goes still.

"So do you," Kuroko replies, watching as Kagami takes him in. There's something warm in his eyes, pleased and approving. Kuroko lifts his arms, indicating his folded sleeves. "Your arms are too long."

"Your arms are too short," Kagami mutters, but there's no heat to his words. He still seems distracted, and he's not looking into Kuroko's eyes as much as just looking him up and down. "You look warm, though."

"I am," Kuroko nods. "Thank you. I didn't want to wear my school jersey."

"It's fine," Kagami says softly. "You… look good in that. You should keep it."

"Do you want me to?" Kuroko asks, and he feels as if the conversation that they're having is different to the one that they want to have.

"I like seeing you in that sweater," Kagami says as casually as he can manage, which is not at all. "I wouldn't mind seeing you in it more often."

It finally makes sense to Kuroko and he hums softly. "How about this. You keep the sweater here, and I'll wear it when I come over."

"And maybe you can visit more often," Kagami adds. "Maybe you can stay for longer."

"Yeah," Kuroko agrees. "I'd like to do that."

Square: the spare key to your place
Word Count: 447

***

They're walking together in comfortable silence, the way that they usually do, Kuroko observing the people they walk past, when Kagami clears his throat. Kuroko lets his gaze slide off the strangers he's cataloguing, letting Kagami come back into focus. He's always so bright to Kuroko, difficult to ignore but always so easy to start paying attention to once again.

"Kagami-kun?" he asks, slowing down and prompting Kagami to do the same, until they're standing on the corner of the street, turned to each other.

"Not here," Kagami decides, and picks up his pace again, keeping his strides short enough that Kuroko can match them. Kuroko wonders if he's doing it on purpose, or if it's something he just does out of habit these days, but he doesn't have much time to dwell on it because Kagami looks around and then says, "That park over there."

Kuroko follows patiently, crossing the street with Kagami and letting him lead the way over to one of the benches under a large tree. The park is empty, the weather getting cold enough that the local children are playing indoors instead. Kagami stops by the bench but doesn't sit down. Instead, he turns around to face Kuroko and pulls something out of his pocket.

"Here," he finally says, not quite meeting Kuroko's eyes. "I just wanted to give you this."

Kuroko feels something small and cold being pressed into his hand and he looks down, realising that it's a key. He lets it sit in the middle of his palm for a moment, blinking down at it, until Kagami gets too impatient to just let them stand in silence.

"Say something, Kuroko." He sounds distressed. Or maybe it's just that he's embarrassed. Kuroko can't entirely tell.

"You're always home when I come over to your place," Kuroko says because it's the first thing that comes to mind. "You usually let me in."

"I know that," Kagami replies. "But I just wanted to let you know that you're welcome to come over whenever you want. It's not just that you're welcome but you're… I don't know. Invited? You can show up without having to tell me. Show up whenever. All the time, if you want."

"Is that what you want?" Kuroko asks, looking up at Kagami. He sees the way Kagami's blush starts at his ears and neck and then travels its way across his face too.

"Maybe," Kagami allows. He finally looks at Kuroko, giving him an shy smile. "Anyway. That's yours. Use it whenever you want."

"Thank you," Kuroko replies, and means it. He pulls his keyring out of his pocket and adds Kagami's key onto it. "I will."

Square: a plane ticket across the pacific
Word Count: 487

***

"I miss you," Kagami says over the phone, and he might be miles and miles away, but for the moment he sounds like he's right beside Kuroko, and that's the worst part of it all; the fact that he's there, and not here. "I thought I knew how hard this was going to be, but…"

Kuroko lets him trail off, echoing Kagami's sigh with one of his own. He understands exactly how Kagami feels because he's been wrestling with it too. It doesn't matter how many years it's been since Kagami went back to America, the distance between them always feels too vast. Kuroko's heart always feels too lonely without Kagami there by his side.

They've visited each other since, but it's never felt like long enough and being together for a while only makes Kuroko miss him more when they're apart again.

It's been close to a year since the last time they've been together and Kuroko can feel Kagami's absence almost like a physical pain. It aches, in his chest, in his stomach, but Kagami is still not the type of person to ask Kuroko to come over to visit him. Even now, when they both stay up too late, or wake up too early, just to have the chance to talk to each other, Kagami is still wary about overstepping whatever invisible boundary he's set for himself, not wanting to interfere with Kuroko's life from a distance, as if he doesn't realise that the distance between them is making enough of an impact on Kuroko's life as it is.

It doesn't matter, though. Kuroko knows how to take matters into his own hands now, and he's confident enough that he knows what they both want, what they both need, and how to do exactly that.

He's sitting in the departures lounge, too early to walk over to his gate just yet, when he snaps a photo of himself with his boarding pass, and texts it to Kagami. With the timezone difference, Kagami should just be getting out of his afternoon training session with Alex. His phone vibrates immediately, as expected, but it's not a text. Kagami is calling him.

"Kuroko?" his voice is shaking. "I didn't even stop for long enough to read your boarding pass. Are you—?"

"It takes a long time to fly to America," Kuroko replies, not even trying to keep the smile off his face. "I brought lots of books to read on the plane."

"You're serious," Kagami realises. "You're actually—you're coming here. Here."

"Maybe I'll go to New York," Kuroko replies. "I heard it's a nice place, but I haven't seen it yet."

"Tetsuya," Kagami laughs, and those might be tears in his voice, or it might be laughter. Maybe it's both, the way it is for Kuroko right now. He wipes at the corners of his eyes, laughing softly into his phone.

"I'll see you soon, Taiga."

Square: a tiny succulent plant
Word Count: 472

***

When Kagami first moves into his new apartment, he's greeted with a small succulent on his doorstep. He has no idea what it is, but the pot it comes in is wrapped in a light blue ribbon and there's a tag attached that simply reads, welcome —KT.

Kagami picks it up as he unlocks the door, walking inside and finding the sunniest windowsill and placing it there. The green and purple leaves are a nice burst of colour in his sparsely furnished apartment and Kagami nods to himself, not knowing who the mysterious KT might be, but feeling thankful for their generosity all the same.

In a week, the succulent looks happy in its new home. It happily soaks up the sun and grows a little bigger. The blue ribbon wrapped around the pot is beginning to fade from constant exposure to the sun though, and Kagami unties it so he can throw it out. He hasn't met KT yet, even though he's tried keeping an eye out for who it might possibly be when he passes the other tenants of the apartment block in his way in and out. None of them look like they recognise him, or have any interest in him at all beyond the barest nods of acknowledgement as they walk past each other. Certainly not the type of people who would welcome him to the building with a plant on his doorstep.

It's very mysterious, he thinks to himself, not entirely sure what to make of this situation.

A month in, Kagami is beginning to suspect that KT might be a ghost. In the four weeks since he's moved in, Kagami has come home to find more gifts sitting on his doorstep. First, a spray bottle with a reminder to water the succulent every now and then. The second is a cleaned paddle from an ice cream with winner written across the length of it. Kagami takes them into his apartment, leaving them by the windowsill next to the succulent, more confused than he was before.

Six weeks into living in his new apartment, Kagami runs into someone.

He actually runs into them, knocking them off their feet entirely and sending them crashing against the wall.

"Shit," he says, helping the smaller guy back to his feet. "I didn't see you there, I'm sorry."

"It's okay, Kagami-kun," the guy replies, accepting the help. "Most people don't."

Kagami frowns. "You know who I am?"

The guy blinks at him. "I'm Kuroko Tetsuya. Your neighbour? I say hello to you every morning when we leave for work."

"Kuroko Tetsuya," Kagami says slowly, trying to remember anyone greeting him in the mornings, but coming up blank. His eyes go wide. "Succulent guy!"

Kuroko opens his mouth, shuts it again, and then sighs. "Yes. That's who I am. Succulent guy."

The first thing Miya does when Kita pushes him up against the wall and clicks the handcuffs into place is laugh, tipping his head back until it's resting on Kita's shoulder.

"You know I'm going to be out of these things by the time the sun rises."

"I'd like to see you try," Kita replies and he means it more than he's willing to admit. He likes playing this game, watching as Miya outsmarts the system, finding loopholes in loopholes, talking circles around the most experienced detectives with the same ease and skill that his twin brother does when he's in court.

The Miya name is a famous one among Kita's particular circle of law enforcement, and it's either said in tones of resignation or spat out like a curse because there are only two ways that a run-in with either of the twins will end but either way that it goes, they're the ones running the game, and they're the ones who will win.

Kita has learned a long time ago that it's much more enjoyable to play along to whatever they want for a while, and then back off enough to watch from the sidelines. He's best at standing back and watching instead of being in the thick of it himself; it's too easy to lose himself and lose sight of the whole picture when he's there. Everything makes much more sense from a distance. Miya makes more sense from a distance too, but Kita's never been that good at keeping enough of a distance when he's involved. He figures that everyone's allowed their mistakes, and Miya is Kita's favourite kind of mistake to make.

Now, pinning Miya against the wall, partially with his body weight and mostly with Miya's permission, he tightens the cuffs until they're just this side of painful. Miya gasps, mock-surprised.

"Do you feel like being rough with me today, officer?"

"Be glad that no one else can hear you," Kita mutters, "or I'd have to rise to that bait."

"Isn't it a shame that you won't?" Miya smiles, then lets out a genuine gasp as the handcuffs tighten a little more. "I'd rather not lose circulation in my hands, if it's all the same to you."

"Look at you, though," Kita mutters, looking down at where Miya's hands are flushing. "Literally caught red handed."

Miya laughs then, too loud, too amused, and it draws the attention of the other officers around. "See? This is why you're my favourite."

"It's really time for a haircut," Shindou's mother says over breakfast. Shindou blows his bangs out of his face and rolls his eyes. "I mean it, honey. I put that clipping of your last title match on the fridge and when Handa-san came over for tea she asked if you were transitioning."

"Transitioning to what?" Shindou demands.

"You know your father and I would love you no matter what," his mother tells him, and then laughs into her hand when Shindou snaps an affronted "Mom."

He's still grumbling about it that afternoon over his practice game with Touya. They could have gone out to the salon but with Touya's parents traveling again there's more privacy for yelling at his house. Besides, these days any fight over corners or archaic joseki has a fifty percent chance of turning into making out, and the percentage is rising gradually over time.

"She's driving me crazy," Shindou says. "Honestly, going on about my hair, it's ridiculous."

"Mm, yes it is," Touya says mildly, gaze drifting up to the palm tree tied up in the center of Shindou's head.

"I'm a professional! Who even cares about my hair?"

"Not you." Touya goes back to looking at the board, playing a stone with deliberate interest.

"That's right, not me!" Shindou agrees loudly. He frowns at the board. "Touya, what the shit was that?"

"You'll see in about fifteen moves." Touya's eyes flick up to Shindou's palm tree again. "Or maybe you won't."

"Ugh, not you too." Shindou gives an aggravated sigh.

"There's a simple solution, you know."

"There is!" Shindou announces. "I need to move out."

Touya splutters into laughter. "What? That's not what I—"

"Wanna move in together?" Shindou asked, cutting off Touya mid-laugh. Touya's eyes went wide. "Be cheaper that way."

Touya's eyes narrow. "That's the reason?"

"Nah, be nice to be able to play you any time I want and do it it without worrying one of our moms is gonna barge in and make some cracks about the laundry." Shindou smiles when Touya mutters that it's only Shindou's mother with the laundry jokes. "Come on, say yes."

"Focus on the game," Touya holds up a hand, "and I'll think about it."

It's easier said than done, a month looking at ads and seeing places in between matches, and then another month of packing and furniture and moving in the middle of summer, because they are idiots. But it's worth it when they have their futon unpacked and the AC cranked high enough to enjoy it without worrying about being walked in on by anybody so long as Shindou remembers to lock the front door.

In the morning, Shindou wakes up with the sun moving across their floor and Touya clinging to his side like a leech.

"Hey," Shindou whispers, bumping Touya's cheek with his shoulder. "Hey, my arm's asleep."

"Nnnn," Touya mutters, flopping over across Shindou's chest. He yawns, nose scrunching cutely, before opening his eyes the smallest amount possible to look at Shindou. "You know, you really need a haircut."

Touya doesn't really care about his hair one way or another. He's had the same haircut ever since he can remember and he doesn't see much reason to get himself a new one.

"Touya-san," even the stylist says, and maybe it's a little embarrassing he still goes to the same woman as his mother does, but Touya can't be fussed about that either. "Don't you want to ever try a new style? Something more adult would be more flattering, especially with your cheekbones and eyebrows."

"Thank you for the compliment, but no," Touya says politely. "If you changed it now I wouldn't even recognize myself in the mirror, probably."

It's not so much the mirror Touya cares about, which he only bothers to look in because it happens to be above the sink when he brushes his teeth. But he does care about Shindou's fingers winding through the long, black strands. He cares about the tightness of Shindou's grip when he's pulling Touya's head back to mouth at his neck or up for a kiss. He cares about the softer touches when they're falling asleep, Shindou's fingers dragging through them until Touya is boneless from the rhythm of it, smoothing out tangles first thing in the morning when they're too lazy to do anything but kiss or spoon together.

Shindou all but demands Touya come out to lunch with him, only mentioning halfway there, as if it slipped his mind, that he's actually meeting Akari. Touya rolls his eyes, because he doesn't mind Akari at all, and only says mildly that Shindou probably doesn't need to bring his boyfriend along as a human shield if he's just having lunch with a childhood friend.

Inside the cafe, Akari waves to them cheerfully from the table she's been guarding from the lunch rush. She looks perfectly professional in her blazer and skirt, and she also has a new haircut, which Touya compliments her on.

"Oh, do you like it?" Akari asks, putting a hand up to pat it self-consciously. It's a sleek bob, a little shorter in the back than the front, but it frames her face nicely. "I wanted something easy for summer, but you know as soon as I go out in the humidity, it poofs up like you wouldn't believe. I'm always so envious of your hair, Touya-kun. How do you keep yours so put-together?"

"Hm, well." Touya can't help but think of just outside the cafe door, when Shindou had smoothed down Touya's hair with his palms and then snuck a kiss as thanks. Touya hopes he isn't blushing. "I'm just lucky, I suppose."

Touya didn't mean for it to turn out like this. He was just busy at first, matches and professional appearances and then planning his parents' anniversary party, and then Shindou won Honinbou and their lives were a complete shitshow after that for weeks. His haircut seems like the least important thing, pushed back and pushed back, and then his hair dresser breaks her wrist and can't see clients for two months, and Touya can't at all be bothered to find a new one.

Then they have a heat wave, and Touya's hair is sticking to everything, his neck, his forehead, his cheeks. He's never thought a thing about his hair before, but he'd go have it chopped off right now except it's 20:00 on a Tuesday night and everything is closed. Also there's no way he's going back outside because the humidity just coming back from his teaching sessions was nearly enough to kill him, and the switch between outside to train AC to outside gave him a migraine that's only now starting to fade.

So instead he goes to the drawer of junk that accumulates in the kitchen and finds a rubber band and just ties all of it out of his face. And he really let this get out of control because he isn't even in the half-ponytail hair falling out all over stage, he's in actual tiny indie jrock band ponytail stage.

He'll get a haircut tomorrow, he thinks crankily as he falls back on the couch with the book he's been trying to finish since the beginning of summer. If he can fit it in between lunch with his mother and the interview with Go Weekly, and fuck, he forgot he promised to meet Aishiwara later. Maybe not.

The door slams eventually, Shindou stomping into the apartment with his usual lack of grace. He's already hollering the start of a story about whatever Waya did at the group session before he even finishes kicking off his sneakers. Touya doesn't look up from his book until Shindou comes around the corner and then stops mid-sentence.

"Hm?" Touya asks, looking up. Shindou's mouth is open like he's having trouble breathing, cheeks pink.

"Hot," Shindou manages.

"Yes, it's terrible outside," Touya comments. "Go drink some water before you—"

"Not outside, you moron," Shindou laughs. "YOU. You have a ponytail! Warn a guy!"

"It was just in my way!" Touya protests. Shindou is pulling the book out of his hands and dropping it carelessly on the floor, then climbing on top of Touya. "Oof. Shindou, it's too hot."

"Ponytail," Shindou breathes, and then his mouth is on Touya's, sucking all the air out of his lungs and raising the temperature in the apartment ten degrees in a matter of seconds.

Eventually Shindou's hands work their way into Touya's hair, gently pulling the rubberband free.

"Those aren't good for your hair," he mutters, combing fingers through Touya's sweat-damp hair and making Touya hum. "We'll get you some real ones at the combini. And some ice cream. Do you want ice cream?"

"Sure," Touya murmurs. He's probably not getting a haircut tomorrow.

That's the whole reason I ship them! I always get 'wtf atobe and momo' when I mention them, but they actually interact a fair amount in canon and they really are opposites in personality, so much so that momo doesn't even think to get his hackles up the way he does with kaidoh (which, don't get me wrong, I also love dearly).

Junta has one job and he'd like to think it's fairly simple. All he needs to do is not fuck this up. His friendship with Hajime is the best thing in his entire life and he needs it, the same way he needs air. He can't imagine what it would be like to live his life without it and he knows that no matter what he does, no matter what he says, he needs to make sure that he never, ever pushes Hajime away.

That means, among other things, that he can't do something like going and falling in love with his best friend and changing the entire dynamic of their friendship because even if Hajime isn't aware of it, it's going to be sitting there at the back of Junta's mind and affecting every single interaction that they have from here on out.

Junta, as usual, has already failed step one.

He tries denying the fact that he loves Hajime at all and that lasts all of two seconds before he glances over to his side again and melts, for the twenty third time that day, over how fucking gorgeous Hajime is.

Next, he tries squashing the feeling. He tries to push it all the way to the back of his mind, already knowing that it's not going to work because that's exactly what he does with all of his self doubt and it's never worked for him before, it's definitely not going to work for him now, when his entire friendship with Hajime is riding on his ability to ignore the loudest part of his mind that is demanding that he just throw caution to the wind and tell Hajime how he feels, or kiss him, or do anything else on his increasingly long list of stupid things he could do that would ensure the end of the best friendship he's ever had in his life and ever will.

There's no possible way to ignore it and so, Junta just lives with it. He chokes on it, forcing his words around the lump in his throat every time he looks at Hajime and it's a little heartbreaking, to know that their entire friendship is changing, day by day, and he can't do a single thing to stop it even though it's his own damn fault. He smiles and pretends not to see Hajime's questioning looks, and waves off his questions when he asks if everything's okay. There's no possible way to explain this to Hajime without making a bad situation even worse than it already is.

It's Junta's own damn fault, and it's just something that he's going to have to live with.

Square: Pretend couple becomes real
Word Count: 523

It starts off as a joke. It's Junta who brings it up, noting that everyone else in the club seems to think that he and Hajime are dating, so they might as well trick everyone by pretending that they actually are, only to laugh at them later when they reveal the fact that they aren't, that they're just good friends and nothing else.

Or that was the plan, anyway. Junta likes to think that he's pretty good at coming up with plans but he seems to have miscalculated somewhere along the lines and now they're here, too comfortable in their pretend relationship to want to stop.

It starts with the hand holding, Junta thinks. It's not really something they've never done before pretending to date each other and maybe that's why it's so easy to just hold on for a little longer than necessary. Even when there's no one else from the cycling club watching, they'll thread their fingers together without a second thought because they want to. Because Hajime's hands are warm, and Junta likes the way they fit together, like they were made to hold each other, the same way they were meant to wear matching gloves.

Then it's the way that they'll lean against each other whenever they're sitting together. Sometimes, Hajime will rest his head on Junta's shoulder and it's a nice feeling, made even better by the way that they're at perfect heights for Junta to then rest his head on top of Hajime's, both of them tucking themselves close against each other, sharing body warmth, sharing the same space.

It's all the casual contact, Junta realises. The lingering touches to each other's backs or shoulders, the way they'll pull each other along when walking between classes, the way they share food, share pens, share everything like they might as well be sharing their lives with each other.

It's the way Junta thinks to himself that he wouldn't mind, if it really came to that. He wouldn't mind living a life with Hajime always by his side. In fact, he can't think of living in any other way and once he's had the thought, it feels like the most obvious thing in the world to him.

When he tells Hajime, he's cautious about it, hesitant, afraid of ruining something good.

Hajime simply nods in agreement, and takes hold of Junta's hand again. "If you wanted to pretend, I was happy pretending. If you want to do the real thing, I'll be even happier."

"I made you wait, didn't I?" Junta realises, suddenly feeling selfish and guilty.

Hajime shakes his head, like he can read Junta's mind. He probably can. "It was worth the wait. You needed to get there on your own, or it wouldn't have been the same. I'm always here to support you and push you along, but there are some things that you need to arrive at by yourself. All I can do is wait for you, and encourage you when you're there."

"I'm here now," Junta murmurs.

"Yeah." Hajime smiles and, for the first time, presses a light kiss to Junta's cheek. "You are."

When Junta shows up to their date with a scarf, Hajime looks incredibly pleased with himself.

"Yeah, yeah," Junta mutters, but he knows he couldn't hold back his grin even if he tried. He's pleased by the recent discovery that Hajime likes leaving hickeys behind; his neck is completely covered in them and they ache pleasantly under the light material of Junta's scarf. There's something about Hajime's gaze, though, pleased and proprietary, that makes Junta like it even more.

"It's a warm day," Hajime points out, as they fall in step with each other.

"This is a light scarf," Junta replies, but then a thought occurs to him and he looks over at Hajime. "Do you want me to take it off? So that everyone can see?"

Hajime doesn't reply, but they've never needed words to communicate before and Hajime definitely doesn't need them now, his entire body language radiating approval at the thought of their classmates seeing the hickeys on Junta's neck. They'll know he's been claimed and it'll be obvious who he belongs to, and Junta likes the thought of that too. He thinks of showing them off, like badges of honour, like proof that he's worth something, like any medal or trophy, because he must be, if Hajime loves him like this, if Hajime takes so much pleasure in doing this to him.

"Junta," Hajime says softly, pulling him out of his thoughts. Junta realises that he's already hooked his index finger into the knot of his scarf, ready to pull it off. Hajime looks at him, amused and pleased all at once. "Giving in already?"

Junta knows a challenge when he hears one. He lowers his hand, knowing that the more he holds out, the more Hajime will want him to take his scarf off. He'll save it for later, for when there are the most people around so they can all see. It doesn't have to be this early in the morning, on their way to school for morning practice. The high neck of his jersey will cover the worst of the marks anyway so there's no point in uncovering them if they're just going to be hidden away again. He'll save it for when they won't be covered at all. Maybe he'll loosen his tie to make it more obvious. Anything that will help the marks stand out even more. He'll have everyone's eyes on him but most important, he knows that Hajime will get to see, and take pride in what he's left behind.

"Just you wait," Junta tells him. "It'll be worth it. For both of us."

It starts with the way that Hajime takes his hand when they're both walking together. They're on a date, it's not a big deal, Junta just spent most of the night before trying to figure out what to wear and then losing sleep over being too nervous that he's going to fuck something up. Not a big deal at all. It's the most casual thing in the world. And Hajime is holding Junta's hand. Not for support in the middle of a race, not a handshake, or a high five, or any other excuse Junta has ever used to press his palm to Hajime's. They're actually, honest to god, holding hands and Hajime still keeps walking like it's no big deal, like he isn't about to burn up and die, the way that Junta is.

Okay, cool. Holding hands. That's something that they do now. Junta can deal with that. He's not going to spend the entire day thinking about it. Definitely not the entire week. It's nothing. It's fine.

The first time Hajime hugs him in public, Junta is sure that there's steam coming out of his ears.

It's a hug goodbye, and it's not even that public a place because it's right in front of Junta's house, after Hajime has walked him home. It's just Hajime's arms around him, Hajime's face pressed into his shoulder, Hajime's body against his body, and Junta wonders if the jackhammering of his heart is actually as loud as it feels in his head, and if Hajime can hear it.

Probably not, seeing as how Hajime is just smiling at him like he's the best thing in the world, not the biggest loser in the world.

He wonders if there's any truth in what Hajime sees; Junta trusts his judgement with most things, it feels weird that he'd be so wrong about this one thing.

Junta figures that it's only a matter of time before Hajime kisses him when they're out together, so he decides to bite the bullet and do it first, so he's prepared, so he doesn't just up and die on the spot.

They're sitting on a park bench together, watching the sunset, and Junta strokes his fingers through Hajime's hair, pulling him into a kiss the way he usually does when they're in one of their rooms with the door shut. He rests his hand on the nape of Hajime's neck and kisses him, sweet and slow, and pulls back to find his boyfriend has turned completely red.

"Shit," Junta says.

"Y-You can't just," Hajime stammers. "J-Junta."

"I'm sorry," Junta says quickly. "I misread the signs didn't I? I did something you didn't want. I'm the worst, I—"

"Junta," Hajime interrupts, holding both his hands with his own. He's still red. "I loved it. But I'm going to burn up and die."

"Oh," Junta breathes, and then grins, leaning in and resting their foreheads together this time. Hajime is just like him, and it feels so obvious now that he's thought it, because of course they're just like each other. "Cool. Me too."

Yakisoba is the worst food in the entire world, Ooshiba thinks to himself as he angrily shovels it into his mouth, chewing on it hard like he can take out his irritation on the food itself. The smell of it, the taste of it, the way it reminds him of Kimishita. It's the absolute worst and he's never going to have it again. After he finishes this. Then never, ever again, in his whole life.

He hates the way that it carries too many memories, and even more than that, he hates the fact that they're good ones. He doesn't want to think of the way Kimishita has been running the yakisoba stall at the local festival for the past few years. He doesn't want to think of the way that Kimishita would let him help out, mostly by just sitting there and keeping him company while dealing with the customers, under strict instructions not to touch anything, not to eat anything, not to do anything at all except for just sit there, and Ooshiba would complain at him for it, but it would be the good-natured kind, knowing that he was there because Kimishita wanted him there. He never really needed any more than that, no matter how much he'd claim the opposite.

He hates remembering the festivals at all, of the way they used to be, when they'd both look forward to finally getting some time away from the stall so they could explore the others, using the half hour they got to play as many games as possible, to try all the other food, to escape the bustle of the festival entirely to hide in the trees just far enough away that no one would see the way they'd press close to each other, their mouths tasting of candy apples as they kissed, sleeves wet from the goldfish pool, the smell of oil and yakisoba all the way through their clothes from being by the grill for so long but not even caring about that, when yakisoba meant being together.

He hates it all now, and he hates Kimishita most of all, who never wants him anywhere near the stall on festival days any more, who won't spare even that half hour, just to get away from his work. He's always been serious but he's worse now, putting up more walls whenever Ooshiba finds his way around them. He doesn't have the time, he doesn't have the patience, maybe he just isn't interested any more and Ooshiba would believe it, if not for the way he sometimes catches the way Kimishita looks at him with quiet longing, like he misses the smell of yakisoba cooking too, the taste of candy apples, the sound of a festival in the distance and his own heartbeat in his ears.

Ooshiba hates it all.
