Bonus Round 2: Tic-Tac-Toe



Tic-Tac-Toe


SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).


Get three in a row! That's the goal of this bonus round. Inspired by a fanwork event type called kink bingo, this round encourages you to create and fill out themed prompt cards.


Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. There's a lot of text here, but if you read carefully and follow the instructions step by step, you will be okay.


RULES
Please refer to the first comment thread of this post for an example of how this round works.

PROMPTING

  1. Select a ship to create your prompt card about. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Haruki & Kazuma). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Haruki/Kazuma). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!

  2. Visit this card generator.
    • Here is a visual guide to using it.
    • The large text box is where you can list prompts if you have your own ideas. Please list at least 9 prompts; you can list more if you want. (The generator says you need at least 24, but it's lying.) Single words or short phrases are better than sentences.
    • Otherwise, you can use the dropdown menu found right below it. Note: some of these prompts lists are NSFW. (NSFW prompts are a-ok as long as you tag for it.) If you don't like some of the options that appear in a prompt list, you can delete them.
    • Text prompts only, please. Also, each card square must be unique—don't list the same prompt 9 times.
    • In "Configuration Options," make sure you select 3x3 and (Normal prompt). This is the most important step!
    • Leave the tic-tac-toe card with its default colors, so everyone can read it clearly.
    • Click the "Create a bingo card" button.
    • Scroll down to see the card that was created for you. If you don't like the prompts it picked, you can reroll by clicking "Create a bingo card" again.
    • When you're satisfied, scroll further down the page until you see a textarea box full of HTML.
  3. Copy and paste the HTML from the box and into the body of your prompt comment, then post!

FILLING

Fill prompts by selecting an individual square to create fanwork for, then leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work. (Optional:) If you can fill three squares from a prompt in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line, you get a tic-tac-toe (and an additional point bonus)! You can also just fill prompts as you please and get standard points.
  • Prompt squares are labeled as follows:
    A1 B1 C1
    A2 B2 C2
    A3 B3 C3
  • If you're trying for tic-tac-toe, you cannot combine squares into one fill. If your fill can satisfy multiple squares, pick the most relevant square: e.g., one square is sailing and another is pirates and you make a fill about pirates sailing, it's mostly pirates so put down the pirates square.
  • Each fill must stand alone as an individual piece, but all your fills can slot into a larger universe if you'd like.
  • You cannot fill a prompt square more than once, but you can fill every square on a tic tac toe card if you want to.
  • You cannot work with your teammates to get a tic-tac-toe. Only individually achieved tic-tac-toes get the bonus.
  • Multiple people can fill the same prompt square. You cannot "block" others from getting tic-tac-toe.
  • Remember to also follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

There’s magic in our veins, his mother always says. There’s magic and there’s power and you’re feeding it with everything you do.

Hanamiya thinks of all the blood he’s spilled, all the lives he’s blighted, and decides that he’s fed his soul enough. It’s time to see what it can do for him now.

He goes down to the crossroads at midnight, carrying a wooden box against his chest.

He’s not a believer but he’s bored. What harm can this do? This deep in the country (and curse his mother for taking him down here for the summer, who cares about the fishing?), there’s nothing to do, no one to torment. A little black magic might just break the spell of stultifying stillness that’s got Hanamiya’s bones itching with the need to do something (to hurt someone).

Inside the box he’s got all the components that he remembers his grandmother talking about. She phrased it as a wish you pay a price for but Hanamiya knew better even then. What she was talking about is a bargain, the proverbial deal with the devil.

Well, Hanamiya has a fresh deck of cards and he’s ready to deal.

The dirt at the crossroads is dry and hard. The physical labor of carving out a chunk big enough for him to bury the box under is tougher than Hanamiya expected; he’s sweating by the time he’s done, hand bloodied where a rock ripped the skin on his palm open. He places the box in the hole, pats the dirt over it, then stands back and wait.

When nothing happens after five minutes, he’s ready to leave. He turns and finds himself face-to-face with a teenager about his own age, dark-haired and with closed eyes curved like a tanuki’s.

The yelp he makes is a little undignified, Hanamiya will admit, but every man is allowed a few moments of awkwardness in their lives and finding out that you successfully summoned a demon is a good reason to be awkward.

“You are not very patient,” the demon observes, its tone surprisingly polite. “Most people wait much longer.”

“Most people probably only do this if they’re so desperate that they’ll wait as long as it takes for a miracle,” Hanamiya shoots back, stuffing his hands in his pocket. He refuses to step back and cede any ground to the demon so they talk like that, face-to-face and so close their bodies are touching.

“If you are not that desperate, then why summon me in the first place?” The demon asks.

“I was bored,” Hanamiya says. His mouth curls into a smile that would shame any demon. “And I wanted a friend.”

Demons, Hanamiya finds, have a huge advantage over humans as playmates: no matter how they’re hurt, they never die.

It all starts with a punch. It starts with tears falling from Tatsuya's eyes. It starts with Atsushi realising how much he cares and how he can't hide it.

It grows from there, turning into something of a habit. A ritual. They save it for the interval between the second and third quarters and only when they truly need it. Only when they're facing a challenging team and struggling, and Atsushi's mood is dropping while Tatsuya's self-loathing is increasing, most likely against one of Atsushi's former teammates from Teiko. They don't need the violence or anger of the first time, when it's enough for Tatsuya to just reach out, touching his hand to Atsushi's cheek and holding it there, as the rest of the team walks back out onto the court.

Atsushi will hum, covering Tatsuya's hand with his own and keeping it there, grounding them both. Atsushi listens to Tatsuya breathe in, then breathe back out, and does the same.

"The scoreboard doesn't matter," Tatsuya says and Atsushi snorts because it's the worst lie he's ever told. "It doesn't matter how we've done until now, just focus on what we're going to do next. How we're going to change things from now on."

"I'm going to crush them," Atsushi declares. "Just you watch, Muro-chin."

"Watch?" Tatsuya grins. "I'm going to crush them even more than you do."

"You can't trick me that easily," Atsushi grumbles, even as he takes the hair band that Tatsuya is holding out for him. He ties his hair up and Tatsuya gives him an appraising look that makes Atsushi feel warm.

"Come on, Atsushi," Tatsuya murmurs, leaning in to kiss the corner of his mouth.

"You missed," Atsushi grumbles, turning his head, but Tatsuya is already leaning away.

"If we win," Tatsuya promises him, "I'll kiss you as many times as you want."

"I just want one kiss now," Atsushi grumbles, taking Tatsuya's hand into his and kissing his fingers instead. It would be tender to anyone else, but Tatsuya just laughs and pulls his hand away.

"You're too greedy, Atsushi. Use that greed on the court, will you?"

"I always do," Atsushi replies, standing up and letting Tatsuya lead the way out of the lockers and back to the court. "I'm not going to give any more baskets away. I'm not going to let you score all the baskets either, Muro-chin. I'm competing with you too, you know."

Tatsuya gives him the most beautiful smile just before stepping onto the court, all fire and determination. "I'm counting on it, Atsushi."

Grey-eyed Athene, goddess of war and wisdom, walks the earth in librarian glasses and sleek black slacks that don’t show blood. Her hair is short, easy to wash, and her art skills are still terrible.

Nemesis doesn’t care. Nemesis has never cared.

Nemesis follows after Athene, a leal and lethal lover. Athene stretches out her hand and Nemesis nuzzles into it. Athene says ‘kill’ and Nemesis obeys.

It has always been so, two girls together, fighting a system that would have them bow to stronger powers.

Athene had no mother, the mortals say, she was born from Zeus’ head.

“No,” Nemesis corrects them, all fanged grins and fierce superiority. “Zeus killed her mother. He ate her.”

The mortals blanch. They want their mythology to be so clean, so easy. They want Athene to be the dutiful daughter, the chaste virgin who despite her wisdom and her war-skills, still listens to her father.

Such a lie. It’s such a stupid lie.

But it’s the myth that persists because stories are told by the mortals, not by the gods.

Still, Nemesis kills the liars. She comes for them for smearing the name of her lover and brings their tongues to Athene.

No more turning girls into spiders or striking men blind. Athene has a higher calling now. Warfare has become so complicated and wisdom wars with deliberate ignorance.


“You are wasting your time,” Athene tells Nemesis, “One mortal at a time, you never achieve much.”

“I will if it’s the right mortal,” Nemesis says and throws herself over the couch. Athene’s slim fingers dance over the keys, opening up places that mortals think secure, and Nemesis thinks longingly of how easily she opens to those clever fingers. She slinks off the couch and wraps her arms around Athene’s shoulders, pressing against her back.

“What are you doing now?” She asks, breath ghosting over Athene’s ear.

“Saving the world,” Athene says, “Or perhaps dooming it.”

There’s a carved owl statue on her desk, made from the wood of a gallow’s tree, and Nemesis considers breaking the computer screen. No. She must be patient.

But Athene has always been able to outscheme her. Nothing but a frontal attack will suffice.

“A professor said that you were an example of patriarchal values,” Nemesis says as she starts stripping.

Athene nods without looking away from the keys. “Tongue for dinner?”

“Tongue for dinner,” Nemesis confirms and slips into Athene’s lap, naked and glowing with the eager force of her power. She dances her fingers along Athene’s jaw and turns Athene’s head so she can kiss her, stroke her tongue against Athene’s.

Such fools, the mortals who thought that Athene was nothing but her father’s obedient pawn.

Who did they think had come up with the plan to overthrow Zeus?

“I love you,” Imayoshi says and Hanamiya laughs with delight like a baby seeing bubbles for the first time.

“It sounds so unbelievably stupid when you say it,” Hanamiya says, chuckling still. “Say it again.”

Imayoshi’s teeth flash in a smile. “I love you.”

The discordance of it (Imayoshi! As if he is even capable of love!) is the best joke that Hanamiya has ever heard.

He rolls on the floor with laughter, clutching his sides. Eventually his sides start to ache but Imayoshi won’t let up. Whenever Hanamiya’s laughter starts to subside, Imayoshi says ‘I love you’ again with that perfect sincerity and then Hanamiya’s lost to helpless laughter once more.

“God,” he says when Imayoshi finally tires of torturing him and allows Hanamiya to sprawl over the bed again with his head in Imayoshi’s lap. “There are girls out there who would actually believe it if you told them that with that face.”

“Yes,” Imayoshi agrees, combing his fingers through Hanamiya’s hair. Hanamiya grins up at him, so pleased with the thought, that Imayoshi says again, “I love you.”

Hanamiya says ‘I like this’ or ‘I like you’ a lot. He says it carelessly with almost Western indifference, throwing it around to his teammates when they perform well or commenting even on a brand of chocolate that he especially likes.

He never says ‘I love you’. He never says it back to Imayoshi.

(If he said it, he wouldn’t be lying and he knows Imayoshi would see that in an instant.)

Hanamiya gets an invitation to the wedding, of course. He’s not seated at the front, nowhere near the family and the important wedding guests, but halfway down. The acoustics in the hall are wonderful; every word of the priest’s boring speech is carried clearly down to Hanamiya.

He sits through the exchange of nuptial cups, through the priest’s vows, through their agreement to the vows. He heads to the reception and is a perfect guest - until it’s time for the speeches. Imayoshi stands up to toast his bride and goes on about her many virtues until Hanamiya is openly rolling his eyes. Everyone knows this is a marriage of political convenience. He doubts that Imayoshi has even spoken to the girl for more than a few hours before this.

For just a second, Imayoshi’s gaze catches Hanamiya’s. Hanamiya smirks at him and Imayoshi turns back to his bride.

Very clearly and distinctly, Imayoshi says, “I love you.”

Hanamiya doesn’t laugh.

I was going to do a tic-tac-toe of C3 being Haru defending that Rin IS important to him and B2 being split between both of them admiring Rin but then I went STOP OVERTHINKING EVERYTHING.

Rin’s laughter drifts across the pool and Sousuke smiles before he sees what’s making Haru laugh.

It’s Haru. Of course it’s Haru. It’s always fucking Haru.

The worst part is, Haru isn’t even trying. He’s just himself, socially awkward and always ready to swim. He splashes about in the water like a leaf floating through air and moves on land like a wave cresting and falling. His hair is always slick, always a little wet-looking even in winter, and Sousuke knows it isn’t because of any wax or mousse. He’s touched it slyly and it slipped through his fingers like silk. It’s so fine that it probably doesn’t even knot while Sousuke’s hair gets frizzy and pouffy so easily.

Haru swims like most people breathe, Haru always looks so put together, Haru never seems to even try to get Rin’s attention.

Haru has Rin’s attention the way objects have mass - or the way that pools have Haru’s attention.

That is honestly the worst part.

If Haru were trying, if Haru wanted to seduce Rin, then Sousuke could fight back. He could point at Haru’s sly jibes or comment on Haru being touchy-feely. He could put Rin on his guard against Haru, he could get reassurance from Rin that Rin still loved him.

But Haru is doing nothing except being himself. How is Sousuke supposed to compete with that?

He loves Rin. He really does. But sometimes he wants to grab his boyfriend by the shoulders, shake him hard and demand, “How can you be in love with someone who is in love with swimming?”

Rin could no more compete with that than Sousuke could compete with Haru.

He grits his teeth and watches Rin drift away from him, carried on a current that takes him right back to where he started from.

“-for the team,” he hears Haru say and his hands curl into fists.

He can’t swim anymore but even when if he could, he knows Rin would never look at him the way he’s looking at Haru now.

“Do you even like Rin?” Sousuke demands of Haru when they’re alone.

“Of course I do. Rin’s my friend.” The innocent answer is all the more frustrating for how Haru looks so genuinely surprised.

“Not like that.” Sousuke has to fight to keep his voice calm. “Romantically.”

“He’s with you,” Haru says as if Rin being taken means of course Haru can’t like him.

Or, more pertinently, than Rin can’t like him.

Something starts to cross Haru’s face that looks frightfully close to understanding and all at once, Sousuke realizes the mistake he’s made.

Haru hadn’t even realized that taking Rin from Sousuke was an option.

omg, thank you SO MUCH for the nice comment to a fill that wasn't even written for you! I'm really glad that it resonated with you so much.

I think there's a very real helplessness that comes with seeing someone fighting their inner demons and knowing that there isn't anything real you can do to fight. I usually see it with depression but I actually have two friends who are DID (none like Akashi, both in treatment and on meds) and sometimes it goes badly and there's nothing I can do to make them switch back. Except wait and hope and pray and try to hold myself together in the meantime.

Kuroko's in that spot and he's doing the best he can. And he'll continue doing it, every time he has to, but he won't forget to take care of himself.

Ahahaha what Kuroko follow Akashi blindly? He walked the fuck AWAY from Teiko and stood right up to Akashi when Rakuzen fought Seirin. I don't know why anyone would expect him to roll over and take it, baby boy has got GUTS.

But also thank you for that comment! I'm glad you like my Kuroko given you KNOW how recently I started writing him.

I definitely think that Akashi isn't the type to be sadistic for the SAKE of being sadistic. If he's cruel, there's a reason for it. Like he didn't abandon his team at Rakuzen until they failed him.

Likewise he isn't going to brand Kuroko for the fun of seeing Kuroko suffer. What he craves is control rather than Kuroko's pain. It's what differentiates him from Haizaki or Hanamiya.

He'll hurt Kuroko and he'll feel no guilt over it but that's because he has a reason. But to Kuroko, the reason doesn't matter. What matters is the pain that Akashi will inflict even as he promises an end to pain.
