Bonus Round 2: Tic-Tac-Toe

Tic-Tac-Toe

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Get three in a row! That's the goal of this bonus round. Inspired by a fanwork event type called kink bingo, this round encourages you to create and fill out themed prompt cards.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. There's a lot of text here, but if you read carefully and follow the instructions step by step, you will be okay.

RULES
Please refer to the first comment thread of this post for an example of how this round works.

PROMPTING

  1. Select a ship to create your prompt card about. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Haruki & Kazuma). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Haruki/Kazuma). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!

  2. Visit this card generator.
    • Here is a visual guide to using it.
    • The large text box is where you can list prompts if you have your own ideas. Please list at least 9 prompts; you can list more if you want. (The generator says you need at least 24, but it's lying.) Single words or short phrases are better than sentences.
    • Otherwise, you can use the dropdown menu found right below it. Note: some of these prompts lists are NSFW. (NSFW prompts are a-ok as long as you tag for it.) If you don't like some of the options that appear in a prompt list, you can delete them.
    • Text prompts only, please. Also, each card square must be unique—don't list the same prompt 9 times.
    • In "Configuration Options," make sure you select 3x3 and (Normal prompt). This is the most important step!
    • Leave the tic-tac-toe card with its default colors, so everyone can read it clearly.
    • Click the "Create a bingo card" button.
    • Scroll down to see the card that was created for you. If you don't like the prompts it picked, you can reroll by clicking "Create a bingo card" again.
    • When you're satisfied, scroll further down the page until you see a textarea box full of HTML.
  3. Copy and paste the HTML from the box and into the body of your prompt comment, then post!

FILLING

Fill prompts by selecting an individual square to create fanwork for, then leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work. (Optional:) If you can fill three squares from a prompt in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line, you get a tic-tac-toe (and an additional point bonus)! You can also just fill prompts as you please and get standard points.
  • Prompt squares are labeled as follows:
    A1 B1 C1
    A2 B2 C2
    A3 B3 C3
  • If you're trying for tic-tac-toe, you cannot combine squares into one fill. If your fill can satisfy multiple squares, pick the most relevant square: e.g., one square is sailing and another is pirates and you make a fill about pirates sailing, it's mostly pirates so put down the pirates square.
  • Each fill must stand alone as an individual piece, but all your fills can slot into a larger universe if you'd like.
  • You cannot fill a prompt square more than once, but you can fill every square on a tic tac toe card if you want to.
  • You cannot work with your teammates to get a tic-tac-toe. Only individually achieved tic-tac-toes get the bonus.
  • Multiple people can fill the same prompt square. You cannot "block" others from getting tic-tac-toe.
  • Remember to also follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points for each tic-tac-toe card (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each
Tic-tac-toe Bonus: 2 points each for the first 12 achieved by your team

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

Have a question? Check The FAQ first. If you still need help, feel free to contact the mods. Happy fanworking!

very sorry this is sad, in the ffx au of my heart hinata is the smallest summoner

***

"It's just, the statues were always so serious, you know? Then when we saw those spheres it was like--ahh! Sugawara-san and Daichi-san and Asahi-san were just people like us. Sugawara-san smiled and laughed and--I don't know, he seemed like a different person. I guess, like a person...?"

Hinata's voice trailed off, and Kageyama counted his own heartbeats in the silence until Hinata reached his limit and erupted with a loud, indignant squawk. "Oi, asshole! Are you even listening?"

The sun was shining overhead, angled just past noon, but against the dull grey sky even the light felt brittle and cold. Kageyama shook his head and followed the dirt path below with his eyes, where it wound around the inn and stretched up toward the mountains, countless old footprints erased by each fresh layer of indifferent snow. Hinata was bristling beside him, spluttering something about his heartfelt speech--stupid Kageyama ignoring the atmosphere again--but Kageyama couldn't look at his face, so he squinted at the heavy horizon where somewhere beyond lay the Calm Lands and the final stretch of their journey.

He was thinking, they do that on purpose, you know, but the words got lost somewhere in his throat.

"Whatever," Hinata said sullenly. "You don't have to be in it if you really don't want to. No one has to see that scary face you're making right now."

Kageyama felt his brows pinch together, but Hinata's sigh was so obnoxiously loud that he bit back his retort and dared a sideways glance. Hinata was hunched forward with his knees pulled up to his chest, and he was already shivering conspicuously. He'd worn several layers of cloaks since they left Guadosalam, but somehow the bundled effect only seemed to emphasise the impossible smallness of his body. Hinata's face was pale and his nose was red and his stupid wavering pout made every part of Kageyama hurt.

Kageyama looked away. "I'll do it," he said, grinding out at the words against the tension in his jaw. "So shut up about it, okay?"

"What--seriously?"

Hinata's expression was like daybreak in a brighter place: like Kageyama imagined Besaid must have been, colourful and loud and so much warmer than the fractured light glaring from Macalania's perpetual ice. "Thanks, Kageyama!" he beamed. "Don't worry! We won't ask you to smile--"

Hinata screeched like a chocobo when Kageyama roughed up his hair, but the punishment was brief. He skittered fast out of range, then dropped into exaggerated combat stance at the edge of the rooftop, swaying restlessly while he assessed the actual threat level.

"Careful, idiot!" Kageyama snapped out, by habit. "You'll fall off."

Hinata poked out his tongue. "Wouldn't that be your fault? Summoner Hinata's pilgrimage ends when his own guardian throws him off the r--hey!"

Hinata neatly dodged the kick, but Kageyama hadn't really been aiming.

He didn't say: they do it on purpose, dumbass, because he would not explain to Hinata Shouyou, shittiest Summoner in Spira, that they made those statues so austere and impersonal because they did not want them to look human, to look like ordinary people with ordinary lives who smiled and laughed in their backwater island towns--people who sucked at passing but swam like they were born from the water, who danced like leaves on an updraft and puked before each Cloister of Trials.

He said: "Go inside already, dumbass," and turned his face back toward the horizon, so the sudden wild bitterness wouldn't show in his eyes. "It's getting colder." Hinata's words echoed in his mind until they lost all levity in their resonance. Summoner Hinata's pilgrimage ends--

There was no possible conclusion to the sentence that brought him any sense of relief.

"Kageyama?" Hinata said, uncertainly. He was leaning in at a cautious distance to peer at Kageyama's face. "Are you actually mad? You should come inside too. You'll get sick."

A High Summoner's death would be revered for generations to come; no one would remember his life in the same way. Hinata wanted to record a sphere to leave his smile behind, but no one wanted to pray at the feet of smiling human sacrifice.

"Idiot," Kageyama said, on an exhale. His breath frosted in the air and he watched it disperse slowly, staring so hard his eyes began to water. "I don't need you to tell me that."

i'm yeLLING i thought nobody would fill this tbh AND YOU PICKED THE RAMEN ONE!!!!!

i read on a ramen package somewhere that it's 3 minutes because 2 minutes is too short to really tempt your hunger and four minutes is too long of a wait for your hunger, so i was interested to see what could occur in those 3 minutes... and your fill. the comfortable quiet between them, the calm contemplative mood as their boxed things are piled up around them, in their new home, their new life... the paragraph about summer and more importantly, together... how their interaction is equal teasing and easy negotiating, it's so easy to see them moving in together and saying cheers with cup noodles, aaaa i love this so much!!

the mistakes we could make, that i have made

  1. falling in love with you was the first and the biggest.

  2. see, sagittarius and cancer are not compatible signs.
you are action and fire and vision where i am water and the steady rhythm of the sea, a harbour in a storm.
fire and water have never mixed well and darling, i thought we could do it.
    i was wrong.

  3. telling you.

  4. that would have wrecked us as we are.
friendships do not survive relationships and i supposed that made us doomed from the start.
but i think you know and i know you know i think this, so we circle each other, waiting for the axe to fall.
i don’t know which of us will survive, or if we survive at all.

  5. loving each other.

  6. did you know that you have a way with words, that they fly like arrows, and they always hit their mark?
see, we might agree on many things now but we won’t always, and you have always been careless in your cruelty.
i may have walls and armour around my heart but letting you in stripped me bare.
you may not mean to, but one day you will hurt me too badly, and i will not be able to forgive you.

  7. leaving.

  8. you will leave me, in the end. you may flicker like a dying ember until you fade away from my smothering you-
or you might go out in a blaze of glory, and take the best of me with you.
i don't know how to tell you that this is a mistake, that we are a mistake.
i think you can see it.

    and yet, you are here.

Ren keeps his eyes on the little cotton swabs in his hand, carefully dabbing at the scrapes on Abe’s knee. They’re sitting in the bathroom, first-aid kit spread out on the floor while Abe perches on the bathtub and Ren kneels in front of him.

“I can do it myself,” Abe says again.

Ren picks out the bits of gravel still stuck within the cuts, and Abe doesn’t quite manage to hold back his winces of pain. “I’m helping Abe-kun,” Ren says.

“Yeah,” sighs Abe. He sits still, shifting his leg to allow Ren a better view. Silence falls between them again.

It was a nasty fall he took, and a rather stupid one, too, in Ren’s opinion. Abe would probably argue differently. But Ren doesn't have the heart or energy to argue with the other boy—he never did, never does. Especially not over something like this. It’s Ren’s fault, really, he should have checked before he crossed the street but it was a small back road and anyway, it’s not like any of the cars around here go very fast. And the driver saw him, Ren knows this because the car slowed. But Abe, stupidly brave and caring and self-sacrificing Abe, had to run after Ren to shove him out of the way, only to end up hurt himself.

Ren keeps his face down because he doesn’t want Abe to see the ugly scowl on his face. The more he replays the accident, the more angry he is. Ren’s not used to feeling this way. He doesn’t like it at all.

The cotton swabs and Abe’s knee start to go blurry. Ren pulls away, wiping his eyes with his sleeve. He presses his lips tightly together to keep any sounds from escaping.

Abe shifts on the bathtub. “Mihashi...?”

Ren keeps quiet.

A few moments pass like that, the both of them unable to find the right words. Ren throws out the cotton swabs, trades them for the proper salve and bandages. He works methodically, keeping his touch gentle but firm. His hands don’t shake, but his lower lip does.

“Mihashi,” Abe says, and Ren pauses with his hands on the bandages. “Are you angry at me?”

“N-No.”

“Mihashi.”

Ren squeezes his eyes shut. “Yes!” he bursts out. “I’m angry at Abe-kun! For risking a bigger injury, for getting hurt—You’re hurt because of me.”

Abe sighs. “I might have overreacted a little, back there. But at least it wasn’t you. If you’d hurt yourself, I’d be really upset.”

“I’m! Upset that you got hurt!”

“I know.” Abe reaches forwards and places a hand on top of Ren’s clenched fist. “I’m sorry, Mihashi.”

Ren stares at him. Abe’s expression is somber, mouth tilted down, gaze steady. It’s familiar, echoing back to that lost game all those years ago, when they were both fifteen and young but still so desperately clinging to each other. They’ve moved past that now, grown up a bit, learned to trust in each other a bit more. But sometimes, Ren thinks they haven’t really changed at all.

“Okay,” he says. He breathes out, and lets his anger and fear dissipate slowly. He finds Abe’s eyes again, and tries for a small smile. “Okay,” he repeats.

Abe lifts his hand and brushes his fingers through Ren’s hair. Ren leans into the touch. “We’ll both be more careful next time,” Abe agrees, and Ren nods, a promise.

Like a backdrop in a play, it is a constant in their lives, unnoticed but all-encompassing, like mountains in the horizon or the sky on a hot day. On the day before Rin left for the first time, Haru stood before the naked cherry blossom tree, willing it to bloom if only for Rin's sake. Behind the tree was the chain-link fence, and beside him was Rin, grinning and talking about dreams and pointing at the phrase he wrote on the bricks as if it meant anything. As if it meant he would stay.

Haru forgave him for leaving, though, just as he forgives him now for coming back.

-

Rin can be cruel when he wants to be, and so can Haru. When Rin corners him and tells him all sorts of things he doesn't want to hear, when he lights fires under Haru against Haru's will as if he still had the right, something in Haru snaps. He never wanted to carry this blame, he never wanted to fight, but it's all Rin seems intent to do.

He's backed into the chain-link fence and as images from that fateful day flicker in his mind, the words come out on their own, salt in a wound.

"Don't say you're going to quit. Don't embarrass yourself." And, worst of all, "don't cry if you lose."

Haru will remember the betrayal on Rin's face for years to come.

-

Later on, quietly as they're falling asleep, Rin will tell him about how Haru had never left his mind — not when he was in Australia, not when they were fighting — and how he'd been especially prominent one festival night when Rin saw a couple of kids together, friends just like they'd been when they were younger. How he'd ran as far away from the scene as he can and ended up in front of a pool, the water always a taunting presence, and how his fingers had curled into a chain-link fence as his heart seemed to give out.

And Haru will whisper, into the red waves of Rin's hair, that even when he was Australia, and even when they were fighting, Rin had always been his friend, didn't he already know that?

-

But for now, with the sunset above them and the summer on their skin, they put every other memory of the chain-link fence behind them as Haru presses Rin against it, this time, his hands gentle on Rin's jaw, his eyes earnest and closed. Their mouths meet under a cherry blossom tree in full bloom and Haru decides this is the only one he wants to keep.

Bokuto starts growing wings one day.

It used to be a metaphor until Akaashi notices the feathers sticking out of Bokuto's skin one day, tiny pinfeathers sprouting between his shoulder blades, barely there until Akaashi runs a hand lightly over them and feels them soft and there under his palm. Bokuto doesn't seem to notice anything and Akaashi goes home earlier for a good night's sleep that day after practice. Just in case.

But he isn't going mad and he catches Bokuto scratching his back through his shirt over the next few days, frowning absently like there is an itch he can't quite reach. The next time Akaashi sees Bokuto without his shirt on, the feathers have grown and there are more of them, forming into a small but distinct pair of wings against his back.

Bokuto laughs and chats to the other members all the same before turning to his bag for his shirt. Akaashi grabs his arm, stopping him in his tracks, and Bokuto looks at him, his head tilted in confusion. Akaashi fishes his shirt out of his bag for him and pushes it against his chest. He doesn't let Bokuto go until his shirt is on, covering his back and those many, growing feathers. The rest of the clubroom has started to stare but it isn't anything particularly unusual between Akaashi and Bokuto come to think of it and they lose interest in due time.

"Akaashi, what—" Bokuto asks and Akaashi pulls him out of the clubroom, collecting both their bags on their way out. He doesn't stop pulling him along until they have left the school building, gone past the gates and started on the way back home in the early night.

Akaashi finally lets go of Bokuto once they are far away enough from school. Bokuto looks oddly flushed when Akaashi passes him his bag, his eyes darting all over the place and his mouth wobbling around the edges.

"Bokuto-san," Akaashi starts and Bokuto whips his head around to face him, his expression eager. It catches Akaashi off guard and he derails from his previous train of thought to ask, "What?"

"Nothing," Bokuto says too quickly, too guiltily.

"Bokuto-san?" Akaashi tries again, testing the waters, trying to see if Bokuto's odder than usual behaviour has something to do with the wings growing from his back. Maybe he found out that Akaashi knew about them. Maybe he doesn't want anyone to know about them.

"Okay," Bokuto finally cracks after a full five seconds of silence from Akaashi while Akaashi thinks about his options, "Konoha told me this but I didn't believe him because it can't be but this is the moment isn't it?"

"What moment?" Akaashi asks cautiously.

"Are you confessing to me, Akaashi?" Bokuto blurts out. "Is that it?"

"No," Akaashi says bluntly, shocked. Bokuto's unexpected steering of this conversation throws him further off course from what he had wanted to say. How did they get from growing wings to love confessions?

"Oh." Bokuto wilts, trying not to look disappointed and failing. "Konoha was wrong."

"...we'll talk about this later," Akaashi says, trying to steer the conversation back to what he had wanted to say initially. "I did want to speak about something important to you though, Bokuto-san."

"Is it about volleyball?"

"It's about you."

"Me?" Bokuto asks, surprised then hopeful. "Do you like me, Akaashi?"

"I do, but not enough for a confession," Akaashi says and tries not mind how Bokuto's disappointment bothers him. "What I was trying to ask is about the wings on your back."

"The what?"

"Are you aware that you're growing wings, Bokuto-san?"

There has never been a record of a winged person in the history of Bokuto's family as far as Bokuto knows or another other person's family history as far as Akaashi knows. But here Bokuto is, the first and possibly only human with wings they both know of. And neither of them know what to do.

His wings keep growing, day after day, week after week, and Akaashi checks their growth obsessively after every practice. He doesn't know why he does it—out of curiosity or fascination or fear? He doesn't know how big they will grow but Bokuto might end up with a full pair of wings at this rate and then how will he be able to live life as who he is? Bokuto has always been an extraordinary person but even actual wings were too much of an extraordinary thing for him. Akaashi could live his entire life by Bokuto's side and he thinks he would never run out of extraordinary things to encounter.

"What do I do about them, Akaashi?" Bokuto asks him with a curious mix of exhilaration and fear in his bright, golden eyes as they crouch in the cluboom after dark, after everyone has gone home for the day.

Akaashi wants to ask him about what Konoha said, why he had thought Akaashi would confess to Bokuto, why he had thought Akaashi had liked Bokuto like that, but there are more pressing issues at hand. Such as the wings growing out of Bokuto's back. They are about a handspan long now and Bokuto can move them as if they have always been a part of him, flapping them enthusiastically but uselessly against his back.

They are kind of cute, reminding Akaashi of the baby birds he has seen in pictures online, but they don't belong there against Bokuto's very human back. He doesn't know what anyone would do to Bokuto if they ever saw what Akaashi sees now. It's a miracle. Or a specimen.

"You have to hide them," Akaashi tells him.

---

They get through the inter-highs somehow with Akaashi worrying every step of the way that Bokuto's wings will peek through the top of his shirt when he flies in the air. By Nationals, he fears that they will be seen even if Bokuto stays perfectly still on court without running or jumping, which is what he doesn't do anyway. By the week before the third years' graduation, Akaashi starts binding Bokuto's wings because they have begun to show under his shirt, their outlines clearly defined against the thin cloth.

They stop eating at the canteen and stop hanging out in the corridor outside Akaashi's classroom when Bokuto comes looking for him, moving entirely to the rooftop where no one is because they aren't supposed to be up here. But Bokuto is graduating soon and Akaashi supposes this counts as an exception so they stay up there on days where the weather is fine and sunny like this.

It gives Bokuto a chance to breathe without the constricting pressure of the bandages around his chest because it is the only time Akaashi lets him take them off at school. Bokuto fiddles with the clips holding them in place and the bandages slide out from under his shirt, slipping to the floor in long tendrils. Akaashi sees the outline of his wings reappear through his shirt, the cloth folding along the edges of his wings.

"Much better," Bokuto sighs and he shrugs off his shirt entirely.

He hops over to the edge of the rooftop, his nose just stopping short of the wire netted fence, and spreads his arms out wide. The sunlight catches on him, drawing his shadow on the surface of the roof, the tips of his wings peeking out from behind his shadow's shoulders. They have grown again.

"Come away from the edge, Bokuto-san." Akaashi tells him. "Someone might see you."

Bokuto jumps back down, squatting close to where Akaashi is. "Do you think I might be able to fly with these one day?" he asks, flapping his wings against his back, which does nothing but work up a breeze.

"I don't know. But they would need to be very big to be able to get a full-grown human off the ground."

"I'd be in trouble then, wouldn't I?" Bokuto sighs. "They won't let me keep playing volleyball. Seems unfair if your opponent can actually fly."

"I'm not sure they'll let you keep doing anything if that happens. No one's ever seen a winged human before. They might want to investigate you."

"I don't want to be a science experiment." Bokuto wrinkles his nose.

"Research subject," Akaashi corrects. "But I wouldn't want you to be one either, Bokuto-san."

Bokuto props his face in his hands. "So what do I do about these then? They only seem to be getting bigger. And it seems like such a shame to get rid of them," he says wistfully.

Akaashi wouldn't want to see them gone either, now that they have grown this big. They reach midway down Bokuto's back with a fully formed bone structure amidst the feathers. Even with the bandages holding them down, they still make Bokuto's back look bulky and Akaashi is only thankful that Bokuto is constantly in motion so that no one can actually take a proper look at his back.

They are still growing and it would be nice if Bokuto could fly with them one day. It seems fitting. If Akaashi had to pick someone out of everyone he has met in his lifetime to be given the wings to fly, he would pick Bokuto. He has never met anyone so suited to flight.

"Hey, Akaashi," Bokuto says hesitantly.

"Hm?"

"Even if I graduate and leave for university or get kicked out of university for my unfair advantages, you'll still meet up with me from time to time, won't you?" Bokuto asks. "Like you won't want to cut all contact with me the moment I stop being your official teammate right?"

"No, I won't," Akaashi says and finds that he really means it. He won't be able to stop thinking about Bokuto even if they aren't on the same team or in the same school anymore. It isn't just about his wings or his new volleyball team in university but about Bokuto himself.

Maybe this is what Konoha had meant when he told Bokuto that Akaashi might confess to him. Akaashi doesn't know what kind of emotions might spark off a confession when he has never been involved in one before. Maybe they something have to do with Bokuto's kind of "like" when he had asked Akaashi if he liked him. Akaashi doesn't know if his kind of "like" can match up to Bokuto's but he thinks he understands it now after answering Bokuto's question. It isn't exactly a confession, not in the way Bokuto expects, but Akaashi finds himself thinking that he doesn't want to leave Bokuto's side.

They're hanging out in Kagami's apartment in Chicago when it happens. It's late, they're tired, and they're too comfortable around each other to give much thought to personal space any more. Since mending their relationship, Kagami and Himuro have easily fallen back into the same sort of closeness they were used to back when they grew up together in L.A. Aomine is a new addition, but they've gotten closer since graduating high school, since he also moved to America to pursue a professional basketball career.

Kagami knows, on some level, that Aomine and Himuro have been spending time together in L.A. He hasn't given it much thought, beyond being glad that the two of them are getting along. He isn't prepared for it when Aomine reaches out, resting his hand on the back of Himuro's neck and pulling him into a kiss. He isn't prepared for just how willingly Himuro goes, eyelashes fluttering shut as their lips meet, his hand bracing against Aomine's knee.

They kiss like it's not the first time they've done this and Kagami watches them, feeling his mouth go dry. Himuro wraps an arm around Aomine's shoulder as they deepen their kiss and Kagami feels like he's been jolted out of the reality he thought he was in and placed rudely into another; a reality where Aomine and Himuro kiss like they can't get enough of each other. A reality where something burns in the pit of Kagami's stomach, leaving him confused as to whether he wants to turn away or whether he wants attention. Even so, he can't tell who's attention he wants, he can't choose, and he's never put great thought into kissing either of them before but now, there's a voice deep at the back of his mind that demands: both.

As if to answer that voice, Aomine and Himuro pull apart, their lips shining wet with each other's spit, and turn to Kagami as one.

"Taiga," Himuro murmurs, reaching for him, and he goes without a second thought. He links his fingers with Himuro's while he lets Aomine grab him by the front of the shirt, yanking him into a hard kiss. It's nothing like the softer kiss that he gave Himuro just before, but Kagami needs this. He needs Aomine kissing him like this is a fight because that's the kind of Aomine that he understands the best. Just the same as he needs Himuro pressing up behind him, chest to Kagami's back, lips hot against the shell of his ear as he kisses it.

"We wanted you," Himuro whispers, wrapping his arms around Kagami. He slides one of his hands up underneath the hem of Kagami's shirt, over his muscled abdomen and sighs, his breath hitching. "I've wanted you."

How long? Kagami wants to ask, but Aomine is keeping his tongue occupied and it doesn't matter, in the end, as long as Himuro's lips and hands are on him right now. His mind is spinning, imagining them both in Himuro's apartment, wanting him, together.

"He's gonna explode," Aomine mutters, breaking their kiss. Kagami wants to protest, but he can feel himself overheating, and he suspects that Aomine's right. "Be gentle with him, Himuro."

Himuro, who is sucking on the sensitive skin just under Kagami's ear, pulls back with a breathy laugh. "He doesn't need me to be gentle. Do you, Taiga?"

"No," Kagami breathes, locking gazes with Aomine, like it's a dare. He already feels like he's being set on fire, and wants to know just how hot he'll burn. "Keep going."

He thinks it's fitting, that his earliest memory is of water. Maybe living beside the ocean is what shaped him to be who he is now, a boy who seems to have saltwater in his veins instead of blood, who seems better suited to swim among fish than be around other people on land. Any way he saw it, he was always meant to swim, remembering the first time his parents took him to the beach, the first time he laid his eyes on the sea, glittering in the sun and looming farther beyond what his eyes can reach. Even as a child, he had no time for the sand or any other entertainment offered by the shore.

He wanted the sea.

-

He's there with Makoto the first time he befriends the fisherman, the kindly old man giving them both some of his catch in plastic bags to take home and make dinner with. He never really spoke to the man — it's always been Makoto who made conversations flow — but he remembers the strong hands, the kind eyes.

He's there with Makoto when they tell him what had happened to the fisherman after the storm.

Neither of them really looked at the ocean the same way, after that, but the difference lay in how Haru still wanted to return to it, embracing both the life and destruction it brings.

He understands, somehow, how things can be beautiful and terrible at the same time.

-

Rin is shouting at him, his voice like an echo against the walls of Haru's heart and the blame that it was painted with, telling Haru things he knows aren't true. It's your fault, whisper the walls, you did this to him.

He shakes his head to himself. He's already conquered these demons, but he didn't do it alone.

Rin is angry (like Haru was) and it's only at himself (like Haru used to be, too.) He grabs the front of Haru's jacket as Haru tries to tell him everything, now, everything that's been pent up and screaming at him for not letting Rin know sooner, then Rin pulls his arm back and Haru catches his wrist and they fall to the ground, filthy and harried and bursting, until suddenly it stops.

And then there's saltwater on Haru's face instead of his veins and for the first time in a long time Haru's glad to be on land, submerged only under the warmth of Rin's tears.

You're here, he wants to say, but he's always been more expressive with his silence so all he does is drink Rin in, drinks in the terror and beauty he brings, and Haru feels the way he feels when he's looking at the sea.
