Bonus Round 2: Tic-Tac-Toe

Tic-Tac-Toe

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Get three in a row! That's the goal of this bonus round. Inspired by a fanwork event type called kink bingo, this round encourages you to create and fill out themed prompt cards.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. There's a lot of text here, but if you read carefully and follow the instructions step by step, you will be okay.

RULES
Please refer to the first comment thread of this post for an example of how this round works.

PROMPTING

  1. Select a ship to create your prompt card about. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Haruki & Kazuma). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Haruki/Kazuma). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!

  2. Visit this card generator.
    • Here is a visual guide to using it.
    • The large text box is where you can list prompts if you have your own ideas. Please list at least 9 prompts; you can list more if you want. (The generator says you need at least 24, but it's lying.) Single words or short phrases are better than sentences.
    • Otherwise, you can use the dropdown menu found right below it. Note: some of these prompts lists are NSFW. (NSFW prompts are a-ok as long as you tag for it.) If you don't like some of the options that appear in a prompt list, you can delete them.
    • Text prompts only, please. Also, each card square must be unique—don't list the same prompt 9 times.
    • In "Configuration Options," make sure you select 3x3 and (Normal prompt). This is the most important step!
    • Leave the tic-tac-toe card with its default colors, so everyone can read it clearly.
    • Click the "Create a bingo card" button.
    • Scroll down to see the card that was created for you. If you don't like the prompts it picked, you can reroll by clicking "Create a bingo card" again.
    • When you're satisfied, scroll further down the page until you see a textarea box full of HTML.
  3. Copy and paste the HTML from the box and into the body of your prompt comment, then post!

FILLING

Fill prompts by selecting an individual square to create fanwork for, then leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work. (Optional:) If you can fill three squares from a prompt in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line, you get a tic-tac-toe (and an additional point bonus)! You can also just fill prompts as you please and get standard points.
  • Prompt squares are labeled as follows:
    A1 B1 C1
    A2 B2 C2
    A3 B3 C3
  • If you're trying for tic-tac-toe, you cannot combine squares into one fill. If your fill can satisfy multiple squares, pick the most relevant square: e.g., one square is sailing and another is pirates and you make a fill about pirates sailing, it's mostly pirates so put down the pirates square.
  • Each fill must stand alone as an individual piece, but all your fills can slot into a larger universe if you'd like.
  • You cannot fill a prompt square more than once, but you can fill every square on a tic tac toe card if you want to.
  • You cannot work with your teammates to get a tic-tac-toe. Only individually achieved tic-tac-toes get the bonus.
  • Multiple people can fill the same prompt square. You cannot "block" others from getting tic-tac-toe.
  • Remember to also follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points for each tic-tac-toe card (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each
Tic-tac-toe Bonus: 2 points each for the first 12 achieved by your team

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

This prompt was tailor-made for me, and I feel incredibly baited, even though I know that wasn't the intent.

***

Imaizumi flinched under Kinjou's touch, moaning softly as the sudden movement pulled on seized up muscles.

"Relax," Kinjou said, though he knew no amount of relaxation would do much for Imaizumi's current state. They were the last two left in Younan's tent at the end of a multi-day race. Imaizumi had ridden harder than Kinjou had ever seen him ride before to pull him to a victory against Fukutomi, Shinkai, and Meisou.

After the race, Kinjou had found Imaizumi throwing up in the dirt behind their tent. He wasn't surprised necessarily, but he did sigh and wonder when Imaizumi would ever learn to listen to his own limits (he wasn't holding his breath for that, not after so many years, but one could hope). He had put a hand on Imaizumi's back, handed him a sports drink, and waited for Imaizumi's body to finish rebelling, but when Imaizumi had tried to stand, his muscles had seized up so badly from dehydration and fatigue that he could barely move, and Kinjou had ended up half-carrying him back to their tent.

He had ordered Arakita to bring the rest of the team back to the hotel which Arakita had grumbled about, of course, but obeyed in the end. And then Kinjou had begun what he knew would be the long process of trying to coax the worst of the spasms out of Imaizumi's legs so that he could at least make it back to the hotel (and hopefully a long soak in a hot bath).

Kinjou dug his elbow into another knot, and Imaizumi hissed, digging the hels of his hands into his temples as he stared at the tent roof.

"Bear with it," Kinjou said. "You want to be able to move tomorrow." He knew his own knee was rapidly approaching a similar condition, but he ignored it. He'd get Arakita to work on it later; for now, his priority was getting Imaizumi moving again.

"You rode well today," he said as he worked his way down the tight band of Imaizumi's thigh.

"I messed up the timing shifting gears coming off of the hill," Imaizumi replied. "And then I slipped on the second curve—"

"You rode well," Kinjou repeated. Imaizumi had grown a lot since Kinjou had first met him, but he was still prone to spiraling into doubt and overly harsh self-criticism when left to his own devices. "That was the strongest I've ever seen you, and we won. Try standing up now. Slowly."

Imaizumi took the hand Kinjou offered and pulled himself up. He still seemed a bit shaky to Kinjou's eye, but at least he was moving.

"Drink this on the way back," Kinjou ordered, handing him another bottle of sports drink.

Yachi is the one to suggest a sleepover at her place the night before they officially start their third year at Karasuno. They had already inherited the team weeks prior, after their senpai had had to retire with the end of the season, but Yachi is firm on her stance that they have to celebrate together, to spend a last night in one another’s company before school, entrance exams, and the Interhigh eat up all their time.

Yachi’s mother puts up a token resistance, bemused at the idea of four boys spending the night with her daughter while she’s away for business, but she’s never really been a traditional woman, either, and she knows Yachi’s friends well enough to know they won’t let one of their own get away with any shenanigans. So the boys are invited, and show up at the apartment in pairs, each with his overnight bag and something to sleep on.

They spread out in the living room, their futons and sleeping bags arranged less in a row and more in a pile, with three boxes of pizza in the middle to accommodate not only individual preferences but also voracious appetites.

“I was thinking we could put on a movie, even though we’ll probably just talk over it,” Yachi says once her guests are settled. Tsukishima swats Hinata’s hand when he tries to reach for the food before she’s done talking. “Does anyone have a suggestion?”

“Jurassic Park,” Yamaguchi offers, grinning at the dirty look Tsukishima throws his way. “Oh wait, Tsukki, you have that one memorized, right? Maybe you could act it out for us.”

“I’ll bite you, Yamaguchi. You’ll be the first to die.”

“What about a Ghibli movie?” Hinata says, sitting up from where he’d been lying on his stomach. “Oh, oh! We should change into our pajamas first!”

“That’s dumb.”

“No, you’re dumb, Bakageyama, you’ve never even been to a sleepover until high school so how would you know? Pajamas are slumber party etiquette!”

“Wow, Hinata,” Tsukishima drawls. “That’s a big word for you, congratulations.”

Hinata sticks his tongue out. “Yeah, no thanks to you because you’re the worst tutor on the planet.”

Tsukishima shrugs, entirely unfazed. Yamaguchi turns to Yachi, “You’re our host, Yacchan, what do you think?”

She looks around the room, feeling the warmth in her chest bloom just from being around them. “Pajamas and Ghibli are perfect,” she agrees, inciting Hinata to ‘whoop’ with cheer. “I’ll go change inside, and you guys narrow it down to which movie, okay?”

Hinata salutes her. “Yes, ma’am!”

--

When she returns to the living room, Yachi’s wearing a cream colored nightgown with black leggings underneath, and the boys are in two camps.

“We’re watching Laputa,” Kageyama grouches.

Kiki,” Hinata huffs in return.

“We’ve all seen Kiki’s Delivery service a hundred times before,” Tsukishima counters.

“Because it’s a good movie,” Yamaguchi counters. “Laputa is pretty boring.”

“It has pirates and a floating city!”

“We probably have time to watch both,” Yachi suggests, smoothing her skirt down beneath her knees as she sits. “We can flip a coin to see who goes first,” she continues before that argument can start.

“No way! Janken, me versus Tsukishima!” Hinata declares, shifting forward to face his opponent. Tsukishima sighs, but Yachi can see the way his lip is curved up and smiles. And, when Hinata cries, “Janken pon!” Tsukshima throws down a spread palm, then gleefully covers Hinata’s curled ‘rock’ fist with his ‘paper’.

“Boo,” Yamaguchi says, wilting a bit. “I was hoping Laputa would help me get to sleep.” Beside him, Hinata laughs and rests his head on Yamaguchi’s shoulder. Tsukishima goes to put the DVD in, and Kageyama is making himself comfortable, fluffing a pillow and putting it behind him. When they all settle down, Yachi opens up the pizza boxes and invites them to dig in.

Over the course of the evening, everyone moves closer together as if by the pull of invisible magnets. Kageyama falls asleep first, with his head in Yamaguchi’s lap, and Hinata has his arm around Yachi’s waist. Tsukishima is a little more subtle, so Yachi doubts anyone realizes he’s got his pinkie finger linked with hers.

To the credits music of Kiki’s Delivery Service, she leans her head on Tsukishima’s arm and sighs contently, happy to be home.

Verbal communication had never really been a strong suit of their relationship. Yuuri wasn’t particularly sure if that was the result of relying on a mutual second language, or if it was just how his personality and Viktor’s came together — Viktor had lived impulsively for years, always aiming to surprise people, and as far as Yuuri knew he was never as close to anyone as he was to Makkachin, who couldn’t exactly talk back. As for Yuuri himself, years of an inferiority complex and Japanese politeness had coached him to keep his emotions close to his chest.

So maybe it wasn’t a surprise that their first kiss and first fight happened on the same day, a day Yuuri will never forget for many reasons, maybe most importantly because of how he stood up for himself.

“Just have more faith than I do that I´ll win! You don´t have to say anything, just stand by me!”

He was reliving the memory as he lounged in bed, on a rare day when he awoke before Viktor and could luxuriate in his fiancé’s warm and soothing presence. There was still some mortification in his gut that rose when he remembered how ugly he’d cried in front of Viktor that day, but the embarrassment was eased when he reached out and held Viktor’s hand, solid evidence that even at his worst Yuuri hadn’t been bad enough to send Viktor running for the hills.

There were a few more moments he remembered, when they’d communicated the depth of their affections for one another with words, but the way he had felt in those moments meant significantly more to him than the words that they’d said. He ran his thumb back and forth in the space between Viktor’s thumb and forefinger, gazing at his sleeping partner’s idyllic beauty, until Viktor moaned softly in his sleep and his eyelids slowly lifted.

“Mmmm,” he hummed. “Ohayou, Yuuri.”

Yuuri smiled, partially because of the thick accent Viktor couldn’t seem to shake off in Japanese, but mostly because of Viktor’s dedication to speaking the language anyways. When Yuuri had first moved to Saint Petersburg, Viktor insisted on interjecting his speech with as much Japanese as possible, because he didn’t want Yuuri feeling homesick, even though all logic said he should have been trying to help Yuuri acclimate to Russian.

Dobraye ootro, Viktor,” he murmured back, voice still thick with sleep.

“You’re up early today,” Viktor grinned, and started to move his arm before he stopped mid-gesture. “Wait, are you holding my hand?”

“Yes.”

He laughed, looking radiant to Yuuri even with half of his face smushed into a pillow. “Any reason in particular?”

“No, not really. I felt like it. Do you mind?”

“Of course not. I just want to know what I did to earn this blessing.”

Yuuri laughed too, in spite of himself as he prodded Viktor’s shoulder with his free hand. “It’s not a blessing. I’m just kind of caressing you.”

“Exactly.” Viktor winked, causing Yuuri to laugh again. “What are you doing awake so early?”

“I was just thinking…”

“Oh? What about?”

“Us.”

Viktor hummed. “I like that subject. Thoughts?”

“Well,” Yuuri started slowly, savoring the way Viktor was gazing at him with complete attention. “I realized there’s still something important I’ve never told you.”

If possible, Viktor looked even more interested; his eyes widened and nearly sparkled, and his lips puckered into a soft “oh” when he gasped. More than interested, or attentive, Yuuri would call the look ‘enraptured’. He gently squeezed Viktor’s fingers, and when he shifted more towards him, Viktor readily wrapped his free arm around Yuuri’s face. “What is it?” He whispered between them.

Eager to watch the reaction bloom across Viktor’s face, Yuuri gently tucked some of Viktor’s long bangs behind his ear and murmured, “I love you, Vitya.”

Viktor didn’t disappoint. His eyes momentarily went wide, searching Yuuri’s expression, but just as quickly they were soft under his brows. He made a little noise, the one Yuuri heard so often when he caught his fiancé watching videos of puppies; the noise he made whenever he was thoroughly speechless with delight.

The best part of all was his blush. Despite his complexion, it was rare for Viktor to blush; it was hard to catch him off guard. So whenever Yuuri managed to tease one out, he treasured it like sweet ambrosia.

“Have I really gone this long without hearing you say that…?” Viktor wondered. “How did I survive? Say it again, Yuuri?”

“I love you.”

“Say it in Japanese!”

A-aishiteru.” Yuuri stammered, a little caught off guard by the request and his own extreme reaction to it. But then, there was no way Viktor knew how intense that particular ‘love’ was.

“Say it one more time, please?”

“No.”

“No?” Viktor echoed in a tiny voice.

“No,” Yuuri added quickly, “I won’t say it again until you do!”

Viktor’s expression pulled a complete 180, and he was back to being elated. He brushed his nose along Yuuri’s cheek, and then crooned by his ear, “I am in love with you, Yuuri.”

Yuuri felt heat flood his face, and he turned his head in tandem with Viktor so that they could do what they did best and say it once more without the need for words.

The realization that he’d made a colossal mistake was almost instant.

But he couldn’t back out, not now, not when -- anyway, what was the point? Taiga was gone, he’d left almost as soon as they’d stopped talking. He’d taken some of his things and went, muttering something about crashing at Kuroko’s place.

When Daiki returned home from work the next day, the apartment he’d shared with Taiga seemed bare, something essential having been stripped away.

Daiki didn’t dwell on that emptiness, however. He began to colonize his own space, letting his clothes lay where they dropped, scattering around the porn that he’d kept hidden when Taiga was still here. He ate takeout, mostly, and soon there were empty cartons of food everywhere.

So when Kuroko came to his door several weeks later with the news that Taiga had gone to America again, he was confronted with the results of Daiki’s deterioration.

“Aomine-kun,” he said solemnly, his eyes wide, “you’re living like a pig.”

“Shut up, Tetsu,” Daiki said, pulling him inside the apartment and closing the door. The way Kuroko was sniffing the air and making faces was frankly offensive. Daiki lived here and he could attest that it wasn’t that bad.

“You may remember what I said when you and Kagami-kun decided to be romantically involved,” Kuroko said, delicately stepping over a discarded pair of jeans -- it had been Taiga’s, originally, but Daiki had made it his own. “I was not exaggerating when I said that I would be unmerciful if you should ever hurt him.”

“You always take his side,” Daiki said, aware of how whiny he sounded, even to his own ears. “Even though you’ve known me longer.”

“It’s because I’ve known you longer than I know what heights and lows you’re capable of,” Kuroko said, aiming his piercing stare directly at Daiki.

“He was cheating on me,” Daiki said, bluntly.

“No.”

Daiki bristled at the cool dismissal of Kuroko’s words.

“I know you like to interfere, Tetsu, but I know what I saw. I don’t ask for a lot, but if I can’t have loyalty than I didn’t what anything else.”

“Aomine-kun... “ Kuroko sighed. “Take a look at the bottom left hand corner of your sock drawer. Kagami-kun was speaking of that to his brother, not anything else or with anyone else.”

*

Kuroko had long gone, but Daiki waited until the next morning before he went digging in his sock drawer. He wouldn’t find anything, he knew. It was dumb that he was even looking.

“What the fuck am I even looking for?” he muttered to himself, throwing the socks back where they were before. As he did so, he saw a small jewelry box tumble out of one of his tube socks. He snatched it up, like like someone else would snoop in and take it before he had the chance.

Inside was a pair of rings, engagement rings with his and Taiga’s names engraved on them. Daiki’s heart squeezed in his chest as he looked at the rings and contemplated, for the first time, the magnitude of his loss.

*

He tried to call Taiga but the call could not be completed. Taiga had blocked him.

*

He didn’t think about it. He went to the gym. Trained like crazy. Played in his games, when to his part-time job afterwards and every second of the day, he thought about how stupid he had been. His game suffered for it, and he spilled drinks on paying customers and was rude to them instead of apologetic. He couldn’t be fired from this job, at least, since his parents owned the bar. He was there to get involved with the business, to learn by doing. But as far as he was concerned, all he had learned was that he’d rather leave it up to the managers, and that if he ever heard another person’s sob story over spilled liquor, it would be too soon.

Still, it wasn’t all bad. One evening both Kise and Satsuki appeared at the bar.

“Are you two going to scream at me for being a dumbass?” Daiki said suspiciously.

“Oh, Dai-chan, you know screaming isn’t my style,” Satsuki said. “Besides, I’m sure Tetsu-kun did a wonderful job already!”

“I’m just sad that I lost to Murasakibara over how long you’d last,” Kise said with a pout. “If you’d only hung on a little longer, Aominecchi!”

“I think I preferred the screaming,” Daiki said drily.

But neither Satsuki nor Kise mentioned Taiga again. They were both eager to talk about their own burgeoning careers, and, for once, Daiki was glad to listen about the exciting worlds of international modeling and international sports management, and forget his own problems. It was only when the shift supervisor yelled at him for neglecting the other customers that he had to face reality again.

*

He called Taiga’s number and got a busy signal.

*

It was four months on and he was drunk enough to feel reckless that he called Taiga for the last time. It was going to be the last time, he promised himself. There was nothing for it but to move on. It was noon here, so it would be night in Los Angeles. He was sure Taiga wouldn’t pick up, so he didn’t have anything ready when he heard a familiar hello on the other end of the line.

“Ah, it’s me,” Daiki said, feeling incredibly stupid.

There was long enough silence that he thought Taiga had hung up. But at last Taiga sighed and said, “What do you want, Aomine?”

Ouch. Daiki cleared his throat. “Okay, I was a dick and I was wrong. I’m sorry I hurt you and I understand that you can’t see me again. Just -- sorry.”

“Did Kuroko put you up to this?”

“Oh, yeah, Kuroko has his thumb up my ass and is making my mouth move.”

“... Uh?”

“No, you dumbass. I haven’t seen him for months. Not since you left. He blames me for it.”

“That’s fine, isn’t it? Since it is your fault.”

“Okay, okay, it’s my fault. I admit it. I said I was sorry. When are you coming back?”

“... Daiki,” Taiga said, sounding regretful for the first time. “I signed a contract. I can’t go back to Japan until the season is over, and even then, I can’t stay.”

“Oh.” Daiki felt, stronger than ever, the reality of their separation. There were too many miles between them and he felt sick with loneliness and regret. “That’s fine. It’s not like I miss you or anything. I’m not a girl.”

“You’re such a fucking jerk,” Taiga said with a snort. “I don’t miss you either. My apartment in LA smells a lot better without you stinking up the place.”

“Fuck whatever Kuroko told you, I hire a cleaner to come in every week.”

“Kuroko didn’t tell me anything. Oh God, Daiki, you were so heartbroken that you couldn’t even clean after yourself?”

“I can’t even do it normally,” Daiki said.

Taiga laughed before he suddenly sucked in his breath. “Shit, I need to go to bed. I took a sleeping pill, I have a game tomorrow.”

They said their goodbyes, but it didn’t feel final at all.

*

As soon as Daiki got off the phone with Taiga, he called Satsuki to beg her for a favor.

BUT. CANNIBALISM REQUIRES LESS RESEARCH. XDD

When Yukimura falls ill, it's Sanada who holds the team together. As everyone else is still reeling from the shock, he digs deeper, grounds himself, and pulls Yanagi aside to create a skeleton of a training schedule that will hold the team through until they have the bandwidth to do a more thorough job.

Sanada is the first to visit Yukimura in the hospital, reporting back to the team every day until Yukimura is allowed more visitors. Niou is the second to visit; he goes with Sanada, and he's not sure which is worse: Yukimura trapped in his own body and unable even to speak, or Sanada staring blankly past him as he reports on the day in a carefully controlled monotone that nevertheless always sounds just on the verge of breaking.

Sanada has always been the grounding anchor of their team, but he can burn with a powerful fire when pushed. Niou sees that fire now, but sharp-edged and volatile as its anchor wavers. He pulls in Yanagi to help manage Akaya; their youngest regular butts heads with Sanada regularly, but Niou doesn't want to risk that now, not with Akaya's temper lashing out more than ever with Yukimura gone, and with Sanada not his normal self.

As the days stretch into weeks, the team settles into a tentative new sense of normality, but the weight of their captain's illness continues to weigh on them. It's Sanada who shoulders the brunt o f the weight, and Niou can see it slowly wearing away at him. Niou offers to share some of the burden, to handle more of the practice scheduling or take over some of the hospital visits, but Sanada refuses to give up what he sees as his duty.

Niou continues to watch, and worry, but it's not until nearly six weeks after Yukimura's collapse that he feels the first wave of true fear at the current state of things. Yagyuu pulls him aside after practice, not for a quick kiss in the shadows like normal, but to press a scrap of paper into his hand.

"Sanada dropped this," he says stiffly.

Niou glances at the page and understands Yagyuu's concern. Written in Sanada's familiar, tight hand is his schedule, and it's not a schedule Niou would want to keep for even one day; he's not sure how Sanada has been managing for as long as he has. Yagyuu meets his eyes, and he sees the same conclusion: they're running out of time.

Sometimes in the dead of night, when worry for Sanada and the rest of the team keeps him up, he finds himself wishing Yukimura would die if he's not going to recover. He feels guilty the minute he catches himself on that train of thought and shoves it far away, but even though he hates himself for even considering it, he can't help but think that if Yukimura were to die, then at least they would all be able to grieve together and start to move on. There's a part of him that he doesn't want to acknowledge that says even that would be better than the limbo they've been stuck in for weeks now with no end in sight.

Niou sees how dangerously low Sanada's reserves are burning, and everyone knows that even the strongest fire can only burn for so long before there is nothing left but ashes. If Yukimura's condition doesn't change soon, for better or for worse, then Rikkai is going to lose their vice-captain too.

This comment makes me so, so happy! The prompts initially had me very tempted, and when I reread their wikia pages and was reminded of the jersey swapping, I thought it would be a great jumping off point for getting to the "bare skin" part of this prompt :) I have a feeling they are just so blah about it and I actually love them for that. It's such a cute thing for them to do??

Ending fics can sometimes be the hardest part for me, but these two memelords make the decision very easy this time lol

Again, I'm so sossososo happy you enjoy this!!

one of the great things about team grandstand is that you're not doing it for points, so you can write whatever you want, whenever you want! for example, i already started writing, in my head, the au where the original third years are around and one of them (not chris) has somehow roped miyuki into participating...

if such a fic were to appear, would you be interested in any of the following characters? (miyuki is there, and sawamura is trying to make a team with himself and the tire...):

- chris
- haruichi
- jun
- kuramochi
- ryousuke
- tetsu
- tanba
