Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Quotes

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

An oldie but a goodie—in this round, we draw inspiration from famous words said by other people.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." -Friedrich Nietzsche
    • The quote can come from almost anything—famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, etc.— but please don't quote personal conversations you've had or overheard.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.

Reading the first part of this made me feel absolutely breathless, like the air was trapped in my lungs as I raced down that list of endearments and it was brilliant, because i didn't remember to inhale until I hit the first period. And the rest of this felt like a push and pull between affection and a carefully crafted truth, and it was delightful to read. The last paragraph was really lovely, the imagery still makes me linger over your words and I adore that at the end it comes back to them, tangled up. Thanks so much for sharing!

I was so excited to see that you left Kiyoko/Yachi tagged and also Nothing terrible happens here, it made me grin like a loon before I even started reading. <3

This was an absolute delight to read! I adored the Life and Death/Destruction(?) set-up among the deities, particularly because they were paired and not pitted against each other; the fact that they had that kind of immortal companionship was lovely to think about, and Imayoshi and Hanamiya's interacts felt so soft here, it was lovely. I also laughed a little at how nonchalantly Hanamiya talked about disaster, and panicked a lot when he was like "maybe even kill them" and I was like "but they said nothing terrible happens here which means offscreen terrible could happen" and I was glad when they went back to cuddling OTL

Thank you for sharing! <3

ALDKJA; This was lovely, I was so excited to see Kimishita Atsushi/Ooshiba Kiichi and-- Kimishita hates absolutely everyone in the world. made me stutter when I first read this, because it's sharp and Ooshiba is so certain of where he fits in, abrasively, and Kimishita and the kiss and the ending, I have no words except that it made me flail a lot, because I was so certain it was going to be a violent kiss, but you wrote a chaste one and it hit so much harder. Thank you for sharing! <3

Your writing always finds me holding my breath, as I fall through your words, like a race I'm having against myself where I reach the end and wonder if I've been breathing. It works so well for this ship, where everything is this push and pull that's sharp and feels like the balance could tip the moment you pause to take a breather-- and the love/resentment pieces are so fast, because you show that there's weight to both sides, and neither of these characters are vulnerable enough to give over everything while being vulnerable enough to want to be close. It's such a lovely, twisted relationship, and thank you so much for sharing!

spy AU featuring Hollywood rules

***
There were two things you needed to know about Ebumi Masaru: he was fast as hell, and he was vicious. Two things that made him an effective agent for hit-and-run missions. They also made him a terrible coworker.

You’ll be meeting your new Control today. He’s young, but shows a lot of promise. Very level-headed, with good instincts.

Try not to break this one, will you? I can’t send you out in the field without a Control.

Matsu

Ebumi scowled at the email. It wasn’t his fault the last guy was so damn fragile. Hell, Ebumi had been trying to give him safety tips (after smashing his face in, Matsuo pointed out).

He missed Ise, but Ise had decided to move up to agent status himself, and was doing pretty well. Ebumi didn’t want to begrudge him happiness there, but he couldn’t shake the idea that this job had been way more fun with Ise in his ear, laughing at his jokes and offering the most outrageous escape routes available.

Well, time to meet the new guy.

“Oharano Etsugo,” the new guy introduced himself. “I’ll be your new Control.”

Ebumi didn’t know it was even possible to look that bored. The new guy—Oharano—had the kind of face and figure that the honeypot division would kill for, but that look, like he was disappointed with everything life had to offer, ruined it.

Overenthusiasm was irritating; this was worse. He sneered.

“I have a mission tomorrow night,” he said, leaving out any helpful information. Let the new guy figure it out for himself. “Think you’ll be ready?”

Oharano met his gaze without flinching.

“Yes,” he replied coolly. He made a perfunctory bow and left.

Ebumi couldn’t remember the last time he wanted to hit someone so much.

This was exactly the kind of mission Ebumi loved. The target was heavily guarded, and he had a time window of thirty minutes to get in and out. His blood hummed with anticipation.

This was going to be fun.

“Ready?” Oharano’s voice said in his ear. Ebumi grimaced. Maybe tonight wouldn’t be so fun, after all, if he was stuck with this fun-sucking icicle.

“Always,” he snarled.

“Good. The target is on the fifty-first floor. I estimate five guards, with at least ten on call. Once in position, you should take no longer than twenty minutes to disarm the guards and acquire the target.”
Ebumi privately resolved to be done in ten. That would teach Oharano, maybe impress him into showing some kind of emotion.

“Yeah, yeah,” he muttered. “Got it.”

“Good,” Oharano said again. “And Ebumi?”

“What?”

“If things go wrong, I hope you’ll follow my instructions.”

Ebumi barked out a derisive laugh and went to move into position.

Apparently, some rival agency had also decided that tonight would be a good time to go for the same target. The mission was blown, and the estimated fifteen guards had somehow doubled, sending the room into thirty-two people and one agitated Pomeranian’s worth of chaos.

“Fuck!” Ebumi shouted, elbowing a guard in the face. “Isn’t it your job to figure out if this kind of shit is going to happen, Control?” He could see the other agent making a move for the dog, and he threw himself forward, squeezing past two burly guards.

“Do you have the dog?” Control’s voice was tight, and Ebumi felt a stab of satisfaction before he remembered that, no, actually, this was not a good time for Control to be stressed out.

“Give me a second,” he said. He grabbed the other agent by the neck and slammed their head against the table. They went limp, hand only a few inches away from the dog. The target. It yelped as Ebumi grabbed it around the middle and tucked it close. “Right, target acquired. Now get me the fuck out of here.”

“There are five guards between you and the door,” Control said. “That way is easier, but it’ll take you longer to get out of the building, and the target’s owner is on his way.”

“All right, what’s Plan B? You guys always have a Plan B,” Ebumi muttered, pulling a knife. “You guys usually have a Plan X, so come on.”

“There are seven guards between you and the window,” Control said. Ebumi waited. No further information came.

“Seriously?” He kicked out a guy’s knee and drove his knife into another’s shoulder. The dog was really cramping his style, but the agency needed it alive.

“It’s the fastest way out of the building,” replied Control. He sounded amused. Fucker. “I have a helicopter waiting. Unless you’d rather take the easy way out?”

Ebumi laughed. He couldn’t tell if he was pissed off or impressed. Probably it was both.

“You’re an asshole, aren’t you?” he asked. He hoped Oharano couldn’t see him smiling. It was probably the mission, anyway.

“There’s no need to be rude, Ebumi,” Oharano chastised. “Now move.”

Ebumi laughed again and fought through the remaining men to the window. Sure enough, there was a helicopter outside, a few floors down.

“I’m gonna kick your ass when I get back,” he promised, looking around for something to break the window with. He picked up a gun from one of the guards and shattered the pane in front of him.

“Just go,” Oharano said.

Ebumi wrapped his arms around the dog and jumped.

Going for a quiet melancholy instead.

***

There are a few constants in Miyahara's life: the box of hairties she keeps by her bedside, how her pencil sharpener is always worn down, and Manami Sangaku.
Manami is a ghost behind her bedroom window. He always looks tired, and the glow of his game consoles illuminates his eyes late at night. She's heard from her parents that he's sick somehow, but she can't pronounce the name of his disease.
"I'm tired of games," he says, having finished his second new one in a week.
"How about a book?" she asks, passing him a picture book she got from the library. He flips through the pages, but his jaw tightens when he sees the mouse family climb up their big treehouse and huddle together to watch the moon. Manami passes the book back, and his arm wobbles as he stretches across the way between their windows. "I don't think it's for me."
Then she shows him how to ride a bike, and his eyes glow for the first time. He turns his body into the wind, and trades his sickness for a dream.
She outgrows three pairs of glasses by the time she gets into high school where she realizes she's in love. An accident sends her current pair flying down the staircase, and when she gets her fourth pair, she knows that her feelings will never go anywhere.
--
Manami somehow made it into university, where he's going to join the bike club. No surprise there. He said he's going to try for biking as a profession, but she knows he's going to spend time volunteering on the mountains in his free time.
She managed to snag him on one of their rare coinciding breaks, and the grass tickles her neck. It's a cloudy, overcast day, but the weather's warm. They don't need to go to a cafe; they've known each other for long enough.
"University's coming up."
"Mmhm," he says, looking through the wings of a dragonfly perched on his finger.
"I'm going to Todai."
Even if he doesn't mean to, looking at her with that repressed melancholy will make her crumble. She sucks in a deep breath, and fills her body with steel.
He turns back to the clouds. "Congratulations, Iinchou. You'll do great."
Tokyo is very far from Hakone. There's no way she can continue to check up on Manami, not when she has her own life and her own responsibilities. Still, she worries that Manami might end up floating in the clouds like a lost balloon.
"Do you think you'll be okay?"
He doesn't answer her for a bit. "Probably."
She doesn't see Manami for the rest of the week.
--
Miyahara lined the moving boxes with bubble wrap and old felt, and labeled each one so she can find everything once she starts unpacking. There's two boxes still in the house, but she's stopped by the whizz of gears and wheels. She yelps as Manami's bike stops just short of running her over.
"I made it," he has the same easy smile.
"Sangaku! You nearly ran me over!"
"Sorry." He leans close, blinking in her personal space. "You let your hair down."
She fingers the long ends that go past her elbows. "I needed a change."
"You look nice." He thrusts a fist, with a ball chain dangling between his thumb. "I got you a gift."
It's a small charm made of colored wire in the shape of a bike. There are oil stains across the wheels, probably where Manami held it tightly.
"You know I don't like bikes."
"I know. But I do."
"Yes, you do," and she lets him drop it into her palm. It's cool against her fingers, and she pauses before she asks, "Sangaku, do you think you can make it?"
The wind rustles the map she has tucked under the car wiper. "I think so."
"You know they won't you onto the university team if you don't keep your grades up."
Manami laughs, and rubs at the back of his neck. His hair is long enough to brush his shoulders now.
"It'll get sticky in the summer," she takes a hairtie off her wrist, and hands it to Manami. "You should tie your hair up."
His hair isn't long enough to make a dramatic ponytail, just enough to resemble the wing of a short bird's. "You're always so smart."
They've been around each other for so long, she doesn't remember when they haven't been shades in each other's lives.
"Take care of yourself," she says, squeezing the charm in her palm.
"Don't get mad at me if I forget to do my homework."
Miyahara sighs. Some things never change. Manami will always be drifting in the clouds, and he'll always be hiding in the mountains in his free time. He'll always be an unexplainable mystery. He'll always be her childhood friend, even if it isn't their childhood anymore.
He'll miss her, and she'll miss him.
"Good luck, Iinchou."
"You too, Sangaku."

The first time Masako ever heard about Alex Garcia, it was a badly-translated article on the WNBA her teammates passed around the locker room. A quite, probably mangled, but with the basic gist of “We play harder than the men in worse facilities; the least they can do is give us bigger basketballs.”

Masako is quite inclined to agree; it’s something she often thinks but never wants to voice when she’s hanging out with her friends from the men’s team, something they don’t really seem to get. Yes, they have the same national facilities, but the opportunities outside of officially-sanctioned tournaments for women are pitiful. If you can get paid to play somewhere, it’s for a tiny fraction of what a man would be played who’s at a similar level. The top women’s leagues have fewer teams than the top men’s leagues; the shot in the dark is even less accurate; the margins for error are nonexistent. And then there’s getting used to playing with a different-sized ball, being good enough for men’s tournaments at a younger age and then switching to the smaller ball, having it feel awkward and too light in your hands, adjusting your throw. It’s not as much of an inconvenience as it could be; it’s really just another item on a long list but everything counts; every little bit that they can muscle in is a victory that could maybe lead to something else down the road, not a victory for them but for the next generation, the one after, the one after that, while the men can grow things in half a generation.

When Masako first meets Alex, she thinks she’s heard of her somewhere; it’s not until later she remembers the article, the quote, the way it matches with the determination, hard and light and strong as stainless steel in Alex’s eyes, behind her glasses. She watches Alex play and realizes she’s playing with a men’s regulation size basketball, not surprising, the same size as the only ones Masako’s used since she’d started coaching high school boys.

Masako asks Alex, and she laughs. “Maybe not such a wise thing to say at the time. They kept saying I wasn’t grateful for the opportunity I’d been given. Like if I’d wanted a playing career I should shut up and take the scraps.”

The laugh is bitter; she doesn’t have to say any more. Masako knows the feeling all too well, the frustration, the self-doubt, the maybe I should be grateful, the brutality of basketball slamming the door on every woman but for a few you could count on an injured hand. She wraps her arms around Alex’s waist; neither of them needs assurance of how much they’re worth, not at this point; their wounds have long since healed. But bitterness remains, a tidal pool far ashore. Alex squeezes Masako’s hand, the hands that are just as comfortable with this as they are receiving a pass that’s right on target.

If there was ever any doubt which way Imayoshi was going (that is, if he believes in an afterlife, which is debatable at best) this is what seals the deal. True, he hadn’t tried enough in middle school; he’d said things, done things, in high school; he’s made mistakes and he’s had regrets. That’s not enough to send him to hell on its own, or if it is, then there’s going to be no one in heaven anyway, so who gives a damn.

He could have taken the coward’s way out, quit basketball because of the physical strain and lack of financial reward awaiting him and become the boring sort of salaryman who smokes on the terrace and looks like he’s hiding something but it’s only ever that he’s behind on his credit card bill or something, the boring kind of shameful secret. At least, that’s what he jokes about; it probably never would have been enough for him, but he could have had it if he’d let it happen to him, if he’d tried for it at all.

That would have landed him in hell; Imayoshi’s no fool. He’s not going to search back on the twisting road of his life to find out where the sweet little boy he’d once been (ha!) had gone wrong, turned out rotten to the core. People like to simplify it, call one thing or another the turning point, but there were so many along the way that there isn’t one distinguishing, definitive; it’s everything at once. Maybe a lot of those things had had to do with Hanamiya but, well. Now it certainly does.

He’s no wishy-washy waffler; this is the path he’s on and he’s going to commit to hell cheerfully, with a long kiss on Hanamiya’s mouth, something he’s going to enjoy. What’s the use in pointless repenting when you don’t mean much of it anyway? What’s the use in an empty apology to an entity that may not exist? Especially when he plans on doing so much more in the future, the knife gripped in his hands, twisting with a surety that Hanamiya doesn’t have. He’s troubled, a blustery dark, a gale force; Imayoshi’s a much simpler man; the world is as it is. There’s no use complicating it when there are tasks to complete, when the sooner they finish the sooner it’s just them, the sooner they can forget (or not) the acts they commit and condone, the sooner they can enjoy the hell they’re headed to together.

It’s been a long time since the first time Tatsuya tried to let Taiga go, much less long than when he’d realized that he just can’t, not really. He can verbally loosen any bonds he thinks are there, any way he’s holding Taiga back, any way that Taiga sees. But Taiga never sees them; if they’re holding him he tears right through before he notices them cutting his skin, leaving behind only Tatsuya’s thoughts chained up, his image of Taiga that he’s not able to let go of. Taiga, young, looking at Taiga like he’d just given him the key to a new dimension; Taiga, young and trusting; Taiga, older and betrayed; Taiga, taller than him by far and Tatsuya has to almost crane his neck, asking Tatsuya to kiss him and Tatsuya saying yes; Taiga, asleep next to Tatsuya, the air conditioner broken and the heat wave unbroken outside, the dry heat they’d grown up in together but forgotten.

And then there is Taiga, on the court now, so sure of his own abilities as only he has the right to be, as only he can be. A dunk, a block, a steal, maybe three or four seconds on the shot clock, that insane vertical (the ridiculous deep jumper he’s developed out of nowhere, maybe just because he fucking can), the stat lines people have almost stopped being impressed by because Taiga’s just that good no one is even surprised by the gaudy numbers, the deep playoff runs, the way he hauls his decent squad to a top seed in the east over better-selected, better-developed teams.

It hurts not manning him, but Tatsuya’s not big enough; he’s not strong enough. It hurts to admit is, as critical as he is of his own skills. It hurts to say he’s not good enough to go one-on-one with Taiga in a game like this, that Taiga’s playing on a parallel plane, even without the zone or any type of special thing he has to kick down the door to; it’s more like he’s on the other side of a door that’s closed to Tatsuya, and Tatsuya’s stuck in a place with low ceilings and keeps bumping his head. Taiga is free to spread and stretch his greater size, his amazing wingspan; he could fly ten feet off the ground and stand up straight if he wanted to in the place he is.

“You’re amazing,” Tatsuya whispers, pressing kisses to the side of Taiga’s face; he doesn’t need to mention stats (they don’t talk about stats) or the Bulls’ lopsided win, the three Knicks starters Taiga had dunked on, multiple times, when he’d blown past Tatsuya with the ball, paling in comparison to when Tatsuya had gotten past him, something that had come completely from how well he knows Taiga and a little bit of luck, nothing like superior, overpowering skill.

“You’re amazing, too,” Taiga says, and for some reason Taiga believes it. Tatsuya holds on tighter.

SKINNER: [laughs] Oh, no. Patented Skinner burgers. Old family recipe.
CHALMERS: For steamed hams.
SKINNER: Yes.
CHALMERS: Yes. And you call them "steamed hams" despite the fact that they are obviously grilled.
SKINNER: Y-you know... one thing I sh... Excuse me for one second. [DUCKS INTO BURNING KITCHEN AND INSTANTLY REEMERGES]

thank you! this is lovely- soft and simple and melancholy. there's a great sense of simultaneous distance and closeness, and i love the line "They've been around each other for so long, she doesn't remember when they haven't been shades in each other's lives."

This is just Kuroo being an idiot, I hope you enjoy it! :D

Morisuke sighs as he looks over the training schedule for the day. It’s mostly specialized practice, one on one stuff that they need to work on, and he must be lucky, because it’s Kuroo’s turn to deal with the human disaster that Lev is. Even as Morisuke looks up to glance over the gym Lev manages to somehow overturn a cart of volleyballs and send them scattering across the whole floor, while also ending up in a tangle of his own too long limbs. He takes down Inuoka with him, too, and they land with a groan and a yell that has Morisuke shaking his head in exasperation.

By the time that Lev and the rest of the team has cleaned up and gotten into stretching, Kuroo has finally finished his captain’s duties with the coaches, and he does his best to drape himself over Morisuke to look at the clipboard in his hands. On the floor next to their feet, Kenma snorts and continues stretching half heartedly, clearly already wanting to put his time to better use. Morisuke doesn’t have to look to know that Kuroo has that goofy grin on his face that means he thinks Kenma’s being cute, even though he’s not actually doing anything.

“Get off me, you mangy cat.” Morisuke tries to shrug Kuroo off, but he’s more like a blanket than a person at this point, and he only shifts along with Morisuke’s movements. He knows that he’s doing it on purpose, and that they look more than ridiculous. Kuroo likes to do things like this, trying to see how far he can push before Morisuke lashes out. “You’ve got Lev today. Get to work already.”

Kuroo straightens up, finally, and Morisuke turns around to make sure he’s actually going to do what he’s told.

“I will face God and walk backwards into hell.” And he does, or at least, he attempts it. Gaze still firmly on Morisuke’s own, Kuroo walks backwards, a couple of steady feet before he backs into one of the stray volleyballs that Lev must have missed when cleaning up after his spill. He goes down with a squawk and a flailing of his arms before anyone can call out a warning, landing firmly on his ass before flopping backwards the rest of the way in apparent defeat.

He groans, and Morisuke walks over, nudging the volleyball pointedly back over to where Lev is, before looking down at Kuroo with his hands on his hips. “God, huh?”

Kuroo just turns even redder and tries to hide his face in his hands, and Morisuke can’t keep in his laugh, even as he offers a hand down to help Kuroo up. He’s ridiculous, but somehow the kind of ridiculous that Morisuke likes.

This is viciously wonderful! The description could take pleasure into smashing an elbow into his face, breaking those stupid glasses, breaking in his nose, hearing the rip of the cartilage was so sharp, because the fact that Hanamiya could visualize it that far-- and the fact that he has to go that far because he and Imayoshi are similar, aren't innocent enough to manipulate? It made the end so very lovely. Thank you for sharing!

This was so cute, I felt so delighted reading through this because their voices came through so clearly, and it was such a blast to see this kind of flirting that was sharp but also terribly affectionate. Thank you so much for sharing! <3
