An oldie but a goodie—in this round, we draw inspiration from famous words said by other people.

Makishima wasn’t sure where Toudou had heard about him and Tadokoro. It could have been from anyone on the team- Kinjou and Fukutomi traded polite, carefully worded emails every so often, Tadokoro and Shinkai had some sort of sprinter’s bond where they exchanged sprint times and favorite meals, and Onoda texted Manami several times a week. They were, he thought, distractedly, possibly a little too close to their rival team.

The point was, he hadn’t told Toudou, and yet Toudou knew anyway. Knew and, in all his well-meaning nosiness, had decided to ask Makishima about it.

“I’m just surprised, Maki-chan!” he exclaims. “I knew you two were friends, and Hayato says that he’s a good cyclist, but I always thought if you went for a cyclist you would go for another climber.”

Makishima grimaced, and made a non-committal noise. He really didn’t want to talk about this with Toudou. He didn’t want to talk about it with anyone; he just wanted to be with Tadokoro and for things to be simple.

“Hey, tell me, Maki-chan, what do you like most about Tadokoro?”

Unbidden, images of Tadokoro’s broad back and wide chest sprang to Makishima’s mind. Tadokoro’s arms, at least twice the size of Makishima’s own. His thighs, thick and muscular, outlined by the tight material of his cycling shorts. Tadokoro’s large, soft belly. His hands…

But saying something like that would just scandalize Toudou, who, for all his fangirls, was incredibly easy to embarrass when it came to discussion of things like attraction and sex. It might be worth it, in the short run, but Makishima knew that embarrassing Toudou would only cause more trouble.

“Uh...” There were lots of things Makishima liked about Tadokoro, he knew, but at this moment all he could think about was how big he was, and how much Makishima liked that. He wanted to climb Tadokoro like a mountain. He wanted Tadokoro to ride him like a bike. “His big…” he cast about for something to say. Smile! That was good. That was safe, and nice, and also true.

No, wait. Heart. That sounded better. Plus, it was romantic, right?

Unfortunately, these thoughts occurred more-or-less at the same time, and what came out was

“Smart.”

There was a horrible, awkward silence as Makishima and Toudou realized what he’d just said. His big smart. Makishima wanted to explode into a million pieces.

He waited for Toudou to start laughing, or to say something, anything. Instead, he heard Toudou sigh.

“Oh, Maki-chan,” he said gently. “You have it bad.”

memory is a funny thing, in the way it smooths out friction and contention, preserving people at their best, forgiving the worst of their flaws.

see i remember you best in the mornings, your hands curled around a cup of coffee and your hair sticking up in a million places
but you’d smile at me and that smile would say i love you like nothing else did
i forget you’re like a hibernating bear in the morning, that you hate being disturbed, and you hated it even more when kenma called you at 3am to go line up and keep him company
and boy did you complain, because if you couldn’t sleep, then neither could i
but you rolled out of bed and got dressed and went anyways, because kenma’s your friend, and you’ve been doing things like this for him for years
and maybe you’d complain enough to wake the entire neighbourhood, but you’ll do it anyway because you care that much about your friends

i remember you in late afternoons, practicing volleyball with bokuto despite the fact we’ve spent all day playing and practicing, and everyone else is content to lay down and stop moving
i wondered how you still had energy to do that when kenma looked ready to expire and even lev was ready to call it a day
i forget you staying up late at night to do stupid things like move the furniture two inches left, so i kept bumping into things and you laughed when i cursed you out after the seventh stubbed toe
how later you begged your way back into my good graces, dragged me out for yakiniku and cleaned the bathroom for a month
until you did it again a few months later and i was ready to smother you with your pillows

i remember you before matches, telling us cheesy things that help pull the team closer, make us less of six individuals and more of a team
i don’t think i ever told you how much it comforted me, how much it helped me get ready for a match even though we all complained it was dumb and long winded and unnecessary
i forget the bad puns and the terrible jokes, all the set up for a punchline that made me want to throw shoes at you
i think i served a volleyball at your head once, just for that
i’d still do it again, honestly

i forget a lot how much i love you, in all the small things and the big, in the things i don’t remember and the things i do
loving you is loving the good and the bad, and sometimes it’s stupid hard especially when you’re singing ponponpon again, even though you know i hate that song
but i think i love you best when you’re here with me

lol hi again i'm glad this nijihimu bait caught team nijihimu, siren puns abound

already a big fan of shanties about the dangers out at sea (the sea is fcking coming for you, etc) so i love the format!! nijimura should've listened to old wives' tales more though, they'd know

thinking of old and bold sailors as mutually exclusive groups is really interesting, living to old age is harder if you've got guts, i guess. "calling you home again/to the cliffside—" is a great transition point from the romantic to the death-seeking. we're all just looking for a cliff to throw ourselves on

right, i love sirens! i love their sweet voices beckoning sailors to come chill in the icy depths of davy jones' locker. they're very reliable murderers. too bad nijimura thought himself immune, when himuro is a siren's siren. seriously, i thought i thought this through but siren!himuro is way better than i expected, doesn't need much beyond his smile plus that mysterious allure with his hair

nijimura's death being a quick affair and the clincher in this poem is abrupt and good!!! you don't actually want to tell the children that most of the men lost at sea were lunchmeat lol

thanks for the fill!! it's atmospheric for when you want to warn people away from man-eating sirens, but also keep em from turning out to be landlubbers

i wrote this after not sleeping for 24+ hours so i honestly dont remember writing half of it

1. The crack opens under their feet when Sanae trips for a second time, the accusation landing faster than Natsuo’s fist. It’s a simple order (raw and impulsive, clogged blood at last spat out).

They’ll think back to that simple order, how it throws both of them of balance, and realize that that’s how the veil of tension starts to unravel; frayed wires cackling with static as they fall undone like a fortress of cards, one and then two and then all, and then they’re trapped.

2. Except they’ve been trapped from the start. It’s not a veil, it’s a bridge. It’s rattled, almost a ruin, and yes it’s black but for all it is, it could never quite burn. Now there was a fissure and they both tripped on it. It’s now got them by the heel. It was always there.

3. Natsuo wants to take a jab at how Sanae’s let her grasp on her control slip— She could easily gain the figurative upper hand again, but when she calls her out it comes out only one third mocking & two thirds defensive;

The fist on the ground besides Sanae’s face shakes. All cards are now on the table. They’re playing attorneys of the past.

4. “It was him, wasn’t he?”, she says, voice shaking with effort — the effort of mentioning a worthless man who’s pushed someone so far down a worthless path. “was it worth it? has it been worth it?”

“you should’ve lost”, she blames back, water and fire a single note chasing after a pentagram if emotion’s ups & downs. There’s a ‘then’ and a ‘we’ that rest heavy in the back of her head, almost dripping down to her tongue, but she’d sooner swallow it and choke than even consider yielding them out-loud.

“You’ve lost more than you’ve won”, Sanae growls, like her hand isn’t gripping a bony wrist with desperate strength.

5. Sanae is betting on this accidental chance. She’s ready to win this dare even if she loses the war,

though she knows that there’s only losers in the battlefield.

6. Sanae doesn’t know the whole story; Natsuo reminds her as much.

She just happens to know enough.

She knows of someone who broke and didn’t care to rebuild himself. She knows of someone who was broken and put herself back together in odd angles and crooked shapes. She speaks of someone who still doesn’t know how to care, because she never learned, because she tried to learn from the wrong places, and who does she think she is?

“You think too highly of yourself. I might be the black, but you’re not the white.”


7. Natsuo is sure that there’s a bit of her in Sanae, a bit of Natsuo that Sanae keeps alive inside her. Just a bit, but for all it’s small it’s well-placed, the black in her eye that makes her stray off her path, and it

has the power to taint her—

(No. It definitely has. She carries herself like regret’s never weighted down her step, after all.)

8. Natsuo has a smile like a howl, is a girl that’s all bite. Natsuo doesn’t know how to feel bad about what she’s done and Sanae doesn’t know how to feel regret.

They don’t know of those, but they still expect the other to (know). They look for it with acute words that dig at the same old wounds, they look for it following unknown leads, in the wrong places.

9. It’s the price of ignorance. The wound hurts but they were made to endure pain; They know of patching themselves up, standing back up, “if it hurts it’s healing”, they don’t know of letting something bleed. The skin grows thicker but sometimes it still stings, memories hide behind ghost pains, if they were made to endure pain where did the flood come from?

10. The water under the bridge runs deeper than it looks, a hand on a wrist shakes like the fist underneath, it’d be easier to dislodge from an avalanche than dislodge from this. the bridge shakes, the smell of a sea can be tasted in the air and no one knows which dam broke first.
