Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Quotes

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

An oldie but a goodie—in this round, we draw inspiration from famous words said by other people.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." -Friedrich Nietzsche
    • The quote can come from almost anything—famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, etc.— but please don't quote personal conversations you've had or overheard.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Natsuo & Yuzuko). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Natsuo/Yuzuko). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

honoka is absolutely the dog

***

Officer Sonoda's drug-sniffing dog
picked up the scent of a pre-gloaming fog
She prepared to arrest the junk market seer,
Who gave a contrite "just one moment, my dear"
then upended her table and into the smog
of crowded back-alleys seemed to disappear

The sly fortune teller while hiding her face
ducked through the stalls on the satellite base
But the narc-pup with officer Umi in tow
whiffed "the marvel of seeing a double rainbow"
and those two were soon giving Nozomi chase
until she was cornered with nowhere to go

Said Umi, "you, dealer, are under arrest-
for carrying feelings, my hound can attest."
Then the oracle uncorked a bottle of fright
which she lobbed to clear space for her criminal flight
Umi fell to her knees and a sob wrenched her chest
Nozomi ran past her to vanish from sight

oh!! i love how visceral the descriptions are - how is this bad poetry!!

my favorite lines:

"i'll write my name and hope it erodes
only when i disintegrate with you."
-- AAA i love declarations of eternal love like this, until the skies burn and the rivers dry up, hoping to be together until the end of time...

"a framework of loose threads cut from the loom
tied together by our own, fragile hands"
-- i can see this line so vividly? its such a nice metaphor for broken things being tied together again to form something better

i think it speaks to the original quote very well!! thank you for filling <3

this is one of my favorite quotes ever and just. thank u //stuffs this fill into my mouth

mayuzumi's rumination on being forgettable and just another person in the crowd is so ... sort of bittersweet? like he can't turn off trying to diminish his presence anymore, yet still he doesn't find a problem with it - or so he says, anyway. but still, akashi declaring he won't forget mayuzumi still makes him feel better, which means mayuzumi Does Care on some level.....aaaaaaaaaaaaa. this is good mayuaka content, thank u for filling <33

Kuramochi has always been running, it feels like. Or perhaps searching, or always moving forward, always looking for more—always looking up, up, up, to the stars and even beyond those, even deeper.

It's funny, then, that the thing that pulls him away, pulls him back down to Earth, is someone undeniably real, undeniably human. Because Miyuki is exactly that: a human being, miraculous in his contradictions and his imperfections, and somehow simultaneously otherworldly.

A small miracle, and a miracle that they met at all.

And maybe its because of the nature of their time spent together: long nights and longer days, seeing Miyuki's hair in a ridiculously short ponytail, the bags under his eyes grow and deepen, his speech slurred rom either lack of sleep or alcohol or both—very human moments, glimpses into who Miyuki is.

When Miyuki tells him how he feels like the job comes down to the two of them, his heart skips, and not even the stars—which he thought would be his first and last and only great love—have elicited that kind of reaction from him.

There are other moments, too, like this morning, where he wakes up realizing that Miyuki is there with him, that they must have fallen asleep together in Kuramochi's narrow bed. The sun is just starting to rise, casting shadows across Miyuki's face.

Miraculous, in its human qualities—in its flaws.

Miyuki wakes up shortly after, rubbing his eyes with the heel of his hand. "Wh'time'sit?" he asks, his words nearly unintelligible.

"A little after five," Kuramochi answers, voice rough. His hand is curled over Miyuki's shoulder, thumb stroking lazy circles without really being aware of what he's doing.

Miyuki fumbles around for the alarm clock on the bedside table, as if he has to verify Kuramochi's claims before he accepts them as truth.

When he confirms the early hour, he groans and shoves his face further into Kuramochi's armpit, grumbling something that Kuramochi doubts is a coherent sentence.

"Sorry, what was that?"

Miyuki sighs, lifts his head. "Doesn't matter." He props his chin on Kuramochi's chest, squeezing his eyes shut against the morning sun. "How much did we drink last night?"

Kuramochi casts his eyes over to the bottle on the desk. "Too much, I think," he answers. "But, hey, we're both still clothed."

Miyuki snorts, then rolls so he's properly on his side, facing Kuramochi. "We should get up—I should. Get up and go back to my room, get clothes..."

Neither of them move for a moment.

Kuramochi wants so desperately to reach out and touch Miyuki's face, let his fingers map it out like he used to trace constellations on star charts.

And then he blinks, and Miyuki is off the bed, grabbing his button up from the back of Kuramochi's chair and sliding out the door with a quick: "I'll see you later!"

He stares at the space Miyuki left behind for a long while before he finally gets up.

I really like this prompt! Actually I loved a lot of your prompts this br, but I write at a snail’s pace so I can only fill this one. Hope you like it! :)

[And, I made them keep their same surnames because otherwise I would get too confused. Sorry if that's like a pet peeve of yours or something?]

***

Takeda never gave much thought as to about what marriage itself would be like. His parents pressured him to get married for so long that, until he met Ukai, it felt more like an obligation or duty than something he actually wanted to do.

His big life plan just sort of stops right at ‘marriage,’ and now Takeda is a married man with no idea what to expect. There's this constant unsettling feeling of vulnerability looming over him, almost like driving to a destination he really wants to go to, but isn't exactly sure what or where it is.

At first, as they get settled into their new routine, marriage is a bit like dating all over again. Takeda discovers, married life it isn’t a world filled with hearts, rainbows, and fresh cooked dinners every night. They still have their fair share of squabbles, like the time Ukai forgot to put the toilet paper facing the right way, or how Takeda left the freezer door cracked open a hair and accidentally spoiled all of Ukai’s frozen snacks.

Still, Takeda can’t imagine it any other way.

After the honeymoon phase is over, they settle into this sort of rut. It’s a very comfortable rut; Ukai at the shop, Takeda at school, shogi with the Vice-principal on Sundays…

Just as Takeda’s about to doze off for the night, a thought tickles his brain. He realizes he doesn’t want to end up like one of those stick in the mud old couples doing the same old same old things week after week, year after year. The thought pokes and prods, preventing him from getting a wink of sleep. He counts some sheep, tosses and turns, but the thought just won’t leave him be.

Takeda delicately turns over, glancing to see if Ukai is still awake. He’s not. (Since Takeda is a teacher, he’s very adept at knowing when people are truly awake or not).

“Keishin,” Takeda whispers, receiving a muffled groan in response.

“Keishin, let’s go on a date!”

Ukai’s eyes snap open. “But, we’re married!” He says it like going on a date when you’re married is a terrible taboo.

“Just because we’re married doesn’t mean we can’t still go on dates.”

“You can’t mean...for us to go now?”

Takeda is about to say ‘Of course I do’ and drag Ukai out of bed, when he lets out a big yawn. It was already well past 9 and he had to teach in the morning. Maybe his spontaneous date idea wasn’t so perfect after all. If he comes in looking hungover, haggard, and harried his students will run right over him.

But, one way or another, they were still going on a date.

“Then...what about this Saturday, you’re off Saturday morning, right?”

“Saturday?” Ukai squints, “Isn’t that the day we’re supposed to get a new couch?”

Their couch is on its last leg, it’s a balancing act to even sit on the thing. Takeda doesn’t want to put it off any longer, they’ve worked so hard to squeeze shopping into both their busy schedules. Sunday they have shogi with the Vice-principal so they can’t then. Maybe there isn’t time for a date, unless...

“Why don’t we do both? Dating is all about the mindset anyway.” Takeda taps a finger to his head.

**

The moment they set foot in the furniture store, nostalgia washes over Takeda as he reminisces about when they first started dancing around the idea of dating. They were in that awkward in between of being something beyond just friends, but not being officially together, and neither one wanted to be the first to admit there was something more going on. So for a long while their ‘dates’ were accompanying each other on simple errands just for the sake of each other’s presence.

“What about that one?”

Ukai tugs his hand sharply to the right and Takeda looks up to find perhaps the ugliest couch he’s ever seen. A blindingly bright yellow, it looked as if someone spilled some radioactive substance over the whole couch.

They are not buying that couch.

“I know, I know, but can we at least try it out?” Ukai tilts his head, giving Takeda the same look he does when he’s asking if he can have a smoke in bed. Just this once.

Ugh, fine, Takeda can never say no to that look. Still hand-in-hand, they walk over to try out the yellow eyesore of a couch.

The couch is deceptively cozy, it’s like cuddling with big puffy cloud. As he leans against the couch arm he feels the weeks sorrows melting away. Okay, maybe they could check and see if the couch came in any other colors.

“This is comfortable as fuck!” Ukai grins, unclasping their hands to stretch an arm around Takeda’s shoulders. When Takeda sees that look of sheer unadulterated pleasure on Ukai’s face, he can’t help but smile too.

“The color reminds me of that car you used to have,” Takeda shakes his head, leaning in a little closer.

“Hey, we had a lot of good times in that car,” Ukai whispers into his ear, making Takeda blush. This was getting a little bit intimate for such a public place, but it was a date.

“Admit it. You liked that car.” Ukai kisses his cheek, and the hand formerly around Takeda’s shoulders starts trailing down his back, settling around his waist. When Ukai kisses him deeper, Takeda doesn’t want him to stop, but darn it, with the store manager gawking at them like that, they were going to have to take this couch somewhere more private. Like their apartment.

**

They buy the couch and set it up in their apartment as soon as possible so they can continue with their activity. It’s just like all the times in Ukai’s car but 10 times more comfortable and minus the stress of some unassuming person peering in at them through the car window. Plus, now every time Takeda walks into their living room a rush of happiness swims in his stomach. He knows even if he keeps on doing the same old same old routine, it will never get old, not when he’s with Ukai.

kind of heavy on meta & im not too happy w the narrative style i (accidentally?) fell into but!!!! i hope you like it o)-<

***

Koga was a coffee person, the kind that take their coffee hot and black and seem to find enjoyment in a strong brew, expression unflinching before a bitterness that they found sacrilegious to hide behind sugar. He was a coffee person, but during their first year he still indulged Teshima’s multiple attempts at, as he’d call it, introducing him to the amazing world of tea.

It starts with a “want to come over to study?” and a “want something to drink?”, only to discover that the other doesn’t actually have anything to offer but coffee and some boxed juice.

“Not even a teapot, Kimitaka?”, he had asked in astonishment. The other simply shrugged, expression perhaps slightly sheepish but mostly unbothered. The poor guy wasn’t even aware of what he was missing, he thought, almost pitying him. He had shook his head like it was sad and Koga had barely surpassed a huff of laughter, like the dramatist was amusing.

He pours water in the teapot, the stove behind already burning with a low fire. The first time he made tea for Koga he went as far as to use spring bottled water — An ace under his sleeve that’d boost the quality of the brew, if nothing else. Koga hadn’t known, of course, though he did take note of the teapot already full and waiting for them.

Observant as always, picking on the details. When Teshima thinks of the way he listened to his explanations that day though —abundant words about water temperature and sitting times, how they all changed for each type of tea, how they all affected aroma and flavour— he’s still under the impression that he was being particularly careful in the way he gave him his attention.

Sometimes he almost thinks that he should’ve found that intimidating, his focus trained on him like that — Almost. But Koga was gentler back then, and Teshima’s always been too stubborn to feel intimidation. He thinks they were similar in that way, sometimes.

(Koga’s eyes started to pass through him sometime during their second year. It wasn’t new, they’d often skim over him during practice —that stung, not that an elite would care—, but the way they started avoiding him inside the clubroom, outside of it? Their absence somehow weighted him down more than their presence ever did.

He'd look at his name on his phone, think of all the times after the interhigh he pretended he hadn't seen it too, and think that they were similar in that way too, sometimes.)

They had tried black tea first, an intuitive choice. As he catches a whiff of the leaves when he opens their container, he has to laugh at that — He had boiled the water back then, out of habit, to bring out the tea’s baked sweetness. Of course the guy wasn’t impressed by that, the different blends not doing much to win his favor.

Green tea and white tea followed, a different one each time. Fruit teas occasionally, when Aoyagi was present as those were the ones he liked; Even pineapple as a prank once. Koga had scrunched his nose, rolled his eyes when Teshima snickered, but still drank all of it. He always did, though they did skip the exchange of words they usually had after that (“Did you like it?”, “It was fine”).

The last time he went to Koga’s house as a first year, he surprised him with a teapot and a few varieties — All types Teshima liked, of course.

“Coffee is just more practical”, he had said then, Teshima remembering whenever he went through the ritual and thought of Koga — How he’d just set the coffee maker, went to do something else, then went back for a cup when it was done. How he often multitasked as he downed the drink, and hey, maybe that was the secret to standing the bitterness. “But since you come here often, I thought I might as well.”

He had said that but still stood by his side and watched as he prepared himself a cup, idle conversation almost hiding the way he followed step by step like he looked for something else to learn.

Teshima thinks of Koga’s last words to him (“I thought you of all people would understand!”) as he strains the leafs and, not for the first time, feels like he’s close —so close—, but,

doesn’t.

Thinks of how memories are not like tea leafs, how no matter how much he runs them over in his head, carefully passing them through the filter of what he’s supposed to understand, there’s bits of information, unsaid words and perhaps answers that he just can’t seem to catch.

(Sometime in the future he’ll talk to Koga again, and he’ll say something to him — He’ll remember those words, how they looked so big and so simple against the starry sky over them, his inflection as he confessed “I don’t regret what happened that day”. How everything that had passed felt so small, how for a moment that shared feeling was the only thing that mattered. How he finally understood what the other meant, how it was almost comical the way he had missed it for so long.

It’s the things that you don’t do the ones that you end up regretting the most.)

did u want a sequel to cursebreaker shunshin bc that's what i wrote, apparently.

***

shunshin's eyes are cool behind his glasses, unimpressed and unintimidated, the massive spiraling maze of sutra surrounding him collapsing back into something the size of a stack of playing cards, almost innocuous in his hand. "did you make a wish?" he says, and the demon's face stretches into a grin that's almost familiar.

"that would be telling," it says, tapping the charred coin with one long nail. the coin disintegrates in a puff of black flakes and shunshin raises a casual hand, the resulting blast of cold air clearing the room. he knows better than to breathe any of that in. "why don't you try it?" the demon says, looking at shunshin out of miyuki's eyes with a glint that really isn't too far off from the real thing. it has been with him most of his life, shunshin supposes. it's had time to learn.

"no, thank you," shunshin says, sounding bored. try harder, his tone says. it's the same one he would use on the real miyuki.

"c'mon," the demon says, wheedling, and this is where its making the biggest mistake. miyuki would switch tactics faster, go on the offensive, find a weakness to exploit. of course, shunshin's limited the demon's options, and nothing it could conjure from the confines of the charmed circle is going to get it out. which leaves bargaining, something that's always difficult for a thing that's used to just taking what it wants. "there's got to be something you want."

"oh, there is," shunshin says, listening to the slow, even ticking coming from somewehre in the room. it's been speeding up almost imperceptibly since they started the process. it's time. "i would like you to leave."

the sutra flies from shunshin's hands, blizzard of paper whiting out the entire room, the demon's howl cut off by the sudden hush of falling snow.

*

miyuki's eyes are bloodshot when he opens them, entire body bruised with exhaustion. it's probably not something he wants shunshin to see, but he hadn't given shunshin a contact or brought someone along and it's not a good idea to leave anyone alone after something like that, so here they are. miyuki's been down for thirty-six hours straight, but his skin is clear of magic for the first time in what has to be years and years.

"you've really got to stop undressing me like this," miyuki says, voice a hoarse croak. shunshin scoffs.

"if you keep trying to cover your vulnerabilities with the same joke it just gets sad," he says.

there's a beat and then miyuki laughs, spreading his palm over his sternum, where the master cursemark used to be. "you really are good," he says.

"remember that when you get the bill," shunshin says, and miyuki's laughing again, laughing until his eyes water.

"you are allowed."
you tell me this often,
over the whisper of sheets,
through the dust of the field.

"you are allowed."
i see your hand twitch,
and imagine, for a moment,
how it would feel over my heart.

"you are allowed."
this time it's in the cantina,
before anyone else rises.
just you, me, and the rice.

"you are allowed."
sometimes you tell me in words.
and then, other times, you tell me
with your hands, with your eyes.

"you are allowed."
allowed to feel, allowed to hurt,
allowed to be, allowed to need.

on good days, i take your advice.
on good days, i take your hand.
on good days, i am always allowed,
and you are always there—

Make a love who is worthy of you.

***

After Imayoshi has made the world and everything on it, he decides to make himself a companion. Watching the evolution of the species and the struggle for the position at the top of the food chain would be more amusing if he had someone to discuss it with - perhaps even someone to play against? He could imbue them with powers akin to his own and give them intelligence nearly of his level. Not a perfect match, of course. That would be to risk being overthrown. But close enough to make it interesting.

Yes. All the little animals flock to each other. Why should he not have a companion as well?

He sweeps his fingers through the dark void of nothingness, gathering up the raw potential and rolling it into a ball. It falls open as soon as he lets go, a glimmering black puddle that lies in the air like a levitatin cloth, so Imayoshi lets it be.

His companion can become anything if he's made of the void but Imayoshi will shape his character just a little. He reaches down to the bones of the dead and drops them into the void. Let his companion come to life already knowing that all lower life forms end and he should not grow too attached to them.

What else? Intelligence. That one is easy. Imayoshi leans over the cloth and chants softly, conferring his own knowledge to his creation. Of course, mere facts mean nothing without a mind sharp enough to grasp them so he reaches down to his universe again and takes the hunger-sharp understanding of the predators. Their minds are keener than thos o prey, who are always consumed with fleeing and not becoming food. It is predators that have sufficient free time and confident to plot and plan.

Intelligence, creativity, potential, an awareness of death...

Imayoshi thinks of how often he laughs and decides a sense of humor would be good too. The next time one of them does something that strikes him as amusing, he places his lips just above the void and laughs, letting it swallow the sound of his merriment.

Piece by piece, he forms his perfect companion. When it's done, he takes a sun from the solar system and crushes it between his hands until it's nothing more than the idea of radiant fierceness. He places it in the middle of the void and wraps the darkness around it.

Too late, he realizes he did not put anything in to make his creation love him. He'll have to work to win its loyalty.

Discussion of sex but no actual sex! Implied Imayoshi/Makishima/Hanamiya. Don't even ask omg.

***

"So, you're still shacked up with Makishima?" Hanamiya asked Toudou pleasantly. He reached out and plucked an apple from the display without looking, somehow managing to choose a perfect-skinned crison fruit.

"Yes, it'll be our tenth anniversary this month," Toudou said politely. While he didn't understand the reason for it, Hanamiya ggave him the creeps despite always being perfectly pleasant whenever they met.

"Oh, congratulations!" Hanamiya glanced around the supermarket, as if checking for eavesdroppers, then asked with a wide grin, "So, is he still so wild in bed?"

"..." Toudou was sure he'd misheard but what could Hanamiya have said? Is his child still dead? Has he trialed his mead? Realizing he was gaping at Hanamiya in a most unattractive manner, he quickly straightened his shoulders and said, "I'm sorry, what did you say about Maki-chan?"

"I asked if he was still so wild in bed," Hanamiya repeated patiently with a tilt of his head to the side.

There was no mistaking it this time. Hanamiya really had asked about Makishima's bedroom habits. Toudou drew himsef up to his full height, hoping the blush on his cheeks would be mistaken for anger instead of embarrassment. "That is absolutely none of your business!"

It would have been a good idea to exit then, storming off in offended dignity, but curiosity compelled Toudou to ask, "And what do you mean, still?"

Toudou wasn't going to admit how vanilla their sex life was to this jeering ape of a basketball player! He couldn't think how he'd never not realized that Hanamiya was clearly just a scheming, maleoven homewrecker!

"Oh, he didn't tell you?" Hanamiya asked, raising a hand to his mouth as if shocked. "...I'm sure he forgot, it was so long ago, he certainly wouldn't lie to you about something as unimportant as a few kinky threesomes he had during his time in England."

Toudou's fingers tightened on the handle of the shopping basket. As a weapon, it left a lot to be desired but there were some gourds over there that looked hard enough to hurt if he smashed them over Hanamiya's head.

"I'm sure they were so unmemorable that he just forgoot about them entirely," he lied, turning to sweep away. If Hanamiya said one more word, Toudou really might just attack him in the middle of the supermarket and then they'd be banned for life and this was the only place that sold his favorite brand of biscuit!

Biscuits were much more important than some fling in Makishima's past. Really. Really

Underage kisses, implied Bad End/bad things in the future, but really it's just a kind of cute tale of Hanamiya and his schoolboy crush on Imayoshi!

***

Afterwards, Imayoshi was willing to admit that it might have been his fault. Just a little.

The warning signs had been there but he'd ignored them because he'd been so enchanted with Hanamiya's mind that he'd assumed a similar level of emotional maturity. There were so few pople who properly understood how to manipulate others, how to pull at their invisible marionette strings and make them think it was their own idea all along. Hanamiya provided good conversation, a sounding board to bounce ideas off and despite being a year below Imayoshi, he could easily keep up with Imayoshi's coursework and debate essay topics with Imayoshi knowledgeably.

If they'd been in the same year, perhaps they would have been friends.

But since a year separated them, they went into it knowing that Imayoshi would keep leaving Hanamiya behind.

*

"If girls give boys chocolates on Valentine's Day, but boys give girls chocolates on White Day, then on what day do you think gays give each other chocolate?" Hanamiya asked as he stretched out on Imayoshi's bed with a chocolate box balanced on his stomach. He nibbled at a truffle tenatively, waiting to see what was inside before he committed to taking a proper bite. Dark chocolate was his favorite, 100% pure chocolate with no liquer or fruit, but all the girls seemed to have been set on giving him fancy truffles instead.

"Any day they want," Imayoshi answered from his desk where he was studying. Something flew over his shoulder ad he jerked to the side just as a chocolate, wrapped in gold foil, landed on Imayoshi's textbook.

"Happy Chocolate Day," Hanamiya quipped blandly. "I got too many of them to finish on my own. You can have half."

"I'm touched," Imayoshi said and though his tone was clearly sarcastic, Hanamiya smiled anyway.

(But Imayoshi was looking at his textbook and missed it.)

*

"Senpai, have you ever kissed anyone?" Hanamiya asked while they were alone in the storage room, putting the balls away.

"I hope you're not about to ask me for advice on how to kiss someone properly, Makoto-chan," Imayoshi deflected.

"Hah!" Hanamiya's laugh was loud but to Imayoshi's expert ears, it sounded just a little forced. "Might as well ask a fish how to ride a bicycle. Even if you have kissed someone, you were probably terrible at it."

"I received no complaints," Imayoshi said, stacking the last ball onto the pile and closing the lid.

"Of course not. She wouldn't say you were bad to your face. I'm the only one who's not scared of you and who'd actually tell you when you fuck up." Hanamiya leaned against the wall, face too shadowed for Imayoshi to make out anything but the wet gleam of the whites of his eyes. "Kiss me and I'll tell you if you're terrible at it or not."

The gamut was so obvious that it was almost cute so Imayoshi decided to indulge him.

*

It was a little his fault, Imayoshi would admit, but not all of it. He'd never told Hanamiya to fall in love with him.

ahhhh I love The Handmaiden, and it makes such a perfect KiyoYachi AU!! This prompt deserves way more than this, but this is the best I could do for now. Thank you so much for the prompt!

***

The scam was a simple one: help the Count marry the heiress, take her abroad, shut her away in an asylum, and run away with the inheritance. "You'll be a rich woman, Hitoka," the Count had told her. "Just be her handmaiden for a few months. It'll be easy."

Easy, he'd said. But seeing Kiyoko here, her long dress draped over her shoulders and her hair tied elegantly at the top of her head, Hitoka was beginning to think this would be anything but simple. Shimizu Kiyoko was beautiful.. Hitoka had no idea how to lie to her.

/

"Is the bath ready?" Kiyoko asked on the first evening. Her hair was loose now, spilling in dark waves over her pale neck. For a moment, Hitoka was distracted by the dip of collarbone visible underneath the thin bathrobes Kiyoko wore, here in the privacy of her bedroom. Hitoka looked at the floor.

"Yes, miss. The water is ready," she said. When Kiyoko dropped the robes and stepped into the wash basin, it was all Hitoka could do not to stare.

She was not allowed this. She was just her handmaiden—Kiyoko was not hers to touch.

/

"Hitoka-chan," Kiyoko said, holding out a pale blue Western-style dress adorned with intricate embroidery. "I want you to try this on."

"Me?" Hitoka murmured. "But—"

"I never get the chance to wear all these dresses anyway. What's the use in owning them if they're never worn?" Kiyoko interrupted. "This color will look beautiful on you—I promise."

Hitoka took the dress. She felt Kiyoko's gray eyes following her as she slipped off her own shapeless smock and let the fabric puddle on the floor at her feet. Then she looked back at the dress. "Um—"

"Here, let me help you," Kiyoko said. She took the dress gently from Hitoka's hands and laid the fabric on the floor. "Step into the center."

Hitoka did, powerless to do anything else. Kiyoko's voice was impossible to ignore, commanding Hitoka's attention like a siren's song at sea. Her breath came in slow, shuddering breaths as Kiyoko lifted the dress up past her legs, her waist, her chest, guiding Hitoka's arms through the sleeves and tying the laces at the back with long, expert fingers. "It fits you perfectly," Kiyoko whispered.

Hitoka wasn't sure if it was the tightness of the laces or the ghosting of Kiyoko's lips over the shell of her ear, but suddenly, Hitoka couldn't breathe.

"You look beautiful," Kiyoko said when she was finished. "You look like a lady."

Hitoka had to take her word for it. How could Hitoka possibly look at her own reflection when Kiyoko was standing at her shoulder?

The Count had been wrong—so wrong. This was not an easy job. This job was impossible.

Aoyagi has never been good with words. It's not that he doesn't know what he wants to say; it's just that he can't find the right words to express what he's feeling. His thoughts come to him as concepts, and colors, and shapes, and trying to force them into words cuts off so much that he can never find the words to fully express what he's feeling.

Take Teshima for example. There are so many things he could say about his partner. About how hard Teshima works, how much Teshima cares about their partnership, how much Teshima cares about the team as a whole. But Aoyagi has never been good at finding the words for that.

Luckily, he doesn't usually have to. They've worked together for so long that Teshima has learned to read between the lines, to take the few words Aoyagi says and silently fill in the rest of the thought that remains unspoken behind them. Sometimes, he doesn't even need to say the words in the first place. Sometimes, a gesture, or a look, or even a pointed thought is enough for Teshima to pick up on everything else. Aoyagi doesn't know how he was so lucky as to have someone like Teshima come into his life, but he knows that he never wants to lose the bond that they've created together.

But despite everything, sometimes words still aren't enough, even with as much as Teshima is able to fill in. Sometimes, like now, Aoyagi feels like he needs something more. He wants to tell Teshima just how much Teshima means to him, and he knows that there's no way he can possibly express it through words alone.

Luckily, Tadokoro is able to help. Like usual, their senpai and mentor has useful advice for him. "Food is symbolic of love when words are inadequate," Tadokoro says, and Aoyagi doesn't look back. He wasn't much a cook, but he'd learn for Teshima's sake. He's lost track of how many recipes he's tried, and how many times he's tested his favorites until he perfects them. He isn't the type for anything overly fancy, but when he thinks back on his favorite foods his grandmother has cooked for him, he's reminded that something doesn't need to be fancy for it to mean the world to someone.

The meal he cooks for himself and Teshima isn't fancy, but every dish is something that relates back to the two of them together, whether it's their favorite snack after practice, or something they ate when they went out after the first race Aoyagi won for them.

When Teshima's eyes met his across the table, he knows he doesn't have to say anything more. Teshima understands just fine.

Imayoshi:

Yo, I’m Shoichi Imayoshi,
Smartest guy you’ll ever know. See
I’m Number 4 at Touou Academy,
They’ll remember my captaincy.
Essentially, I’m a prodigy,
Don’t step to me with my IQ of 160--

Hanamiya:

Hahaha, am I supposed to be impressed?
You’re just like a gorilla banging on his chest.
Talkin’ all that shit about your team,
Everyone knows Touou’s ruled by a queen.
Momoi’s the one who gathers the intel,
Youre just some glasses-wearing proto-incel.
You had the Miracle ace, still came in 3rd place,
You’re such a disgrace, how dare you show your face--

Imayoshi:

Third’s not bad compared to your team.
Was winning ever even really your dream?
All you want to do is make people scream
And the way you stick your tongue out is obscene--

Hanamiya:

Why, thank you!

Imayoshi:

That wasn’t a compliment, you twisted sadist!
But I’ve got to admit, what’s really mad is
The way that I can’t stop thinking of your teardrop.
You took that shot and made my heart stop.
You’re a spider freak, you’ve got me ensnared,
Yes, I know, you didn’t think I cared,
But that’s just because you’re so oblivious,
That the fact that I adore you is curious--

Hanamiya:

Ugh, all this affection is making me sick!
Fine, you win, go back to being a prick.

Imayoshi:

I love you too, darling.

Takao has never understood the way Midorima's brain works. At first, he considered that something of a problem, or at the very least, a source of constant irritation. Since then, he's come to love that about his partner. Midorima may be strange and full of more quirks than the rest of the team combined, but that's the very thing that makes Takao love him so much. If one takes the time to get to know Midorima past all of the prickles, it's impossible not to come to love him, or at least that's what Takao believes.

Take the to-do lists for example. Midorima is always making to-do lists. Some of them are common ones, like things to remember to pick up at the store, or class assignments due in the next week. Those alone are nothing unusual; Takao is pretty certain most of his classmates make similar things at least occasionally.

But Midorima doesn't stop there. His to-do lists extend beyond the standard ones into things Takao never would have imagined. Training menus for practice and packing lists for his bag for a game are still on the edge of normal by Takao's count, but then there are lists like "Oha Asa Lucky Items" that grow by one line every day until the card is full, and then start over on a new blank sheet. Or "Ingredients in the Fridge for Dinner," which is always such a complicated tangle of crossed out lines, additions, and arrows between things that Takao doesn't even try to parse it.

And then there's the card that Takao doesn't know what to think about. Unlike most of the cards, which Midorima shows him from time to time, this one was buried deep in a side pocket of Midorima's bag. Takao only sees it when it falls to the floor by mistake as Midorima digs for a new roll of tape. Midorima's ears are burning when he snatches the card back out of Takao's hands, but Takao has already seen what it says.

"Takao's Likes" the top of the card reads, and below it in Midorima's neat, cramped hand is a long list of Takao's favorites ranging from foods he likes to music he listens to while studying to his favorite type of socks to wear for a game.

Takao can't stop the smile that spreads across his face.

"I love you too, Shin-chan," he says, bumping playfully against Midorima's chest.

Midorima doesn't say anything, but he doesn't need to. Takao learned to read his silences long ago.
