Bonus Round 6: Remixes

The goal is in sight, participants! Let's finish strong by drawing upon the thousands of fanworks you've created this summer and putting them in new lights.

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible.

RULES

Choose a fanwork created by other participants in a previous main or bonus round of SASO 2017 and create a new piece based on it. You could create a fanart of another work, an FST inspired by a piece’s style, a podfic of someone else's work, retell another person’s fanfic from another point of view, create a new fanfic inspired by a great piece of art... go wild! Sequels do count as remixes, with limits: "And then the same thing happened again" is not ok, but "And then some totally new thing happened" is fine, and please don't create only sequels.
You cannot remix your teammates' works. You cannot remix your own works. You can remix fills that were created to your own prompts.
You can remix a remix, but if we see any remix chains we'll be upset, so do this with moderation and restraint.
You must have permission from the original creator. There's a blanket permissions post here (feel free to add yourself to it!), or you can leave a comment on their original post asking for permission.
You must include the dreamwidth link to the original work in your post.
Since all fills are based on previous works, there will be no prompts for this round. Simply post your fill as a comment in response to this post.

A jacket. Returned at the gantry of a train station in suburban Tokyo, neatly folded, lying at the bottom of a paper bag.

Akashi is five minutes early to their meeting, as is his custom. Kita Shinsuke arrives exactly on time, and Akashi will come to learn that that is his custom too. When he greets him with a small bow and takes the bag extended to him, he is surprised to see that Kita has gone to all that trouble; he would have expected any other high school boy to pass him the jacket in a crumpled heap. Any other high school boy, except—well—maybe himself. The invitation to tea or coffee is no casual gratitude, no slip of the tongue. Akashi doesn’t take just anyone to his favourite cafe.

An email address. Written on a torn page from a notebook, the edges straight and true.

The thing about Kita is, he never replies to messages immediately. Neither does he leave you hanging. He has mastered the art of giving you just enough space to breathe, enough time to put your phone away and contemplate the fact that it is 2 AM and your light is the only one on in the street, before he responds. It is a polite distance, respectful, and his answers are always considered. Akashi finds that he enjoys their exchanges: hearing about Atsumu’s antics, how fast Suna is growing, what a formidable serve Osamu’s developed. In turn, he shares little pieces of himself, even tries to repeat one of Mibuchi’s more off-colour jokes. Though he can’t quite deliver it the same way, he thinks it amuses Kita nonetheless. When the gap between messages starts shortening, Akashi knows Kita looks forward to this as much as he does.

A light novel. A tale about journeys, a girl and her talking motorcycle, and never settling.

The world is not beautiful, therefore it is. Kita had said that, once, in a text, and it had stayed with Akashi; he asks about it a few weeks later, and Kita brings the first book with him on his next trip to Tokyo. Akashi confesses he’s not much of a light novel reader, but takes great care to pick out something Kita might like in exchange. They talk of life and choices, of restlessness, of the extraordinary in the ordinary. Akashi gazes out the window on the long ride back, thinks, the seasons are changing.

A fountain pen. Tasteful and elegant in jet black, with silver accents, made to order.

It’s a passing remark. There’s just something about fountain pens, don’t you think?, and Akashi agrees. The next time he goes with his father to meet an old client turned family friend, he shakes his hand and politely inquires if he still takes custom orders. He understands how busy the business is these days—they’ve even got a shop in fashionable Ginza now. Well, we are busy, but for you, Akashi-kun, of course. It must be for someone special. Akashi only smiles and sips his tea. He adds, after a moment passes, that it is for someone starting a new phase of his life.

A letter. Received at the gantry of a train station in suburban Tokyo, neatly folded, lying at the bottom of a paper bag.

There is a circularity in all this that Akashi knows Kita finds pleasing, as he does. His first week as a university student has been a whirlwind; coffee with Kita in that cafe of theirs, the still point. He wonders at timing, at chance, at fate. If he had not lost that game, if he had been in a state of mind to remember his jacket, for Akashi does not forget things, not like that, but there are exceptions for everything. Kita Shinsuke, he hopes, is the last and best of them.

Akashi takes the congratulatory cake out of the bag when he gets home, places it in the fridge for supper later. Dark chocolate. The same cake he'd ordered, years ago. It’s then that he notices the envelope with his name on it, written in a poised hand with flowing fountain ink.

Carefully, he breaks the seal, and starts to read the letter within.

Emperor Voice takes the top of the charts on its first week of release.

Chihiro stands in front of the display, a face mask pulled up to cover his mouth and nose in the chill of Kyoto winter, a beanie covering his hair and making him less recognisable as he stands in front of the display, staring at the life size cut out of Seijuurou by the shelf, amazed by the sheer hatred he's capable of, resigned to the steady burn that's he's long since identified as love.

He doesn't reach for the neat row of albums, not even to knock them aside the way that he wants. He keeps his hands in his pockets and turns away, walking home.

There's a copy sitting on his doorstep. For a moment, Chihiro considers cracking it with the heel of his boot, smashing it until it's nothing more than shards of plastic. It's not like Seijuurou's given his heart any more care than that, anyway.

Shutting his eyes, Chihiro takes a deep breath and bends to pick the album up.

It takes up residence on his coffee table and he spends the next week pretending that he doesn't see it there. He refuses to talk about the album, or about Seijuurou, to anyone who asks, whether they're from the press, or from their old band. His scratch pad at work is full of lyrics that have nowhere to go: he carries your needle pricks in his skin, didn't realise you were bleeding him dry. Songs with no music to go with them, nothing more than a beat that he can tap out with his pencil as he thinks, retreating into work when he can't take solace in music any more.

He should have known better than to think that this sort of thing would last. Let Seijuurou take on the world by himself. Let him bring it to its knees before him. Maybe before, Chihiro would have been the first to kneel. Now, he'll refuse just out of principle.

Have you heard the album? the other members of the band text him, and he only looks at their messages for long enough to delete them. He doesn't need the contact, he doesn't need the commiseration and most of all, he doesn't need their attempts at facilitating some sort of reconciliation. Seijuurou already made his position crystal clear when he left the band. Chihiro likes to think that he's made his position just as clear in return.

If it's attention Seijuurou wants, if it's popularity, if those are the only things that truly matter to him, then he's clearly not having any trouble getting that on his own. If he doesn't need Chihiro for the sleepless nights, the downward spirals, the crashes between the hard work and demanding tour schedules, then fine. Chihiro isn't about to start chasing him.
