Bonus Round 6: Remixes

Remixes

The goal is in sight, participants! Let's finish strong by drawing upon the thousands of fanworks you've created this summer and putting them in new lights.

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible.

RULES
  • Choose a fanwork created by other participants in a previous main or bonus round of SASO 2017 and create a new piece based on it. You could create a fanart of another work, an FST inspired by a piece’s style, a podfic of someone else's work, retell another person’s fanfic from another point of view, create a new fanfic inspired by a great piece of art... go wild! Sequels do count as remixes, with limits: "And then the same thing happened again" is not ok, but "And then some totally new thing happened" is fine, and please don't create only sequels.
  • You cannot remix your teammates' works. You cannot remix your own works. You can remix fills that were created to your own prompts.
  • You can remix a remix, but if we see any remix chains we'll be upset, so do this with moderation and restraint.
  • You must have permission from the original creator. There's a blanket permissions post here (feel free to add yourself to it!), or you can leave a comment on their original post asking for permission.
  • You must include the dreamwidth link to the original work in your post.
  • Since all fills are based on previous works, there will be no prompts for this round. Simply post your fill as a comment in response to this post.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

FORMAT
Bonus round shenanigans all happen in the comments below. Brand-new works only, please.

Required Work Minimums:
  • 400 words (prose)
  • 400px by 400px (art)
  • 14 lines (poetry)
  • 8 tracks (fanmixes)
There is no max work cap.

Format your comment in one of the following ways:

If FILLING:If FILLING as a TEAM GRANDSTAND participant:
FILL: TEAM [YOUR SHIP], [RATING]
  • Replace [YOUR SHIP] with the name of the team you belong to. Any way you format it is fine.
  • Replace RATING with the rating of your fill (G - E)
  • Copy/paste/fill out the following form into your comment box. Delete the guidance text that's in parentheses.

  • NSFW FILLS: Please cross-link these fills and tag them clearly. [community profile] saso_afterhours is open to all NSFW fills.
    • Written/text fills can be hosted on AO3 or [community profile] saso_afterhours ONLY.
    • Art/visual fills can be hosted anywhere; you may include a small safe-for-work thumbnail of the fill in your comment.

Posts not using this format will be understood to be unofficial discussion posts, regardless of what they contain. They, like all comments in this community, are subject to the code of conduct.

If you see anyone breaking the code of conduct (e.g., causing drama, being rude) anywhere (not just DW), please contact the mods immediately.

SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

Have a question? Check The FAQ first. If you still need help, feel free to contact the mods. Happy fanworking!

The Unavoidable Sun (Look Down, You’re Talking to Your Highness Remix)

Tsukishima wipes his face with a towel and considers just dropping it onto the floor there. If he wants to keep being a hanger-on at Shiratorizawa’s training camp, Hinata “Ball Boy” Shouyou will have to get it without complaint and that’ll make Tsukishima laugh. But he catches Hinata’s eye for a split-second before he does it and something about his expression makes Tsukishima put the towel into the bin like he’s supposed to.

What a good boy you are, some voice in his head whispers, but that’s not it. Tsukishima just doesn’t like to make waves.

On the sidelines, Hinata grins at Tsukishima knowingly.

Tsukishima has blown Koganegawa off every time he’s asked if he wants to join the group for extra practices. At first it’s sort of liberating, no Yamaguchi or Kuroo or Bokuto or even Sawamura breathing down his neck about his slacking off. And he has a friend in lethargy, too, since Kunimi seems about as interested in practicing after practice as he does being set on fire. But it’s only freeing at first.

“Why are you even here, Tsukki?” Koganegawa asks, frustrated, as Tsukishima walks off again, phone already in hand.

Tsukishima ignores him and slips his headphones over his ears, but not before he hears Hinata knowingly say, “Ah, don’t worry about Tsukishima. He’ll come around.”

And, god damn Hinata, Tsukishima pauses. Thinks about how this is the only time Hinata’s allowed to play with them, how good it’ll feel to stop his quick, how much better it would be if Kageyama wasn’t so much better than them that he gets to go off to the national training camp – or maybe what Tsukishima wants is for them to be as good as Kageyama. Does it even matter? It’s not like that’ll ever happen. Some things are just impossible.

“Know your limits,” Tsukishima mutters under his breath, and walks away again. But it bothers him, later, when he’s alone in the guest dorms.

There’s a knock at his door a couple of hours later, Hinata sweaty and out of breath. He’s grinning hard. Tsukishima looks down at him, but isn’t looking down on him. He doesn’t know when that changed.

“Oi, Tsukishima,” Hinata says. “You got a shower I can use?”

Tsukishima lets him in, doesn’t even offer up a protest, lends him his towel even. He knows this isn’t something he’ll admit to later, not even to Yamaguchi, but he somehow knows Hinata’s not going to say anything either.

“It’s too dark to bike home tonight,” Hinata says when he comes back from the showers, flopping back on Tsukishima’s twin bed in only his boxer shorts.

“It’s plenty bright out,” Tsukishima says. “The moon is full.”

“I’m crashing here,” Hinata says, ignoring him. And then he grins at Tsukishima, his whole face lit up and scary, the way he does when he’s figured out an opponent and is about to spike them through the floor.

Tsukishima spends the night with Hinata next to him. It takes him a long time to fall asleep, too aware of Hinata’s sleeping form, but Tsukishima wakes up with Hinata’s face pressed to the back of his neck, his arm thrown over Tsukishima’s waist. In his early morning haze, Tsukishima thinks it’s kind of nice having someone’s body close like this, even if that body stops somewhere around his knees. It’s just him and Hinata and the early morning sun filtering through the windows.

Later that day, he seeks out Hinata – threatens him basically – and says that Hinata owes him. He hates that he needs Hinata so that he feels okay with practicing into the night with everyone from training camp, even though Tsukishima’s the only one with a proper invite to the camp. But the idea of Tsukishima invading someone’s space uninvited is unthinkable to him.

Tsukishima and Hinata wind up on opposite sides of the net when Kindaichi and Koganegawa all want to try blocking Hinata.

“Is this okay?” Kindaichi says to Tsukishima. “You guys are on the same team.”

Tsukishima stares hard across the net, watching Hinata tossing a volleyball up and catching it again neatly. “Solar eclipses occur at the new moon, when the moon is between the sun and the earth,” he says.

“Oh-kay,” Kindaichi replies. “God, no wonder Kageyama ended up at your weird school.”

Tsukishima adjusts the strap on his sports goggles. “I just mean it’ll be good practice. We don’t usually face off against each other.”

“Let’s see your broad attack, Hinata!” Koganegawa says.

Tsukishima smirks. Yeah. Let’s see it. I want to see it.

“Here I come!” Hinata says.

mfff there is so much tenderness here, despite the brutally honest observations

until it feels like Aomine's holding a trapped moth in his palm. highlights it especially, since the comparison brings to mind something so fragile and easy to rip apart with the right (wrong) movement, which fits the theme of them accidentally or not so accidentally destroying their own personal lives

this is a lovely aohimu character study i think :((( <3

THE BANTER!!! THE SHARPNESS OF IT, AND THE EASE, WORKING IN TANDEM, TO GIVE THEIR DYNAMIC THIS DANGEROUS FEEL THAT, EVEN THOUGH IT SEEMS TO FAVOR HIMURO'S SIDE, SEEMS BALANCED BECAUSE OF AOMINE'S... AOMINE-NESS. the last three lines especially pack such a punch in the dialogue, so that even in their softness there's still something to cut yourself with underneath. geh!!

YOU MAINTAINED THE UST HERE SO WELL!!! and the way himuro rationalizes why they should wait to chase the mark to disguise how much he just wants to fuck is so in character. awful

vertically, for now is also such a killer line ill have you know

LFKJFLK IT'S JUST LIKE HIMURO TO THINK OF USING SOMEONE'S CRUSH AGAINST THEM DURING BASKETBALL. BOY PERHAPS THERE ARE MORE IMPORTANT MATTERS AT HAND, HERE

There's a look in his eyes, like they want to wander again and he's trying really hard not to give into the temptation. i love your descriptions of aomine in love, like... resisting it but also being unable to cave. tsun motherfucker

Daiki follows at his heels, and Tatsuya suspects that he doesn't even realise that he's doing it. PUPPY

I LOVE HOW niji goes into this whole spiel about how it's their whole dynamic that's great, really, then ending it with It's the kissing that still feels the best, though. i really laughed aloud. but it really does fit because it's that kiss that like, opened himuro up and i love the exploration of how that final step made them even closer. the sweetness is so palpable and i adore it

mm i love this, nijimura's own insecurities coming to light, considering all the ways he and himuro don't fit, and ending on the note that they complement each other more than they're incompatible. it's a nice insight into how niji reins in his feelings by rationalizing them and coming to a clear conclusion, a stark contrast to the way himuro tends to spiral. they are perfect for each other

He doesn't yet think he's ready to face a world where he's entirely alone, and if Tatsuya can help simply with his sleep breathing from the bottom bunk, he's happy to do that.

i really loved this part because i'm not sure how much i brought it across in the original fill, but it's my headcanon that himuro is completely selfless in this one thing, in doing this for niji, in becoming all he needs, and you just nailed it so well and i'm emo

Lust doesn't think he's wanted anything quite in this way gghhs i love how they're literal personifications of giving into indulgence and desire but they resist and deny themselves this one thing. it's a great irony

and then this!! to overlap is to become obsolete. this like.. compartmentalization is so in character, even under a different name. i could read so much more of this au, the way you built it

IM NOT GONNA BE COHERENT W THIS ONE I CANT BELIEVE YOU REMIXED THIS EVIL THING INTO SOMETHING HAPPY (OR HAPPIER)

"Did you expect me to believe you?" Taiga asks, still not looking at him. "Again?" kagami is so hurt and won't look at him (it reminds me of the replace novel where himuro upsets him and kagami did the same and im < / 3)

"You can't apologise to me by breaking my heart again," Taiga tells him. "That's not how it works."

he is making so much sense rn and it is breaking my hearttttt uggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

he loves himuro so much even if it hurts him wtf

aaaaaaaah i love this expansion of that one part so much. getting into akashi's head is a treat as much as it is a challenge and you tackled it head on and shined

he'd like to think that's a foregone conclusion, that it has been ever since Tatsuya had asked to draw him and perhaps even before then. the certainty works so well with this sexual tension i'm like really floored by it

and then akashi's 'absolute' speech is just so. powerful? and then you subvert it with the last line, implying himuro did it to him first, and it's just ooooooooooooohhhh man. this was a fave au i did and you did wonders with it

ugh the comparisons you drew between oikawa and himuro were so. fitting? like even without the fantasy elements they're like that in canon too, and it's nice how you showed that himuro isn't a replacement as much as he is, like, his own person that iwa wants to do these things for because he's lonely

and the way iwachan won't accept compliments but would with kisses is *__*

YOU TOOK THE SELFCEST UP A NOTCH AND I LOVE EVERY SECOND OF IT

it was never Taiga that he wanted to prove it to. is sooo meaty, such a fantastic way of wording how the expectations he really wants to live up to is his own. #relate

the way he knows himself inside out and is still somewhat of a mystery is SO good, thanks to his labyrinth of a thought process. so damn good

GODDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD YOU TOOK THIS ONE TO ANOTHER LEVEL TOO BY INCLUDING MORE CHARACTERS, EXPANDING THE WORLD

that last line is absolutely murderous and im dead at its feet

ok so i love the thought process here -- it was just a joke on my part but you made it into something more, how kagami fulfills the role of 'sin' that himuro chose for him, how seamlessly you wove in the kink you wanted to include into something that seems unrelated but fits so well, and then i knew you had it in you as a closing line like some kind of realized potential. i love this, ilu

You love him, it says, and it's not a question but a demand. You love him. Explain.

Atsushi doesn't reply. The demon has its claws deep enough into his consciousness that it must know what Tatsuya means to him, at least objectively. Atsushi would kill for Tatsuya and that's simple enough for a demon to understand. Atsushi would die for him, but the demon isn't particularly keen on pressing this particular point, when it will be left without a host.

So when the demon comes to him with this, it's not because it needs to know what to do with this information. That was obvious to it from the moment it found its way under Atsushi's skin, from the regret that the last thing Atsushi said to Tatsuya of his own choice was, fine, we'll just do it your way, that's all the matters to you, isn't it?

You love him, the demon prods again, and Atsushi hates these; the conversations the demon has with him in his own mind. It's still better than having to deal with being an observer as the demon speaks to Tatsuya, though. Given the choice, he'd take this.

That's the problem with being possessed, though. There are so few choices that are left to him.

"I love him," Atsushi replies angrily, and his voice echoes a little, like he's trapped in a box. He knows that his words don't carry any further than his own mind. Tatsuya can't hear him, even though it's his body lying beside Tatsuya's in their bed. Tatsuya sleeps, the light, interrupted sleep that he's been having ever since sharing his bed with a demon. He wakes at the smallest sound these days and Atsushi, trapped as an observer, sees the fear in Tatsuya's eyes before he blinks, as if he's living his entire life expecting the worst to happen. "He means everything to me. If I can't stay by his side, then there's no point in anything. You're not going to understand what that's like."

The demon doesn't reply, apparently satisfied with the answer. Atsushi is left there, floating somewhere between consciousness and nothing, with all his anger, all his love, and no way of expressing either.

He thinks, for a while, that this is the worst that can happen to him, but he supposes that fate isn't done breaking him just yet; not only does the demon start to understand love, it starts to love Tatsuya too.

I love him, it tells Atsushi, while Tatsuya showers, the way he always does between coming home from an exorcism and going out to their local pub.

He's mine, it adds, when they're walking into the crowded pub, its hands—Atsushi's hands—hovering just over Tatsuya's hips, proprietary and not the least bit subtle.

When a drunk happens to ignore Atsushi right there and leans too far into Tatsuya's space, blatantly inviting Tatsuya into his bed, the surge of anger starts with Atsushi, but it ends with the demon.

"No," Atsushi tells the demon as the anger turns into something closer to murderous rage, knowing that it will be ignored anyway.

He's mine, the demon replies, and Atsushi knows there's always a point in demonic possession where the demon starts pushing its limits, in one way or another.

Atsushi just never expected that it would be like this.

my 'hey i didn't get to reply to your fill for my prompt before the round ended but i loved it, so have a remix!' trend continues.

***

Bokuto is jumpier now. Kenma knows they all are, even him, but it’s really obvious in everything Bokuto does. The way his eyes dart from side-to-side as they break into Kenma’s old house, the way he mutters, “Kenma, come on. Come on!” as Kenma flips through his stack of game notes, deciding which to keep, if any. It’s dangerous to be away from the safe house for long; Kenma knows this, but it’s like Bokuto had his whole heart broken by the end of the world.

“Kuroo’s gonna kill me if I don’t get you back safe,” Bokuto mutters. “We got our rations, why are we here?”

“I’m safe,” Kenma says, not really answering the question. He doesn’t say, but what about you? because he already knows the answer. They’re all safe, but not sound.

Bokuto gives a short laugh and runs his fingers through his hair. “You are,” he says.

Kenma stuffs a bag with his notebooks – he takes them all – and whatever other sentimental stuff he can grab: schoolwork, a volleyball, issues of Shonen Jump, Tetsurou’s old 3DS, someone’s kneepads (Shouyou’s? He’ll probably never see Shouyou again, even if they survive this. Miyagi’s just too far away, travel’s just too dangerous), a strip of pictures from the time Tetsurou dragged Kenma into a photobooth. Kenma had complained bitterly and then stolen them from Tetsurou’s mirror a year later.

None of this is necessary for their survival, but that’s not why Kenma wanted to come here. This stuff is necessary if they want to live. It’s funny how that distinction meant nothing to Kenma before.

Kenma shoves the bag in Bokuto’s direction, cocks his weapon as they make their way back toward the bunker, just in case they have to scrap. Kenma may not look it, but he’s the best at it – and his mother told him all those first-person shooters wouldn’t get him anywhere. He ignores the pang in his chest when he thinks of his mother and how she’s gone. The first wave of the disease had taken her, thankfully before it mutated into the shambling horror version. It’s that last wave that attacks the immune. The games were more fun when the zombies were fictional.

They make it back to the bunker without incident, and Kenma lets out his breath in a slow, steady whoosh, a counterpoint to the hummingbird beat of his heart. But things seem normal again as they unzip their gear and distribute the supplies. Bokuto’s grinning now, bellowing out, “Hey, hey, hey!” and letting Akaashi put his scattered pieces back together again once they reach the inner sanctum. The guard at the doors has pushed a cup of hot chocolate into Kenma’s hands – he wonders how long they’ll still have that luxury.

Tetsurou is clearly feeling fifty different emotions at once, but Kenma’s nice about it, calling him Kuro and letting him rifle through their presents. He breathes deep when Tetsurou presses his face into his sweater, and bites his lip when Tetsurou’s arms wrap around him so tightly that he can hardly breathe. If Yaku hadn’t mentioned the crying, Kenma would have pretended not to notice.

That night Kenma spreads the stuff from his house all around his futon and pulls Tetsurou on top of him, so they can lose themselves in each other. He knows there’s not much privacy, just the divider sheets, but Kenma knows how to be quiet. He can pretend his parents are just in the next room and when Tetsurou is whispering, “Is this okay?” it’s just because he’s nervous. Kenma can pretend that nothing’s changed, even though everything has.

Maybe Kenma doesn’t need this stuff, but he wants it. For a little while, he wants to pretend his biggest worry is whether Tetsurou will want extra practices before nationals. He just wants things to go back to before.

Subsequently, he’d had no one to actually teach him how to be a vampire -- he was just making it up as he went along. When he returned to Iwatobi with much, much sharper teeth, he was paranoid that other people would immediately notice that he was different, that he was (technically) dead. But so far, no one seemed to notice -- not his mother or Gou, or even Haru.

(Although that was not quite fair to Haru. He’d told Rin solemnly that the water changed around him, Rin didn’t bother to tell him that vampires not being able to cross over moving water was a myth -- he’d come back from Australia, after all.)

What really pissed him off though was that he was a vampire. He was strong and tireless and not nearly as flammable as legends told -- but he still couldn’t reliably beat Haru in the water. What a waste -- had he really died for this?

He knew immediately that Sousuke was different now. All his senses went haywire when he first caught a different scent in the class, something feral and not right. Sousuke caught his startled look and smiled, the bastard.

Rin waited until they were alone to push Sousuke against the wall and demand to know what happened.

“Shouldn’t I ask you the same question?” Sousuke said, with a slight smirk.

“You’re a fucking werewolf! Sousuke!”

“And you’re a vampire,” Sousuke said, licking the bottom of his lip.

Rin wanted to bite him so badly, to straighten that arrogant curl on his lips.

But he didn’t. Not yet.

After high school, Rin trained in Australia for six months alone before he decided to return to Japan. He missed everyone too much to be away from them for too long, and he was aware, painfully so, that he might have forever, the rest of them didn’t.

(He thought especially about Sousuke. Transformations were hard on a werewolf’s body and most didn’t survived past their fifties.)

He moved into a tiny apartment with Sousuke. They argued about what colors the walls should be and where to put the couch. Finally Rin, frustrated, leaned over and kissed him and came away with a shirtful of white paint.

“Should we do this?” Sousuke asked, uncharacteristically uncertain.

“You don’t want to?” Rin asked skeptically.

“Vampires and werewolves aren’t supposed to --”

“Be roommates?”

“Tch,” Sousuke said impatiently. “I’m being serious.”

“But you’re bad at it, so stop,” Rin said. “Do you want me or not?”

Sousuke answered in the affirmative, as Rin thought he would.
