Tadokoro/Makishima (yowapeda)

Tadokoro is a knight trained and educated his entire life to prepare him for slaying dragons. Makishima is the dragon. Well, dragon shapeshifter, to be specific.

(Bonus points for Eastern-flavored dragons / dragon mythos, maybe? If you're feeling that? Or just "less medieval Europe" tbh.)
