Bonus Round 1: Memory

Bonus Round 1: Memory

Let's start our summer by looking at the past—things that happened in canon, or maybe in an AU, or maybe just as wishful thinking...

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on June 9 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post! You prompt should consist of one scenario beginning with the phrase "Remember when", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from our list of nominated fandoms.
    • Your prompts can take the form of recalling canon facts/events ("Remember when Nozomi and Eli got parfaits after school?"), non-canon events ("Remember when Megumi and Jin met at the Tadokoro Family Reunion?"), or somewhere in-between ("Remember when Bokuto and Kenma first met?"). Headcanons and AUs are welcome!
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Rei & Nagisa). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Rei/Nagisa). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Post fills by leaving a responding comment to a prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

    Fills 21+: 2 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

    Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only.

With all due respect: fuck you, lira. I can't believe this is the first thing I wrote for SASO.

Oikawa makes a list. At the beginning of his list, he writes a header.

He underlines it.

EVIDENCE PERTAINING TO THE CASE OF KOMINATO RYOUSUKE'S EXTRA-TERESTRIAL ORIGIN

At first, it was only a passing joke, something he said to provoke a reaction. Now, well... now, he has a list.

  1. Hair.

"He doesn't dye it," Kuramochi-san had said, bluntly. And then continued to say, "No, really," when Oikawa hadn't replied.

"But," Oikawa had begun after turning over this fact for a few seconds, "it's... pink."

Kuramochi had shrugged and resumed swinging his bat, making the air hiss with its speed. "I don't I know what else to tell you. Haruichi's is dyed, saw the bottle, and Ryou said it was to copy him."

Oikawa had frowned and let his mind turn over possibilities. "Kuramochi-senpai, are you absolutely certain he doesn't just—"

"Yes," Kuramochi had snapped, and the heat in his cheeks suggested the reason for his certainty was from more than close inspection of Ryousuke's head.

Oikawa had dropped the matter, but didn't forget.

  2. Vibrations.

No one would notice unless they were already paying attention, the sound that eminates from Kominato Ryousuke underlies his presence like a watch's tick: invisible unless you're already listening. And much like a watch's tick, once you've heard it it becomes very difficult to ignore.

And Oikawa had been listening, lingering close to his senpai with a perky smile fixed on his face, exuding the doting kouhai ready to do his senpai's bidding in a transparent front for a more suspicious motive. But Ryousuke hadn't seemed to mind.

He wasn't expecting much to come of his time spent observing him, but that was before Ryousuke sent Oikawa, the dutiful kouhai, to fetch him a drink.

Oikawa had completed the errand happily enough. The trip to the vending machine and back had taken scant minutes and he had pressed the bottle of warm, herbal lemon drink into his hand without a second thought.

That was, he hadn't given it a second thought until Ryousuke's fingers lingers a second longer than was polite and Oikawa's heart began pounding in his ears, because passing from Ryousuke's cool fingertips through into Oikawa's skin flowed vibrations. And with that had come awareness of the sound: a low hum that surrounds Ryousuke.

Oikawa had drawn his fingers away slowly, not wanting to break his concentration and lose the thread of sound so quickly. Oikawa had licked his lips and asked whether the drink was acceptable.

"Ah, it's fine, Tooru-kun," Ryousuke had said, waving him back, and with his gesture the thrumming sound wafted closer.

Oikawa had itched to move closer and press his ear to Ryousuke's chest but he had kept his restraint locked in place and nodded, said "Of course, Ryou-senpai," and made his way off to other tasks, mind still reeling with his discovery.

It was at that point that Oikawa wondered whether Ryousuke has a heart that beats under the buzz that fills his body.

  3. Eyes (lack of).

It was a terrible moment to pay attention to it. He regretted it afterwards, though Oikawa knows he did everything he could have and should have at the time as well as discovering that behind Ryousuke's eyelids that he keeps squinted shut is nothing but darkness and that pervasive sound.

Ryousuke had slipped and fallen, face twisted in pain, and in his dash from home base, Oikawa had seen everything. Or rather, seen that there was nothing.

Buzzing had filled Oikawa's ears, only some of it from his own body pushing his blood through his veins in fear for one of his players. The rest came from were Ryousuke's eyes would be if he had them.

    But he doesn't.

  4. Animal reaction.

The last thing on Oikawa's list is from a simple anecdote that makes Oikawa shudder from the memory.

He had followed Ryousuke off the grounds on a run. It hadn't been difficult to follow him, there are only so many paths in the area to follow, and Ryousuke had made his way through to a park, off the track and up a rise, away from the children playing under the watchful gaze of their parents in a small clearing with a single tree in the middle.

The tree had wide leaves, though Oikawa never found out what kind it was.

Oikawa had approached cautiously, moving with sure and steady motions to reduce the amount of sound he made.

He had stopped at the edge of the clearing in the shadow of the surrounding trees, unsure of what he was seeing.

As he had continued to watch, the nature of the scene before him had become clear. Embedded in the tree, engulfing two thirds of its main branches, and matching the buzz that follows Ryousuke's movements, was a beehive.

Oikawa hadn't known if a single bee remained inside it, because the only ones that had been present circled Ryousuke, or crawled over his skin.

Ryousuke's eyes were open and relaxed in that moment, and he had smiled.

The bees had treated him like he was something to be worshiped. They swarmed in and out of his empty eye sockets, crawled through his lips and onto his tongue that he obligingly offered for them to rest on, poking it out between his lips and disrupting his smile.

Oikawa had been transfixed. Unable to move. He had barely registered that Ryousuke had lifted himself from the ground until he was only feet away and Oikawa could see the soft colouring on the bees that crawled over his skin.

"Ryousuke-senpai," he had begun to say, but Ryousuke had cut him off, somehow speaking over the roaring sound of the bees and Oikawa's instinctive fear.

"You shouldn't worry about things that don't concern you, Tooru-kun," he had said.

Oikawa hadn't known then why Ryousuke had done what he did, and he still doesn't. Ryousuke had leaned in closer and closer, brushed his lips over Oikawa's just shy of being able to call it a kiss. Oikawa had felt one of the insects crawl out from between Ryousuke's lips and onto his own skin as Ryousuke moved his mouth over to Oikawa's ear.

"Will you get me another drink, Tooru-kun?" he had asked, and begun running again, back to the usual path to return to Seidou.

Oikawa had stayed rooted to the spot until the bees that lingered after Ryousuke's departure returned to their hive, his mind running in circles to process what had just happened.

When he eventually followed Ryousuke back, he had looked him directly in where Ryousuke's eyes would be if he were human, elation filling him as a grin had spread over his own face.

"The same as always, Ryou-senpai," he had chirped.

And Ryousuke had waved him off without thanks.

I Love it, Oikawa making a list to document Ryousuke and being so inappropriately(?) delighted at finding out his secret. Oikawa wanting to put his head to Ryousuke's chest to see if it hums and thrums under his ear, NICE. The descriptions of Ryousuke's alienness, so enticing. I love it

And then Sean Bean and Channing Tatum show up just to bend a knee to the space bee queen, Oikawa doesn't know why he feels so jilted

I'M SO FUCKING HAPPY, YOU'RE WELCOME!!

I love the list framing, and I love how methodical Oikawa is in his weird little investigation. But most of all I love the description of the bees because this is all that I ever wanted out of my horrible headcanon and, there it is. (I also love Oikawa wanting to press his ear to Ryousuke's chest, obviously, and the little nod to kuraryou, uhh hhhhhuh Kuramochi, we know why YOU know about Ryousuke's real hair color.)

Pets you so fondly, what a good dead bird gift, what a good cat you are, thank you Icie. ♥

SHAKES FIST IN YOUR DIRECTION

I'm glad you liked it, I too love the bees and if they live up to your standards I must have done good.

(Oikawa wants to inspect his senpai as closely as possible to see how he works but if he did that he'd lose his cute kouhai privileges and he likes those.

And yep. We sure do. Oikawa thinks it's cute. Kuramochi seems appropriately respectful of the alien so will allow this.)

Purrs happily. I did a good first thing.
