Akaashi's first memory of Bokuto is not of dusty temples and stone statues, nor is it of plates and plates of food laid before the majestic Koutarou river.
No, Akaashi's first memory of Bokuto is --
-
Akaashi grows up hearing things like you're so beautiful, and prettiest face in whole of Fukurodani, and a face like that, you could seduce even the Gods.
You're so beautiful takes on a different meaning, when the River God is angry and the villagers are suffering for it. They've lost their livestock to the flood four times this year, and the people are getting hungry, desperate. Afraid. When the news of the sacrificial ritual makes its way around town, there are several conjectures as to who the object of sacrifice will be, but deep down everyone knows: there is only one option. Akaashi knows, too. It's awfully telling, when people refuse to meet his eyes in the streets, their expressions a mixture of guilt and relief.
(And if Akaashi doesn't mind, it's because --)
You're so beautiful, the villagers whisper, almost in prayer, as they push Akaashi blindfolded into the blue dark.
-
'Hey, you! You're allowed to look up, you know.'
And so Akaashi does. It doesn't come as a surprise, Akaashi thinks, that Bokuto Koutarou is nothing like what the villagers depicted him to be - bearded, ancient, unsmiling. Akaashi's seen the stone statues before, four-foot tall monstrosities collecting thick layers of dust in the temples.
Instead, Bokuto Koutarou has eyes brilliant as the midday sun, and a curved, wicked mouth that can eat the entire world raw.
'What's your name?' Bokuto asks, unblinking. 'Y'know, you look awfully familiar.'
'Akaashi Keiji,' Akaashi replies, breath hitching a little; he's been dreaming of this moment for fifteen years now.
'Akaashi Keiji,' Bokuto repeats, wicked. He speaks with the conviction of someone who knows that their word is absolute; Akaashi is sure that greater men have trembled before lesser things. 'Well, Keiji, you're mine now.'
-
Three months later, Fukurodani Village reaps their biggest harvest in twenty years.
-
Maybe, like this: Bokuto, in one of his drunken rampages, insults a Spirit or another. As punishment, the Spirit dives into Bokuto's residence in the middle of the night, and curses Akaashi to invisibility for the rest of eternity; Bokuto will never find his lover again.
Or, like this: Akaashi falls in love with one of the chambermaids, a torrid love affair that makes its way to the ears of Bokuto. In a moment of blind rage, Bokuto condemns Akaashi to purgatory for the rest of eternity.
The truth, of course, is nothing as dramatic. At the end of the day, when Akaashi sits in his room, days falling away like sand in his palms, waiting, always waiting, it is simply because Bokuto is a God, and Akaashi -- Akaashi is only Akaashi.
-
Akaashi's first memory of Bokuto is--
-
Akaashi Keiji is three years old when he wanders into the Koutarou River on a feverish summer's night, and drowns himself by accident. When he appears at the front porch the next morning, sound asleep but otherwise unscathed, everyone waves the incident off as a miracle.
Akaashi knows better. In the years to come he will replay the night's memory over and over again, the same fever dream: of the pair of arms that enveloped around him, of an ageless God bathed in black and yellow robes, and a piercing gaze that gleamed golden.

there are lips pressed against the nape of keiji's neck. it's soft, absolutely gentle against the notch of keiji's spine. warm breath fans against his skin and a larger hand covers his own, rough skin rubbing against his fingers as they separate, the space taken up by the other's fingers.
it's suffocating in the room, the air coming into the room from the open window dense, but keiji doesn't mind. he can barely breathe, but it's okay. he's okay. he's more than okay as the lips move further down, exploring his bare skin.
keiji squeezes the hand gently, trying to ground himself, his sanity. he can barely hold onto his composure as another hand sneaks into his curly locks, keeps his hair in a tight grip.
the hand pulls. keiji can't help but moan, goosebumps breaking out on his skin as head is lifted slightly. his heart is beating fast-- he can hear his pulse race, but he pays that no mind now. all he can do is think about this, about this warmth he's feeling.
"you're mine. don't you forget that." a voice whispers in his ear, and keiji's mind blanks. he responds without thinking, the words falling seamlessly from his lips.
"i'm yours."
--
keiji jerks awake, his breathing heavy and his eyes open wide. he can still feel the calloused fingers against his smooth skin, can still feel the weight of lips against his spine, but he's alone. there are no fingers, there is no voice.
he sits up in his bed, runs his hands up and down his face.
his lips tingle. he presses his fingers against them and shakes his head. he's convinced he's lost his mind-- there's absolutely no way that could've been real. but at the same time it just felt so real, and a small part of him wanted it to be.
keiji settles back into bed and pulls the covers over his head. when he goes back to sleep, he doesn't dream at all.
--
keiji finds himself in a garden this time, the full moon high in the sky and illuminating the area along with torches blazing along the path. he's sitting on a marble bench, the cold from the stone seeping through his thin clothes.
he's waiting. the night is silent save for the crickets chirping underneath the bushes and in the grass.
a figure emerges from the maze of rosebushes and keiji stands, hears himself speak.
"you've kept me waiting long enough." the figure, a man with black and white hair, smiles. bows. keiji responds accordingly, and the man takes that as a signal to come forward, coming too close for comfort but keiji doesn't mind.
he has a feeling he'd never mind anything this man does.
"my apologies, your highness. i'm afraid i had some business to which i had to attend." the man's voice is low, a murmur that could barely be heard. keiji wouldn't have if he weren't so close to the man, breaths mingling together.
keiji feels the pressure of lips against his own, feels the warmth of the other pressed against him. the kiss is intense, passionate, and he feels like his heart is about to burst with how much emotion the other is making him feel.
"you're mine, keiji." he doesn't say anything.
"you know, we can still run away from all of this. we can escape tonight, go somewhere far away where it'll be just you and me. forever." the man sounds like he's pleading.
keiji's heart breaks.
--
there's a feeling of longing when keiji wakes up in the morning, his heart heavy in his chest. he shakes it off, and gets out of bed.
"you're mine." the words echo in his head. he can taste them on the tip of his tongue.
keiji isn't anyone's, and he'd prefer to keep it that way.
--
it's bright, much to keiji's annoyance. it's much too bright, the room too ornately decorated, but he supposes that is to be expected.
today's his wedding day, after all.
the clothes on his body are much too heavy. they constrict his chest and he can't breathe well, an unpleasant feeling this time around. he doesn't like this feeling, he doesn't like this setting, he doesn't like anything about the situation.
keiji's sitting on a throne made of gold, and by his side is a fair lady, equally dressed up. his new wife. the queen.
nothing about this is right to keiji, but he has no choice. this is the life he leads, this is the life he was born into. there is no other option for him.
the crown is heavy on his head. he straightens his back.
and in the distance, he sees the familiar mop of black and white hair and his heart races. he wants to get up, wants to run into the other's arms and leave this all behind. keiji regrets the decision to not go with him, regrets going through with this wedding.
it's duty and honor that keeps him seated, that keeps him from going after the man.
he watches as the man kisses his wrist. keiji kisses his own in response and tries not to cry when the man turns his back and walks out of the hall.
--
keiji's eyes are puffy in the morning when he wakes up, and he has to blink a few times to clear the blurriness. they burn, as if he'd been crying.
his pillow is wet. he had been.
it's keiji's first day of high school and he already doesn't have the motivation to go after having a dream like that. there's a dead weight in his bones and he moves sluggishly from place to place.
it all just seems insignificant.
he gets through the day with no incident. he doesn't speak to anyone, and no one speaks to him. just the way he likes it.
it's the first day of school, but he already has volleyball practice, having been recruited onto the famed team. it takes a little effort for him to slide the door to the gym open, but he stops in his tracks as soon as he does.
black and white hair.
golden eyes.
"you're mine." the voice in his head whispers and keiji's suffocating again.
"koutarou." keiji says and he's not even sure if that's the other's name, but the man looks shocked.
"i'm sorry, do i know you?"
