FILL: TEAM MIYUKI KAZUYA/MIYUKI KAZUYA, T
1,275 words
Shinkai Hayato would do anything for his little sister. That is a fact that would never change. Pushing the shovel into the dirt for the first time, Hayato wonders if he should have taken the sticker off of the spade first. 'Too late' he figures, dumping the pile of dirt aside and beginning to shovel a little too aggressively. 'Too late, too late, just too late.'
Too late for the damn sticker, too late to drop Yuuto off at home, too late to go to the police, too late to pull the knife from the stranger's gut— the stranger heaped in his trunk.
Gritting his teeth, Hayato goes at it a little harder, and soon he's shoveling the dirt with an intensity rivaling on manic. Every noise he hears winds him tighter, the breeze ruffling the leaves, the distant hoots of owls. At least no real roads are nearby, no approaching car noises to send Hayato spiraling into a panic mode.
Yuuto watches silently from the car and Hayato wonders if he should have told her to get out. It couldn't be nice being in the same car as a dead body. He could start stinking up the place any moment now, Hayato doesn't know, he's never dealt in corpses. His own morbid thoughts cause him to fumble the shovel, dropping it with a soft thump. Yuuto is watching. He sees her jump lightly from behind the glass, tense.
Hayato makes a hand motion, 'get out of the car', it says, while he bends to retrieve the shovel.
The gentle opening of the car door is uncomfortably loud in the still night, Yuuto's footsteps slow and approaching.
"I didn't want you in there." Hayato explains, his voice an odd shaped rasp.
"Why, it's not like the guy's getting up." Yuuto doesn't look her brother in the eyes. It's probably easier for her that way, Hayato understands, but her words are still a crushing blow to his thus far resilient psyche. It's true, the guy wasn't getting up, he was never getting up again. It's 11:45 now, he's been dead for almost an hour.
The older Shinkai sibling swallows and keeps digging, head down.
The rhythmic sound of displacing dirt fills the silence for a while, before Yuuto speaks again.
"Won't you be digging for too long, how deep are you going to make it?" She stands nearby, shivering slightly. Hayato takes off his jacket and hands it to her before it gets too sweaty.
"It'll be deep enough." Is all he can manage, but she is persistent, speaking in a flat tone that Hayato just can't read.
"How are you sure? Shouldn't we be burying him under a dead animal or something."
"Yuuto." He warns tightly, sparing her a glance. She is gazing at him steadily now, red eyes lidded yet sharp.
"Yuuto." He repeats in a softer tone, "No more dead things talk; plants grow so fast in this place that nobody will find it; we'll be fine." Hayato takes a breath.
"We'll be okay." He mutters to the mound of dirt, for his own benefit before resuming his task. No time to dwell on things, act now, no questions, action is your get out of jail free card.
Standing at the foot of his currently shallow, makeshift grave, Hayato swallows, hopes the words come out as evenly and clearly as possible.
"You were never with me tonight." Yuuto's eyes fix on him once more. He can't bring himself to look at her.
Hayato laughs. It's only 10:30, their parents were already asleep, they wouldn't notice Yuuto coming in late anyways. Yuuto is doing a terribly accurate impression of a professor and Hayato laughs. He'll take her home after frozen yogurt-
"I brought you home right after the movie, you were at mom and dads, you did homework and went to bed."
-after frozen yogurt they walk back to Hayato's car, a man interrupts, walking straight up to them with a knife drawn. He wants their wallets, he wants their phones, he wants to see if Yuuto's backpack has a laptop in it. He gets impatient, he gets handsy, Hayato gets confrontational. The knife nicks him on the forearm, but the fist swinging from the opposite direction hits his face directly and sends him sprawling-
"I was mugged while getting snacks after the movie, that's where I got hurt and that's where my phone broke. They guy ran off, he seemed drunk and looking to start a fight, who knows what happened after he left." He can't believe his voice is staying so calm.
-when he gets up from the ground Yuuto is close to the man, too close, he must have grabbed her but she— she' holding the mugger's knife, both hands on the handle, driving it up- oh god, up into the stranger's stomach and then she twists, her teeth bared, a mockery of a grin-
"What if mom and dad are awake when we get home?" Yuuto's voice is quiet.
-blood, fresh and angry and red, spilling from the strangers gut, pouring down Yuuto's arms, his shocked face almost comical. Dark blood sprays past her hands, she twists again and the guy collapses, going silent and still after a wheeze and oh god oh god oh no-
"They won't be. Its late." Hayato has never smoked a cigarette before, but he feels like he could start now and be pretty justified.
-he takes the knife from Yuuto's trembling hands and drops it. They should go to the police. It's honestly self defense, right? Only it isn't that simple now that someone is dead. Yuuto… Yuuto can't go to jail. Yuuto still has to finish high school, they wouldn't try her as an adult, right? Hayato feels like puking.
Finishing his digging task doesn't take as long as Hayato would like. He dreads the next one too much, hefting the guy from his trunk, stabbing him again and wiping off both of their prints from the knife. Yuuto can't go to jail. That's the bottom line. If someone found the body, if they somehow traced it back to the Shinkais, Hayato would immediately throw himself into the fire.
-a car blanket has to be sacrificed, but at least it keeps the blood in one place. A shovel, a tarp, bought at a 24 hour store, are tossed in the back seat. Yuuto has stopped crying, sitting in the front seat with her knees drawn to her chest, eyes dull. Hayato has no idea what's going on in her head but he does have a pretty good idea in his mind about a rarely traversed bike trail a few miles out.
It's 2 am by the time they're driving home. Yuuto stares at her knees, the radio playing hushed staticky tones.
"I feel like it should be raining." She murmurs, "It's always raining when they dump bodies in the movies."
Hayato laughs humorlessly. "It's supposed to rain tomorrow, that good enough for you?"
"I would feel better if it did." Her posture relaxes as she stares out the window. He trusts her not to give anything away. Yuuto has always been an enigma to him and to most everyone else. She's strong, she's resilient, she probably doesn't need protecting. Hayato hopes he made the right decision anyway. The nightmares he can live with. Yuuto being made to suffer through police and trials and possibly juvie? That he couldn't.
Stopping at a red light near the house they grew up in, Hayato looks towards the passenger's seat. Yuuto smiles. The older Shinkai hopes she knows he would take the fall for her. He thinks she does, she's smart.
'Ruthless', his brain supplies. The gleam of her teeth remind him of the guy's face, of the blood still on her hands.
Swallowing back the bile rising in the back of his throat, Hayato smiles back.

Re: FILL: TEAM MIYUKI KAZUYA/MIYUKI KAZUYA, T
Hayato determined to protect his sister, despite his ill-at-ease, despite his regret and the rising sickness, despite her bloodied hands mmmm, I love that particular refrain of 'too late too late' in the beginning
Yuuto being the one who carried out the act, ruthless and without hesitation, to be the one that survives past that desperate grappling moment; Yuuto having the hollow shock-induced clarify of mind to make suggestions to put off the trail; i just - clenches fist.
THANK YOU AJ

I love Yuuto being the ruthless one, I love Shinkai being a little unnerved by that even as he maintains his loyalty to blood. Your words are good you've done so well I'm delighted.

(came back and read this a second time)
I've said it before, but I'm so thrilled seeing how your prose has evolved in the time we've known each other. This was so taut and crisp, and Yuuto is so vividly drawn. I just. ;; I love.
