Bonus Round 1: Memory

Bonus Round 1: Memory

Let's start our summer by looking at the past—things that happened in canon, or maybe in an AU, or maybe just as wishful thinking...

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on June 9 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post! You prompt should consist of one scenario beginning with the phrase "Remember when", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from our list of nominated fandoms.
    • Your prompts can take the form of recalling canon facts/events ("Remember when Nozomi and Eli got parfaits after school?"), non-canon events ("Remember when Megumi and Jin met at the Tadokoro Family Reunion?"), or somewhere in-between ("Remember when Bokuto and Kenma first met?"). Headcanons and AUs are welcome!
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Rei & Nagisa). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Rei/Nagisa). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Post fills by leaving a responding comment to a prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

    SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

    For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
    Fills 4-10: 10 points each
    Fills 11-20: 5 points each
    Fills 21+: 2 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

    Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only.

Have a question? Check The FAQ first. If you still need help, feel free to contact the mods. Happy fanworking!

FILL: Team Iwaizumi Hajime/Oikawa Tooru, G

Kageyama Tobio is:

a) 15 years old
b) yet another setter
c) someone Tooru’s still unsure whether to strike off as a puppy or a pest

(It starts like this.)

Oikawa Tooru doesn’t meet Kageyama Tobio at a goukon or a bar nor through an online dating app; it’s nothing of that sort actually. He first meets Tobio at his old junior high school because he was back in Miyagi for the semester break, and, well. Maybe he just wanted to pop by and hear some schoolgirls go oohh and aahh, whoever is that handsome senpai and see how far the volleyball team has come since his time.

The girls do swoon over him, and the team sure has evolved but what Tooru doesn’t bargain for when he slips into Kitagawa Daiichi’s gym is this kid with the worst bowl cut he’s ever seen in his life to come stomping up to him with a notepad in tow.

If only Tooru wasn’t all too used to pulling off puppy-dog eyes himself, he’d count himself impressed by the kid’s attempt at it.

“E-excuse me.” The boy stammers, fidgeting nervously. “Do you happen to be Oikawa Tooru?”

Tooru’s eyebrows as well as his suspicions rise. “Yes?”

The boy just suddenly shines. “Really? Truly? Are you the Oikawa Tooru that got offered to Toudai and then scouted for the National squad in just your first year? What routine do you keep to, how did you get so good at feints, which kind of protein powder do you—“

“Hold it, hold it, hold it!!” Tooru isn’t too convinced if he should feel honoured to have such a spirited young fan or a spirited young stalker. In fact, he isn’t too convinced about this whole incident at all.

He holds up his right fist and raises his index finger. “Firstly, what’s your name?”

Stalker-kun blinks for a bit at that before hastily bowing. So, Tooru thinks, the kid does have manners after all. “It’s Kageyama Tobio. I’m…I’m sorry for rushing at you like that.”

Tooru hums, then, raises another following finger. “Right. Tobio-chan. Secondly, how do you know about me?”

The puppy-dog eyes and megawatt shine come back on full blast as he prattles about from having seen Oikawa’s recorded matches at Kitagawa Daiichi during prefectural tournaments to his stint as Aobajousai’s volleyball captain in senior high school, and then the local district’s interviews of him—

Tooru may bask in attention but he has very amazingly found his limits to it now with no thanks whatsoever to Stalker-kun. Faintly, he stops him in mid-barrage. “Thank you, Tobio-chan. I appreciate both your enthusiasm and your honesty.”

The boy tilts his head slightly in confusion. “…you’re welcome, Oikawa-san?”

Kitagawa Daiichi’s current coach conveniently chooses that moment to yell at the kid to get back to practice; Tooru gladly watches the kid give another hurried bow towards him and run back to the court. As it turns out, he learns that “Tobio-chan” is the latest star of the team when the coach moves to fill Tooru in on most of the volleyball club’s present details.

“The boy’s still got a lot ahead of him in terms of team interaction,” the coach sighs heavily, “but what can I say? He’s a genius in everything else.”

“A genius.” Tooru repeats. Dully.

“Yep, a genius. Just like that other marvel, Ushijima Wakatoshi? That his name?,” the man goes on, oblivious to the sudden stiffness in Tooru’s posture. He simply nods to confirm his query.

For all of the boy’s awkwardness in front of Tooru earlier, Kageyama Tobio’s tosses on court are as sharp as they are accurate, the ball lands right in front of his teammates’ palm as they jump to spike it down. There seems to be an underlying tension between them and him though; Tooru can see it in the way the other players' don’t cheer or run up for a hug or high five after each scored point.

Tooru almost pities him.

Almost, because the next second he notices Tobio’s behind the court line ready to serve.

Tooru sees the jump serve coming from a mile away because he’s been through those very same motions himself countless of times: the first throw of the ball upwards, the immediate lean forward to maximise speed, and finally, that arched leap towards the air to connect with the ball above.

This is a ghost of Tooru’s trademark jump serve, but ghosts still haunt anyway.

Oikawa Tooru is 20 years old, Kageyama Tobio is 15. There is a sea of 5 years between the two of them but it is that yawning distance that keeps Tooru from unconsciously hating Tobio on the spot.

(Perhaps in another life, in a harder, infinitely more frustrating one, Tobio and him might have been rivals, natural talent pitted against sheer force of will.

Perhaps they don’t get along there. Perhaps sometimes they do.)

But in this life, perhaps Tooru snorts at how Tobio wobbles upon landing and walks up to show how the jump serve is really done.

And perhaps later, they exchange email addresses to keep in touch and watch each other grow in the same sport.

(Perhaps.)

(over the line, we think twice
“It’s not the way,” they say,
but it will have to do
and, I’ll speak to you in time)

oh my god, I loved this so much, I love how you threw tobio and oikawa in a different context from canon, fleshed them out wonderfully, and still kept them true to their canon selves. this was so clever - of course tobio wouldve committed every detail of Tooru to the back of his hand, and of course Oikawa wouldve caved in to that earnestness eventually --

tbh I had no idea what to expect when I threw this out as a prompt, but u delivered beautifully, thank u so much for writing this!!

HELLO HI I BRIEFLY DROPPED IN ON YOU ON TWITTER TODAY

And I am back to actually gush over this because I am So Fond. I love the way you've framed this, with the little snapshot of their actual first meeting sandwiched between the way things are and the way things could be in the future. Your writing is really crisp and spare and I enjoy your Oikawa voice but what really got me is the ending, the invocation of canon and how much rougher it is, and the maybe-promise that in this timeline, oikage can have it easier. I choked up a little, fondly, over the parenthetical in the end piece, this is so nice bless you.
