FILL: Team Azumane Asahi/Sawamura Daichi/Sugawara Koushi, T
word count: 1643
The rigidity with which Kageyama is sitting upright in front of Suga is, to be frank, worrisome. Suga feels like he’s interviewing a potential new hire; like he should be about forty-three, in a rumpled suit and failing his way through a rocky second marriage. This isn’t going to work at all. If he’s going to teach Kageyama anything about—
A breeze blows across the park, and Suga’s sweaty neck is grateful for it.
“Helping you figure this out is honestly okay by me, but if you’re uncomfortable—“
“I’m not.” Kageyama says, with a bluntness Suga is beginning to recognize. It’s the same bluntness Kageyama had about him when he walked into the gym all those months ago, rigid, needing to prove something to someone.
It’s the curse of being a third year— learning these little things about your team just in time for it not to matter all that much.
Smiling as normally as possible, Suga nods, an unconvinced jerk of his head. What else is he going to do with this situation?
“Okay.” Suga gets it. Really, he does. It hasn’t been so long that he’s forgotten what its like to buzz with nervousness, staring at someone with the hopes they’ll want what you want. “Well, if this is your first k—“
“Its not my first.” Kageyama is quick to correct, polite for all that he’s cut Sugawara off mid-sentence. His blush accompanies his naturally sour look of disappointment. “I’m just not… good at it.”
Suga takes this information in stride, even though he’s suddenly intensely curious about who Kageyama’s first was. Why they didn’t figure this out together, instead of leaving Kageyama to stumble through it later on.
“I’m not promising I’m an expert either.” Suga can’t help but tease. It doubles as fair warning, for whatever comes next— he may be Kageyama’s senpai, but he is still just a High School student.
Kageyama looks vaguely like he’s trying to swallow something and breathe at the same time—a look they’ve all come to understand means I’m trying to figure out if this is okay to say. Suga gives him time.
“You look like you would be nice,” Kageyama finally manages. He’s staring directly at Suga’s mouth when he adds, “To kiss.”
Its sweet, even if the way Kageyama is staring is a little… intense. In time, it might even be smooth. Kageyama just has to work on his technique.
Which is, after all, what they’re here for today.
“Then, kiss me.” Suga says, grinning at Kageyama like he should know it’s that simple.
Kageyama comes at him with a lunge, propelled forward on the single-minded desire to please, and Suga experiences a moment of panic where he’s sure he’s going to end up in the hospital.
“Okay-“ Suga jerks back, narrowly avoiding Kageyama’s face smashing into his own. Not laughing at the near miss is the hardest thing Suga’s ever done, but he is determined to be a Good Senpai about this. “Okay, hold on. That needs to go much more slowly.”
Reaching across the space between them, Suga touches the softest parts of Kageyama’s face—the swell of his cheeks, leading himself to the curve of his ear. “I’m not going anywhere. You want to make me understand that you don’t want me to.”
Kageyama looks a little worried, and a little starstruck; like he wasn’t expecting this session to have a didactic element to it. Suga supposes the ability to keep calm and talk even with butterflies fluttering at the back of your mouth comes with experience. It’s not a helpful thing to say, so he doesn’t say it.
Instead, he smiles at Kageyama and asks, “Do you want to kiss me?”
Kageyama nods, fiercely, his eyes wide and unabashedly hopeful.
“Then you should say it.” Suga brushes his fingers through the hair hidden behind Kageyama’s ear. “Hearing that you want to kiss, makes a person want to kiss you back.”
It takes Kageyama a minute to find his tongue, or maybe just to shake off the spell of being so close to Sugawara, but eventually he manages, “Sugawara-san, can I- I’d like to kiss you- please.”
The formality of the request makes it a little weird, but the honesty with which Kageyama delivers the request makes up for it. Suga makes a mental note to mention it to Kageyama later, when he doesn’t have his hands fisted atop his knees like anchors.
“I would like that,” Suga says, feeling that spark of anticipation catch in his chest.
Kageyama doesn’t move, watching Suga the way he watches the arc of a volleyball after he’s tossed it, partly memorizing its path, and partly ingraining the feel of it into himself. Suga gives him a minute before tilting his head and asking, “Is there something wrong?”
“How will I-“ Kageyama’s eyebrows draw down, his concentration turning his face a little too severe for the situation. “Know where your mouth is?”
Suga deserves a medal for the restraint he’s showing. He’s fairly certain he wasn’t this clueless—but then again, maybe he just didn’t think about it this much. He’d seen his chance and took it, fearlessness bought on the wings of recklessness. Kageyama, it would seem, is more methodical.
“You don’t have to keep your hands to yourself.” Suga suggests. “If you want to, you can touch my face, to give yourself a more tactile guide?”
To prove it, Suga slips his fingers into the ball of Kageyama’s fist, uncurling his clenched fingers until his palm is free. Kageyama catches on then, moving his hand to rest on the shape of Sugawara’s jaw. For all that Kageyama can be hamfisted and awkward, his touch is gentle, and it’s the easiest thing in the world for Sugawara to lean into it.
This time, when Kageyama leans in, he goes slowly, and Suga feels a familiar surge of pride. It’s a much better feeling than the pangs of jealousy he’d had so often at the beginning of the year. Lightly, Kageyama’s mouth brushes Suga’s, dry and just a whisper of a touch. His hesitancy is sweet, a reminder of how he came to Suga for help in the first place.
A breeze blows through the park, gracing them with a brief reprieve from the Spring warmth quickly melting into Summer heat. Kageyama’s bangs tickle when they brush against Suga’s face, and he smiles into the kiss, taking the reigns to demonstrate how.
Kissing Kageyama’s bottom lip, once chastely, the next with just a hint of opened mouth, Suga can feel the shudder of Kageyama’s breath on his mouth. At least he’s remembering to breathe. Suga takes Kageyama through a spectrum of kisses, until Kageyama moves in closer, his knees bumping against Suga’s. The transition between kissing and being kissed is subtle, more an act of intent than an act itself, but Suga is impressed nonetheless.
Didn’t Kageyama say he wasn’t good at this? What exactly is it that he needed help with?
There’s no time to mull it over when Kageyama’s other hand is settling on his jaw, his palms reciprocal parenthesis on either side of Suga’s face. With the heat of the day settled into the ground like the warmth off an oven, their closeness should be unbearable, but its more pleasant than anything else. Suga opens his mouth, just enough to catch Kageyama’s bottom lip between his own, and Kageyama’s breath stutters out of him.
A feeling close to invincibility swells in him, and Suga’s fingers absently curl in Kageyama’s hair,
Kageyama’s kisses turn a little more urgent then, and Sugawara allows it, too swept up in the moment to pay attention to the pace. Its not until Kageyama plants three small kisses in rapid-fire succession, losing rhythm for speed, that Suga pulls away, just enough to whisper, “Slower, Tobio.”
In front of him, Kageyama stiffens, suddenly, and obviously, uncomfortable with something. Suga’s about to say something about it, but Kageyama leans in again, determined in the way his mouth presses against Sugawara’s. He lingers, a tactile reminder of his newness, and his readiness to learn anything Suga is willing to teach.
Pulling Kageyama closer by the nape of his neck, at the same time he pulls Kageyama’s bottom lip between his own, is maybe a little sneaky—but Suga did promise to teach him. For his part, Kageyama seems exactly the opposite of bothered. When he slides his hands into Suga’s hair, his touch feels more assured, like he isn’t worried about being rushed through.
A thicket of brilliantly colored barberry secludes them from the rest of the world, and in the quiet heat of the day’s end, they take their time. Suga loses track of what Kageyama’s learned and what Kageyama’s done, easily leaving the pretense of instruction behind for the simple pleasure of kissing someone who wants to be kissed. Somewhere between Kageyama focusing on Sugawara’s bottom lip, and Suga introducing his teeth to the equation, Kageyama’s hands slide out of Suga’s hair to touch his neck.
Hot all over and a little lightheaded, Suga pulls away.
Thanks to Suga’s hands, Kageyama’s hair has a distinctly disheveled look about it, and Suga wouldn’t be surprised if his looked the same. His mouth feels pleasantly oversensitive from all the kissing, Suga suddenly hyperaware of the rhythm of his own breathing. Across from him, Kageyama is doing a terrible job of being subtle, his eyes lidded and focused on the part of Sugawara’s mouth. All of it is strangely flattering, in its own way.
Knowing they should call it a day, Suga finds his steadiest voice to ask, “Think you’ve got the hang of it?”
Kageyama nods, vigorously, and its so obvious he wants to show off what he’s learned. Suga doesn’t mean to, but he grins, licking his lips with the action.
“Then, kiss me.”
