Bonus Round 1: Memory

Bonus Round 1: Memory

Let's start our summer by looking at the past—things that happened in canon, or maybe in an AU, or maybe just as wishful thinking...

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on June 9 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post! You prompt should consist of one scenario beginning with the phrase "Remember when", along with any ship/ot3/etc. from our list of nominated fandoms.
    • Your prompts can take the form of recalling canon facts/events ("Remember when Nozomi and Eli got parfaits after school?"), non-canon events ("Remember when Megumi and Jin met at the Tadokoro Family Reunion?"), or somewhere in-between ("Remember when Bokuto and Kenma first met?"). Headcanons and AUs are welcome!
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Rei & Nagisa). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Rei/Nagisa). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Post fills by leaving a responding comment to a prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

The idea had sprung at their (now bi-annually, because Satoru-san had complained that driving all this way just for a little bit of time with his favorite sister (Nanase-san) was a waste) family gathering.

When the parental figures would busy themselves with whatever they had to do at these kind of events, the five boys managed to escape from the clutches of their aunts, uncles, siblings and cousins, hastily retreating to Tobio's room.
It was a tight fit, and considering none of them were very chatty in the first place, the room was relatively silent save for the whirr of the electric fan.

Looking back, they’d probably blame the idea on Haruka, but only because he was the only one without any fight to argue back. Still, while most of the conversation was foggy at best, they do recall complaining about their respective team mates (most of them, anyway) and laughing at Shunsuke’s recollection of being mistaken for Yasutomo more than once and then ‘Hey, wouldn’t it be hilarious if we all swapped places for a while? Just one weekend over the summer break?

(Except Takeru, they decided quietly. Because he’d probably feel everyone up regardless of trying to act like someone else.)

Of course, they’d have to play it carefully because even if this was just for fun, some of them (Tobio, Satoru) would likely get their asses kicked two ways from Sunday if their Senpai found out.

So, on the first weekend of Summer, and with forewarning to their parents, they traded places.

Just don’t smile, and you’ll be fine Satoru had said. In fact, don’t talk at all. Pretend you have a cold or something

Of course Arakita volunteered to swap with Satoru. Despite the feeling of incredulous, worried and blank stares, he wanted to do this. After all, his school had no baseball team. Sure, he hadn’t thrown properly in years, but he was decent enough to not draw suspicion or get caught right away. And besides, what damage would just one day of pitching do? (The accident was years ago, he added in a deathly whisper, as if daring them to say anything.)

(No one denied his request.)

But as Arakita stepped onto the training field, blatantly ignoring some brown haired punk that started yelling at him for no reason, he wondered if he should have done more than stick a mask over his face. Because even if the coach was thankfully absent that day, leaving a teacher advisor that couldn’t remember half their players’ names, he could feel the club captain’s eyes on him. (He registered as someone familiar, but he couldn’t remember where he’d seen him before.) Fear was short lived, however, as the smirking bastard just made him run laps before telling him to warm up his shoulder. Satoru had filled him in a little, and he assumed this guy was Mizuki or whatever (You’ll probably just pitch and run around all day Satoru had said.

If you can pitch to Nori, the round faced guy, you’ll probably be okay)
So sure, the glasses guy probably thought something was up, but he sure as hell didn’t say anything. It was better to be on guard though, so he kept carefully silent behind his sick mask, still ignored the brown haired kid as they made their way to the bullpen and wound up to a practise throw.

Despite everything he promised to leave behind, his body remembered. His arm ached in the familiarity of his wind up, his left leg was solid, unmoving and arm whipped down hard, fingers clenching and putting the barest of spins on the ball.

It was just a fastball. A regular, old four seam fastball. But in the second it smacked into the captain’s waiting glove with a solid sound, it was the greatest pitch he’d ever thrown. He didn’t feel the pang of regret and nostalgia that he expected, and instead smirked down the line at the captain who was suddenly staring at him with narrowed, calculating eyes. He was glad the mask hid his smirk of triumph as he picked up another ball. (Though, judging by the look on the brown haired kid’s face, and the way he suddenly exploded, maybe he’d have to slow down his pitch just a little bit.)

And he does, and he makes it through the day grinning behind his mask and elbow only aching a little by the time he’s done. However, he’s unpleasantly reminded that first and second years have pack up duty. He’s lumped in with the yelling guy and some pink haired kid (why pink of all colours? It didn’t even look tough or anything) who seem more than happy to glare at him suspiciously (the former) and hover around him uncertainly (the latter.)

And because he’s good with these things, he notices glasses guy spying on them from behind the storage shed. It’s kinda creepy, and he makes a mental note to ask Satoru about this guy. He looked like a real asshole.

Haruka didn’t particularly want to be here. Chiba was nice and all, it had beaches and everything, but he was stuck cycling, of all things. Didn’t Yasutomo realise he was useless on land? Didn’t he realise he needed water?
But guess that didn’t matter, especially as he dragged his cousin’s (expensive) bike up a stupidly steep hill to a tiny clubroom at the top. He was greeted (enthusiastically) but some kid with glasses, and he couldn’t really make sense of what he was talking about, but smiled politely anyway.

Which may have been the wrong thing to do, because the kid stopped talking all together and suddenly blushed and stammered and his mind backpedalled (hah) as he tried to remember the rundown Shunsuke gave him. But of course he wasn’t really paying attention (Shunsuke’s voice was really boring) and he couldn’t remember anything except that he had to fight the redhead.
The kid was still stuttering, looking about to fall over, so he reached out a hand to steady the other. Which, apparently, made things worse. A yell from the door makes them both turn, the glasses kid cut himself off, and ah, that must be the redhead.

Who just slapped his hand from the glasses kid’s shoulder.

He had the mind to look offended, and the redhead looked about ready to start yelling when a person he presumed to either be the captain or the advisor walked in. (Only the latter because he looked kinda old. It could just be the tan though.)

The day’s training menu was daunting. They’d be cycling about 50km out along the bay, and honestly, he’d much rather be swimming that far than cycling. He didn’t even know how to use this kind of bike.

(Who’s idea was this again anyway?)

So, he decided to do what he always did when trying to get out of PE. He raised his hand and pretended that he was suddenly feeling too sick to ride.
Shunsuke must not take a lot of sick days, because everyone falls silent, and continues to be silent as he gets fed up waiting for a response and leaves.

He’d probably get scolded later, he reflected as he drags the bike back down the hill. Once it’s safe back at Shunsuke’s house, he takes the train out to the closest beach and spends the day there instead.

Furuya gets caught immediately. Even before he steps into the gym. He’s accosted by some loud, orange haired kid (Hinata, Probably) and a blonde girl who immediately try to tackle him to the ground while yelling about aliens and doppelgangers. He has no choice but to run, because even if he has no idea what’s going on, dealing with the likes of Kuramochi-san and Sawamura for over a year has given him a pretty good sixth sense for danger.

He legs it out of the school, the two hot at his heels.

Thankfully, he had the foresight to actually explore the school beforehand, and despite the other two (presumably) attending the school all year, he made use of blind spots and free flowing hallways and fences, where he could get them. It occurred to him that he wasn’t trying to get away, rather, he was unconsciously trying to tire them out. He’d been running laps of the school without thinking.

Not to mention he couldn’t really hear them behind him anymore.

He turns, and yes, they were nowhere in sight. After weighing up the options of running into those two again, and whether anyone else would believe he wasn’t Tobio, going home was probably the wisest thing to do.

But he was still curious about Tobio’s team dynamics and whether or not he was actually doing alright, because even if he didn’t show it, they were still cousins and he’d heard about all the stuff that went down with all of them (his mother was a terrible gossip.)

He didn’t make it back to the gym, so lost in his thoughts he fell victim to an ambush that knocked him down, and between the yelling of the two suddenly on top of him, and the thumping of footsteps drawing close from down the hallway, he’s no longer curious to why Tobio looks so angry all the time.
(He gets dragged back to the gym, and after the rest of the team realises that yes, he’s not Kageyama and no, he’s not a doppelganger; he’s released, and given candy by the light haired senpai by ways of an apology.)

Imaizumi also gets caught immediately, and he didn’t even make it to actual practise. He’d run into some tall, brown haired guy who didn’t even second guess when he asked if he was related to Haruka. And, because it was far easier to explain himself than deny everything, he did just that. The other guy laughed, took him home for dinner and asked him all about his cousin (Despite the fact that, judging from the familiarity of the other, he probably already knew a lot about Haruka’s childhood anyway). Imaizumi didn’t relent as much as he gave in, Makoto-san eventually moving his interest to him instead. After all, he had said, Haru never really talked about his extended family.

(But even they never really talked when they got together. And considering their relative radio silence a while back, he never thought it his business to pry into the affairs of anyone else. So it wasn’t surprising that they didn’t talk, Haruka being too far away to contact regularly.)
He ended up staying the night, and wondered how on earth someone as quiet as Haruka managed to get something so warm.

Not that he was bitter. He was relieved, honestly. They were natural loners anyway, but they worried about Haruka’s inability to be alone. But if this is how it worked out, then it was fine. Makoto was a good guy, after all.

Kageyama had no problem at all, really. Sure, cycling and volleyball were two inherently different sports, but they both required speed and stamina above all else. None of the other (many) team members seemed to question his appearance, even as he walked through the surprisingly crowded clubroom.

It’d be fine, Yasutomo had said. Just glare at anyone who gets too close and you’ll be fine.

While he wasn’t exactly sure if his glares were effective, a lot of the members gave him a wide berth regardless. So he figured, unlike the time he tried to spy on Shiratorizawa, he was actually doing pretty well.

Up until some spiky blonde (the captain?) cornered him and asked him if he felt sick.

Who could blame him for freezing, because even if he was able to deflect most of the ‘underclassmen’, respect was something he took quite seriously, and when he stuttered out his best ‘I’m fine’, the blonde’s face changed minutely (he wasn’t sure, but something /had/ changed) and he was dismissed.

…Just like that.

(Weird.)

They reconvene at Shunsuke’s house the following Tuesday. Then wait until Wednesday so Satoru can get his ass back down from Miyagi.

Yasutomo’s a little annoyed he was the only one that actually participated and confronts Satoru about the ‘Creepy smirking dude’. After being reassured it was nothing, and yes, that’s just how he is, he backs down (but still gives Satoru his line ID just in case anything bad went down.)

Haruka meanwhile wonders if he should tell Shunsuke about the doll he got from the kid with the glasses. The redhead had seethed in the corner while this was taking place, and any attempt to placate him was met with anger (though the redness of the others face wasn’t probably just from anger.) He also wonders if it’s just in red haired people’s nature to be a little contradictory.

Satoru has nothing of interest to report, but pats Tobio on the shoulder in pity. This is lost on Tobio however, and he wonders if it went okay.

However, their reminiscing is cut short by a knocking on Shunsuke’s door. They’re not expecting anyone, he’s not expecting anyone, so it only makes sense that it’s probably his mother or something.
But it isn’t.

And both Onoda and Naruko faint dead away at the sight of five copies staring at them from the doorway.

(When they come to, they spend a good twenty minutes trying to figure out which is the real Imaizumi. Arakita is obvious, the rest, less so.)
