Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Bonus Round 4: Quotes

A shipping olympics favorite, this round uses quotes of all sorts to fuel your creative endeavors.

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on July 21 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." - M. Gandhi
    • The quote can come from anywhere. Famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, your neighbor, etc.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Makoto & Rin). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Makoto/Rin). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each

character death
word count: 590

He hears Teshima's words when he's lying in his bed alone, his dreams mixing in with his memories. In a moment, he's thrown back into the one worst part of his life and it's unfair, Aoyagi thinks, that something so devastating can happen in the span of a minute.

He remembers being in the cockpit of the Antler Star while the Jaeger fell apart around him, just moments before the rest of his life followed suit.

He remembers Teshima's half of the Jaeger falling apart from his, the way Teshima was plummeting into the sea.

Aoyagi's side was the one with the charged weapon. The one with any chance of destroying the Kaiju currently tearing their Jaeger apart. Teshima put all of his strength into pushing the Kaiju into the path of the cannon, and even while putting all of his focus into firing it and making sure it hit its mark, Aoyagi was still able to feel the exact moment that their connection in the drift was severed; the exact moment that Teshima's brain ceased transmitting anything at all.

He wakes up in a cold sweat, sitting up in a smaller bed than the one that he's used to, in a smaller room than the one he's used to.

He shuts his eyes, rubbing his hand over his face, and checks the time. His alarm is due to go off in a couple of minutes anyway, so he turns it off and drags himself out of bed.

They managed to recover Teshima's body, crushed under broken parts of their Jaeger, and Aoyagi has never stepped foot inside a Jaeger again. The Antler Star sustained too much damage to even be considered worth putting through repairs, and Aoyagi took that as a sign to step down as a ranger.

He doesn't think he could ever leave the Shatterdome itself, though, when it's so deeply tied to everything that he's ever held important. He works with the crews repairing other Jaegers now, because he knows that while the drift keeps people alive in the form of memories, he knows that it resonates within the Jaegers themselves, too.

He can feel it sometimes, while he's paining over battle damage to someone else's Jaeger. The echoes of the rangers who fought in it, the Kaiju that have been battled, and Aoyagi knows better than to insist that these giant creatures of metal are actually alive, but he also knows better than to believe that they're lifeless.

Sometimes, when he's repairing the weapons on Jaegers that have returned from missions, he can hear Teshima's voice in his head, remembering times when they had to learn all of this together, kissing between revision until they ended up revising between kisses, their legs tangled on one of their beds, their fingers entwined.

Don't forget the coolant when you're replenishing a weapon, Teshima would tease. You don't want to end up overheating, now.

Aoyagi wipes his forehead, and pretends he's not wiping his eyes as well.

Teshima is easy to find, in the Drift, in himself, in the second set of dog tags that hang around Aoyagi's neck. He's everywhere, no matter how hard Aoyagi tries not to see him, not to hear him, not to miss him.

Splaying his hand out against the metal panelling of the Jaeger he's working on, Aoyagi sighs.

He thinks he knows what it feels like, to be a Jaeger; battle damaged, just barely avoiding becoming obsolete, echoing with too many memories. He doesn't know how to stop any of it.

Same feel. Missing people and feeling super connected to them still is a difficult thing.

This is very good and I wish I read it sooner.
