Kei stepped into the small cafe just as the rain started to fall in earnest. He was late, damnably so, and at this point he'd rather get there very late and dry than barely late and soaked to the bone. The cafe was small, it's windows taking up the entirety of the front, and a bell chimed when he opened the door.
"Welcome!" A voice called from behind the counter, and he ducked his head in acknowledgement. He was suddenly struck by how very pink everything was. From floor to ceiling, the walls were pink striped, the tables, chairs, even the uniform that the guy behind the counter was wearing: all pink.
"Would you like to try our specials?" His voice was chipper, happy and bubbly in a way that Kei never was. It wasn't unpleasant, but he hadn't exactly come in for the food, just to escape the downpour.
"Um, do you have coffee?" He asked, finally looking up into the face of the man behind the counter. He was met with a wide smile.
"Of course!" The man moved, pushing his blonde hair out of his face, and busied himself with filling a paper cup. "Would you like anything special with it? Just coffee?"
"Just coffee, thank you." Kei replied. He approached the counter, close enough to see the scattered cups and small coffee spills and stains on the surfaces around the man. His nametag said Hazuki. He wondered if he should be allowed to work alone, if he made that much of a mess regularly. Hazuki handed him the cup and Kei dropped some cash on the counter.
A few seconds of silence passed before Hazuki spoke up.
"So what brings you in today?"
Kei's mouth was full of hot coffee, and he swallowed, taking his time before he answered. The answer should have been obvious to anyone with ears or eyes. The rain was loud enough to hear inside.
"The rain. I was on my way to a meeting."
"Ooh, are you some important business man or something??" He sounded excited, and just as happy as he had during his first greeting.
Kei shook his head. "I'm an intern, hardly important."
"You'll be important soon, I bet, you've got that look." Hazuki bent over, resting his chin on both hands on the counter and smiled again.
"What look?" Kei wondered. Maybe the man assumed glasses meant intelligence, or that owning a briefcase meant you were successful. He certainly didn't think three minutes of acquaintance was enough for him to divine his character.
"Like you work hard, and you know what you want. The type of guys who know what they want and know how to work hard tend to get it." If possible, his smile got wider, and maybe a little mischievous.
"I don't know how you could tell that. We've hardly spoken." Kei replied. He didn't deny the assertions, in fact they were rather accurate, but that didn't change the bare facts.
"You're right! We should change that."
Kei almost choked on his coffee. "What?"
"I'm saying we should get to know each other."
"Are you asking me out?"
Hazuki laughed, and stood up fully, resting his hands on his hips as if he was about to scold a young child. "Of course I am!"
Kei felt a blush on his cheeks that he couldn't control, and he tossed his almost empty cup in a trash can.
"Look, um, I have to go to this meeting." The rain hadn't fully stopped, but it wasn't as bad as it had been minutes before.
"That's not a no, you know?" Hazuki countered, and Kei nodded.
"I know that's not a no." He turned to leave, and the bell chimed again when he opened the door.
"I'll be waiting for you!" Hazuki called. "I"m off at 6! You better come back!"
Kei tucked his jacket tighter around his waist, grateful for the warmth in his chest from the coffee and maybe something else. He thought about his schedule. Maybe it was fate, or something akin to coincidence, but he was certain he'd be passing by this cafe right around 6:05.
