Bonus Round 5: Remixes

Bonus Round 5: Remixes

SASO 2016 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Congrats, this is the home stretch! You've worked hard and created hundreds of fanworks for sports anime fandom to enjoy. This round encourages you to look back at everything the SASO has made and use it as inspiration.

This round ends at 7PM on August 8 EDT. Countdown Timer.

RULES
  • Choose a fanwork created by other participants in a previous main or bonus round of SASO and create a new piece based on it. You could create a fanart of another work, an FST inspired by a piece’s style, retell another person’s fanfic from another point of view, create a new fanfic inspired by a great piece of art... go wild!
  • You cannot remix your teammates' works.
  • You must have permission from the original creator. There's a blanket permissions post here (feel free to add yourself to it!), or you can leave a comment on their original post asking for permission.
  • You must include a link to the original work in your post.
  • Since all fills are based on previous works, there will be no prompts for this round. Simply post your fill as a comment in response to this post.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

Original fill by Megan, who is going to drive 7 hours and beat me up

No major content warnings, metaphorical drowning mention??

609 words

There was a time, back in high school, when Akaashi had been the only person who could pull Bokuto out of the mood spirals that would have otherwise left him nearly unable to function. He’d taught the rest of Fukurodani, to an extent, to understand the signs, to encourage Bokuto, even when it sounded over the top, so they never had to see him at his worst.

Bokuto always had a lot of friends, of course, and it wasn’t really a surprise when Kuroo and him went to the same university and left Akaashi to his final year at Fukurodani. The team was still strong, if slightly weaker, and he held them together like he always had, with a quiet grace that belied his true feelings.

Hiding his true feelings had become second nature to him in the way of holding one’s breath to avoid drowning. He could do it, and he would, until his lungs burned for air and the choice was kick to the surface or die.

In the beginning, the first few months after Bokuto left for University, he called Akaashi almost daily. Half the time he ignored the calls, he was used to it, Bokuto was over-excited and it was exhausting to devote himself wholly to every conversation. He answered whenever Bokuto needed him: when he called late at night, or early in the morning, when he sent a text message first, (he never texted unless he was too afraid his voice would waver if he spoke) when he called, then hung up, and then called again.

After the first few months, when the leaves were turning and dying and smells and sounds of autumn had enveloped Tokyo, Bokuto’s calls became fewer and farther between. Kuroo would call him occasionally, as if he was giving updates for the pair- how college was, how their classes were getting easier, how volleyball felt new, being at the bottom of the pecking order all over again.

There came a time when neither of them called him. He was busy, it was time for the Interhighs and he had a team to captain, but he noticed. There was something missing, and there was a pain like a knife on his skin when he realized that something was Bokuto.

He went to the University campus, it wasn’t too far, just a half hour through Tokyo traffic on a Saturday morning, just to see. He told himself it didn’t matter, it didn’t matter if he never even saw Bokuto, it wasn’t likely if he didn’t call him, and he wouldn’t. There had been a time in Bokuto’s life when he needed Akaashi, and clearly that time had passed, Akaashi just didn’t know that the feeling had been mutual, that he needed Bokuto just as much, if not more, and no one, not even the rest of Fukurodani knew the signs of his decline.

Maybe it was fate, or some twisted version of it, that led him to walk through the courtyard where Bokuto was sitting on the grass, his legs crossed and stretched out in front of him, and his back pressed against Kuroo’s chest. It wasn’t inappropriate, not something so intimate that it would be uncomfortable that they were in public, but the way Bokuto toyed with the fingers of Kuroo’s right hand, the way that he turned his head just enough to see the edge of Kuroo’s jaw, the way his eyes lit up as they both laughed at a joke Akaashi couldn’t hear, that was more than enough.

Bokuto had found another anchor, someone to keep him functioning, and make him happy, and Akaashi was left to drift.
