Bonus Round 2: Images

Bonus Round 2: Images

Back by popular demand, this round uses official canon artwork as fodder for speculation and extrapolation.
Please read the rules carefully before posting!

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on June 23 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

RULES
  • Submit prompts in the form of a canon screencap from one of our nominated fandoms along with a ship. Screencaps can be from the anime or manga, as well as any other kind of offshoot media, e.g. official art, drama CD covers, light novel illustrations, magazine covers, photos from stage plays, and/or caps from games.
    • Doujinshi, fan-made games or any other fan-created work should not be prompted, even if you receive permission. Only prompt official, canon artwork.
    • Keep your prompt concise. Don't prompt a whole manga chapter, for example.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Abe & Tajima). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Abe/Tajima). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
    • Upload the cap somewhere (imgur works well) and post here with the images themselves or a link to them. Including a text-only summary of the image is encouraged.
  • Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work inspired by the cap.
    • Fills can be directly connected to the cap, e.g. panel redraws or writing fic that fleshes out the moment that was capped or that fleshes out what happened directly before/after, but fills can also be more indirectly linked. As long as the work is somehow inspired by the cap, it counts.
    • Fills that are too long to fit in a single comment should have the rest of the fill placed as replies to the original fill comment. The subjects of these extra comments should be something like "part 2 of X" or "continued."
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

(My god this turned out longer than I thought. Thank you for the prompt, which became my opportunity to write Aratou for the first time. I guess I spilled every feeling I had here.)

--

“Wait, five thousand—do you seriously have over five thousand photos on your phone?”

Arakita snatches the phones out of Toudou’s hand and starts tapping away at buttons. Toudou makes a grab to get it back, but Arakira nudges him away with his elbow all too easily.

“All these damn selfies,” he says, turning the phone to show Shinkai, who is looking over his shoulder with interest. “Boring-ass food, boring-ass calligraphy—“

“Those are very impressive, actually,” Toudou practically shouts. He isn’t really trying to get the phone back anymore, because it’s no use, and because Shinkai and Izumida are now watching too, which means half the team is currently focused on pictures of, and/or taken by, Toudou. Which is not altogether disagreeable.

“How did you get full-body shots of yourself on a cellphone, Jinpachi?” Shinkai wants to know.

“A timer, or I get someone else to take it for me.” Toudou is not against sharing tips and tricks.

“I took that one,” Izumida confirms, pointing at one of the thumbnails on the screen.

A lot of people make excuses or outright refuse to take pictures for Toudou by now. Izumida is still a sure bet, as long as you catch him during a cooldown.

“How is there room for all this on this little phone?” Shinkai still has questions.

“I always pay for more storage so there’s room.” The cards they sell pre-packaged with phones these days are a joke.

“Easier than trying not to be crazy,” Arakita says. Toudou is about to protest, but Arakita snorts loudly at something way back in Toudou’s photo collection. “Pfhah—those stupid shorts!” I forgot about those.”

Toudou makes another grab for the phone, and Arakita holds him back with a foot planted against Toudou’s stomach.

“The purple ones,” he clarifies, since he’s not even letting Toudou look.

“Shut up, there was nothing wrong with those!”

“You looked like a clown.”

“Arakita!” Toudou lunges and gets a shoe to the stomach again. “I looked beautiful as always, and you know it! Back then, you were the one who—“

“Shut it,” Arakita says, kicking Toudou with more force this time. Toudou jumps back and glares at him.

“There are a lot of photos of you on here, Yasutomo,” Shinkai comments. He’s reaching around Arakita now to keep scrolling back.

“That’s what I’m trying to say,” Toudou answers, “back then Arakita was—“

Arakita’s breath catches, and suddenly he’s jumping to his feet with a growl. He snaps the phone shut and jams it into Toudou’s pocket.

“Arakita.”

He’s already on his way out, so Toudou jumps in front of him and spreads his arms wide.

“Get lost.”

Toudou shakes his head, petulant. “It’s been ages already! Does it really matter if people know that we—“

Arakita shoves hard, knocks Toudou flat on his ass, and steps over him on his way out the door.

“Hyuu,” Shinkai breathes.

Izumida places a hand over his chest, looking shaken.

Toudou climbs to his feet. He pivots on his heel and just stares out the open doorway.

“If we know that they… what?” Izumida is speaking to Shinkai, but he’s not too quiet for Toudou to overhear.

“That we dated,” Toudou says, his voice injured. And he runs out the door.

--

“How come you’re always hanging back in the clubroom?” Toudou, a year and a half younger, wants to know. “After you’re already dressed?”

“You’re a pain in the ass.”

“That doesn’t make sense. Why would you stay here because I’m a pain in the ass?

Arakita wishes he’s had a tape recorder going, so he could trim the recording to just say I’m a pain in the ass in Toudou’s voice and play it back over and over.

“I wasn’t answering,” Arakita says. “That was an unrelated comment.”

“Well, why then?!”

Arakita still doesn’t answer.

“I bet you just want to watch me change,” Toudou says, face morphing from a frown to a self-satisfied grin. “Waiting around for a glimpse of my beautiful physique, are you?”

“Even if you had the most beautiful body on earth, it wouldn’t be worth putting up with your stalling and fussing and—and yammering on your phone while you change.”

“I do have the most beautiful body on earth,” Toudou says.

“And I just said it’s still not fuckin’ worth it.”

Toudou’s eyebrows do an odd thing. He opens his mouth and then closes it. He sucks in a breath through his nose. “You’re not disagreeing?”

Arakita stares at him for a long moment.

“Idiot. Of course I don’t agree with that bullshit.”

But Arakita is there again after practice on Monday. Toudou keeps trying to catch his eye to see if he can see something there, decipher some part of the previous interaction that Toudou’s been turning over and over in his head all weekend.

But Arakita’s face, as ever, has a resting position of mild irritation.

When Toudou is ready to leave, he taps Arakita on the shoulder.

“The hell do you want?”

“I’m gonna get something to eat. Are you coming?”

Arakita’s eyebrows slant down harshly, but after a moment he sighs and pushes himself to his feet.

“Yeah, fine.”

It becomes kind of a thing. Arakita gets dressed, sits and waits while Toudou takes his time primping and catching up on calls and texts, and then they go somewhere together. It’s usually food, but if neither is particularly hungry, they still head out together and end up window shopping or checking out a new arcade Arakita heard about or just sort of wandering around and commenting on strangers’ fashion choices.

On one such occasion Toudou asks, “Arakita, are we going out?”

“Obviously,” he says, kicking a pebble on the sidewalk. “Almost every damn day, it seems like.” The way he says it makes it sound like he’s being forced into it against his will, rather than coming along of his own accord every single time.

“I don’t think you understand,” Toudou says. He takes Arakita’s hand and ducks into an alleyway.

“Arakita,” he says, very slowly, each syllable receiving due care. “Are. You and I. Dating.”

Arakita clicks his tongue against his teeth and averts his gaze, but he doesn’t pull his hand away.

“You tell a single person something like that and you’re dead.

“But—“

“Not a single person, got that?!”

“Fine!” Toudou says. “But even if I don’t tell anyone, I mean… are we?”

Arakita bristles, eyes cutting to Toudou and then away again. Finally he lets out a breath and drops his shoulders.

“Guess we are.”

He squeezes Toudou’s hand once before dropping it and stepping back out on the sidewalk. Toudou’s mind buzzes with thousands of half-formed thoughts, but he doesn’t have the words to voice a single one of them. It’s a blessing in disguise, maybe, because the silence comforts Arakita. If Toudou had sais anything more, it might have been grounds to break up with him on the spot.

~

“What do you like about me?” Toudou asks the next day. They’ve carried snacks to the park, and are sprawled out on the grass, using Arakita’s jacket as a makeshift picnic blanket.

“Not a damn thing.” Arakita takes a long drink of his Bepsi.

“You don’t date people you don’t like,” Toudou prods.

Arakita gives him a warning look. “We’re in public.”

“No one is even here!” Toudou gestures to all the empty space around them. There are some kids kicking around a ball several meters away, but not within hearing range.

Arakita scrubs a hand over his face.

“I don’t know, okay? I don’t mind doing this stuff with you. You’re okay to talk to when you listen instead of running your mouth, and you’re… cute, I guess. In an annoying way,” he adds hastily, rubbing at his face again like maybe he can wipe away the redness on his cheeks.

“Annoying because you wish you could be as beautiful as me?”

Arakita elbows Toudou so that he loses balance and has to plant both hands on the grass to break his fall.

“You wouldn’t go out with me if you thought I was ugly,” Arakita grumbles. “Too vain.”

Toudou frowns at his dirty hands and wipes them on Arakita’s jeans, but he discards the grudge before it can form. “You’re not ugly, obviously. Not on the same level as me, but—“

Arakita ruffles up Toudou’s hair, causing him to gasp and pull away. “You don’t know when to quit talking.”

“Quit that,” Toudou says, even though Arakita has already stopped touching him. Toudou pulls out a compact mirror and sets about fixing his hair back in place. “Anyway, if you hadn’t been so rude, I was going to say you’re kind of hot.”

Arakita laughs in disbelief, and rolls his eyes. “You just did, though.”

Toudou tries not to smile.

Arakita does, too.

That’s the easiest it ever is, probably.

~

“So, are you going to kiss me?”

“Like hell!”

Toudou hums in discontent. “What kind of relationship is this, if we can’t even do that?”

Arakita glances sidelong at Toudou. He doesn’t hold Toudou’s hand, but sort of… brushes their knuckles together, the way he does sometimes. “I meant not right now, okay? I guess it’ll happen at some point.”

Neither of them can stop thinking about it, so it happens the very next day. They’re about to leave the clubroom when Arakita says “Hey,” pulls Toudou back, and presses a thumb against his lips before replacing it with his mouth. For a few moments, Toudou is as silent as when he’s gaining on an easy opponent during a race. Arakita decides he likes kissing.

Sometimes, they don’t even leave the clubroom.

Toudou catches up with Arakita before he can get on his bike and take off, which means he can’t have been angry enough to be in too much of a hurry. It’s a relief—Toudou had suspected he’d be long gone by now.

I’m the one who should be angry, you know,” Toudou declares.

Arakita scoffs.

“I am! It was a long time ago, Arakita! And I let you do what you wanted back then, but after all this time, you’re still ashamed of me?”

“Huh?!” Arakita stares Toudou down, searches his eyes like he’s trying to determine if Toudou is serious. Which, of course, Toudou is. “If that’s what you think, you’re an even bigger idiot than I thought.”

Toudou puts his hands on his hips. He’s not wrong; he knows how it is. “Why did we break up, Arakita?”

Arakita grits his teeth. “You fuckin’ know why.”

“I want to hear you say it.”

“Because,” Arakita says, voice soaked through with venom, “you got fuckin’ bored. Off after the next shiny new thing, huh?! So yeah, sue me if I don’t want everyone knowing that I’m just one more thing you threw away.”

“That’s not true, Arakita!” Toudou has hardly felt so slandered in all his life. He’s loyal. The same bike, same fashion sensibilities, same diet for ages now. “You know it’s not like that!”

“I don’t!” Arakita bares his teeth. “So if it’s not, why don’t you tell me how it is.”

“It’s—you—! You stopped coming, Arakita.”

“I skipped two days for good reasons, do I need a damn note from home to prove it? You’re the one who acted like a baby and stopped inviting me.”

“Why would I keep asking someone out who didn’t want to be around me? Didn’t even want to be seen with me?”

“Doesn’t usually stop you.”

“Oh, don’t even try it. You admit that you were embarrassed, then? So there’s your answer. I wasn’t going to force it if you couldn’t even appreciate me, so I gave you an out and you took it.”

“Didn’t. Fuckin’… appreciate you?!” Arakita stomps forward into Toudou’s space, glares directly down at him, using his height to its full advantage. “You know how much money I dropped for your spoiled ass?”

“Money is not the point, Arakita.” Toudou hates the way he has to crane his neck back, but like hell is he going to back down.

“Yeah? Then what about time?” Arakita is practically spitting now. “Every single afternoon for months that I could have spent doing something else?”

“Then why didn’t you?”

“Because I appreciated you.”

“Don’t be an ass.”

“You think I’m kidding? I appreciated the fuck out of you, anybody could have seen that.”

“But no one did, did they? Because you were so set on keeping me a secret!”

Arakita’s eyes flash, and finally he takes a step back.

“Yeah, so maybe I was kind of an asshole. Shit was new to me, all right? I wasn’t ready for everyone to know I’m… like that.” The look he gives Toudou now is less warning, more searching. “You saying you would’ve been okay with that? Everyone knowing you’re all talk when it comes to girls?”

“I am not all talk.”

“Yeah? Then what are you?”

“Don’t… change the subject. The answer is yes, I wanted to tell people. The team, at least. I wanted to stop pretending around everyone.”

Arakita shoves his hands in his pockets.

“So?” Toudou prompts.

“You still wanna hear me say why we broke up?” Arakita says.

Toudou nods.

“Well, we didn’t.” He sighs, slouching in a way that makes Toudou worry about his back. “We just sorta… stopped. Never got the memo that we were through, so I had to figure it out myself.”

Toudou looks for a retort, but Arakita is right. Neither of them ever said the words.

“Isn’t that how we got together, though, too?”

“Guess so.”

Toudou wrings his hands. “I wasn’t… bored of you, Arakita.”

“Yeah? Well I wasn’t embarrassed of you, either.”

“Then why… did we stop?”

“Who fuckin’ knows.”

They take a deep breath, in unison.

“Do you want to…” Toudou clasps his hands behind his back. “I don’t know. Get something to eat?”

Arakita sighs and runs a hand through his hair.

“Doesn’t mean I’m your goddamn boyfriend,” he says. “But, yeah. Sure.”

"No, not Koto, Toudou. Toudou Jinpachi. We should have a reservation for two at 17:30….Canceled!? What do you mean it's been canceled?.....The entire restaurant? How does someone reserve the whole restaurant?.....No, 20:00 won't work; we're going to a show with a 19:30 curtain…..I understand. Thank you. Have a nice day."

Toudou snapped his phone shut and turned to Arakita. "They canceled our dinner reservation for tonight! Apparently some guy reserved the entire restaurant or something. Who even does something like that!? How am I supposed to find a good place for dinner that still has reservations open for a Saturday night?" Toudou asked, throwing his hands up dramatically.

"We could just get burgers," Arakita said, looking utterly unfazed by Toudou's outburst.

Toudou looked horrified. "Burgers? We are not having fast food for date night. Absolutely not," he said with a shudder.

"Who says it has to be fast food? There's a place I know that does damn good burgers. They even have some veggie ones if you really insisted."

"But it's our anniversary," Toudou complained, "and our fifth anniversary at that. Anniversaries are supposed to have roses and nice dinners."

Arakita rolled his eyes. "Says who? And since when have you fucking cared?" he asked. "Do you remember what you did for my birthday?"

Toudou flushed and looked away. "Okay. Point taken," he said. "Fine. Burgers it is."

As expected, Toudou mumbled complaints the entire way to the restaurant, but when they arrived, he was suitably impressed. "They have honest-to-god tablecloths," he hissed as they were seated, tugging on the linen in disbelief.

"It's an honest-to-god restaurant, what did you expect?" Arakita replied.

Despite his best arguments against it, Toudou insisted on ordering one of the veggie burgers, as Arakita had known he would. When they finished, it was only a short walk to the theatre, and Arakita swore they were the youngest couple in attendance by at least a couple of decades. Apparently opera was no the entertainment of choice for their demographic.

To be perfectly honest, it wasn't his entertainment of choice either, but Toudou had insisted. By the end of the first act, he was completely lost, even with the notes in the program. He had to give Toudou some credit for choosing a show with a wolf that seemed to feature prominently, and some well-done fight scenes, but Toudou had apparently forgotten that he didn't speak French or German or whatever-the-hell-they-were-speaking onstage, especially not when it was sung in its full operatic glory.

By the time the third act started, he was officially bored out of his mind. Even the wolf jumping around onstage couldn't hold his interest through ear-splitting arias and the overly long and disgustingly romantic love songs - even without knowing a word of the language, he had no trouble picking those out. He started entertaining himself by watching Toudou watching the stage, so enthralled by the performance that he didn't even notice when Arakita took his hand and started lacing their fingers together.

By the time the show finally ended, he was starting to be bored even of Toudou-watching. "So, you liked it?" he asked as they filed out of the theatre.

Toudou nodded enthusiastically. "It was great! This is the first weekend they've been running the new casting for the peasant leads. The tenor especially is something of a phenomenon right now, and now that I've heard him in person, I can say it's with good reason. Did you hear the way he was hitting those notes? It gave me goosebumps. He's really popular with the younger opera fans as well."

Arakita just nodded; he couldn't have picked out the actor in question if he had tried, and he had never had much of an ear for notes anyway.

"So what was your favorite part?"

"Huh?" Arakita raised an eyebrow at him and tried to remember something that had happened that wasn't Toudou's reactions to the performance. "Uh, it hasn't happened yet," he said.

"What do you—"

Without warning, Arakita dropped to his knee, holding out a small box. In front of the crowd of shocked opera patrons leaving around them, he asked, "Toudou Jinpachi, will you marry me?" It couldn't be a legal marriage, not yet anyway, but that didn't mean they couldn't celebrate it. He wasn't one for dramatic statements himself, but this was Toudou, and for Toudou he'd even brave the goddamn jewelry store to pick out the goddamn fancy ring for the occasion.

In a rare turn of events, Toudou seemed to be speechless, staring down at Arakita in disbelief. "Marry you?" he asked finally.

Arakita nodded.

"Hell yes."

I'm glad you liked it! Arakita tries, he really does, but smooth/tactful just isn't really in his nature.
