Their relationship ends with as much inevitability and as little fanfare as it began. It’s not something anyone in their shared circles speak of; or at least, not something Oikawa’s overheard. Truthfully, it’s not something he and Tobio mention either, if they talk at all — Oikawa’s a retired player, now, still in the spotlight of the media but no longer at the forefront of the court. He wonders where he stands with Tobio now. He doesn’t think about where Tobio stands with him.

And perhaps it’s better that way. Perhaps it’s why they ended the way they did in the first place. Oikawa doesn’t talk about them, about him.

But he crosses his mind; sometimes fleeting, other times lingering.

So Oikawa doesn’t talk to him. It doesn’t mean he’s stopped thinking about him.





There’s nobody there when the knock arrives at Oikawa’s door. There is, however, a plastic bag left at his doorstep, a slip of something dark and soft spilling out as though overturned when its owner left, unsettled in the rush of their departure. Oikawa reaches to pick it up, eyes searching out a source he doesn’t expect to find, but still distantly hopes to see anyway. He doesn’t find anyone, and yet his hands speak something else entirely.

Reaching blindly for the bag at his feet, Oikawa ended up holding on to the something he’d seen start to fall out earlier, fabric giving way to a shirt, several sizes too small and many years too old to be new — Oikawa freezes.

He doesn’t need to look down to know what he’s holding but he does anyway, drawn by compulsion or weakness he hasn’t yet managed to kick. His face tightens even as his grip slacks on the Kitagawa Daiichi jersey in his hands, then in the air, pooling out at his feet, the number 2 a reminder, a twist in the gut.

Because it’s his number and his old school but Oikawa knows even before he slides the jersey back into the bag, carrying it back with him inside, that it’s not his jersey. It’s too tight around the shoulders, too long a hem. And he recognises it.

Oikawa doesn’t even wish that he didn’t.

Whether or not he’d wish for this particular jersey here, with him, is another story.





He doesn’t throw it out, but he doesn’t take it out from the bag again. It sits there, an unworn skeleton he keeps at the corner of his desk, refusing to bury it like a childhood monster at the back of his closet. Maybe that’s why he finds the note, days and days later, scrawled onto the side of a packet of tissues also in the bag.

I admired you once, it reads. The writing is terrible as ever, only legible to Oikawa’s eyes because he’s used to looking for the curves of the characters, kanji still clumsy after all this time. I admired you once, past tense, set carefully aside, locked away from where Oikawa can return to it. Not that he would. Oikawa’s never believed in clinging onto the past so he doesn’t, doesn’t talk about it as he strides forward, forward, not a backwards glance even as he reaches new bends in the road, dead ends he marches right through.

And the thing is, Oikawa can’t even say he’s surprised, really. No stranger to being left behind, it only made sense that some day Tobio’d be the one who does the leaving. And that, too, makes sense, because Oikawa himself is no stranger to being passed by. Both of them chasing forward, both of them leaving behind. Both of them familiar with the shape of someone’s back as it rushes by them and past them.

Oikawa blinks. He scrunches his nose, remembering what he meant to do with the tissues in the first place. Opening the packet, he pulls one out to blow his nose, leaving the rest of the packet on his desk when he goes to throw the used tissue away. He returns to his desk, pushing the packet of tissues — note now ripped in half where he’d opened it — back into the bag. Resting where it is, it covers the 2 of the jersey, dark sleeves and a white back sitting unused in a bag.

Picking the bag up, Oikawa walks to his door. He slides on his shoes and remembers to lock to the door behind him. He stops to wish a neighbour good afternoon before he reaches his car, programs his GPS, and doesn’t speak again for the rest of the day.

The sky is still a light blue when Koushi gathers with bucket and ladder. The birds are calling from their trees, their wings black against the sky as the sun sinks into the horizon. Koushi hurries his pace a little, struggling with the large ladder. He's running late.

His favourite place to set up is in the middle of a park that stretches in every direction, with trees that line the perimeter of it. He walks to the very middle and stretches his ladder out, up and up and up until it touches the sky, hooking into place somewhere in the atmosphere.

With a deep breath, Koushi does his stretches first and then, with his bucket in one hand and his long paintbrush strapped to his back, he begins his climb.

He climbs away from the ground, until he's higher than the trees, and higher than the birds still flying across the sky to their homes. He climbs until he can see the top of the very tallest buildings in the city, until the temperature in the air begins to drop. It doesn't bother him, though. It never has.

He climbs until the very earth feels like it falls away from him, as if he's almost floating in the air, if not for the reassuring touch of the ladder beneath his fingers. Until he feels that if he kept climbing, the only place he could go to would be the moon.

It's a tempting thought, for all of a single, passing moment. Tooru would be there, Koushi thinks to himself. It's been a while since they've seen each other.

But Koushi has a job to do, and that comes first. He steadies himself against the ladder, even though he knows that he won't fall. He turns to the sky and, hanging his bucket on the hook that exists for this very purpose, he takes his long paintbrush from its place on his back.

His brush is longer than he is, with a wide head. The bucket is just big enough for Koushi to dip the brush into, before he raises it to the sky and paints.

In the wake of every brushstroke, he leaves countless sparkling stars. He lets them fill the sky, as the sun says its final goodbyes to the day and sinks out of sight, until Koushi is the only one who can still see it, from his vantage point up high above the rest of the world.

He's nearly painted the entire sky when he realises that he has company, in the form of one moon guardian, standing on his own ladder, extending from the moon instead of the earth.

"It's been a while since you've been over to visit," Tooru pouts, and Koushi only smiles, brushing a kiss along Tooru's cheek as he turns to his bucket to continue painting.

"I've been busy," Koushi says at length, when Tooru continues to pout at him. "There are many stars, and only one moon."

"I could help you," Tooru murmurs, resting his elbows on the next rung of his ladder, his chin in his hands. "We could paint the sky together. Weave stars across the darkness the way the world was first woven into existence."

"That sounds nice," Koushi sighs, but he knows that it's only something they can have in theory. He can make Tooru's purpose seem simple enough, but he knows better. He knows just how much there is for Tooru to do under the surface; he knows that being the guardian of an entire moon is different to being the painter of stars.

He doesn't envy Tooru one single bit.

"You should at least visit sometimes," Tooru complains. "It's unfair, hanging the moon in the sky for everyone to see, and not getting to see you in return."

"Next time," Koushi promises, because he thinks of Tooru too, in every glinting diamond he places into the sky. "I'll come and visit."

"Not just a short visit," Tooru tells him sternly, leaning dangerously far away from his ladder so he can touch his lips to Koushi's, light as the wind. "A proper one.'

"Yes, oh Moon Guardian," Koushi smiles. "I promise."

It's not as though Nijimura actively seeks Akashi out to walk with him, but that seems to be the way he ends most of his days after practice lately, the two of them side by side with nothing but the sound of their footsteps to break the silence. It's comforting, and Nijimura is beginning to realise that perhaps even that isn't as one-sided as he initially thought. There's a certain comfort that Akashi takes in his company too; Nijimura can see it in the slightly relaxed line of his shoulders, the way he's just content to walk without overthinking what's happening around him.

They understand each other, in their own way, and Nijimura likes that. Akashi is caught between enjoying the time he has with his friends and teammates, and concerning himself with things that should be beyond him, things that shouldn't even be his problem just yet. Nijimura doesn't know how to help with that, or how to change it, but if he can help just by being there, just by walking side by side down the street with Akashi, then he'll be happy with that.

Of course, Nijimura should know better than to expect it to last forever. At his current point in life, he should know better than to expect anything to last indefinitely.

Still, it's with reluctance that he clears his throat during one of their afternoon walks home, glancing to his side, at Akashi, before he says, "My family is moving to America for a while."

"For your father," Akashi replies, and it's not a question. Akashi isn't the type to ask unnecessary questions, or to waste unnecessary words. "Can they help him, there?"

"We hope so," Nijimura replies. "It's worth a try."

Akashi nods, and he might never talk about it, but Nijimura knows that he understands the sentiment anyway. Even if it wasn't public knowledge due to Akashi's family being wealthy and famous, Nijimura would know from the way that Akashi is silent and sombre whenever their conversation turns to hospital visits. Every time Nijimura mentions his father, Akashi's expression twitches, just so slightly. Nijimura tries not to talk about it very much.

"When do you leave?" Akashi asks, looking up at him.

"Soon after I graduate." Nijimura clears his throat. "I don't know where we'll be staying yet."

Akashi hums softly, perhaps to himself, and they continue walking in silence.

When Nijimura leaves, it's without any real fanfare. He doesn't leave an address, doesn't tell Akashi to keep in touch with him.

Still, he isn't surprised when a parcel finds its way to his family's apartment a few weeks later, the address written in familiar handwriting.

For you and your family, the note reads, with Akashi's signature, and Nijimura smiles to himself as he looks through the parcel, at the box of sweets, the basketball magazines, the novels, wondering when Akashi found the time to put this together, wondering exactly how Akashi found him in the first place.

Not that it really matters. Just holding the parcel, knowing it's from Akashi, is comforting in its own way.
