Bonus Round 3: Gift Tags

Bonus Round 3: Gift Tags

Feeling generous? In this round, you get to give creative gifts as prompts.

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on July 7 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

RULES
  • Submit prompts as a gift tag in the format below. You can specify the size and a characteristic of the gift, who the sender is, who the recipient is, and a one or two sentence note from the sender to the recipient. Descriptions of the package and the included note don’t have to be explicit, see below.
    • Package: medium sized cube, rattles
      From: Kageyama Tobio
      To: Hinata Shouyou
Note: These will help you get better.
    • Envelope: manila, 12''x17'', very thick and heavy
      From: Tezuka Kunimitsu
      To: Kinjou Shingo
Note: Enclosed - Play without regrets!
  • Your prompt MUST include a relationship. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Riko & Momoi). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Riko/Momoi). Please don't say "Any pairing," either.
  • Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work. Fillers can get creative with how to interpret the prompt: your fill can be about the character receiving the gift, one or both characters using the gift, what prompted the sender to send the gift—the physical gift itself can even be excluded from your fill. What’s important is that the gift tag is clearly the inspiration for your fill.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

Imayoshi Shouichi & Sakurai Ryou, Kuroko no Basuke
no tags, trans headcanon

Package: fairly small and flexible, it feels like some sort of stiff cloth
To: Sakurai
From: Imayoshi
Note: I noticed someone keeps taking the ace bandages from the first-aid kit. Please use this instead.

Fill: Team Furuya Satoru/Miyuki Kazuya, G

tags: mentions/fear of transphobia (everything is fine tho don't worry)
word count: 1190

The envelope is small, plain, gives little indication of what’s inside. It makes Ryou nervous, frankly, an unmarked package slipped into his locker sometime between the beginning of practice and now not seeming to bode well, but he lets his curiosity get the better of him, slipping it into his backpack in the silence of the empty locker room, the rest of the team long gone by now. The whole way home he thinks he can almost feel the weight of it in his bag, though he knows the package is too light to be noticeable, stuffed between his school books.

Calling a greeting to his mother as he kicks off his shoes, he pads up the stairs to his room as quickly as he can without drawing her ire for running in the house. He locks his door behind him as a precaution—he can't imagine what anyone might have bothered to leave for him, but better safe than sorry, right? The way the package feels, Aomine might have taken it upon himself to try and gift Ryou one of his magazines again—Ryou has no interest in them, but he doesn't think his mother is going to take that into account if she walks in on him holding one and blushing.

When he’s sure his privacy is secured, Ryou grabs a pair of scissors off of his desk and sits down on his bed, the package in his lap. He smoothes his hands over it, feeling the heavy paper under his fingers and taking the moment to suck in a deep breath before he takes the scissors and slits open the top of the envelope.

When he shakes the package, a note falls out first, pencil on a scrap of plain notebook paper.

Sakurai,
I noticed someone keeps taking the ace bandages from the first-aid kit. Please use this instead.
Imayoshi

Startled, Ryou feels his face heat, humiliated by the revelation that someone on the team has caught on. Being allowed on the team—in the school, even—had been a battle based largely on the goodwill of Coach Harasawa. Ryou had proven his value through his skill, and Harasawa had actually taken him seriously, had taken his case to Touou’s administration and argued for him until the school relented, allowing him on the boy’s basketball team and issuing him a male uniform along with the scholarship that covered most of his tuition.

The administrative battle had been private, though. No one on the team was supposed to know anything about it—Harsawa was nothing if not discrete, and Ryou did everything in his power to avoid raising any questions or putting himself in situations where anyone might realize. Most of the team had just put him down as painfully nervous and shy and left it at that, but naturally Imayoshi, obnoxiously clever and observant, would have picked up on something. Ryou berates himself for being so obvious—of course stealing team supplies to bind would get him noticed eventually, even if he reused them until they could barely hold their shape, much less keep his chest comfortably flat. His mother had shrugged it off as his “tomboy” nature when he had brought home the boys uniform, but broaching the topic of binding had seemed like pushing his luck too far, so he’s been settling for whatever he can get.

Now, though, somebody knows. Panic bubbles in his stomach and constricts his throat at the thought, but, but—the note hadn't quite seemed threatening, had it? Or scolding, or even mocking, which is a rare thing from their notoriously sarcastic captain. Ryou reads the note again, hands trembling. Please use this instead.

Picking up the envelope, Ryou reaches inside. His fingers meet cool fabric, thick and stiff in a way that’s unfamiliar. He slides it out of the packing, shaking it out and holding it up in front of himself.

A binder. Plain, dark grey material, easy enough to pass off as a regular tank top.

Ryou’s unbuttoning the shirt of his uniform before he even knows what he’s doing, practically ripping it off in his eagerness. There are no ace bandages now, having taken them off to shower after practice and left them off once he had dressed again, both to avoid questions at home and to give his aching ribs a break. For once he’s incredibly thankful for their absence, that he doesn't have to waste his time unwinding them before yanking the binder on over his head.

He almost gets stuck in it, the heavy, stretchy fabric unfamiliar and difficult to handle, but eventually he manages to fight it down and get it settled properly, smoothing his hands over his own torso in a way he usually avoids at all costs. He actually turns to look at himself in the mirror, twisting back and forth to test his range of motion and admire himself, the way the fabric smoothes the usual faint curve of his chest and hips into straight lines, flat and masculine and right. Snatching the note up off the bed, he reads it three more times, scrubbing at his eyes with the heel of one hand. As much as he hadn't wanted anyone to know, he thinks this is probably the best possible outcome to someone figuring it out. He’ll have to think up a way to thank Imayoshi later.

.

Imayoshi grins at Ryou when he presents the bento he had made, bowing so deeply he’s practically bent in half.

“What’s this about, hmm?”

“I just—! I wanted to say thank you, Imayoshi-san! For the—the gift, I mean! I really really appreciated it, I’m so sorry for making you go to so much trouble for me!” Imayoshi laughs, plucking the bento out of Ryou’s hands and ruffling his hair. Ryou holds himself carefully still, biting his lip as he watches his bangs shake with the affectionate motion of Imayoshi’s hand.

“Don't worry about it. I know what it’s like to be in that position, and I can't have our precious shooting guard hurting himself, now can I?” Ryou’s head snaps up, eyes flying wide at the casual confession. It suddenly makes sense how Imayoshi had figured it out—not to mention why Coach Harasawa had been so willing to take him on, and why the school had allowed it. It isn't the first time this battle has been fought here.

“You—? Ah! I’m sorry, I don't mean to be rude! Forgive me! I just didn't know—!” Waving him off, Imayoshi gives Ryou his usual perplexing smile.

“Well, that's sort of the point, isn't it? Can't say it's something I advertise much, but I figured I have a certain level of responsibility to my youthful charges in the same situation.” Ryou’s mouth drops open, and Imayoshi claps him on the shoulder, strolling away with the bento dangling between his fingers. As he leaves, he calls over his shoulder, “Careful! You’ll catch flies like that.”

Ryou snaps his mouth closed so fast his teeth click. He’s incredibly grateful, but he thinks probably he's never going to understand that guy.

*flails happily in corner*

Thank you so much for filling my rare pair trans headcanon! I love how you wrote Sakurai here; his nervousness/insecurity feels completely in-character. As is Imayoshi's subtle plotting. Sakurai's last line is priceless too; I feel like a lot of people feel that way about Imayoshi (well, at least the not understanding part; I'm not sure how many people feel that grateful towards him).

Thank you again for the fill!
