Abe and Haruna are explosive when they're put together.
No longer covered in bruises, having learned how to properly catch Haruna's pitches, Abe is beginning to realise that being explosive isn't always a good thing. Not when it doesn't show on the field, where Haruna refuses to exceed his pitching limit no matter what kind of situation he leaves them in, where he shakes off Abe's signs without a second thought as if he's the only one who knows what's best for the game.
The explosive side of their relationship shows when they've finished a game, when Abe is so frustrated that he's shaking with it. The team doesn't do as well as they could have—as well as they should have, with someone like Haruna as their pitcher—and Abe can't stand it.
He hates Haruna's personality, his sense of self-entitlement, and he's never thought that being part of a battery would be this difficult. When he began, he was naïve enough to believe that all it took was his ability to catch whatever kind of ball his pitcher threw at him. That in itself has been difficult enough when it comes to Haruna, and Abe thought that at least when he learned to do that, the worst was behind him and the rest would fall into place.
He knows better now, though. He knows that nothing he can do will change the way that Haruna approaches their games. No matter how many signs he sends, Haruna will only follow the ones that he wants to, and will shake off the rest. There's absolutely nothing in the world that will change what kind of person Haruna is, and if Abe wants to play as catcher for their team, he has no choice but to deal with it.
At the very least, their other pitchers are easier to get along with. They might have their own idiosyncrasies, but none of them are quite as particular as Haruna. Catching for them makes Abe feel like he's coming up for air, like he might not burst after all, but then he crouches in front of Haruna and he can feel it building up all over again.
All he needs to do is get through this year. Haruna will graduate, and then Abe won't have to deal with him any more. He'll make sure not to go to the same high school as him, and the only time that they'll cross paths is when their teams are facing each other.
He's still only in his second year of middle school, but Abe finds himself wondering about what kind of pitchers he'll be catching for in high school. Whoever they are, he'll make sure that they work with him better than Haruna does. He won't tolerate anything different.
Whoever they are, he's sure they'll be better than this.
