Fill: Team Furuya Satoru/Miyuki Kazuya, T

vague post-apocalyptic society, death mention

The day Furuya turned up at the orphanage stands out in Kazuya’s memory. It had been another boring day, bleeding together with the day before and the day before that; the day before that one there were some soldiers passing through so that was at least something to look at from the top floor of the orphanage window, Kazuya’s glasses clinking the window as bigger kids pushed him forward.

It had been a while since they received a new face and this one stood out to him right away. For one thing, he wasn’t crying, most of the kids that got brought to the Seidou Orphanage were inconsolable for at least a day, wailing messes who wouldn’t eat and only slept when they’d finally exhausted themselves. He looked calm, his blue eyes darting around at all the unfamiliar faces as the officer talked to Kataoka and Takashima. He just stood there, his right hand holding onto a battered stuffed animal, a polar bear, Kazuya could recognize the animal from a picture book in their meager library; he wasn’t clinging to it the way most kids did when they showed up. He noted which of the younger kids were eyeing the toy jealously. He expected the new kid to cry that night; even those who put on a brave face tended to break in the dark, the floor crowded with futons and all the lights out but no sounds came from his futon.

Furuya was quiet, not meek looking by any means but it only took a few days of observation for some of the bigger kids to move in on him and try to take his stuffed animal. Kazuya heard them corner him in the library, where he tended to spend the most time. He rounded the doorway as fast as he could.

“Aren’t you a little old to be playing with toys, Azuma-senpai?” Kazuya had snickered, stepping into the room with his hands in his pockets.

He was useless in a fight; everyone knew it, but if need be he could distract them enough to forget about Furuya.

“Shut it, four-eyes,” Azuma had growled, only giving Kazuya a momentary glance before turning back to Furuya.

Kazuya opened his mouth to try again but before any words left his throat Furuya had punched Azuma hard in the jaw, sending the bigger kid stumbling backwards with a yell. The yell had Takashima running, her critical eye taking in the scene; Furuya with his back against the wall, fist still raised, the boys surrounding him with a look of shock, and Kazuya standing dumbfounded in the middle of the room and seeing the story clearly and taking the perpetrators to her office for scolding, leaving Kazuya and Furuya alone.

“That was a good punch,” Kazuya remarked, Furuya’s blue eyes travelling from the floor to Kazuya’s face. “It was really fast, and it must have been hard to do that to Azuma.”

“I didn’t want to,” Furuya said quietly, surprising Kazuya again. He flexed his fingers experimentally and Kazuya steps closer.

“Did you hurt your hand? Let me see.”

Furuya held his hand out obediently and Kazuya could see the place of impact on his knuckles. He whistled.

“How did you hold your fingers?” He asked and Furuya showed him, the thumb tucked under. “Well, you can move your thumb it’s not broken but next time you should do this,” he takes Furuya’s thumb and show’s him where to place it. “Not that I think Azuma will mess with you again after that,” he grinned, still feeling the heat of Furuya’s skin.

“Thanks…” He looked at Kazuya quizzically.

“Miyuki Kazuya,” Kazuya filled in for him.

“Thank you, Miyuki-senpai,” Furuya nodded.

“Senpai!” Kazuya crowed with amusement. “You called me, senpai! You’re taller than me, kid.”

He frowned and cocked his head, staring at Kazuya critically.

“I’ll be 10 in July,” he said and Kazuya stopped laughing.

“Ah, I guess I am your senpai. I better take care of my kohai and show him around,” Kazuya patted his shoulder.

“Furuya,” he said. “Furuya Satoru.”

Furuya fit in easier after that, still reserved but he joined in more of the other kid’s games and activities, hanging back with Kazuya to observe when Kazuya had pissed off too many of them with his quick mouth. He also took to following Kazuya around and Kazuya had to admit he was starting to get used to it, having a shadow.

That shadow followed him for years, through all the daily small childhood drama of the orphanage to finally growing big enough to help rebuild the city and one day that shadow followed him into bed.

At first it scared him, the thought that Furuya had grown so close to his heart, as much a part of his life as breathing and Kazuya knew what it was like to not be able to breath under layers of facemasks to protect from sickness, under the pressure to keep breathing when everyone he loved had stopped. Even with the fear, Kazuya could never tell Furuya to leave. He would never choose the dark and lonely nights before Takashima found him and took him to the orphanage, not when he could have his own person, solid and safe, his steady breath tickling the back of his neck every time he wakes from a nightmare.
