This is the respite that comes after a storm, after a calamity. This is the gentle fall of rain, the kind that inspires growth, not the kind that turns torrential, that threatens to wash everything away.
Tetsuya and Shigehiro already know how it feels to be soaked to the bone, to watch as the rain strips everything way, making rivers where there should be roads, claiming everything in its path. They know how it feels to shake like leaves in the thunder around them.
They don't need that any more. They don't want it.
Now, they are each other's shelter. A quietly burning fire on a cold winter's night, the warm weight of a jacket against the wind. Shigehiro burns warm and steady, and Tetsuya feels like a fire that is sparking back into life, learning what warmth feels like once again.
Together, they can wait out the rain, wait for the skies to clear, for the sun to shine.
Tetsuya knows better than to expect it to be immediate, because nothing ever is, but this is an easier path than the one he's just finished walking. This is a pleasant one, less of an uphill struggle and more of a comfortable meander. Shigehiro is beside him, their hands brushing together, their conversation a gentle murmur, the sounds of their voices mixing into something that reminds him of home, of a court that he once felt was a castle, a box of endless marvels.
"Tetsuya," he says, and his smile alone is enough to make Tetsuya feel like there's new air being breathed into his lungs, filling him with something that makes him feel light and weightless. "Do you want to play?"
The court is firm under their shoes, the ball familiar against their hands, but everything in between has changed. In Tetsuya, and Shigehiro too. At last, Tetsuya can stop feeling that the change is an unpleasant one. Shigehiro's laughter rings out, clear as a bell, chiming out to signal their return to something that they both held dear to them. His smile is like a light itself, shining, warming, and Tetsuya realises that he's smiling too, that he's laughing, no longer chasing the ball like he's chasing a dream just beyond his reach.
They're still smiling when the game is over, the sun sinking low in the sky, their skin painted gold and orange in the fading light of the day.
Shigehiro's lips taste of a warmth that Tetsuya thought that he had long-since forgotten. He smiles when Tetsuya chases it, their fingers curled around each other, their faces tilted towards each other. Their lips are curved, forever curving into smiles, and Tetsuya doesn't think he'll ever stop.
