PROMPT: Team Grandstand

Kominato Ryousuke/Kuramochi Youichi (daiya no ace)

24
"You’re in a car with a beautiful boy, and he won’t tell you that he loves
you, but he loves you. And you feel like you’ve done something terr-
ible, like robbed a liquor store, or swallowed pills, or shoveled yourself
a grave in the dirt, and you’re tired. You’re in a car with a beautiful boy,
and you’re trying not to tell him that you love him, and you’re trying to
choke down the feeling, and you’re trembling, but he reaches over and
he touches you, like a prayer for which no words exist, and you feel your
heart taking root in your body, like you’ve discovered something you
don’t even have a name for."

hannah this prompt killed me i hope ur happy

word count: 1583
tags: post break-up, brief reference to alcohol

Rain drums steadily on Kuramochi’s car, a comforting rhythm among the rows of empty streets. Kuramochi taps his fingers on the wheel and watches the road - it’s also pretty bare, but that’s expected at midnight on a weekday when most people have to get up early for work or school. Kuramochi’s work doesn’t start till later in the day anyway, but even if it started earlier, tomorrow is his day off and hence he’s just on his way home after spending the day with a few friends.

As the light turns green and he drives onward, he spots a figure standing by the nearby bus stop. Rain pours down on them; there’s no shelter at this particular part of the pavement, but they don’t seem to care about getting soaked through. Their face is hidden by a hood, and it’s not till Kuramochi draws closer that he realises who it is.

Ryousuke is standing on the pavement, hands in his pockets. Kuramochi’s stomach lurches.

A few weeks ago he would’ve just wound down his window and stuck his head out of it with a grin, asking why he was out here before offering to drive him back to their shared apartment. Except the Ryousuke he knows would definitely not have forgotten his umbrella, or forgotten to check the weather, or have much of a reason to be out at this time when he had studying to do, so this is unusual. Kuramochi isn’t sure how to approach him, or if he even should.

Plus, even if he wanted to, he can’t offer to drive him back to an apartment that isn't theirs anymore.

Even so, Kuramochi finds himself slowing despite his better judgement. When he stops near Ryousuke, the latter raises his head, staring at him through the windscreen.

Winding down his window, Kuramochi speaks first. “You okay?”

“I was waiting for the bus, if that wasn’t clear.”

“No shit. But how come you’re out so late?”

Ryousuke stares at him coolly. “I don’t believe that’s any of your business.”

Kuramochi huffs out a breath, because he can’t really argue with that; it’s been three weeks since they last saw each other and here he is, immediately prying into Ryousuke’s personal life when he should just be getting on with his own. But even so, looking at Ryousuke’s face, barely shielded by a soaked hood and streaked with rain, he doesn’t want to just leave him there.

Instead, he reaches across the passenger’s seat and opens the door. “I can drive you home.”

He expects Ryousuke to argue, but after a long moment he just shrugs noncommittedly and walks around to the other side of the car, slipping through the door and settling himself on the seat. After he’s ready, Kuramochi drives on.

He remembers the way to Ryousuke’s place only barely, but it’s enough, and Ryousuke doesn’t look like he’s up for talking. Although the car is dark, Kuramochi can tell he’s tired. There are dark shadows under his eyes and he’s staring straight ahead, looking like all the energy has been forcibly dragged out of him. The sight makes Kuramochi’s heart ache.

After they’d separated, Ryousuke had moved out (with Kuramochi’s help, because it was the least he could do) and Kuramochi had found a new place not long after; their old apartment brought back too many painful memories and he couldn’t pay the rent on his own. He’d made an effort to carry on with everything he would normally do – go to work, see people, move on – but whenever he asked anyone about what Ryousuke was doing they had barely any idea, not even Haruichi. It was like he’d cut himself off completely.

Funnily enough, a similar lack of solid communication was what had caused the break in the first place.

The atmosphere inside the car is tense, and Kuramochi decides the best way to fix that would be to talk. So he does.

He talks about Sawamura, whose place he was just at with Furuya and Miyuki and a few people Ryousuke barely knows. About work in the garage, which has been going steadily and has succeeded at taking his mind off the things from the past few weeks (though he leaves that last part out). He had takeaway for dinner yesterday and has leftovers. The neighbours next door have fights sometimes. The laundry machines have broken down twice in the past week.

Ryousuke doesn’t say much in return other than a few hums and short phrases. Even so, it does help dispel the thick atmosphere a little, even when he stops replying.

The reason for that becomes clear when Kuramochi reaches Ryousuke’s place; as he pulls up to the apartment block, he turns to him and realises Ryousuke has fallen asleep.

It doesn’t surprise him; he looks like he needs much more than just a short nap in a moving car. Kuramochi can’t bring himself to wake him, so he pulls out his phone for a little bit and waits.

After around ten minutes, Ryousuke stirs, rubbing his eyes. If the situation had been different, Kuramochi might’ve found it endearing.

Ryousuke blinks at him. “How long have I been here?”

Kuramochi shrugs. “Not long. Just a few minutes.”

Ryousuke hums, then after a moment, unbuckles his seat belt. Kuramochi’s heart thumps painfully in his chest, because Ryousuke is about to leave and he has no idea when he’ll next see him, let alone have a chance to actually speak to him. “Wait, Ryou-san…”

Ryousuke's hand pauses on the handle of the door. He looks at him out of the corner of his eye, and Kuramochi is almost surprised that he wasn’t ignored, but he isn’t about to waste the opportunity.

“I haven’t seen you in three weeks. What have you been doing?”

Ryousuke’s gaze hardens. “Didn’t I say that was none of your business?”

“I know. Maybe it’s not.” Kuramochi lets out a breath. “But you haven’t spoken to anyone else either, and… people are worried about you. Including me.”

Ryousuke turns his head away, his hand still on the door – any moment now he could just open it and slip out of Kuramochi’s sight without a word. But he doesn’t. His other hand twitches from where it’s resting on his leg, as if it wants to ball itself into a fist. The tension in the car has risen to almost palpable levels.

The break has been like a fog around Kuramochi since it happened, an obstructive cloud curling around his throat and mind and eyes, but he’s been alright at working through it, because he can’t go back no matter how much he may want to and he needs to accept that. But observing Ryousuke, his physical appearance and how he reacts to Kuramochi asking him questions, putting it out there that he still cares for his well-being – he can’t help but think that maybe Ryousuke had taken the brunt of it.

Kuramochi watches him, the tense slope of his shoulders and the white grip of his knuckles on the handle, and then reaches out. It’s impulsive and could go horribly wrong, definitely not an action called by the rational part of his brain, but he doesn’t hesitate and carefully rests his hand over Ryousuke’s.

Ryousuke starts. He doesn’t pull away like Kuramochi had been prepared for, but he can feel how tense he is just from this light contact, and his hand feels as cold as ice. After a few moments Kuramochi shifts his grip, sliding his palm under Ryousuke’s and lacing their fingers together. His heart is beating at a million miles an hour; it feels taboo, breaching the boundary they’d both worked hard at setting before going their separate ways, and yet neither of them moves to restore it. Ryousuke isn’t saying anything, but Kuramochi can feel tiny, tiny tremors though his skin. He isn’t sure if it’s from the cold, or something else.

He has to force himself to speak. “I’ll go with you. Inside.”

Ryousuke opens the door, his hand sliding out of Kuramochi’s. Kuramochi follows him, and he isn’t sent back.

His new place is uncomfortably unfamiliar, though it retains its neatness, contrary to Ryousuke’s current appearance. Kuramochi closes the door behind him with a click as Ryousuke goes to sit on the sofa, sinking into the cushions and pressing his fingers to his forehead, rubbing them in circles as if trying to dispel a headache.

Now that he knows this kind of action won’t be rejected, Kuramochi goes and sits next to him, reaching over. He lightly touches Ryousuke’s shoulders with his fingertips, encouraging, and Ryousuke takes the invitation and leans into Kuramochi with a shaky sigh. Kuramochi’s touch becomes more secure, holding Ryousuke in place, feeling his breath fluttering against his neck. Although he wishes it could’ve been in a different situation (and he's very aware of how sodden Ryousuke's clothes are) he finds that he’s missed this – Ryousuke’s warm weight against his side, his hair brushing against Kuramochi’s jawline, the soft sound of his breath in the dark. Among all this, Kuramochi catches a faint scent of alcohol that he hadn’t noticed in the car. His chest tightens.

He pulls Ryousuke closer, shifting so Ryousuke rests securely against his chest. “It’s okay. I’ve got you.”

They have a lot to talk about, but with the way Ryousuke’s fingers curl in the fabric of his shirt, he thinks that the thing they’re wishing for is ultimately the same.
