Say I’m young. Say the speeding rock of my body is as bright
as any resurrection, and I have time to shake before I hit the earth.

overwhelm the heart with heat
583 words, AO3
naoyuki realises it with a rising lurch in his stomach, the same way you only remember what you need once you’re already on the train, doors shut and distance moving too fast to find what you’re looking for. he bolts up for it anyway, knocks his head into the back of chris’ couch, spilling notebooks and upturning cushions all around him, the waning light of thursday afternoon washing the chaos into something golden, something worth looking at.
he sees it and he doesn’t, eyes glossing over the light on the floor, the sun painted walls and catching on everything else, insignificant in their familiarity and thus exactly what naoyuki’s looking for: two mugs still perched on the coffee table, empty save for the lingering hints of cocoa in the air; naoyuki’s sweater on the floor, discarded at a point in the past naoyuki doesn’t bother reminiscing for; chris, wandering into the living room, textbook in hand and footsteps muffled knocks for naoyuki to notice he’s there.
and naoyuki definitely notices him. sees the way chris comes closer, all soft eyes and fond mouth, predicts the tap against his temple with chris’ fingers and lets it happen anyway, chris’ mouth tugging up into a playful curve, a tightrope naoyuki knows how to walk but still hesitates in trying to navigate, sometimes.
“are you finished yet?” chris asks. fingers falling away from zaizen’s face, the impression of them stays, faint and flush along the skin of naoyuki’s cheek.
“depends.” naoyuki blinks, narrowing his gaze at chris. “on what you’re trying to start.”
chris relocates himself into the space on the couch naoyuki’s vacated, makes himself comfortable there in lieu of a response. when the response does come, though, all chris says is: “i, for one, am not planning on starting anything.”
i don’t believe you, naoyuki thinks, focus shifting from chris to where chris’ own focus lies, studying the landscape of the living room, possibly sitting in its own clearly allocated slot in chris’ memory: then and now, before and after naoyuki happened to it. like he’s a phenomenon, a situation only seen out by living through.
naoyuki’s not sure when he ended up unofficially moving in with chris, only that he has and now he doesn’t know how to stop, how to muster up the capacity to want to stop, let alone try.
“chris,” he begins, halting but not uncertain, “how do you even deal with me.”
chris’ reply is immediate, knowing.
“you,” chris says, referring to zaizen even as his eyes never leave the living room floor, the page of the book he brought in with him. “have never just been something to deal with.”
“what the hell does that even mean.”
“which part?”
everything, naoyuki thinks, nothing. but not chris, strangely enough, fittingly enough. in this room, in this moment chris is absolutely at home, reading his book and listening to naoyuki talk about whatever it is naoyuki’s trying to get across, might even be naoyuki himself.
and naoyuki feels like he might be fine with that, body coming to rest at its home well before naoyuki’s head learns to differentiate between a house and a home, or heart, the heat sliding under his skin, chris’ hand upturning his own to leave his there. holding onto chris’ hand, fingers dipping down so his thumb can circle over the softer skin near the inside of chris’ wrist, chris’ voice a steady wave of sound, naoyuki riding out its current, seeking out the shore.

(same, naoyuki. same.)

("a house and a home, or heart" is such a neat distinction to make)
and, lastly:
fingers dipping down so his thumb can circle over the softer skin near the inside of chris’ wrist, chris’ voice a steady wave of sound, naoyuki riding out its current, seeking out the shore.
i love this image of chris as a vortex of gravity pulling naoyuki in, of naoyuki wanting to be pulled in, agh.
