FILL: Team Kyoutani Kentarou/Yahaba Shigeru, T
word count: 444
If anyone asks him what he is doing, Shigeru says that he's warding himself.
They tend not to ask. They try not to make eye contact with him at all, as he coughs up blood and burrows his hand deeper into his own chest.
His heart beats, frantic and scared, but Shigeru thinks that it's better this way. Better he tear it out himself, before ever allowing it of another. Better that he dig his own fingers into his heart until it's pierced, until it bursts, until he can pull it out and hide it elsewhere, in a place nobody else would think to look.
He replaces it with pebbles, with smooth stones that knock against each other in his rib cage whenever he moves, like a false heartbeat that he can use to mask his lack of one entirely. The stones weigh him down but Shigeru knows that he was never meant to fly. He chooses to think of it as being grounded, not held down. Stones don't break, the way that hearts do. Stones don't seize and yearn and bleed, and neither does Shigeru.
Not for victory. Not for Kentarou, either.
Stones aren't moved by the murmur of a soft, deep voice, and lips that are warm as they brush against Shigeru's ear. They aren't drawn in, like a fish on a lure, swayed by words or actions or the gentle touch of rough hands.
Kentarou doesn't use his words often and Shigeru suspects that because of it, they hold some sort of power over him, like magic that is strong only because it is sparingly used, a stirring at the back of his mind that he can build no resistance against because it's gone before he can remember what it feels like.
Shigeru wants it just as much as he doesn't, half stepping back from the cliff and half throwing himself over and the stones in his chest clatter together with every syllable of sound that spills from Kentarou's lips, like they've been pretending to be a heart for so long that they're beginning to act like one. Shigeru tries to resist, already making plans to cut himself open again and replace these old stones with ones that are new, that haven't been tricked by his body to play the part of something they are not.
Kentarou looks at him, his gaze the colour of unchanging amber, and Shigeru already knows that it's no use.
Somewhere, locked in a box buried under a pile of older relics under a loose floorboard, Shigeru feels his heart beating just to spite him. He knows that this is a battle that he's already lost.
