Bonus Round 4: Quotes

Bonus Round 4: Quotes

A shipping olympics favorite, this round uses quotes of all sorts to fuel your creative endeavors.

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on July 21 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with a quote attributed to a specific person or character, along with any ship/ot3/etc. from one of our nominated fandoms.
    • Example: "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." - M. Gandhi
    • The quote can come from anywhere. Famous people, poetry, songs, books, movies, your neighbor, etc.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Makoto & Rin). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Makoto/Rin). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • Fill prompts by replying to the prompt with your quote-inspired fanwork.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

Hanai doesn't get it.

He doesn't really get Tajima one single bit. He doesn't understand how one person can embody so many things, how Tajima can be so immensely talented, so friendly, so inspiring, all at once.

Tajima connects with any kind of person, no matter who they are, just as unfailingly as he connects his bat with any kind of pitch that is thrown at him. It's easy to feel jealous of him, but he's still impossible to hate. They're teammates after all, Hanai thinks, but regardless of that, he doesn't think he could ever dislike someone who loves baseball as much as Tajima does, who throws himself into it and gives it everything that he has.

He's amazing. Hanai is comfortable enough admitting that now, at least to himself. He doesn't mind the fact that he looks up to Tajima, admires him, but it's more than that. Hanai is ready to admit that, too.

Hanai finds Tajima fascinating and wants to learn what makes him tick. He wants to know Tajima properly; it's easy to feel comfortable around him, but everyone feels that. Hanai wants something more. He wants the kind of understanding that doesn't just come from being teammates. He isn't even sure he'd be satisfied knowing Tajima as a close friend.

He wants more than that, and the thought catches him off guard, leaving him blushing a little as he fiddles with his helmet, pulling it down low over his eyes. He's in the dugout, watching Tajima on the plate, and it's always times like these that his mind wanders the most, caught halfway between paying attention to every single movement that Tajima makes, and trying not to focus on it too hard. Either way, his thoughts still end up centering around Tajima and that tends to happen to him a lot, regardless of the situation.

He's learning to get used to that too, the same way he's learning to get used to the idea of liking Tajima. He doesn't really feel like it's a new development as much as it's just the natural progression of things. His attention has been focused on Tajima since the very beginning―even before their team was actually a team. It makes sense, in a way. Whether it's about baseball or anything else, Hanai hasn't stopped thinking about Tajima for a while.

With a loud crack, Tajima connects his bat to the ball, sending it flying, bringing Hanai back to the present.

The team is cheering and Hanai joins in. Tajima might be too small to hit home runs but he's still good at the placement of his hits. He's good at getting on base, at moving between them, and making his way home.

The batter line up keeps moving, and Hanai moves out onto the field to get himself ready. He watches the pitcher, already eager to hit his fastball, just the same as Tajima did. He's going to hit it hard enough to get Tajima home. To get them both home, if he can.

From his place on first base, Tajima catches his eye and grins, like he can read Hanai's thoughts. Then, of all things, he winks too.

Hanai scowls, looking away, knowing that Tajima can see the way his face turns red.

He might not get Tajima, and might not know what he's thinking, but Hanai's willing to wait and learn.
