On warm nights like these, Shuuzo can pretend that he isn't alone.
There's a long road that leads down from the hospital, lit well enough that he can step out of the hospital when he needs to and take a walk to clear his head. He can feel the breeze blowing in from the ocean and there's a bridge about a twenty minutes' walk down the road, where he can lean against the railing, turn his face towards the sea, shut his eyes and think about Tatsuya.
He's thought about Tatsuya's lips so often that he can no longer tell whether it's a memory that lingers at the back of hi mind, or a detailed fantasy that he has revisited often enough that it feels real. Perhaps it doesn't matter. Either way, he can feel those lips against his, curved into the same gentle smile that he fell in love with when he first saw it, kind and welcoming. Shuuzo smiles in return and he can feel Tatsuya's fingers in his hair like the ocean breeze, ruffling it gently.
Except no matter how many times he does this, the images fade all too soon, like sand blowing away in the wind, castles crumbling to the ground, and Shuuzo is left feeling empty as the wind blows right through him.
He's drained. He's so exhausted that he's trembling with it, and he doesn't know where else to draw his strength from. Thinking of Teiko only causes him more concern, so he's been avoiding that as much as he can. His memories of Tatsuya will only work for so long, now that he's gone, an ocean separating them, and Shuuzo's heart aches for home without quite knowing whether that's here, whether it's his father's hospital room, or somewhere back in Japan.
All he wants is to feel safe and secure. He wants to stop dreading each day. He wants to know what it feels like to pass a day without feeling like he's being run into the ground.
Folding his arms arms across the railing, Shuuzo rests his head on them and lets himself come apart, just for a moment. His eyes sting with tears of frustration, his shoulders slump with defeat.
The wind blows gently around him again and Shuuzo takes a deep breath before he pulls himself back together. He wipes the corners of his eyes and squares his shoulders again, keeping his head high.
Turning back towards the hospital, Shuuzo starts walking again. He feels the wind against his skin and he lets himself indulge his imagination as much as he wants. He lets himself pretend that Tatsuya walks with him, their hands brushing against each other. He hears Tatsuya's voice in the gentle roll of the waves in the sea, feels his warmth in the lingering heat of summer.
He opens his phone as he walks, going to his emails and rereading the last one that Tatsuya sent to him. He strokes his thumb over the words on the screen, promising that they'll see each other again when Shuuzo and his family return to Japan.
Smiling down at the promise he has in writing, Shuuzo takes all the strength that he can from it, and pushes on.
