Mayuzumi knows all about being self-aware. He has to pay attention to everything around him, if he wants to be a good shadow, and he needs to keep an eye on how he's being perceived by others. He knows his place in the world at all times, no matter how it spins, no matter what else is happening around him.
Nijimura makes him forget all of that.
It's jealousy, Mayuzumi thinks, looking into himself as he always does these days whenever he feels a particularly strong emotion, habitually trying to break it down and understand it in himself so that he can understand it in others.
Nijimura, a year younger than him, stands there at ease and Akashi treats him with more respect that he's ever treated anyone in the entire year that Mayuzumi has known him.
It's curiosity too, he realises, standing there and watching them interact, the way he's watched countless interactions between countless people. Cataloguing their mannerisms, the way they interact with the world around them, so he can slip between the cracks.
He isn't good enough at it to escape Nijimura's attention, though, but perhaps that's because Nijimura has played with Kuroko on his team. Mayuzumi can admit that Kuroko's skills as a shadow surpass his own. If Nijimura can see Kuroko, then Mayuzumi must stand out like a sore thumb.
Something passes over Nijimura's face, a mix of disbelief and exasperation, and he glances in Akashi's direction before walking over, holding his hand out with a friendly smile.
"You must be Mayuzumi. I'm—"
"Nijiumura," Mayuzumi finishes for him, because it would be impossible not to know his name. He wonders if anyone at Teiko ever learned how to use their manners, other than Kuroko.
"You're pretty interesting," Nijimura tells him, so direct that it makes Mayuzumi freeze up a little. He must notice and of all things, he smiles. "It must have been difficult, learning to be a shadow in a much shorter span of time than Kuroko had. You have to constantly be aware of yourself, right?"
"I don't know how to stop," Mayuzumi replies honestly, comfortable admitting it when Akashi is out of earshot. He can feel his palms sweating even now, the prickle of hair on the back of his neck. "I'm not entirely sure how to stop paying attention to other people, either. For what it's worth, I think you're fascinating, yourself."
Nijimura grins, looking over his shoulder to where Akashi is speaking with the rest of the team. "I don't think he'll mind if I borrow you for a bit."
"Teach me how to do that," Mayuzumi says, without thought. "How to make a decision and have Akashi agree to it, instead of making you feel like it was his suggestion all along."
Nijimura laughs. "Sure. Over coffee?"
There's no space for coffee in the meal plan that Akashi has written out for Mayuzumi, but he supposes that it doesn't matter any more, now that they've played their final game.
"Lead the way."
