"Any ideas?" Jun asks, stopping his frequent pacing to ask his friends the question.
"Would've told you if I had one," Ryousuke says, elbows resting on the table as he flips through the pages of a book.
"No," Tetsu replies, a much simpler answer.
Jun sighs. They've been trying to crack the riddle of what the second task of the Tournament would be for hours now, and at this point, they've only got a few left before it'll start. All they've managed to figure out is that it's going to be in the Black Lake, but they can't figure out the rest of the clue.
"We've still got a few hours," Jun says, resting his hand on Tetsu's shoulder as he passes him, squeezes. "We'll figure it out."
Before they can say more, Takashima turns the corner, looking relieved that she found them here. "Isashiki? The headmaster would like to see you."
"Now?" he asks. "What for? It's the middle of the night."
"I'm sorry. It's urgent."
He looks from Takashima telling him to go, back at Tetsu, who he wants to help figure this out before morning, before the second task starts. "But--"
It's Tetsu who answers, this time. "Go ahead, Jun." He takes Jun's hand, now resting at his side, slides their fingers together. "I'll be fine."
"I... fine!" He looks at Takashima again. "Just give me a minute."
And then his focus his back on Tetsu, and he squeezes his hand, a promise. "I'll be back."
Tetsu's got a promise of his own. "I'll figure it out."
He grins, laughing a little at the certainty, the determination behind the words, in Tetsu's eyes. "I know. It's you we're talking about here."
Ryousuke clears his throat, drawing their attention again. "You're keeping Professor Takashima waiting."
Jun's face heats up as he remembers there are others watching them. "Right! Well, bye Tetsu!"
"Bye Jun." Tetsu waves goodbye as Jun follows Takashima out of the library.
"You want me to what?"
Kataoka seems completely unperturbed by Jun's shouting, only explains, "For the second task we need to take someone important from each champion. They have an hour to reach the bottom of the Black Lake to find you."
"And you want me to...?"
"You're important to Yuki, aren't you?"
Jun's cheeks heating up are answer enough, but he still manages a strangled. "Well, yeah!" followed by his confirmation. "Okay, I'll do it."
He doesn't remember much after that, and the next thing he knows--seconds, minutes, hours later--he's at the surface of the water, able to breathe again, Tetsu by his side, trying to catch his breath.
"Are you okay?" The first thing Tetsu asks, his hand resting on Jun's back as they move toward the dock.
"Me? I should be asking you that!" He climbs out first, offering Tetsu a hand to help Tetsu out of the water. "I'm fine, though. You?"
"Fine." Tetsu doesn't let go of Jun's hand right away, even as they're ushered off to the side, given towels to dry off and get warm in the late winter cold.
They're mostly silent, then, just sit close together, still touching.
"I was worried when I couldn't find you this morning," Tetsu finally says, quiet.
"Yeah. Wish I could've told you. But you did it!" He punches Tetsu's shoulder, grinning. "I knew you would! And you got second place too!"
Tetsu smiles now, finally leaning closer. Their foreheads bump together in a gentle touch.
