Bonus Round 5: Myth & Lore

Bonus Round 5: Myth & Lore

Summer's a time for swapping stories around the campfire. With that in mind, this round draws inspiration from the stories humanity have told each other over the centuries.

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on August 4 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

RULES
  • This round does not have prompts. Instead, we ask you to draw inspiration from the wide pool of mythology, fantasy, folklore, and fable. An urban fantasy or supernatural AU? A re-imagining of your favorite folk tale? Characters swapping ghost stories or playing D&D? As long as your fill in some way incorporates the fantastical and/or supernatural, it's welcome here.
  • Your fill still has to be about a ship from one of our nominated fandoms. What ships you create work for is up to you, though.
  • To submit your fill, simply leave it as a comment as a reply to this post.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each

434 words, mirror guardian!Bokuto

Akaashi regards the bottle of pine-hickory oil in his hand carefully, and raises an eyebrow at Bokuto.

“Are you sure it’s alright for me to have this?”

Bokuto flashes a thumbs up, smiling generously as he reassures Akaashi. “Yeah, it’s fine! I can get more from the Willow Witch during my next visit, so don’t worry about it.”

“Doesn’t she live a hundred and twenty candle winks away from here?” He inquires again. As much as he needs the oil as an ingredient for the sprouting potion he’s experimenting on, he’d feel a bit guilty if Bokuto had to travel past nearly half the state just to get a replacement. “Isn’t that troublesome for you?”

The other boy pointedly clears his throat, whirls around, vanishing into the long mirror behind him. The mirror’s surface wavers for a moment, then, its murky opaqueness finally gives way to Bokuto’s sunny expression. “Akaashi— have you forgotten that I’m a mirror guardian?” Quick as a passing shadow, he disappears from view, only to pop up again in a smaller circular mirror that Akaashi uses for divination. “I can go anywhere as long as the area has a mirror or something with a reflective surface, so there’s no need to worry about me! You’ve got enough on your plate as it is with All Hallow’s Eve reservations.”

Pocketing the bottle into his pouch, Akaashi nods in affirmation; ever since he had opened the doors of his brewery shop to the public, he had been flooded with all sorts of orders, ranging from bittersweet antidotes to rainbow-coloured temperament potions, and it’s been exhausting to try keep up with every customer’s request but Bokuto is always swift to help where he can— to varying degrees of success, that is. Akaashi recalls the one time the mirror guardian had accidentally spilt a cauldron full of dandelion puffs, staining the whole shop floor cloud white. Still, he appreciates the sincerity in Bokuto’s sentiment, and always leaves a bowl of rose caramel ice cream for him to enjoy as his show of gratitude.

(Akaashi likes seeing the happiness that loosens Bokuto’s features every time he digs in with a grateful you got me my favourite again!)

He picks the mirror that Bokuto’s currently in and places it on the window sill, huffing a soft laugh at Bokuto when he notices the boy squinting because of the sunlight pouring the panes. “I hope you don’t mind me putting you here for the moment. I need to charge some solar power for tonight’s scrying.”

Bokuto grins in reply. “I’m always up for a spot of sunbathing!”
