"Hey," whispers the guy in the four poster bed just across from Shintarou's in the Ravenclaw dormitories. "Hey. You're awake, right?"
Not even bothering to pull his curtains aside, Shintarou looks up from the book he's currently reading under the light of a lumos and says, "Evidently."
"Awesome," comes the reply, and then the guy is actually pulling Shintarou's curtains open and sitting on the edge of his bed. "Hey. Do you collect chocolate frog cards?"
Shintarou blinks, not having known what to expect, but definitely not expecting that. He knows the boy sitting opposite him—Takao Kazunari—is a muggleborn. It's been two days into their first year at Hogwarts and Shintarou has already lost count of how many times Kazunari has exclaimed excitedly over something that Shintarou has always just taken for granted. Moving paintings, food appearing on the tables of the Great Hall, all of it thrills Kazunari to no end.
He was expecting all of Kazunari's excitement to get irritating very quickly, but there's something about the boy that makes it difficult to dislike him. He's so determined to enjoy every single thing around him that it makes Shintarou appreciate it in a different light. It's suprising just how much Shintarou finds himself appreciating Kazunari's enthusiasm.
"I do, in fact, collect chocolate frog cards," he answers at length, lowering his book and shutting it, because he has a feeling he isn't going to be reading very much of it for the rest of the night.
"I used to collect cards back home," Kazunari tells him, "but they didn't move like these ones. Some of them were foils, or holographic, but man, you guys get cards with moving pictures, like it's no big deal. I can't believe it. I'm not even sure if I'm jealous, or if I'm glad that I never had these as a kid because let me tell you, I'm already seriously considering just living off chocolate frogs until I get all the cards."
"That would take a while," Shintarou says. "In fact, I have a collection that exceeds three hundred cards. I didn't think to bring them all with me but I'll send for them if you'd like—
"Send for them," Kazunari says with a laugh. "What are you, some kid from this big, rich wizarding family?"
Shintarou shifts uncomfortably. Kazunari laughs even harder.
"Seriously? That's it, Shin-chan. Dibs on going to your place for the holidays."
"Shin-chan?" Shintarou repeats, raising an eyebrow.
"You'll trade cards with me, right?" Kazunari asks. "That's it. We're best friends, Shin-chan. No backing out now."
With a sigh, Shintarou just adjusts his glasses and doesn't even bother protesting.
