This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on August 18 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

- Choose a fanwork created by other participants in a previous main or bonus round of SASO and create a new piece based on it. You could create a fanart of another work, an FST inspired by a piece’s style, retell another person’s fanfic from another point of view, create a new fanfic inspired by a great piece of art... go wild!
- You cannot remix your teammates' works.
- You must have permission from the original creator. There's a blanket permissions post here (feel free to add yourself to it!), or you can leave a comment on their original post asking for permission.
- You must include the dreamwidth link to the original work in your post.

His cover's been blown. He's not sure who told, or how they found out, but he knows almost as soon as it happens. His first hint is when he walks into the convenience store, and the clerk behind the counter won't meet his eye, looking nervously past him and out onto the street. When the clerk excuses himself to the back for a minute, he takes the hint and leaves immediately.
His second clue is when familiar faces from the gang start coming out in force not long after he leaves, all clearly looking for something…or someone. He sticks to the alleys and deserted side streets and hopes no one notices him.
He had received the orders ten months earlier, and at the time, it had seemed like a simple mission, or, at least, as simple as they came in his line of work. Now, he just hopes he can make it out alive, and that the proof he has so far is sufficient.
He knows he should abandon the mission and pull out immediately, but he still has important things in the house he's been sharing with the boss and the rest of the gang's inner circle. He's been staying there since the day he was accepted into the gang; it's been his home for nearly a year now. It's a risk, but one he has to take; he can't leave without at least trying to go back one more time.
Even as cautious as he is, he's nearly caught when he slips out of the last alley before the house, and nearly runs into a couple of the boss's personal guards stationed outside of the house. He sees them before they see him though, and he slips back into the relative safety of the alley.
He smells smoke, and he knows he's running out of time. He sticks to the shadows and weaves his way around into the abandoned building that borders the apartment. There's only a narrow alley separating the two, and it's easy enough for someone with his training to use a conveniently-located fire escape to slip into an open window on the second floor of the apartment.
He had already prepared himself for the worst before he entered, but that doesn't make it any less unpleasant. The boss's sister is lying on the bed with a bullet hole in her forehead and a gun in her hand, but the drying pool of blood across the room tells a different story.
He looks across the room, and sure enough, her child is still there. Flames are already creeping across the floor and licking at the furniture. To his horror, one springs seemingly from nowhere as he watches and twines around the legs of the crib.
The child's cries snap him back out of his thoughts. Without thinking, he rushes across the room, grabs the child, and escapes the same way he entered. The exit is more difficult now that he has one arm occupied, but he manages.
He stops just long enough to snuff out the flames smoldering on the edge of his pants before he takes off sprinting in the opposite direction as fast as he can. He's only a couple of blocks away when the explosion rattles the windows of the buildings around him, and he looks back to see the flames leaping up over the rooftops.
The child in his arms starts crying more loudly, and he hopes no one hears. If anyone notices him and his child right now, they're both dead.
He committed the entire handbook to memory years ago, but it's one paragraph in particular that jumps to mind now. He can't give up the child, not after everything else. He needs somewhere safe.
Fukutomi and Toudou immediately come to mind. He's barely been able to communicate with them since he started this assignment, but he's sure they'll understand. He changes direction at the next intersection he finds, turning in the direction of their house.
He scribbles a note on the back of receipt he digs out of his pocket and leaves it on the doorstep with the child. Then he runs back the way he came, stopping at the first pay phone he sees just long enough to call his handler and request extraction.
He's less than a block from the pickup point when the first bullet punches through his shoulder. He staggers back a few steps before gritting his teeth and sprinting forward. He just has to make it around the next corner.
The second bullet catches him in the calf, forcing him into an awkward, limping run. He knows he's moving too slowly, but his body won't go any faster.
The third bullet buries itself in his thigh as he turns the final corner, sending him sprawling on the ground as the backup team rushes out. He's barely conscious as a couple of the agents carry him to the waiting ambulance.
A phone ringing shatters the tense silence of the house. Fukutomi answers it without interrupting his nervous pacing. Toudou glares at him, silently willing the child in his arms not to wake.
"Hello?" Fukutomi says.
Toudou can't hear anything more than a dull murmur from the other end of the line, but he sees the way the blood drains from Fukutomi's face. He stops rocking, waiting until the droning stops, and Fukutomi says, "I understand."
Fukutomi hangs up.
Toudou holds his breath.
Finally, the silence breaks.
"Shinkai's been shot."
