Bonus Round 6: Remixes

Bonus Round 6: Remixes

The event's almost over, and you've made it this far, congrats! This round encourages you to look back at everything the SASO has made and use it as inspiration.

This round is CLOSED as of 7PM on August 18 EDT. Late fills may be posted, but they will not receive points.

RULES
  • Choose a fanwork created by other participants in a previous main or bonus round of SASO and create a new piece based on it. You could create a fanart of another work, an FST inspired by a piece’s style, retell another person’s fanfic from another point of view, create a new fanfic inspired by a great piece of art... go wild!
  • You cannot remix your teammates' works.
  • You must have permission from the original creator. There's a blanket permissions post here (feel free to add yourself to it!), or you can leave a comment on their original post asking for permission.
  • You must include the dreamwidth link to the original work in your post.
  • Since all fills are based on previous works, there will be no prompts for this round. Simply post your fill as a comment in response to this post.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

Posts not using this format will be understood to be unofficial discussion posts, regardless of what they contain. They, like all comments in this community, are subject to the code of conduct.

SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many fills as you want!

For fills:

First 3 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 4-10: 10 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21+: 2 points each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only.

Have a question? Check The FAQ first. If you still need help, feel free to contact the mods. Happy fanworking!

He watches Rakuzan play from the top of the stands, looking down over the court, eyes following a streak of red for hours and hours.

Game after game, he watches other teams fall—in many cases, literally—to the overpowering capabilities of Akashi Seijurou and four of the five Uncrowned Kings.

He feels his stomach churn. His hands twitched to bring a stop to this somehow, to stop the progression, the spiral.

Akashi was always intense. Nijimura knows this, remembers the gleam in Akashi's eyes and the determination etched into every bone of his body. He remembers what it felt like to play next to that kind of power, to bear witness to such power and ability.

This, though—this is corrupted. This is wrong. This is power and ability left unchecked, allowed to conquer and take and take and take.

Years ago, he saw the potential of this. He knew that it wasn't outside the realm of possiblity.

He hoped that the Akashi he left would be the one that made sure he was left alone—unless Akashi knew he didn't want to be.

He hoped that the Akashi that took the captaincy would be the one who was observant but mindful, testing boundaries carefully in such a way that Nijimura never had to say a word.

He hoped that, if that all failed, if nothing else—the rest of Teiko would keep him in check, would somehow manage to hold each other together.

He's watched more than a few games this season—he knows by now that was just a naive fantasy.

Knowing that he might have somehow had a hand in this—even if it was family that pulled him away, even if he has no regrets (only a longing, only a wish)—makes his hands twitch.

Nijimura almost doesn't stay for the final game. Seirin and Rakuzan—a dark horse and the best of the best. There's only one possible outcome.

But then he sees a bolt of blue, a flash of red (darker than Akashi's, a frame broad and strong and rough around the edges). He stays.

From there, he's overtaken again, watching them both try to outdo the other, arcing birds trying to fly higher and higher—

Akashi reaches the sun first, and he falls. Seirin wins.

Nijimura grips the guardrail, knuckles aching.

Akashi shakes off the dust—he rises.

Nijimura isn't sure, really, if he imagines the shift in Akashi's presence—the ease of his body, the way he reaches out to take Kuroko's hand, not seeking to control but to bridge.

Somewhere in his room there's a thick book that he never finished—an unfinished story.

———

Three days later, Nijimura walks into the Rakuzan High School gym.

Before, at Teiko, Nijimura had no basis for comparison when it came to Akashi; he was always collected, poised, in control.

He's all of those things now, too, but it occurs to Nijimura that this Akashi isn't something constructed but someone real, layers stripped away to let the core breathe freely. His words are firm—observant, but mindful.

Nijimura only just manages to subdue a smile as he draws up beside him without announcement.

Akashi turns, and his eyes widen just a fraction at the sight of him.

"Nijimura-san," Akashi says.

Nijimura doesn't say anything at first; instead, he extends what he brought with him.

"Finally finished this."

Akashi takes the book, eyes flickering to its cover before returning to Nijimura's face. "You took your time."

And so did you, he thinks, and he smiles.
