Bonus Round 1: AUs

AUs

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

This popular round is back once again! To begin this year's SASO, we encourage you to let your mind run wild with alternate ideas and settings.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with an alternate universe idea, along with a ship from one of our nominated fandoms. There's a comment template below for your convenience.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Izumi & Sakaeguchi). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Izumi/Sakaeguchi). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • An AU can be a canon divergence, e.g. "what if [character] was the Team Captain instead of the canon captain character?", or a completely different setting altogether, e.g., pop idol AU, coffee shop AU, superheroes AU, etc.
  • Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

This prompt sure knew how to treat me right. I sure did want to spend twice as much time and twice as many words on this but then I'd never write anything else the whole round, so it's time to move on. I love and will miss this good good prompt.

He's here again.

That guy with the sunshiney smile and the aura as light and floaty as his hairstyle is currently picking through rows of seed packets. Toudou isn't sure what it is that unsettles him about this guy's presence, exactly. He has seen him walk into the place next door day after day, never at the same time of the morning, always yawning. And he's taking to spending his lunch breaks here; walks in like a breeze, smelling like disinfectant and counter-culture. Maybe that's what it is that makes Toudou's shoulders tense up of their own accord. Or maybe it's that this guy doesn't suit the image of the disreputable business that apparently employs him. He is too carefree, too pretty, and there certainly isn't any ink on his smooth skin. At least, not anywhere that Toudou can see.

Done with the seeds, Mr. Next Door moves on to examine a bouquet of violet and orange blooms. One of Toudou's. It's always Toudou's work he spends a lot of time fawning over, his eyes skipping dismissively over the arrangements of every other employee. Of course, that than be nothing more than a coincidence! There's no way he could know. It's just—a little unnerving, in a way.

Today, he's going to let this guy know he can't keep loitering like this. He's had enough.

"Is there anything I can help you with?" His tone clearly suggests kindly buy something or get out.

Mr. Next Door looks up at him with a peaceful smile that makes it evident that he notices no such subtext, and nods. "Could you tell me where these are grown? The orange ones."

Oh, so he has an actual question. Toudou blinks.

"Nearly everything you see here was grown locally in our family-owned garden plots." He realises this is the first time he's said anything to this guy more than welcome, and curiously, he feels himself soften. "Have those caught your eye?"

"Very much so." He walks over to the counter, and Toudou sets aside the account book he's been examining. Rather than a loiterer, it seems he may have a customer to attend to. "It's Toudou-san, isn't it? The sign outside..."

He nods. "The eldest son, Toudou Jinpachi."

"Manami Sangaku." A blindingly bright smile. "We're neighbours!"

"I know," Toudou says. He purses his lips. "That is, that you work there." Barely concealed distaste as his eyes flick in the direction of the shared wall between their stores.

"This one, you know?" Manami looks back at the bouquet he was examining before. "I really like it. It understands the balance of nature."

Uncharacteristically, Toudou finds that he doesn't know what to say. "Thank you?" He manages after a moment.

Manami's eyes widen. "Did you make that one?"

"I did." Toudou bites his lip. "It's my favourite colour combination." Why is he telling this practical stranger such a thing?

"How much?"

"3900." He would talk it up more, drop some trivia about history and flower language, but he can already tell he's not speaking to the kind of person who would drop that much money on flowers on a whim.

Sure enough, Manami peeks into his wallet and makes an apologetic face. "Ah, then—I want that one." He points elsewhere.

Toudou follows his finger to the display of long-stemmed red roses.

"Just one, please."

Toudou rings him up, and the airhead leaves his purchase on the counter and turns to leave.

"Excuse me, sir?"

"Manami Sangaku," He repeats over his shoulder. "It's for you, Toudou-san."

And with the faint chime of a bell, he is gone, leaving Toudou standing there alone holding a single red rose.

The following day he's back again, already smelling one of Toudou's arrangements when Toudou walks out from the back room.

Manami looks briefly startled to see him, for some reason, but then his usual peaceful smile settles over his face. "Is this one yours too, Toudou-san?"

Toudou scrutinises his face for a long moment, then nods. "Yes."

"Ah, so it really was..."

It's impossible to tell what he means, so there is nothing but silence for a minute or two.

"Is it silly to give a rose to the son of a flower shop?" Not that Manami sounds self-conscious or anything; merely curious.

"Unusual to give one to a stranger, perhaps." Toudou twirls a strand of hair around his finger. "May I ask a question in return?"

Manami faces Toudou directly now, hands folded behind his back, offering his full attention. "Of course."

"You're the only one who works there whose skin isn't covered in ink. Why is that?"

"Hmmmm..." Manami glances at the ceiling. "I don't have much of an interest in tattoos, I think?"

"Even though it's your job?"

He shakes his head, and this time he does look the tiniest bit self-conscious. "I'm not much of an artist. I'm a piercer, actually."

Toudou's mouth falls gently open on a silent ah—the missing piece of a puzzle; it makes sense now. But, then—

"You haven't got any piercings, either."

Manami giggles. "Forgive my rudeness?" And then he sticks out his tongue, which is accented with a bright silver stud.

Toudou is overheating; the air conditioning must be broken.

--

It’s a Friday afternoon when Toudou barges through the door, shoulder pushing against the glass pane so he can keep the bouquet in his arms steady.

A girl with close-cropped hair and painted deep-turquoise vines twining up one arm greets him, looks at the bundle he’s carrying with curiosity, and promptly calls out “Sangaku? It’s your—it’s you-know-who.”

Manami appears, hair a mess, rubbing at his eyes. And Toudou watches his cheeks flood with colour as the tattooed girl disappears into a back room.

"Is it the same one?" Manami wants to know.

Toudou raises an eyebrow. "Of course not; that would be wilted now, if it hadn't already sold. I... remade it."

"For me?" Manami's eyes are sparkling.

"For the shop," Toudou says emphatically, averting his eyes. Well, he'd thought that maybe he would bring something beautiful in to make this place feel less threatening, but it actually hardly needed his help. It's clean, white walls accented by neatly framed pieces of artwork and pretty glass display cases for jewelery. It actually looks like a perfectly reputable business, in spite of Toudou's fears.

"Beautiful," Manami breathes. "I'm grateful for your kindness, Toudou-san."

"Yes, well." Toudou watches Manami find a place for the flowers on the front desk, then step back to admire them. "I was hoping I could ask something of you."

"Anything at all!" Manami beams, and seems entirely too sincere.

"I've been thinking about it for a while," Toudou says. "But, well—one of those things in the back of one's mind that one never really gets around to. Although I suppose I am getting around to it at last, wahaha!"

He's rambling as Manami dips a little white plastic stylus into a pot of purple ink, tongue poking out of his mouth in his concentration to mark Toudou's earlobe in just the right place.

"I think it will suit you, Toudou-san." Manami places the stylus and ink back on a metal tray that Toudou is trying desperately hard not to look at, because if he sees the actual needle he will lose his nerve and be out the door before Manami can blink. But soon the sharp smell if disinfectant hits his nostrils—a much stronger version of the faint suggestion Manami always carries with him when he comes in to look at flowers and say cryptic things about... what was it? The balance of nature.

"It's going to sting for a moment," Manami warns him. "But after a count of three, the worst of it will be over."

"I-I see."

"Well," Manami laughs, "I say 'the worst of it,' but do you want to know something?"

Something about his tone of voice makes the hair on the back of Toudou's neck stand up. "Hmm?"

Manami is very close to his ear, and Toudou catches a glint of metal out of the corner of his eye. "I actually think it feels really, reallllly good."

Toudou gulps. "Ready?"

A nod, because. What else is there.

Sting is maybe not the right word for it. The feeling is sharp and unforgiving and buzzes at his nerve endings, distracting enough to make his breath catch and his eyes prickle with tears.

"One," Manami says.

Toudou mouths along. "Two."

A very, very long second filled with panic.

"Three."

It is... exactly as Manami described. Three seconds exactly, and the pain goes from intolerable and abort abort to something much quieter and more manageable.

It still certainly doesn't feel good, which means that either Manami was lying, or there is something very, very wrong with him.

In a black-framed hand mirror, Toudou examines the damage. Although, he really can't regret it when he sees how nicely the little metal accent complements his features. It does suit him, he thinks with satisfaction, and holds his head a little higher. Blinks his eyes until it's very clear that he did not almost cry, thank you.

Manami walks him through care instructions, hands him a printout that clarifies the information. He doesn't even attempt to be subtle about scrawling his phone number messily along the bottom, either.

"Please don't hesitate to come to me if you have any questions at all, Toudou-san."

The instructions are perfectly thorough and straightforward.

Still, Toudou might be able to come up with a question or two.

I don't even know where to start with all of the ways in which this fill was made for me. I guess first with Manami always coming over to look at the flowers and having a far better eye for them than Toudou expects. My favorite line though is definitely "either Manami was lying, or there is something very, very wrong with him." I love the not-so-subtle hint that Manami has a masochistic streak a mile wide (and Toudou definitely doesn't (but he'll try things anyways for Manami's sake)). I love these characters, and I love this content, and both at the same time is such a lovely gift.

Thank you! This is beautiful!

I love Toudou coming to Manami for inspiration (whether it's the flowers or the florist that are the inspiration remains to be seen).
