Bonus Round 1.5: AUs

AUs

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Second verse, same as the first! This is an overflow post for br1, meant to hold new prompts and their fills (so that we don't hit comment cap on the first br post).

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. (There are changes from last year!)

RULES
  • Submit prompts by commenting to this post with an alternate universe idea, along with a ship from one of our nominated fandoms. There's a comment template below for your convenience.
    • Your prompt MUST include some kind of relationship. (This is not the sports anime gen olympics.) Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Izumi & Sakaeguchi). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Izumi/Sakaeguchi). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!
  • An AU can be a canon divergence, e.g. "what if [character] was the Team Captain instead of the canon captain character?", or a completely different setting altogether, e.g., pop idol AU, coffee shop AU, superheroes AU, etc.
  • Fill prompts by leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work.
  • Remember to follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points each (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

My entry for "KnB and Tenipuri exist in the same universe" initative, 2k17

***

When Mitobe finds Shinji’s old racket one day in his room, he’s unaware of the plot that blooms in his boyfriend’s mind.

“It’ll be fun, I swear!” Shinji tells him, dragging him through the gates and onto the tennis court. “You showed me how to love basketball, so it’s only fair I return that favor with tennis.”

There’s a question on his lips though, as Mitobe watches Shinji greet his old middle school friends across the net and introduce everyone. Why doubles? It would be so much easier if Shinji taught him how to play singles. That way they could play against each other and not have to depend on other people.

But here they are and Shinji’s friend, Momo?, Mitobe already forgot, starts bouncing the ball for his serve.

“Get ready, Mitobe, Momo-chan has a great serve, but don’t worry, I told him to go easy.” The laughter in his voice makes Mitobe relax and grip his borrowed racket a little harder.

The serve blasts right by his face, leaving his hair to fly right into his eyes.

“What a jerk, HEY, I TOLD YOU TO GO EASY, MOMO!!!”

“THAT WAS EASY, YOU’RE JUST GETTING SOFT!”

“Oh, now he’s asking for it, Mitobe. Let’s get ‘em.”

And at the sight of the slight glow in Shinji’s eyes, Mitobe quickly picks up on the fact that that basketball isn’t the only magic sport in the world.

-

They lose the first set spectacularly at five games to one, but it’s fun.

By the fourth game, Mitobe grows comfortable enough at the baseline and returns a few balls too. Though he’s still a little confused about the one that went around the outside of the net. Shinji waves it off as legal because it lands in their court, Mitobe is positive that can’t be allowed. Tennis is weird.

By at the end of their second set, though, it’s clear why Shinji wanted to play doubles. It’s similar to that rush of…something that he gets on the basketball court, passing or receiving a ball from his teammates, but here it’s only him and Shinji. It’s like playing two on two but his defenders are on the other side of the net and Shinji has his back the whole time. And every time they actually score a point and Shinji looks to beam a smile at him, well. That sure gives him a feeling too.

They play through a third set even though Shinji’s friends have already destroyed them enough and Mitobe ends up splayed out on the court after match point.

He closes his eyes as Shinji talks and says goodbye for him to his friends, overhearing something about having to settle a score in a singles match before the sunsets.

The sound of footsteps alert him to Shinji’s return and when he opens his eyes, there’s a hand waiting to help him up.

“You know,” Shinji starts, pulling him up and grabbing their rackets. “I played both singles and doubles in middle school but doubles was always more fun. It’s lonely on the singles courts, but in doubles, there is always someone to depend on. In basketball, it’s kinda similar because we have our team on the court, so there are a lot of people that have your back and I think that’s why I love basketball now. But in tennis, in doubles, you only have one other person, so you get to connect to that person a lot more, I think.”

He zips up his racket bag and looks up with that special curled smile of his. “I wanted to see what that felt like again, but with you. Thanks for playing along for the day.”

Mitobe picks up on the hint of sadness in his voice and reaches out to squeeze Shinji’s hand. They would definitely play doubles again. No doubt about that.

I am glad that this initiative exists. Poor Mitobe though, being thrown into tennis against the Seigaku kids and their magical tennis with no warning. I suppose it's good practice for him though given the magic basketball Seirin ends up with/against during the Winter Cup. Koganei quietly missing Oishi hurts though (and so does Koganei wanting to see what doubles feels like with his new partner).
