Bonus Round 2: Tic-Tac-Toe

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Get three in a row! That's the goal of this bonus round. Inspired by a fanwork event type called kink bingo, this round encourages you to create and fill out themed prompt cards.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. There's a lot of text here, but if you read carefully and follow the instructions step by step, you will be okay.

RULES

Please refer to the first comment thread of this post for an example of how this round works.

PROMPTING

1. Select a ship to create your prompt card about. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Haruki & Kazuma). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Haruki/Kazuma). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!


2. Visit this card generator.
   • Here is a visual guide to using it.
   • The large text box is where you can list prompts if you have your own ideas. Please list at least 9 prompts; you can list more if you want. (The generator says you need at least 24, but it's lying.) Single words or short phrases are better than sentences.
   • Otherwise, you can use the dropdown menu found right below it. Note: some of these prompts lists are NSFW. (NSFW prompts are a-ok as long as you tag for it.) If you don't like some of the options that appear in a prompt list, you can delete them.
   • Text prompts only, please. Also, each card square must be unique—don't list the same prompt 9 times.
   • In "Configuration Options," make sure you select 3x3 and (Normal prompt). This is the most important step!
   • Leave the tic-tac-toe card with its default colors, so everyone can read it clearly.
   • Click the "Create a bingo card" button.
   • Scroll down to see the card that was created for you. If you don't like the prompts it picked, you can reroll by clicking "Create a bingo card" again.
   • When you're satisfied, scroll further down the page until you see a textarea box full of HTML.
3. Copy and paste the HTML from the box and into the body of your prompt comment, then post!

FILLING

Fill prompts by selecting an individual square to create fanwork for, then leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work. (Optional:) If you can fill three squares from a prompt in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line, you get a tic-tac-toe (and an additional point bonus)! You can also just fill prompts as you please and get standard points.

• Prompt squares are labeled as follows:

  A1	B1	C1
  A2	B2	C2
  A3	B3	C3

• If you're trying for tic-tac-toe, you cannot combine squares into one fill. If your fill can satisfy multiple squares, pick the most relevant square: e.g., one square is sailing and another is pirates and you make a fill about pirates sailing, it's mostly pirates so put down the pirates square.
• Each fill must stand alone as an individual piece, but all your fills can slot into a larger universe if you'd like.
• You cannot fill a prompt square more than once, but you can fill every square on a tic tac toe card if you want to.
• You cannot work with your teammates to get a tic-tac-toe. Only individually achieved tic-tac-toes get the bonus.
• Multiple people can fill the same prompt square. You cannot "block" others from getting tic-tac-toe.
• Remember to also follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.

These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points for each tic-tac-toe card (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each
Tic-tac-toe Bonus: 2 points each for the first 12 achieved by your team

i think this might be my fave because i love what-if scenarios like this, and i love miragen angst over "well so-and-so's doing fine on their NEW team, i'm FINE, don't ask"

Aliens are real, Oikawa tells him when they are twelve and stupid, bare knees skinned and warmed by the summer sun. He tells Iwaizumi this with the sort of certainty that makes Iwaizumi think of birds flying across fields in the autumn.

They are walking home; Oikawa is staring at the stars that are just staring to peer at them, the sunset drawing away the last of the day, and where he has a gap in his teeth where a baby tooth has fallen away.

That vehemence turned into obsession, Iwaizumi thinks wryly. He lets his fingers trail across the bookshelves packed with DVDs and paperbacks, binders of printed conspiracy theories and stuffed aliens plushes. They are eighteen and still stupid, and Iwaizumi can feel the gruff fondness creeping up the edges of his lips when he sees Oikawa watching him with sleepy eyes.

"Iwa-chan," Oikawa complains, when Iwaizumi turns on the light, pulling his covers over his head.

"Tooru," Iwaizumi says, eyes scanning the room.

There's a pause, and Oikawa pulls the covers off of his face. His eyes are narrowed, scrutinizing Iwaizumi as if he has been replaced by a stranger.

Iwaizumi exhales, moves to tug the curtains in Oikawa's room shut more carefully, and says, "Aliens are real."

Oikawa blinks slowly at him, eyes starting to shine in excitement. "Iwa-chan," he says, soft.

"I should have believed you," Iwaizumi interrupts. "Just-- don't go outside. People are disappearing, and there are-- there are things floating in the sky and it isn't safe." He pushes his hand roughly through his own spiked hair, exhaling sharply. "It's not safe, and you need to stay inside."

Oikawa frowns at him, doubtlessly about to argue that this is the perfect moment to go outside, to actually meet aliens, and Iwa-chan isn't his mom and can't tell him what to do. Because Oikawa is furiously smart but tramples over his own limits, until his strength and his energy is stretched tight over impossible boundaries.

"Don't argue with me," Iwaizumi says, quick.

"Iwa-chan, I know aliens are real," Oikawa says. "I've known that for a while now."

Iwaizumi wants to shout, frustration bubbling under his skin, because this isn't like when they were children and aliens were a fun tale to spin.

"I know they're real," Oikawa says, finally climbing out of bed to press fingertips to Iwaizumi's shoulder. "Because you're not. Not anymore."

"What do you--"

"Tell us your happiest dream," Oikawa recites from memory, draws the sleeves of his nightshirt away to expose the patches plastered onto his skin, needles digging into the veins of his too-thin limb. They're easy to read, even in the blurring edges of the room. JOY. MEMORY OF A LOST FRIEND. ADVENTURE. "We'll make it come true, in exchange for all the time you have left."

Iwaizumi catches Oikawa's hand, lacing their fingers together even as he feels the edges of his consciousness go dark.

Oikawa leans towards him, smiles sadly. “But you’re not him.”

SCENE 1 - INT - SCHOOL - DAY

OIKAWA and IWAIZUMI are sitting at their desks. The classroom is slowly emptying out and they are packing their bags. They laugh, and Iwaizumi shoves Oikawa lightly on the shoulder after a particularly smarmy grin.

OIKAWA:
(voice over) Have you ever known that there was someone out there for you, who you wanted to stay beside forever? Not in a romantic way, but a--

[CUT TO SCENE IN VOLLEYBALL GYM]

OIKAWA sets a ball that IWAIZUMI perfectly spikes, whistle is blown for the point. Zoom in on OIKAWA and IWAIZUMI's triumphant faces and the roar of the crowd.

OIKAWA:
(voice over) --person who makes you feel like they'll always understand you, that make you feel alive?

[CUT TO SCENE IN LOCKER ROOM]

IWAIZUMI pulls off his uniform shirt, revealing a muscled back. OIKAWA stares at him, frozen.

OIKAWA:
(Voice over) [after audible pause] I haven't either.

SCENE 2 - EXT - SCHOOL HALLWAY - DAY

OIKAWA and HANAMAKI are walking together, in uniform. There is a small crowd of people around a window, peering outside at the outside courtyard.

HANAMAKI:
Hmm, what's going on?

GIRL:
There's a boy confessing to Iwaizumi from 3-5!

Close up on OIKAWA's suddenly pale face. He pushes open the window, calling out and disturbing the pair below. The smile on his face is shark-like

OIKAWA:
You aren't allowed to skip practice just because you have a boyfriend, Iwa-chan!

[CUT TO EMPTY HALLWAY, LATER IN DAY]

IWAIZUMI:
You didn't have to embarrass him like that, Shittykawa.

OIKAWA:
I just wanted to let him know where your priorities are.

IWAIZUMI sighs in frustration, walking away. In the background, OIKAWA's sharp grin falls.

SCENE 3 - INT - SCHOOL - EVENING

The gym is empty, except for OIKAWA, MATSUKAWA, AND HANAMAKI.

HANAMAKI:
We're staging an intervention.

OIKAWA:
Oh, are we finally going to talk about your horrible spike earlier?

MATSUKAWA:
You're in love with Iwaizumi.

OIKAWA:
What.

HANAMAKI:
You keep tossing us the balls he likes.

MATSUKAWA:
You're more willing to buy us food if he comes along.

HANAMAKI:
It's okay, you just have to stop being a dick.

SCENE 4 - INT - SCHOOL - DAY

IWAIZUMI and OIKAWA are talking in the hallway before class starts.

OIKAWA:
I do apologize for being so rude to you and your little...boyfriend earlier. [winces]

IWAIZUMI stares blankly at OIKAWA.

SCENE 5 - INT - VOLLEYBALL GYM - DAY

IWAIZUMI grabs MATSUKAWA by the arm and pulls him aside.

MATSUKAWA:
I don't know if this is appropriate--

IWAIZUMI:
There's something wrong with Oikawa.

MATSUKAWA:
...You should invite him out to eat, see if he'll talk to you.

SCENE 5 - INT - FAST FOOD RESTAURANT - EVENING

IWAIZUMI and OIKAWA are seated across from each other, eating with very little conversation.

SCENE 6 - INT - HOME - EVENING

OIKAWA is on the phone, speaking to HANAMAKI.

OIKAWA:
He invited me on a date so quickly!

IWAIZUMI is on the phone, speaking to MATSUKAWA.

IWAIZUMI:
There's definitely something wrong.

“Do you trust me?”

Shuu’s voice is quiet and rough like the choppy surf from far away, like the motions of his thumbs across the heels of Tatsuya’s hand. His gaze is steady, unwavering, meeting Tatsuya’s, and Tatsuya’s torn between trying to memorize every bit of this and knowing it’s only going to be more painful when he leaves and knowing that he’s going to forget too much anyway like a faulty cassette tape tangled and scrambled and worn down by the machine.

Shuu is still waiting for an answer, patient and steady, an anchored ship. The question is simple on the surface, but even a fraction of an inch below it starts to get murky and complex, difficult to navigate. Tatsuya trusts Shuu’s instincts; he trusts Shuu’s sincerity right now (as much as it drives him into a corner). The future is unknown; Shuu may have the right intentions now but Tatsuya doesn’t want to tie him down to a relationship with someone an ocean away when he’s young and attractive and there are plenty of people out there he could take a chance on (plenty of people more worth it than Tatsuya, if it comes down to that). And Shuu doesn’t know (though he suspects, at least, that there’s something) what’s waiting for Tatsuya over in Japan, the face of his own inadequacy, something that may find him returning in a worse place than he started. Tatsuya trusts Shuu more than he trusts himself, but he can’t trust the world around them or the other people in it.

“Yes,” Tatsuya says. “I trust you.”

“Then listen when I say I want to be with you. Even if I’m here and you’re in Akita for however long, I don’t want to give up on us.”

There’s nothing accusatory in his tone but Tatsuya feels it anyway, cutting him from the inside out. He’s no quitter; Shuu hadn’t meant that he is, but it’s already so hard to let go. It’s easier to loosen his grip before it tightens around Shuu and stunts him or holds him back. But maybe it’s already too late.

Tatsuya remembers Alex, telling him and Taiga that they have to take risks and that’s where the best rewards come in, farther shots and drives through bodies; he sees Taiga take that to heart and get up and try to dunk once and then again; he feels the exhaustion in his body as he takes the opposite approach, calculating distance and depth and shot after shot after shot, trying to minimize the risk at the source. Maybe it’s the wrong way around, but at this point does he still have time to change?

He nods his head, waits for his body to react, his heart to thud or his mind to tell him that this is a mistake, that Shuu’s going to end up hating and resenting him, that the next time he’ll see Shuu his face won’t be so tender. But Shuu kisses him before he can really start to think any of it.

This is always a fun pairing to write!

Atobe's insight was legendary. It first made a name for him on the tennis courts, but that was only the beginning. He quickly rose through the ranks of the business world with one shrewd decision after another putting his name on everyone's radar. The business journals all declared him the new superpower to watch, and the management at rival companies all feared the day they drew the short straw and had to face him in negotiations.

By the time he became the youngest board member in the history of his company, everyone had heard of him, and more importantly, had heard of his insight. They said that when one was in a meeting with him, he would look up with his piercing blue eyes, and then it would be over. He could see through any attempt at dissembling, exposing even the deepest of secrets and filing them away to use for his own ends at a later point.

Less than a month after Atobe moved into his new corner office, his vision began to fail. It was subtle at first, a slight haze that hung over the pages of his notes and blurred the letters on his computer screen. He purchased glasses in the latest style and wrote them off as a concession to fashion and to too many late nights spent with his laptop. But his glasses could only slow the inevitable.

It wasn't hard to hide his condition from his rivals. His insight was still stronger than theirs, even as shaky around the edges as it was, and his rivals both feared and admired him, two emotions that were easy to steer in the directions he wanted.

No, the biggest threat to his position wasn't from any outside company; it was from the CFO who sat in the office adjacent to his. Like Atobe, Oshitari Yuushi had risen quickly through the company hierarchy, and it was no secret that he had his eye on a board position and corner office of his own. He didn't have Atobe's insight, but he was cunning nonetheless and had an arrogance and drive that matched Atobe's own. And whatever he lacked in insight, he made up for with an unshakable poker face.

Oshitari's carefully schooled expressions were unreadable even to Atobe, but not even Oshitari could keep every gesture and twitch under that degree of control. After years of their game, Atobe had learned to read Oshitari's tells like an open book—the way Oshitari's eyes flicked to the corner as he thought and darted back to Atobe once he had made his decision, even if his words continued to vacillate. The way his fingers tightened ever-so-slightly on his pen when he felt cornered, even if he put on a mask of nonchalance.

They were all tells Atobe relied on to continue to hold his position of dominance, and he was rapidly losing his ability to discern any of them. He had never said anything publicly, but he knew that Oshitari had known even before the day Atobe's insight faltered during one of their skirmishes, and he caught Oshitari watching carefully.

He also knew that Oshitari knew that their battle was far from over. He was not going to give up that easily.

1. Kousaka Reina

Slim and slight, daughter of a business partner. Long hair, long legs, a smile like clear summer days. Smart and witty, wicked sense of humour and sharp tongue. Coffee over tea, very much a modern girl and loves travelling. Met during a society function where they danced and charmed everyone, predicted to be married within the next three years. Slightly superstitious, enjoys reading horoscopes over breakfast. Spirited and opinionated, wears flowers in her hair very often. Fiancé, marriage planned for next autumn.


2. Kamikita Chihara

Curvy and vivacious, friend of a friend. Loved chocolate milkshakes but hated chocolate ice cream, complaining they never tasted quite right. Secretary to a department head in her company. Terrible cook, could burn water but baked wonderfully. Best macaroons Akashi's had outside of Paris, stress baker. Blunt and straightforward, earnestly so. Played the guitar sometimes, would dance in the rain and drag Akashi with her. A bad breakup, but loved for her spirit and whimsy.


3. Sorata Kazuo

College acquaintance, majored in astrophysics. Tall, with a fascination for the stars and a passion for storytelling. Laughed a lot, also very knowledgeable about tea and tea ceremonies. Excellent taste in teas, with a fondness for white teas and flower teas. Quiet and observant, a thoughtful gift giver. Sister in London, whom he adored and spoke of very fondly. Hated having messes around, a tendency to stay up very late to stargaze. Kissed Akashi during a meteor shower in the middle of nowhere. Only other boy Akashi had loved, a mutual breakup. There are some regrets, but they are still friends.


4. Takeda Mitsuki

Short hair and big eyes, class representative. Treasurer of the Student Council, confessed after a meeting for the winter term. Used to want to be a school idol, but never became one. Loved eating outside, despite the weather. Deathly afraid of thunderstorms and planes, but wanted to travel the world despite it. Plans to become a high flying finance director in a global company. Breakup just before graduation, a high school relationship that would not have survived. Lost touch after the first year of university, loved for her bravery and determination.


5. Midorima Shintarou

Middle school friend, vice president of the basketball club. Firm believer of horoscopes, always carried a lucky item with him. Long range basket shots, patience and dedication. Played the piano and shogi, persisted despite numerous defeats at Akashi’s hands (in shogi and otherwise). Very much a traditionalist, enjoyed having tea ceremonies where time permitted. A younger sister he cared for deeply, and watched out for. Alienated in high school, and the relationship never quite recovered. A bittersweet reminder of regrets and unfulfilled promises, a friendship that is as steady as a mountain. The first boy Akashi ever loved.

wow wow wow wow wow WOW I love this! I don't read much Murasakibara (let's be real, I only finished KnB during BR1 of SASO so it's not like I've been reading much KnB at all) so it was really interesting to see how you write him!

That line is gloriously sparse and incisive, getting right to the heart of what it means to never have people believe that you really are as bad as you are.

Also the deliberate ineloquence of 'nice-tasting food' because yes, of course that's Murasakibara, he isn't going to rhapsodize over it. Your third person narrative is TIGHT and fantastic.
