Bonus Round 2: Tic-Tac-Toe

Tic-Tac-Toe

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Get three in a row! That's the goal of this bonus round. Inspired by a fanwork event type called kink bingo, this round encourages you to create and fill out themed prompt cards.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. There's a lot of text here, but if you read carefully and follow the instructions step by step, you will be okay.

RULES
Please refer to the first comment thread of this post for an example of how this round works.

PROMPTING

  1. Select a ship to create your prompt card about. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Haruki & Kazuma). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Haruki/Kazuma). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!

  2. Visit this card generator.
    • Here is a visual guide to using it.
    • The large text box is where you can list prompts if you have your own ideas. Please list at least 9 prompts; you can list more if you want. (The generator says you need at least 24, but it's lying.) Single words or short phrases are better than sentences.
    • Otherwise, you can use the dropdown menu found right below it. Note: some of these prompts lists are NSFW. (NSFW prompts are a-ok as long as you tag for it.) If you don't like some of the options that appear in a prompt list, you can delete them.
    • Text prompts only, please. Also, each card square must be unique—don't list the same prompt 9 times.
    • In "Configuration Options," make sure you select 3x3 and (Normal prompt). This is the most important step!
    • Leave the tic-tac-toe card with its default colors, so everyone can read it clearly.
    • Click the "Create a bingo card" button.
    • Scroll down to see the card that was created for you. If you don't like the prompts it picked, you can reroll by clicking "Create a bingo card" again.
    • When you're satisfied, scroll further down the page until you see a textarea box full of HTML.
  3. Copy and paste the HTML from the box and into the body of your prompt comment, then post!

FILLING

Fill prompts by selecting an individual square to create fanwork for, then leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work. (Optional:) If you can fill three squares from a prompt in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line, you get a tic-tac-toe (and an additional point bonus)! You can also just fill prompts as you please and get standard points.
  • Prompt squares are labeled as follows:
    A1 B1 C1
    A2 B2 C2
    A3 B3 C3
  • If you're trying for tic-tac-toe, you cannot combine squares into one fill. If your fill can satisfy multiple squares, pick the most relevant square: e.g., one square is sailing and another is pirates and you make a fill about pirates sailing, it's mostly pirates so put down the pirates square.
  • Each fill must stand alone as an individual piece, but all your fills can slot into a larger universe if you'd like.
  • You cannot fill a prompt square more than once, but you can fill every square on a tic tac toe card if you want to.
  • You cannot work with your teammates to get a tic-tac-toe. Only individually achieved tic-tac-toes get the bonus.
  • Multiple people can fill the same prompt square. You cannot "block" others from getting tic-tac-toe.
  • Remember to also follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

If you see anyone breaking the code of conduct (e.g., causing drama, being rude) anywhere (not just DW), please contact the mods immediately.

SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points for each tic-tac-toe card (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each
Tic-tac-toe Bonus: 2 points each for the first 12 achieved by your team

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

Have a question? Check The FAQ first. If you still need help, feel free to contact the mods. Happy fanworking!

***

By the bank of the river, Shinsuke finds a spot in between swaying reeds. When he crouches down, they’re almost as tall as he is; the fireflies scatter at his approach, a sudden burst of light that blooms and disappears behind the trees.

He has come far enough that the bridge is a faint red shadow in the glow of the lanterns, and the chatter from the crowd rises on the warm wind, slips through the cracks of the fading hour as easily as the day that’s come and gone. It is easier to hear in the dark, and to see, too.

With steady hands, Shinsuke sets his own lantern down on the surface of the water and watches it drift away.

“Awful music this year, huh?”

Shinsuke stands, hands in pockets. The shamisen sings a rousing tune that might be just this side of slightly tipsy. “They call it traditional, I believe.”

On the shore across from him, Suga makes a face and wrinkles his nose in the general direction of the festival. Privately, Shinsuke shares his opinion, but he can leave well enough alone when it comes to respecting customs, especially when they have to do with honouring the departed.

“I hope you’ve had a good year, Suga-san,” says Shinsuke, inclining his head in polite greeting.

Suga grins. “Good enough, I guess.”

He’s dressed plainly today. The knees on his jeans are scuffed, and his sneakers are old, their colour an earthy sort of brown where they used to be off-white. He has not changed them since they last met. Shinsuke finds the familiarity comforting.

“I joined the volleyball team! Made some new friends,” Suga continues.

The breeze stirs. Through the pricking on the edges of his mind, Shinsuke nods. "I'm glad to hear that."

“We came to the festival together. I left them somewhere around the choco banana stall. Well, at least I left Daichi and Asahi, I think Shimizu-san’s sensibly gone for watermelon instead…”

Shinsuke spots the small paper bag in Suga’s hand now, as he waves it at him and takes out a chocolate-dipped banana with rainbow sprinkles.

“Wish we could share this,” says Suga lightly.

Shinsuke glances downward, watches the river run. There is a sunset beneath the ripples, breaking, flowing towards the sea.

Maybe we will, one day, he wants to say. Maybe I will play volleyball with you. Or against you. I would like that, I think.

But his considerations are a jagged path, and Suga, he knows, will notice, as he notices everything, and so Shinsuke asks instead, “Did you tell your friends where you were going?”

Suga smiles. “I said I had to catch up with someone I hadn’t seen in a while. You look well, Kita-san. I’m glad too.”

“As well as I can be,” says Shinsuke, and Suga’s smile finds its own moonlit reflection on his lips.

They settle into a companionable silence. This is Shinsuke’s favourite part. He feels, for this sacred, mundane, awfully human moment, that he can breathe.

Slowly, slowly, the fireflies emerge from their hiding places. On the other side, they make a little sky of stars around Suga.

As the last of the lanterns floats out of sight, Shinsuke looks up at the darkening night, knows their time is drawing to a close. He takes one more last, long look at Suga and asks him the same question he asks every summer, because there are rituals, and there are things they do not forget.

“Are you a ghost, Suga-san? Or a memory?”

Suga murmurs something, a whisper lost to the water. From this shore, Shinsuke thinks he sees a twinkling spark in the corners of his eyes, right where the laugh lines crinkle.

“What about you, Kita-san?”

The dancing flames light the way home down the river. Suga’s voice is a warm flicker, and if Shinsuke could cup it in his hands, it would feel like that, he thinks, just like one of those candles. Not quite fearless, no—but brave, and bright, so bright—

He opens his mouth to answer. He does not know if Suga hears him.

The distance between them folds, breathes, exhales, and then he is gone, and Shinsuke is alone with the fireflies once more.

This one is pretty literally inspired by the prompted song, because I love this song so so much ♥

***

For a school Seidou’s size, there is a frustrating lack of convenient places for two boys to meet alone in the dead of night. Miyuki is fiercely proud of the team’s enthusiasm and dedication, but when it means that even the equipment storage shed will be home to some kind of late-night practice shenanigans, he can’t help but be resentful, just for a moment, that he signed away all rights to a normal teenage life.

And then Kuramochi subtly reveals the contents of his pocket during class, the key to the roof of their dormitory, and Miyuki is glad for the fact that loud, rancorous, borderline stupid Kuramochi still has all the instincts of a yankii.

Miyuki doesn’t bother stopping by his room, and immediately heads up there after his bath, grateful when the doorknob turns in his hand and for the cover of darkness that will shield them from wandering eyes. Not that he thinks anyone will have reason to look up; he doesn’t foresee them making too much noise.

Kuramochi is there, sitting on the concrete with his knees pulled up to his chest. As Miyuki approaches him, he feels the biting breeze of being at one of the tallest points on campus and shivers.

“You idiot,” Kuramochi growls when they’re close enough to make out each other’s details. He gestures to the towel around Miyuki’s neck. “Did you come right here from the baths? Do you want to die?”

Miyuki starts to retort, but cuts himself off as he’s blanketed with warmth; he looks at himself and sees Kuramochi’s team jacket hanging around his body. He should laugh and reject the kindness, but slips his arms into the sleeves instead.

“Now you’ll be the one to freeze,” Miyuki comments, just this side of gleeful.

“I’m not the captain. I’m also not the dumbass who forgot to dry his hair.”

Miyuki decides to confirm this for himself, and brings his fingers up to thread in Kuramochi’s hair. It’s unstyled, and soft without the typical handful of gel. Miyuki’s fingers run through it easily, nails grazing over his scalp. Kuramochi shudders.

“Cold?” Miyuki teases, voice full of laughter.

“No,” Kuramochi murmurs, leaning in so close his breath fans out over Miyuki. “Hot.”

He’s not sure who bridges the gap between them; maybe they meet in the middle where their lips collide with the fervent urgency of two teenagers who are breaking too many rules in one night. Kuramochi folds himself into his jacket, too, arms around Miyuki’s waist and hands on his back, up under his shirt. Miyuki thinks he’s learned well, to take everything he wants while he can.

Just as he thinks that, with his fingers threaded in the fine hair at the base of Kuramochi’s head, the other pulls out of the kiss just enough to bite Miyuki’s lip.

“Stop thinking.”

“You’re a savage,” Miyuki protests, a hand coming to his lip.

“It’s not even bleeding,” Kuramochi answers dismissively. “You have to stop. Stop thinking about how you’re going to break up with me.”

“Does it count as breaking up when we never actually went out?”

“This isn’t funny, Miyuki. What are we doing right now?”

“I thought this was making out.”

“And you make out with tons of people?”

Miyuki shifts backwards ever so slightly, away from Kuramochi and his growing rage. “Admittedly, not as many as I’d like to…”

“Bullshit. Stop playing this fucking game, Miyuki.”

“Are we playing a fucking game? You should have told me, I would have skipped underwear.”

Kuramochi screams internally, and Miyuki is grateful that he’s being conscious of his noise level. He’s also upset, because hurting Kuramochi hurts, but that’s thankfully been buried under layers of repression and self-criticism.

“I don’t get it,” Kuramochi finally huffs, scuffing his sneaker against the floor. “You know I like you. And I’m fairly certain that you like me, too. I know you like to think you’re inscrutable, but I know you better than that, Miyuki.” Miyuki opens his mouth, but before he can get a word out, Kuramochi adds, “And yeah, I said ‘inscrutable,’ you’re not the only one who knows shit.”

“Fair. Listen, I know you think you want this, but—“

“Nope. Denied. Give it to me once and for all, Miyuki, the truth. If you want to make out on the roof, you’ve gotta deal with being my boyfriend. Hand holding and first names and all of it.”

“Sounds gay.”

“Exactly. But if you can’t handle that gay shit, then you walk out, and we’re done. So what’s it gonna be. Do you love me, or not?”

The tryst has become a standoff. Miyuki wants to be angry with Kuramochi for wasting their time, time they could be putting to much better use, but he can only find it in him to be annoyed with himself for letting it get to this point.

Because Kuramochi could do so much better than him. Miyuki knows he saw Kuramochi and Kominato-san each missing the looks the other gave him for the better part of two years. He’s seen the way some underclassmen get sparkles in their eyes when he gives them attention. He knows he himself is obnoxious and impossible.

Right now, he looks and sees Kuramochi, whose eyes reflect a steel that’s evident in his body, too, the way his shoulders are taut and his spine is straight. He looks like he’s ready to fight, but he’s handed Miyuki all of the power —

Miyuki reaches out and laces his fingers with Kuramochi’s. Kuramochi inhales sharply, then all but jumps on Miyuki, and punches him in the shoulder.

“You stupid piece of shit, Kazuya,” he swears vehemently, but the telltale hiccups of his crying make it clear there’s no bite to his bark. Miyuki squeezes his hand and wraps his other arm around Kuramochi’s back. Kuramochi punches his arm, and hard, but Miyuki says nothing because he probably definitely deserved it.

“Did you think I was going to say no?” He wonders, voice coming out smaller than he’d intended.

“You’re selfish enough to.”

Miyuki hums, and kisses Kuramochi’s neck where it’s close to his lips. “I’m sorry, Youichi. I’ll make up for it.”

“You'd better.”

***

This is a stupid thought, but not baseless, and this is probably what makes Kageyama anxious. They have matured, resolved many issues and now have years of love under their belts, and even if they keep reminding him they are happy and that they wouldn't have it any other way, Kageyama can't help the little voice in his head telling him to be careful. Telling him to not screw up, to remain composed, to listen to what people say (generally speaking).

He just spent so many years wondering if they would ever go back to the way they were in middle school that the fear of being hated again lingers in his mind.

So he's been extra nice since they moved in together, preparing breakfast when he can and giving words of encouragement when they need them (even though he's sure they aren't that effective). If they're looking at him funnily because of his antics, they don't force an answer out of him, and he's glad for that. Kindaichi smiles at him and gives him a one-arm hug almost daily, Kunimi gives him a nod that is full of gratitude and his eyes just light up long enough for Kageyama to notice. They live peacefully. They fight sometimes, of course, but nothing irreparable.

One day at lunch Kunimi brings up a topic that they haven't talked about ever since they moved in.

“My boss says that I'm probably going to get transferred soon in the South. Something about polishing my skills with a senpai.”

“Yeah? I guess that was bound to happen,” Kindaichi replies, thoughtful. “Do you know how long?”

“Not yet. Long enough for you guys to miss me, I hope.”

“We're not going to miss the crumbs you leave on the couch or your burnt omelets.”

Kunimi rolls his eyes and Kindaichi grins, while Kageyama lets out a small chuckle. They rarely leave Kunimi on his own in the kitchen for fear he's going to burn the whole place down with his carelessness, though he seems to try developing a keener sense of self-preservation.

“The house won't really feel the same without all three of us in it,” Kageyama adds, and earns a few puzzled looks. He fidgets in his seat. “Isn't it true? I mean, we've been living here together for a couple of years, so...”

“Yeah, I get what you mean,” Kunimi says. “If Kindaichi isn't here every morning to monopolize the bathroom, I would get nervous.”

“Hey!”

“And if we don't have entire packs of milk stored in our kitchen I would think something's wrong.”

Kageyama stays quiet for a moment, processing what Kunimi just said while Kindaichi is making indignant noises about him not monopolizing the bathroom. Habits are said to be hard to break.

“Do you really mean it?” he finally asks.

“Mean what?”

“That something would be wrong?”

Kunimi stares at him, then reaches across the table to flick him on the forehead. Kageyama yelps, his hands flying to the injured area, and he's outright pouting.

“What was that for?!”

“Of course I mean it, idiot,” Kunimi deadpans. “You live here. You're stuck with us.”

When the silence stretches, Kunimi nudges at Kindaichi to say something too, and Kindaichi looks like he doesn't know where to begin.

“Yeah, we love you, you know? That wouldn't be normal for us not to miss you when you're not here.”

Kageyama's heart is racing, but in a good way, making him feel giddy and relieved, a bit too excited for simple words.

This isn't in his habits, but he gets up and asks all the same.

“Can I hug you both?”

They are probably too stunned to properly answer, but Kageyama wraps his arms around them and softly laughs. A second later he's patted on the back, accompanied by fond whispers of 'stupid' and 'dumbass'.

LINN how could I pass this one up. You brought this on yourself, but if it helps, you can consider it a prequel to the other one ;D

Just before he started his third year of high school, Morisuke and his mother went to the zoo. He remembered the way she had paused while they watched the elephants being fed, and looked at him which such a sad expression that he'd been momentarily convinced she was dying. But then she'd just laughed, and taken his hand, and told him to make the most of his last year of school.

"It'll go by so quickly," she said, squeezing his fingers so tightly it hurt. "Make the most of it. Don't leave anything you'll regret."

Morisuke had laughed, and promised, and then there had been training camp, and the qualifiers, the week laid up in bed while he rested his ankle, an awkward Christmas eve date with a girl in his class, Nationals. Before he knew it, they were graduating, and there was nothing to do but wave goodbye to Kai and Kuroo, and promise to meet up before Yaku moved away to university.

Plans kept falling through for nearly a month; one of them would be busy, or something would come up, but eventually they managed to keep their word. They visited Nekoma, and watched a practice match with Karasuno, but going back so soon made them feel awkward and unwanted, and Morisuke could tell that Kuroo especially was unsettled by the experience. He pulled Kuroo aside after Kai had caught the train, and dragged him to a nearby cafe.

"You're sulking."

"You don't know that."

Yaku kicked him under the table.

"Ouch! Why is there no love in your heart, Yakkun?"

Eventually, when they were done tormenting one another, Kuroo sighed and began to talk. About school, and the team, and everyone being so far away.

"You're not even moving," Morisuke said, kicking him again gently. "You can see Kenma and the others anytime you want."

"Kai's going to Osaka," Kuroo said, looking out of the window. "And you--"

Morisuke sighed. Kyoto was far, but it wasn't that far. "I'm not going to the moon," he said crossly.

Kuroo laughed. "It feels like that."

Maybe it was because Morisuke knew he would secretly miss Kuroo, or maybe they were both trying to assuage each other's anxieties about leaving school, but they spent almost every day together after that. Morisuke remembered his mother's words.

Don't leave anything you'll regret

Two nights before Morisuke was due to leave, he and Kuroo lay on the roof of Kuroo's apartment building, staring up at the heavy sky.

"I can't believe you're going so soon," Kuroo said.

Morisuke hummed. "I have to give you something."

Kuroo turned to him, his grin vivid in the darkness. "A souvenir?"

"Something like that," Morisuke said, and then he leaned over and kissed him.

It didn't last very long. After a few seconds, Kuroo began to kiss him back, and moved his hand up to cover Morisuke's fingers on his chest. Then they both pulled away, and blinked at one another, neither wanting to speak first.

"So that's it," Morisuke said at last, rolling onto his back again. "That's all it was."

Kuroo touched his own mouth with his fingertips. "Was that a statement," he said at last, his voice very soft. "Or a question?"

Morisuke's face burned. He looked away. "Neither. Both."

"You're leaving."

"Yeah."

Kuroo was quiet for a long time. "I kinda feel like you already answered your own question," he said at last.

Morisuke felt suddenly hollow. "Okay," he said. After a moment, he pushed himself to his feet. "Fine. Then I'll see you around."

"Yakkun."

Morisuke sighed, but didn't turn around. "Yeah?"

"I'll miss you."

Sanae-chan

Sometimes it was hard to believe that the Natsuo in Sanae's memories and the Natsuo that walked the halls were the same person. Before, Natsuo had been- well, she'd never been entirely considerate, but she hadn't been cruel, either. Just too young and too talented, and she didn't understand that not everyone could do what she could. Sanae could see it in her eyes, the genuine puzzlement when she asked “What do you mean, you can't do that? It's so easy.” Sanae, though not as naturally gifted as Natsuo, understood. Some things came easier to some people, and when you're young it's simple to think that the things you can do are perfectly normal.

Natsuo had looked up to her, once, called her Sanae-chan and started karate. Then things had changed. She'd changed. Sanae still wasn't entirely sure what happened, other than it had something to do with Natsuo's ass of a brother. She never understood why Natsuo was so loyal to him- he didn't deserve it. Not like Sanae did, Sanae, who had rescued Natsuo and befriended her and helped her learn how to fight. And yet, when Sanae beat him, Natsuo turned on her instead of realizing that her brother was no one worth looking up to.

Sanae wondered (didn't want to, but wondered all the same) what things would be like if they'd stayed friends. If Natsuo hadn't turned on her and humiliated her with that awful smile on her face. It could be Sanae and Natsuo and Mai in the karate club, winning tournaments. A senpai and her beloved kouhai.

Or was that too optimistic? Maybe Natsuo had always been one undeserved victory away from the disrespectful brat she'd become. Sanae's blood boiled every time she heard someone talk about how Natsuo acted in gym, in clubs, in class. Every time she saw Natsuo looking bored or smirking, Sanae longed to beat some respect into her. She was good, true, and she'd beat Sanae before, but Sanae knew she could win. She'd been working hard this entire time, and Natsuo was lazy.

If Sanae beat her, maybe Natsuo would stop being such a brat. Maybe she'd realize that talent only gets you so far; hard work is better. At the very least, she'd stop walking around with that superior attitude. She wouldn't deserve it (she didn't deserve it now).

Natsuo had called her Sanae-chan, once. Maybe, one day, she'd call her that again.

I'm going to try a couple of different things on you, Sanae-chan.
