Bonus Round 2: Tic-Tac-Toe

Tic-Tac-Toe

SASO 2017 is over, but this round is perpetually open to new fills (no new prompts).

Get three in a row! That's the goal of this bonus round. Inspired by a fanwork event type called kink bingo, this round encourages you to create and fill out themed prompt cards.

Please read this whole post before commenting to ensure that your team gets the most points possible. There's a lot of text here, but if you read carefully and follow the instructions step by step, you will be okay.

RULES
Please refer to the first comment thread of this post for an example of how this round works.

PROMPTING

  1. Select a ship to create your prompt card about. Platonic relationships are indicated by an "&" between the names (e.g., Haruki & Kazuma). Non-platonic relationships use "/" (e.g., Haruki/Kazuma). Please don't say "Any pairing," either!

  2. Visit this card generator.
    • Here is a visual guide to using it.
    • The large text box is where you can list prompts if you have your own ideas. Please list at least 9 prompts; you can list more if you want. (The generator says you need at least 24, but it's lying.) Single words or short phrases are better than sentences.
    • Otherwise, you can use the dropdown menu found right below it. Note: some of these prompts lists are NSFW. (NSFW prompts are a-ok as long as you tag for it.) If you don't like some of the options that appear in a prompt list, you can delete them.
    • Text prompts only, please. Also, each card square must be unique—don't list the same prompt 9 times.
    • In "Configuration Options," make sure you select 3x3 and (Normal prompt). This is the most important step!
    • Leave the tic-tac-toe card with its default colors, so everyone can read it clearly.
    • Click the "Create a bingo card" button.
    • Scroll down to see the card that was created for you. If you don't like the prompts it picked, you can reroll by clicking "Create a bingo card" again.
    • When you're satisfied, scroll further down the page until you see a textarea box full of HTML.
  3. Copy and paste the HTML from the box and into the body of your prompt comment, then post!

FILLING

Fill prompts by selecting an individual square to create fanwork for, then leaving a responding comment to the prompt with your newly-created work. (Optional:) If you can fill three squares from a prompt in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line, you get a tic-tac-toe (and an additional point bonus)! You can also just fill prompts as you please and get standard points.
  • Prompt squares are labeled as follows:
    A1 B1 C1
    A2 B2 C2
    A3 B3 C3
  • If you're trying for tic-tac-toe, you cannot combine squares into one fill. If your fill can satisfy multiple squares, pick the most relevant square: e.g., one square is sailing and another is pirates and you make a fill about pirates sailing, it's mostly pirates so put down the pirates square.
  • Each fill must stand alone as an individual piece, but all your fills can slot into a larger universe if you'd like.
  • You cannot fill a prompt square more than once, but you can fill every square on a tic tac toe card if you want to.
  • You cannot work with your teammates to get a tic-tac-toe. Only individually achieved tic-tac-toes get the bonus.
  • Multiple people can fill the same prompt square. You cannot "block" others from getting tic-tac-toe.
  • Remember to also follow the general bonus round rules, outlined here.
  • Here is a prompt/fill index for your convenience.

SCORING
These numbers apply to your team as a whole, not each individual teammate. Make as many prompts/fills as you want!

For prompts: 5 points for each tic-tac-toe card (maximum of 50 prompt points per team per round)

For fills:
First 4 fills by any member of your team: 20 points each
Fills 5-10: 15 points each
Fills 11-20: 5 points each
Fills 21-50: 2 points each
Fills 51+: 1 point each
Tic-tac-toe Bonus: 2 points each for the first 12 achieved by your team

All scored content must be created new for this round.

Etc.
If you're hunting through the prompts looking for what to fill, a good trick is to view top-level comments only (see the line of links below this post).

***

there's this little circuit we've
put ourselves on
and the circles I revolve
           around you
pitch us
back and forth:
do we do this, do we
      not?
do we seek hands or do we
     halt?

when I stumble, you don't
            laugh like
I'd thought you
would, but you
linger, so distinct a
            curvature, yearning
for its arc to
              end.

So, I reach
up, I reach
      out, oh
let's sync
together
and be whole
again.

He tells me to believe
so that is what I do: I
believe.

I believe in
the breaths he takes
as he lines up for the shot; I
believe the grimaces, the knife-sharp
sentences, his quickfire
hunger only doused
by the call of us as
victors.

I believe
bone-deep
in all his ministrations.
So, when will he
      truly
believe in me
too?

Calls out hopefully, bingo? HELLO AGAIN HEIDI, OMAM IS JUST TOO POWERFUL. This was meant as a series of little talks between krmy but obviously I veered elsewhere, oops.

***

Take one: the classroom.

Miyuki has never been adept at spinning pens. Sometimes, he watches, out of the corner of his eyes, as Kuramochi slots one between the slope of his thumb and index finger, and he marvels at how tightly it fits, how happily it spins, as if it's truly found a home there.

(He clenches his jaw a bit too hard at that: at the thought of Kuramochi becoming a home for something or someone.)

Naturally, Miyuki inquires: how good are you with fingering since you're such a pro at this?

And naturally, Kuramochi doesn't take what Miyuki would call "a thinly veiled compliment, even" too well; the pen bounces off Miyuki's glasses as Kuramochi yells at him for being an idiot-- which is sort of nice because then he at least can pretend to be Kuramochi's idiot.

At least.

He picks up the pen for him anyway.

(Miyuki doesn't want to admit he's a little jealous of it, he doesn't want to go there at all.)

***

Take two: the vending machine outside their dorm block.

He doesn't know when it officially became their designated meeting point, can't actually pinpoint since when see you later meant popping Pocari tabs at an hour closer to midnight and squinting at what could be seen of the stars while the machine hums serenely beside them.

He just doesn't know.

(He also doesn't want to call all this any sort of romantic but he takes it; he takes it as the one thing he can truly call theirs.)

Close your eyes and you could almost think of this like a date! He says so one night, almost cheerfully, until he really registers what's just rolled out his mouth, pleased as it can be. His crushes his can, accidentally. Or not.

But Kuramochi doesn't say anything, only leans around to slot in a coin, and with a grin and a bump to Miyuki's shoulders, tosses a new Pocari to him.

Miyuki grabs it. He considers never opening it so he could keep it like the tooths he used to hide under his pillow: a memento; a trophy; a testament.

A sign of hope.

He drinks it down anyway.

(He cracks off the tab though, and it stays inside his wallet now.)

***

Take three: the field.

Kuramochi always finds him there. He doesn't ask questions, just stays by his side as Miyuki practices with a bat, trying to get into the swing (ha) of things again.

He never fails to bring a towel or a bottle of water with him, for Miyuki, and it makes Miyuki want to kiss him.

He fights the urge down anyway.

(Miyuki prays one day he'll be brave enough to confess.)

***

Take four: graduation.

When Kuramochi slips his tie into Miyuki's pocket, Miyuki decides he has the grace to raise only one eyebrow.

This is for...? He starts but the other beats him to the pitch: he grabs Miyuki's hand and kisses him by the knuckles.

That's for you, since we don't use first buttons here. Kuramochi explains, nonchalant despite his steadily reddening ears, and Miyuki, with all the intensity of a secretly flustered heart, has to give it to him.

In fact, he pulls Kuramochi by his belt loops, luring him closer until he can breathe the words against the shell of his ear: How charming of you, Cassanova.

He gets a kick to the ankle for that, but they're both laughing anyway.

(And Miyuki's never been anymore happier.)

***

For a school Seidou’s size, there is a frustrating lack of convenient places for two boys to meet alone in the dead of night. Miyuki is fiercely proud of the team’s enthusiasm and dedication, but when it means that even the equipment storage shed will be home to some kind of late-night practice shenanigans, he can’t help but be resentful, just for a moment, that he signed away all rights to a normal teenage life.

And then Kuramochi subtly reveals the contents of his pocket during class, the key to the roof of their dormitory, and Miyuki is glad for the fact that loud, rancorous, borderline stupid Kuramochi still has all the instincts of a yankii.

Miyuki doesn’t bother stopping by his room, and immediately heads up there after his bath, grateful when the doorknob turns in his hand and for the cover of darkness that will shield them from wandering eyes. Not that he thinks anyone will have reason to look up; he doesn’t foresee them making too much noise.

Kuramochi is there, sitting on the concrete with his knees pulled up to his chest. As Miyuki approaches him, he feels the biting breeze of being at one of the tallest points on campus and shivers.

“You idiot,” Kuramochi growls when they’re close enough to make out each other’s details. He gestures to the towel around Miyuki’s neck. “Did you come right here from the baths? Do you want to die?”

Miyuki starts to retort, but cuts himself off as he’s blanketed with warmth; he looks at himself and sees Kuramochi’s team jacket hanging around his body. He should laugh and reject the kindness, but slips his arms into the sleeves instead.

“Now you’ll be the one to freeze,” Miyuki comments, just this side of gleeful.

“I’m not the captain. I’m also not the dumbass who forgot to dry his hair.”

Miyuki decides to confirm this for himself, and brings his fingers up to thread in Kuramochi’s hair. It’s unstyled, and soft without the typical handful of gel. Miyuki’s fingers run through it easily, nails grazing over his scalp. Kuramochi shudders.

“Cold?” Miyuki teases, voice full of laughter.

“No,” Kuramochi murmurs, leaning in so close his breath fans out over Miyuki. “Hot.”

He’s not sure who bridges the gap between them; maybe they meet in the middle where their lips collide with the fervent urgency of two teenagers who are breaking too many rules in one night. Kuramochi folds himself into his jacket, too, arms around Miyuki’s waist and hands on his back, up under his shirt. Miyuki thinks he’s learned well, to take everything he wants while he can.

Just as he thinks that, with his fingers threaded in the fine hair at the base of Kuramochi’s head, the other pulls out of the kiss just enough to bite Miyuki’s lip.

“Stop thinking.”

“You’re a savage,” Miyuki protests, a hand coming to his lip.

“It’s not even bleeding,” Kuramochi answers dismissively. “You have to stop. Stop thinking about how you’re going to break up with me.”

“Does it count as breaking up when we never actually went out?”

“This isn’t funny, Miyuki. What are we doing right now?”

“I thought this was making out.”

“And you make out with tons of people?”

Miyuki shifts backwards ever so slightly, away from Kuramochi and his growing rage. “Admittedly, not as many as I’d like to…”

“Bullshit. Stop playing this fucking game, Miyuki.”

“Are we playing a fucking game? You should have told me, I would have skipped underwear.”

Kuramochi screams internally, and Miyuki is grateful that he’s being conscious of his noise level. He’s also upset, because hurting Kuramochi hurts, but that’s thankfully been buried under layers of repression and self-criticism.

“I don’t get it,” Kuramochi finally huffs, scuffing his sneaker against the floor. “You know I like you. And I’m fairly certain that you like me, too. I know you like to think you’re inscrutable, but I know you better than that, Miyuki.” Miyuki opens his mouth, but before he can get a word out, Kuramochi adds, “And yeah, I said ‘inscrutable,’ you’re not the only one who knows shit.”

“Fair. Listen, I know you think you want this, but—“

“Nope. Denied. Give it to me once and for all, Miyuki, the truth. If you want to make out on the roof, you’ve gotta deal with being my boyfriend. Hand holding and first names and all of it.”

“Sounds gay.”

“Exactly. But if you can’t handle that gay shit, then you walk out, and we’re done. So what’s it gonna be. Do you love me, or not?”

The tryst has become a standoff. Miyuki wants to be angry with Kuramochi for wasting their time, time they could be putting to much better use, but he can only find it in him to be annoyed with himself for letting it get to this point.

Because Kuramochi could do so much better than him. Miyuki knows he saw Kuramochi and Kominato-san each missing the looks the other gave him for the better part of two years. He’s seen the way some underclassmen get sparkles in their eyes when he gives them attention. He knows he himself is obnoxious and impossible.

Right now, he looks and sees Kuramochi, whose eyes reflect a steel that’s evident in his body, too, the way his shoulders are taut and his spine is straight. He looks like he’s ready to fight, but he’s handed Miyuki all of the power —

Miyuki reaches out and laces his fingers with Kuramochi’s. Kuramochi inhales sharply, then all but jumps on Miyuki, and punches him in the shoulder.

“You stupid piece of shit, Kazuya,” he swears vehemently, but the telltale hiccups of his crying make it clear there’s no bite to his bark. Miyuki squeezes his hand and wraps his other arm around Kuramochi’s back. Kuramochi punches his arm, and hard, but Miyuki says nothing because he probably definitely deserved it.

“Did you think I was going to say no?” He wonders, voice coming out smaller than he’d intended.

“You’re selfish enough to.”

Miyuki hums, and kisses Kuramochi’s neck where it’s close to his lips. “I’m sorry, Youichi. I’ll make up for it.”

“You'd better.”

this is so wonderful!! i was so excited when i saw this in my inbox! your characterization is so well done, and the concept and conversation itself really feels to me like something they would do. i especially love that even in a moment they're taking to get some time alone together, kuramochi's picked up on/calls miyuki out on thinking about how he's going to break up with him. like that is so spot on and a scenario i could see happening!

and of course, how you continued it from there was great! miyuki making jokes and dismissing the seriousness of what kuramochi's trying to say while kuramochi tries to get through to him! i love it!! the little bit of angst hurts in just the right way, and the end is really heartwarming to read :)

Right now, he looks and sees Kuramochi, whose eyes reflect a steel that’s evident in his body, too, the way his shoulders are taut and his spine is straight. He looks like he’s ready to fight, but he’s handed Miyuki all of the power — this line was so good and touched on so much of how i feel kuramochi would be/i love the contrast of how you've described kuramochi with the fact that miyuki has the power in the moment with his answer. So Good

thank you so much for this fill!! it was amazing <3

Ahhh, you have no idea how happy this comment made me when I found it this morning! I'm gonna be honest with you, I have never written Miyuki before, and I was kind of scared about doing so because his character is very much the opposite of characters I usually write. He's kind of a brat, and that's what makes him interesting, but for me it was a challenge. Knowing that it worked out nicely has me feeling relieved!

By contrast, Kuramochi came very easily to me, and I was so happy for the chance to write this pairing. Thank you for the sweet comment!!

SCREAMS.

This is my first time ever writing Miyuki in my life and it was a struggle. He's such an asshole, and I don't typically write assholes, so I really had to push what I knew about him and his mannerisms, how he avoids his problems and he tries to push buttons and get people upset, and rolled with that? The fact that you like this enough to rec it is just... SCREAMS.

(I will link you when I post it to AO3... eventually.)
